Pseudomodes for Schroedinger operators with complex potentials

For one-dimensional Schroedinger operators with complex-valued potentials, we construct pseudomodes corresponding to large pseudoeigenvalues. Our (non-semi-classical) approach results in substantial progress in achieving optimal conditions and conclusions as well as in covering a wide class of previously inaccessible potentials, including discontinuous ones.

The damped wave equation with unbounded damping

We analyze new phenomena arising in linear damped wave equations on unbounded domains when the damping is allowed to become unbounded at infinity. We prove the generation of a contraction semigroup, study the relation between the spectra of the semigroup generator and the associated quadratic operator function, the convergence of non-real eigenvalues in the asymptotic regime of diverging damping on a subdomain, and we investigate the appearance of essential spectrum on the negative real axis. We further show that the presence of the latter prevents exponential estimates for the semigroup and turns out to be a robust effect that cannot be easily canceled by adding a positive potential. These analytic results are illustrated by examples.

Eigenvalues of one-dimensional non-self-adjoint Dirac operators and applications

We analyze eigenvalues emerging from thresholds of the essential spectrum of one-dimensional Dirac operators perturbed by complex and non-symmetric potentials. In the general non-self-adjoint setting we establish the existence and asymptotics of weakly coupled eigenvalues and Lieb-Thirring inequalities. As physical applications we investigate the damped wave equation and armchair graphene nanoribbons.

Spectral analysis of non-self-adjoint Jacobi operator associated with Jacobian elliptic functions

We perform the spectral analysis of a family of Jacobi operators $J(α)$ depending on a complex parameter $α$. If $|α|\neq1$ the spectrum of $J(α)$ is discrete and formulas for eigenvalues and eigenvectors are established in terms of elliptic integrals and Jacobian elliptic functions. If $|α|=1$, $α\neq \pm 1$, the essential spectrum of $J(α)$ covers the entire complex plane. In addition, a formula for the Weyl $m$-function as well as the asymptotic expansions of solutions of the difference equation corresponding to $J(α)$ are obtained. Finally, the completeness of eigenvectors and Rodriguez-like formulas for orthogonal polynomials, studied previously by Carlitz, are proved.

Reduction of dimension as a consequence of norm-resolvent convergence and applications

This paper is devoted to dimensional reductions via the norm resolvent convergence. We derive explicit bounds on the resolvent difference as well as spectral asymptotics. The efficiency of our abstract tool is demonstrated by its application on seemingly different PDE problems from various areas of mathematical physics; all are analysed in a unified manner now, known results are recovered and new ones established.

Local form-subordination condition and Riesz basisness of root systems

We exploit the so called form-local subordination in the analysis of non-symmetric perturbations of unbounded self-adjoint operators with isolated simple positive eigenvalues. If the proper condition relating the size of gaps between the unperturbed eigenvalues and the strength of perturbation, measured by the form-local subordination, is satisfied, the root system of the perturbed operator contains a Riesz basis and usual asymptotic formulas for perturbed eigenvalues and eigenvectors hold. The power of the abstract perturbation results is demonstrated particularly on Schrödinger operators with possibly unbounded or singular complex potential perturbations.

Non-accretive Schrödinger operators and exponential decay of their eigenfunctions

We consider non-self-adjoint electromagnetic Schrödinger operators on arbitrary open sets with complex scalar potentials whose real part is not necessarily bounded from below. Under a suitable sufficient condition on the electromagnetic potential, we introduce a Dirichlet realisation as a closed densely defined operator with non-empty resolvent set and show that the eigenfunctions corresponding to discrete eigenvalues satisfy an Agmon-type exponential decay.

Spectra of definite type in waveguide models

We develop an abstract method to identify spectral points of definite type in the spectrum of the operator $T_1\otimes I_2 + I_1\otimes T_2$. The method is applicable in particular for non-self-adjoint waveguide type operators with symmetries. Using the remarkable properties of the spectral points of definite type, we obtain new results on realness of weakly coupled bound states and of low lying essential spectrum in the $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric waveguide. Moreover, we show that the pseudospectrum has a normal tame behavior near the low lying essential spectrum and exclude the accumulation of non-real eigenvalues to this part of the essential spectrum. The advantage of our approach is particularly visible when the resolvent of the unperturbed operator cannot be explicitly expressed and most of the mentioned spectral conclusions are extremely hard to prove using direct methods.

On extremal properties of Jacobian elliptic functions with complex modulus

A thorough analysis of values of the function $m\mapsto\mbox{sn}(K(m)u\mid m)$ for complex parameter $m$ and $u\in (0,1)$ is given. First, it is proved that the absolute value of this function never exceeds 1 if $m$ does not belong to the region in $\mathbb{C}$ determined by inequalities $|z-1|<1$ and $|z|>1$. The global maximum of the function under investigation is shown to be always located in this region. More precisely, it is proved that, if $u\leq1/2$, then the global maxim is located at $m=1$ with the value equal to $1$. While if $u>1/2$, then the global maximum is located in the interval $(1,2)$ and its value exceeds $1$. In addition, more subtle extremal properties are studied numerically. Finally, applications in a Laplace-type integral and spectral analysis of some complex Jacobi matrices are presented.

Approximations of spectra of Schrödinger operators with complex potentials on $\mathbb{R}^d$

We study spectral approximations of Schrödinger operators $T=-Δ+Q$ with complex potentials on $Ω=\mathbb{R}^d$, or exterior domains $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, by domain truncation. Our weak assumptions cover wide classes of potentials $Q$ for which $T$ has discrete spectrum, of approximating domains $Ω_n$, and of boundary conditions on $\partial Ω_n$ such as mixed Dirichlet/Robin type. In particular, ${\rm Re} \, Q$ need not be bounded from below and $Q$ may be singular. We prove generalized norm resolvent convergence and spectral exactness, i.e. approximation of all eigenvalues of $T$ by those of the truncated operators $T_n$ without spectral pollution. Moreover, we estimate the eigenvalue convergence rate and prove convergence of pseudospectra. Numerical computations for several examples, such as complex harmonic and cubic oscillators for $d=1,2,3$, illustrate our results.

Analysis of the essential spectrum of singular matrix differential operators

A complete analysis of the essential spectrum of matrix-differential operators $\mathcal A$ of the form \begin{align} \begin{pmatrix} -\displaystyle{\frac{\rm d}{\rm d t}} p \displaystyle{\frac{\rm d}{\rm d t}} + q & -\displaystyle{\frac{\rm d}{\rm d t}} b^* \! + c^* \\[2mm] \hspace{6mm} b \displaystyle{\frac{\rm d}{\rm d t}} + c & \hspace{4mm} D \end{pmatrix} \quad \text{in } \ L^2((α, β)) \oplus \bigl(L^2((α, β))\bigr)^n \label{mo} \end{align} singular at $β\in\mathbb R\cup\{\infty\}$ is given; the coefficient functions $p$, $q$ are scalar real-valued with $p>0$, $b$, $c$ are vector-valued, and $D$ is Hermitian matrix-valued. The so-called "singular part of the essential spectrum" $σ_{\rm ess}^{\rm \,s}(\mathcal A)$ is investigated systematically. Our main results include an explicit description of $σ_{\rm ess}^{\rm \,s}(\mathcal A)$, criteria for its absence and presence; an analysis of its topological structure and of the essential spectral radius. Our key tools are: the asymptotics of the leading coefficient $π(\cdot,λ)=p-b^*(D-λ)^{-1}b$ of the first Schur complement of $\mathcal A$, a scalar differential operator but non-linear in $λ$; the Nevanlinna behaviour in $λ$ of certain limits $t\!\nearrow\!β$ of functions formed out of the coefficients in $\mathcal A$. The efficacy of our results is demonstrated by several applications; in particular, we prove a conjecture on the essential spectrum of some symmetric stellar equilibrium models.

Root system of singular perturbations of the harmonic oscillator type operators

We analyze perturbations of the harmonic oscillator type operators in a Hilbert space H, i.e. of the self-adjoint operator with simple positive eigenvalues $μ_k$ satisfying $μ_{k+1}-μ_k \geq Δ>0$. Perturbations are considered in the sense of quadratic forms. Under a local subordination assumption, the eigenvalues of the perturbed operator become eventually simple and the root system forms a Riesz basis.

Bifurcation of nonlinear eigenvalues in problems with antilinear symmetry

Many physical systems can be described by nonlinear eigenvalues and bifurcation problems with a linear part that is non-selfadjoint e.g. due to the presence of loss and gain. The balance of these effects is reflected in an antilinear symmetry, like e.g. the PT-symmetry, of the problem. Under this condition we show that the nonlinear eigenvalues bifurcating from real linear eigenvalues remain real and the corresponding nonlinear eigenfunctions remain symmetric. The abstract results are applied in a number of physical models of Bose-Einstein condensation, nonlinear optics and superconductivity, and further numerical analysis is performed.

Hydrogen atom in space with a compactified extra dimension and potential defined by Gauss' law

We investigate the consequences of one extra spatial dimension for the stability and energy spectrum of the non-relativistic hydrogen atom with a potential defined by Gauss' law, i.e. proportional to $1/|x|^2$. The additional spatial dimension is considered to be either infinite or curled-up in a circle of radius $R$. In both cases, the energy spectrum is bounded from below for charges smaller than the same critical value and unbounded from below otherwise. As a consequence of compactification, negative energy eigenstates appear: if $R$ is smaller than a quarter of the Bohr radius, the corresponding Hamiltonian possesses an infinite number of bound states with minimal energy extending at least to the ground state of the hydrogen atom.

Remarks on the convergence of pseudospectra

We establish the convergence of pseudospectra in Hausdorff distance for closed operators acting in different Hilbert spaces and converging in the generalised norm resolvent sense. As an assumption, we exclude the case that the limiting operator has constant resolvent norm on an open set. We extend the class of operators for which it is known that the latter cannot happen by showing that if the resolvent norm is constant on an open set, then this constant is the global minimum. We present a number of examples exhibiting various resolvent norm behaviours and illustrating the applicability of this characterisation compared to known results.

Non-self-adjoint graphs

On finite metric graphs we consider Laplace operators, subject to various classes of non-self-adjoint boundary conditions imposed at graph vertices. We investigate spectral properties, existence of a Riesz basis of projectors and similarity transforms to self-adjoint Laplacians. Among other things, we describe a simple way how to relate the similarity transforms between Laplacians on certain graphs with elementary similarity transforms between matrices defining the boundary conditions.

On the metric operator for the imaginary cubic oscillator

We show that the eigenvectors of the PT-symmetric imaginary cubic oscillator are complete, but do not form a Riesz basis. This results in the existence of a bounded metric operator having intrinsic singularity reflected in the inevitable unboundedness of the inverse. Moreover, the existence of non-trivial pseudospectrum is observed. In other words, there is no quantum-mechanical Hamiltonian associated with it via bounded and boundedly invertible similarity transformations. These results open new directions in physical interpretation of PT-symmetric models with intrinsically singular metric, since their properties are essentially different with respect to self-adjoint Hamiltonians, for instance, due to spectral instabilities.
