Hyper-u-amenablity and Hyperfiniteness of Treeable Equivalence Relations

We introduce the notions of u-amenability and hyper-u-amenability for countable Borel equivalence relations, strong forms of amenability that are implied by hyperfiniteness. We show that treeable, hyper-u-amenable countable Borel equivalence relations are hyperfinite. One of the corollaries that we get is that if a countable Borel equivalence relation is measure-hyperfinite and equal to the orbit equivalence relation of a free continuous action of a virtually free group on a $σ$-compact Polish space, then it is hyperfinite. We also obtain that if a countable Borel equivalence relation is treeable and equal to the orbit equivalence relation of a Borel action of an amenable group on a standard Borel space, or if it is treeable, amenable and Borel bounded, then it is hyperfinite.

Elementary amenability and almost finiteness

We show that every free continuous action of a countably infinite elementary amenable group on a finite-dimensional compact metrizable space is almost finite. As a consequence, the crossed products of minimal such actions are $\mathcal{Z}$-stable and classified by their Elliott invariant.

Almost finiteness and groups of dynamical origin

We introduce the property of having good subgroups for actions of countable discrete groups on compact metrizable spaces, and show that it implies comparison when the acting group is amenable. As a consequence, free actions on finite-dimensional spaces of many notable amenable groups of dynamical origin are almost finite. For instance, this applies to topological full groups of Cantor minimal systems and the Basilica group. In particular, minimal such actions give rise to classifiable crossed products.

URP, comparison, mean dimension, and sharp shift embeddability

For a free action $G \curvearrowright X$ of an amenable group on a compact metrizable space, we study the Uniform Rokhlin Property (URP) and the conjunction of Uniform Rokhlin Property and comparison (URPC). We give several equivalent formulations of the latter and show that it passes to extensions. We introduce technical conditions called property FCSB and property FCSB in measure, both of which reduce to the marker property if $G$ is abelian. Our first main result is that for any amenable group $G$ property FCSB in measure is equivalent to URP, and for a large class of amenable groups property FCSB is equivalent to URPC. In the latter case, it follows that if the action is moreover minimal then the C$^*$-crossed product $C(X) \rtimes G$ has stable rank one, satisfies the Toms-Winter conjecture, and is classifiable if $\mathrm{mdim}(G \curvearrowright X) = 0$. Our second main result is that if a system $G \curvearrowright X$ has URPC and $\mathrm{mdim}(G \curvearrowright X) < M/2$, then it is embeddable into the $M$-cubical shift $\left([0, 1]^M\right)^G$. Combined with the first main result, we recover the Gutman-Qiao-Tsukamoto sharp shift embeddability theorem as a special case. Notably, the proof avoids the use of either Euclidean geometry or signal analysis and directly extends the theorem to all abelian groups. Finally, we show that if $G$ is a nonamenable group that contains a free subgroup on two generators and $G \curvearrowright X$ is a topologically amenable action, then it is embeddable into $[0, 1]^G$.

Essential freeness, allostery and $\mathcal{Z}$-stability of crossed products

We explore classifiability of crossed products of actions of countable amenable groups on compact, metrizable spaces. It is completely understood when such crossed products are simple, separable, unital, nuclear and satisfy the UCT: these properties are equivalent to the combination of minimality and topological freeness, and the challenge in this context is establishing $\mathcal{Z}$-stability. While most of the existing results in this direction assume freeness of the action, there exist numerous natural examples of minimal, topologically free (but not free) actions whose crossed products are classifiable. In this work, we take the first steps towards a systematic study of $\mathcal{Z}$-stability for crossed products beyond the free case, extending the available machinery around the small boundary property and almost finiteness to a more general setting. Among others, for actions of groups of polynomial growth with the small boundary property, we show that minimality and topological freeness are not just necessary, but also \emph{sufficient} conditions for classifiability of the crossed product. Our most general results apply to actions that are essentially free, a property weaker than freeness but stronger than topological freeness in the minimal setting. Very recently, M. Joseph produced the first examples of minimal actions of amenable groups which are topologically free and not essentially free. While the current machinery does not give any information for his examples, we develop ad-hoc methods to show that his actions have classifiable crossed products.

Tracially amenable actions and purely infinite crossed products

We introduce the notion of tracial amenability for actions of discrete groups on unital, tracial C$^*$-algebras, as a weakening of amenability where all the relevant approximations are done in the uniform trace norm. We characterize tracial amenability with various equivalent conditions, including topological amenability of the induced action on the trace space. Our main result concerns the structure of crossed products: for groups containing the free group $F_2$, we show that outer, tracially amenable actions on simple, unital, $\mathcal{Z}$-stable C$^*$-algebras always have purely infinite crossed products. Finally, we give concrete examples of tracially amenable actions of free groups on simple, unital AF-algebras.

Group extensions preserve almost finiteness

We show that a free action $G \curvearrowright X$ is almost finite if its restriction to some infinite normal subgroup of $G$ is almost finite. Consider the class of groups which contains all infinite groups of locally subexponential growth and is closed under taking inductive limits and extensions on the right by any amenable group. It follows that all free actions of a group from this class on finite-dimensional spaces are almost finite and therefore that minimal such actions give rise to classifiable crossed products. In particular, that gives a much easier proof for the recent result of Kerr and the author on elementary amenable groups.

Classifiability of crossed products by nonamenable groups

We show that all amenable, minimal actions of a large class of nonamenable countable groups on compact metric spaces have dynamical comparison. This class includes all nonamenable hyperbolic groups, many HNN-extensions, nonamenable Baumslag-Solitar groups, a large class of amalgamated free products, lattices in many Lie groups, $\widetilde{A}_2$-groups, as well as direct products of the above with arbitrary countable groups. As a consequence, crossed products by amenable, minimal and topologically free actions of such groups on compact metric spaces are Kirchberg algebras in the UCT class, and are therefore classified by $K$-theory.

Dynamical comparison and $\mathcal{Z}$-stability for crossed products of simple $C^*$-algebras

We establish $\mathcal{Z}$-stability for crossed products of outer actions of amenable groups on $\mathcal{Z}$-stable $C^*$-algebras under a mild technical assumption which we call McDuff property with respect to invariant traces. We obtain such result using a weak form of dynamical comparison, which we verify in great generality. We complement our results by proving that McDuffness with respect to invariant traces is automatic in many cases of interest. This is the case, for instance, for every action of an amenable group $G$ on a classifiable $C^*$-algebra $A$ whose trace space $T(A)$ is a Bauer simplex with finite dimensional boundary $\partial_e T(A)$, and such that the induced action $G\curvearrowright \partial_eT(A)$ is free. If $G = \mathbb{Z}^d$ and the action $G\curvearrowright \partial_eT(A)$ is free and minimal, then we obtain McDuffness with respect to invariant traces, and thus $\mathcal{Z}$-stability of the corresponding crossed product, also in case $\partial_e T(A)$ has infinite covering dimension.

Polynomial growth, comparison, and the small boundary property

We show that a minimal action of a finitely generated group of polynomial growth on a compact metrizable space has comparison. It follows that if such an action has the small boundary property then it is almost finite and its $C^*$-crossed product is $\mathcal{Z}$-stable, and consequently that such crossed products are classified by their Elliott invariant.
