Effective Coupling for Open Billiards

We derive an explicit expression for the coupling constants of individual eigenstates of a closed billiard which is opened by attaching a waveguide. The Wigner time delay and the resonance positions resulting from the coupling constants are compared to an exact numerical calculation. Deviations can be attributed to evanescent modes in the waveguide and to the finite number of eigenstates taken into account. The influence of the shape of the billiard and of the boundary conditions at the mouth of the waveguide are also discussed. Finally we show that the mean value of the dimensionless coupling constants tends to the critical value when the eigenstates of the billiard follow random-matrix theory.

Wave Function Shredding by Sparse Quantum Barriers

We discuss a model in which a quantum particle passes through $δ$ potentials arranged in an increasingly sparse way. For infinitely many barriers we derive conditions, expressed in terms ergodic properties of wave function phases, which ensure that the point and absolutely continuous parts are absent leaving a purely singularly continuous spectrum. For a finite number of barriers, the transmission coefficient shows extreme sensitivity to the particle momentum with fluctuation in many different scales. We discuss a potential application of this behavior for erasing the information carried by the wave function.

Quantum scattering in the strip: from ballistic to localized regimes

Quantum scattering is studied in a system consisting of randomly distributed point scatterers in the strip. The model is continuous yet exactly solvable. Varying the number of scatterers (the sample length) we investigate a transition between the ballistic and the localized regimes. By considering the cylinder geometry and introducing the magnetic flux we are able to study time reversal symmetry breaking in the system. Both macroscopic (conductance) and microscopic (eigenphases distribution, statistics of S-matrix elements) characteristics of the system are examined.

Random matrix approach to `nonuniversal' conductance

Recent experiments on the conductance of high quality quantum wires have revealed an unexpected feature: the quantization step of the conductance is apparently system dependent. We provide the understanding of this behaviour using the appropriately extended random matrix approach. A single additional parameter governs the size of the conductance quantization steps. In effect the behaviour seems to remain `universal', generic for the conductance of a class of mesoscopic systems.

Probability current tornado loops in three-dimensional scattering

We consider scattering of a three-dimensional particle on a finite family of delta potentials. For some parameter values the scattering wavenctions exhibit nodal lines in the form of closed loops, which may touch but do not entangle. The corresponding probability current forms vortical singularities around these lines; if the scattered particle is charged, this gives rise to magnetic flux loops. The conclusions extend to scattering on hard obstacles or smooth potentials.

Statistical properties of random scattering matrices

We discuss the properties of eigenphases of S--matrices in random models simulating classically chaotic scattering. The energy dependence of the eigenphases is investigated and the corresponding velocity and curvature distributions are obtained both theoretically and numerically. A simple formula describing the velocity distribution (and hence the distribution of the Wigner time delay) is derived, which is capable to explain the algebraic tail of the time delay distribution observed recently in microwave experiments. A dependence of the eigenphases on other external parameters is also discussed. We show that in the semiclassical limit (large number of channels) the curvature distribution of $S$--matrix eigenphases is the same as that corresponding to the curvature distribution of the underlying Hamiltonian and is given by the generalized Cauchy distribution.
