Dramatic elastic response at the critical end point in UTe$_2$

The first-order transition line in the \textit{H-T} phase diagram of itinerant electron metamagnets terminates at the critical end point-analogous to the critical point on the gas-liquid condensation line in the \textit{p-T} phase diagram. To unravel the impact of critical magnetic fluctuations on the crystal lattice of a metamagnet at the critical end point, we performed an ultrasonic study of the itinerant electron metamagnet UTe$_2$ across varying temperatures and magnetic fields. At temperatures exceeding 9 K, a distinct V-shaped anomaly emerges, precisely centered at the critical field of the metamagnetic transition in the isothermal field dependence of elastic constants. This anomaly arises from lattice instability, triggered by critical magnetic fluctuations via strong magnetoelastic interactions. Remarkably, this effect is maximized precisely at the critical-end-point temperature. Comparative measurements of another itinerant metamagnet, UCoAl, reveal intriguing commonalities. Despite significant differences in the paramagnetic ground state, lattice symmetry, and the expected metamagnetic transition process between UTe$_2$ and UCoAl, both exhibit similar anomalies in elastic properties near the critical end point. These shared aspects may hold universality for other itinerant electron metamagnets.

Longitudinal spin fluctuations driving field-reinforced superconductivity in UTe$_2$

Our measurements of $^{125}$Te NMR relaxations reveal an enhancement of electronic spin fluctuations above $μ_0H^*\sim15$ T, leading to their divergence in the vicinity of the metamagnetic transition at $μ_0H_m\approx35$ T, below which field-reinforced superconductivity appears when a magnetic field ($H$) is applied along the crystallographic $b$ axis. The NMR data evidence that these fluctuations are dominantly longitudinal, providing a key to understanding the peculiar superconducting phase diagram in $H\|b$, where such fluctuations enhance the pairing interactions.

Ferromagnetic Crossover within the Ferromagnetic Order of U$_{7}$Te$_{12}$

We investigate the physical properties of a single crystal of uranium telluride U$_{7}$Te$_{12}$. We have confirmed that U$_{7}$Te$_{12}$ crystallizes in the hexagonal structure with three nonequivalent crystallographic uranium sites. The paramagnetic moments are estimated to be approximately 1 $μ_{\rm B}$ per the uranium site, assuming a uniform moment on all the sites. A ferromagnetic phase transition occurs at $T_{\rm C}=48$ K, where the in-plane magnetization increases sharply, whereas the out-of-plane component does not increase significantly. With decreasing temperature further below $T_{\rm C}$ under field-cooling conditions, the out-of-plane component increases rapidly around $T^{\star}=26$ K. In contrast, the in-plane component hardly changes at $T^{\star}$. Specific heat measurement indicates no $λ$-type anomaly around $T^{\star}$, so this is a cross-over suggesting a reorientation of the ordering moments or successive magnetic ordering on the part of the multiple uranium sites.

First Observation of de Haas-van Alphen Effect and Fermi Surfaces in Unconventional Superconductor UTe2

We report the first observation of the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect in the novel spin-triplet superconductor UTe2 using high quality single crystals with the high residual resistivity ratio (RRR) over 200. The dHvA frequencies, named alpha and beta, are detected for the field directions between c and a-axes. The frequency of branch beta increases rapidly with the field angle tilted from c to a-axis, while branch alpha splits, owing to the maximal and minimal cross-sectional areas from the same Fermi surface. Both dHvA branches, alpha and beta reveal two kinds of cylindrical Fermi surfaces with a strong corrugation at least for branch alpha. The angular dependence of the dHvA frequencies is in very good agreement with that calculated by the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) method taking into account the on-site Coulomb repulsion of U = 2 eV, indicating the main Fermi surfaces are experimentally detected. The detected cyclotron effective masses are large in the range from 32 to 57 m0 . They are approximately 10-20 times lager than the corresponding band masses, consistent with the mass enhancement obtained from the Sommerfeld coefficient and the calculated density of states at the Fermi level. The local density approximation (LDA) calculations of ThTe2 assuming U4+ with the 5f^2 localized model are in less agreement with our experimental results, in spite of the prediction for two cylindrical Fermi surfaces, suggesting a mixed valence states of U4+ and U3+ in UTe2.

Slow Electronic Dynamics in the Paramagnetic State of UTe$_2$

$^{125}$Te NMR experiments in field ($H$) applied along the easy magnetization axis (the $a$-axis) revealed slow electronic dynamics developing in the paramagnetic state of UTe$_2$. The observed slow fluctuations are concerned with a successive growth of long-range electronic correlations below 30$-$40 K, where the spin susceptibility along the hard magnetization axis (the $b$-axis) shows a broad maximum. The experiments also imply that tiny amounts of disorder or defects locally disturb the long-range electronic correlations and develop an inhomogeneous electronic state at low temperatures, leading to a low temperature upturn observed in the bulk-susceptibility in $H\|a$. We suggest that UTe$_2$ would be located on the paramagnetic side near an electronic phase boundary, where either magnetic or Fermi-surface instability would be the origin of the characteristic fluctuations.

Different universality classes of isostructural U$TX$ compounds ($T$ = Rh, Co, Co$_{0.98}$Ru$_{0.02}$; $X$ = Ga, Al)

Magnetization isotherms of the 5f-electron ferromagnets URhGa, UCoGa and UCo0.98Ru0.02Al were measured at temperatures in the vicinity of their Curie temperature in order to investigate the critical behavior near the ferromagnetic phase transition. These compounds adopt the layered hexagonal ZrNiAl-type structure and exhibit huge uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The critical \b{eta}, γ and δ exponents were determined by analyzing Arrott-Noakes plots, Kouvel-Fisher plots, critical isotherms, scaling theory and Widom scaling relations. The values obtained for URhGa and UCoGa can be explained by the results of the renormalization group theory for a 2D Ising system with long-range interactions similar to URhAl reported by other investigators. On the other hand, the critical exponents determined for UCo0.98Ru0.02Al are characteristic of a 3D Ising ferromagnet with short-range interactions suggested in previous studies also for the itinerant 5f-electron paramagnet UCoAl situated near a ferromagnetic transition. The change from the 2D to the 3D Ising system is related to the gradual delocalization of 5f electrons in the series of the URhGa, URhAl, UCoGa to UCo0.98Ru0.02Al and UCoAl compounds and appears close to the strongly itinerant nonmagnetic limit. This indicates possible new phenomena that may be induced by the change of dimensionality in the vicinity of the quantum critical point.

Localization of 5f-electrons and pressure effects on magnetism in U intermetallics in the light of spin-fluctuation theory

UCoGa and URhGa, two isostructural compounds show opposite signs of the initial response of Curie temperature to applied hydrostatic premenssure. To determine the physical origin of this contradiction the magnetization data measured with respect to temperature, magnetic field and hydrostatic pressure were analyzed in the framework of the Takahashi's spin-fluctuation theory. The parameters T0 and TA characterizing the distribution widths of the spin-fluctuation spectrum in the energy and wave vector space, respectively, and TC/T0, the degree of the 5f-electron localization have been determined. Examination of available experimental data for the other UTX (T = a transition metal, X = Al, Ga) ferromagnets having the ZrNiAl-type structure revealed some correlations between the degree of the 5f-electron localization represented by the spin-fluctuation parameters and the response of Curie-temperature on the applied pressure. These observations may be applied more generally to describe the localization and magnetic behaviors of the majority of the uranium ferromagnetic compounds.

Extreme narrow magnetic domain walls in U ferromagnets: The UCoGa case

Surface magnetic domains of a UCoGa single crystal during magnetization/demagnetization processes in increasing/decreasing magnetic fields were investigated by means of magnetic-force-microscopy (MFM) images at low temperatures. The observed domain structure is typical for a ferromagnet with strong uniaxial anisotropy. The evolution of magnetic domains during cooling of the crystal below TC has also been manifested by MFM images. Analysis of the available data reveals that the high uniaxial magnetocrystalline energy in combination with the relatively small ferromagnetic exchange interaction in UCoGa gives rise to the formation of very narrow domain walls formed by the pairs of the nearest U neighbor ions with antiparallel magnetic moments within the basal plane. Since the very high anisotropy energy is a common feature of the majority of the uniaxial U ferromagnets, analogous domain-wall properties are expected for all these materials.

Effect of thermal history on magnetism in UCoGa

Single crystals of UCoGa have been grown in different conditions and subsequently annealed in order to provide a collection of samples representing various quality as to concentration of lattice defects. The different sample quality "grades" have been characterized by values of residual electrical resistivity. Correlations of magnetic parameters (coercive field, Curie temperature) with residual resistivity have been determined and domain-wall pinning by crystal defects has been confirmed as the underlying mechanism of coercive field in strongly anisotropic ferromagnets.

Pressure Evolution of Magnetism in URhGa

In this paper, we report the results of an ambient and high pressure study of a 5f-electron ferromagnet URhGa. The work is focused on measurements of magnetic and thermodynamic properties of a single crystal sample and on the construction of the p-T phase diagram. Diamond anvil cells were employed to measure the magnetization and electrical resistivity pressures up to ~ 9 GPa. At ambient pressure, URhGa exhibits collinear ferromagnetic ordering of uranium magnetic moments μU ~ 1.1 μB (at 2 K) aligned along the c-axis of the hexagonal crystal structure below the Curie temperature TC = 41K. With the application of pressure up to 5GPa the ordering temperature TC initially increases whereas the saturated moment slightly decreases. The rather unexpected evolution is put in the context of the UTX family of compounds.

Antiferromagnetism and phase transitions in non-centrosymmetric UIrSi$_3$

Magnetization and specific heat measurements on a UIrSi3 single crystal reveal Ising-like antiferromagnetism below T$_N$ = 41.7 K with easy magnetization direction along the c-axis of tetragonal structure. The antiferromagentic ordering is suppressed by magnetic fields > H$_c$ (μ$_0$H$_c$ = 7.3 T at 2 K) applied along the c-axis. The first-order metamagnetic transition at H$_c$ exhibits asymmetric hysteresis reflecting a slow reentry of the complex ground-state antiferromagnetic structure with decreasing field. The hysteresis narrows with increasing temperature and vanishes at 28 K. A second-order metamagnetic transition is observed at higher temperatures. The point of change of the order of transition in the established H-T magnetic phase diagram is considered as the tricritical point (at T$_{tc}$ = 28 K and μ$_0$H$_{tc}$ = 5.8 T). The modified-Curie-Weiss-law fits of temperature dependence of the a- and c-axis susceptibility provide opposite signs of Weiss temperatures, Θ$_p^a$ ~ -51 K and Θ$_p^c$ ~ +38 K, respectively. This result and the small value of μ$_0$H$_c$ contrasting to the high T$_N$ indicate competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions responsible for the complex antiferromagnetic ground state. The simultaneous electronic-structure calculations focused on the total energy of ferromagentic and various antiferromagnetic states, the U magnetic moment and magnetocrystalline anisotropy provide results consistent with experimental findings and the suggested physical picture of the system.

Electrical resistivity across the tricriticality in itinerant ferromagnet

We investigate the discontinuous ferromagnetic phase diagram near tricritical point in UCo 1-x Ru x Al compounds by electrical resistivity measurements. Separation of phases in UCo 0.995 Ru 0.005 Al at ambient pressure and in UCo 0.990 Ru 0.010 Al at pressure of 0.2 GPa and disappearance of ferromagnetism at 0.4 GPa is confirmed. The exponent of temperature dependence of electrical resistivity implies change from Fermi liquid behavior to non-Fermi liquid at 0.2 GPa and reaches minimum at 0.4 GPa. Our results are compared to results obtained on the pure UCoAl and explanation for different exponents is given.

Quantum ferromagnet in the proximity of the tricritical point

Echoes of quantum phase transitions (QPTs) at finite temperatures are theoretically and experimentally challenging and unexplored topics. Particularly in metallic quantum ferromagnets the experimental investigations are hampered by an intricate preparation of sufficiently pure samples and the access to the proper coordinates in parameter space. The present study shows that it is possible to tune a specific system at easily accessible conditions to the vicinity of its quantum phase transition. The physics is demonstrated on Ru-doped UCoAl, driven by pressure or substitution to and across the tricritical point and follows the first-order transition line to the theoretically presumed QPT. These findings open the possibilities for further in-depth studies of classical and quantum critical phenomena at easily reachable conditions.

Pressure-induced quantum phase transition in the itinerant ferromagnet UCoGa

In this paper, we report the results of a high pressure study of the itinerant 5f-electron ferromagnet UCoGa. The work is focused on probing the expected ferromagnet-to-paramagnet quantum phase transition induced by high pressure and on the general features of the P-T(-H) phase diagram. Diamond anvil cells were employed to measure the magnetization and electrical resistivity under pressures up to ~ 10 GPa.At ambient pressure, UCoGa exhibits collinear ferromagnetic ordering of uranium magnetic moments μU ~ 0.74 μB (at 2 K) aligned along the c-axis of the hexagonal crystal structure below Curie temperature TC = 48K. With the application of pressure, gradual decrease of both, TC and the saturated magnetic moment, has been observed up to pressures ~ 6 GPa. This is followed by a sharp drop of magnetic moment and a sudden disappearance of the magnetic order at the pressure of 6.5 GPa, suggesting a first-order phase transition, as expected for a clean system. The low temperature power law dependence of the electrical resistivity shows distinct anomalies around the ~ 6 GPa, consistent with the pressure evolution of the magnetic moment and the ordering temperature. The tricritical point of the UCoGa phase diagram is located at approximately ~ 30 K and ~ 6 GPa.

Properties and Collapse of the Ferromagnetism in UCo1-xRuxAl Studied in Single Crystals

We have investigated the ferromagnetic (FM) phase which suddenly develops in UCo1-xRuxAl and is isolated by paramagnetic regions on both sides from the parent UCoAl and URuAl. For that purpose we have grown high quality single crystals with x = 0.62, 0.70, 0.74, 0.75 and 0.78. The properties of the FM phase have been investigated by microscopic and macroscopic methods. Polarized neutron diffraction on a single crystal with x = 0.62 revealed the gradual growth of the hybridization between U and T-site in the U - T plane with increasing x. Hybridization works here as a mediator of the strong indirect interaction, while the delocalized character of the 5 f states is still conserved. As a result very weak spontaneous magnetic moments are observed for all alloys with magnitude nearly in proportion to the TC for x < 0.62, while an enormous disproportion exists between them near xcrit.. The magnetization, specific heat, electrical resistivity, and Hall effect measurements confirmed that the FM transition is suppressed continuously at the critical concentration xcrit. = 0.77. Two quantum critical points are then expected on both sides of the FM dome. We propose a scenario that the order of the FM/PM transition differs at opposite boundaries of the FM dome. We conclude that both criticalities are influenced by disorder. Criticality on the UCoAl side has the character of a clean FM metal, while on the Ru rich side it has the character of a magnetically inhomogeneous system involving a Griffiths phase.
