Geometry-Informed Optimization of Binary RIS Configurations for Communication and Sensing

Practical Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) often support only a small number of phase states, making their configuration inherently discrete. For a 1-bit RIS with $N$ elements, direct optimization requires searching among $2^N$ binary configurations. This work shows that this exponential configuration space is not unstructured. By reformulating 1-bit RIS optimization as the maximization of the norm of a signed sum of channel-dependent vectors, we prove that every globally optimal configuration must be induced by the signs of their projections onto a common direction. This geometric characterization restricts the class of configurations that can contain global optima and leads to different algorithmic consequences depending on the signal-space dimension. For general Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems, we develop a geometry-informed sampling method that evaluates only structurally admissible configurations. For Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) systems, the same principle reduces to a two-dimensional angular partition, allowing the complete candidate set to be characterized and the global optimum to be recovered through polynomial-time enumeration, by evaluating at most $N+1$ out of the $2^N$ configurations. Finally, we apply the same binary optimization principle to an Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) scenario, where communication enhancement and target localization reduce to the same underlying geometric problem. The proposed framework therefore provides a unified approach for exploiting the structure of practical 1-bit RIS configurations across communication and sensing functionalities.

Unconventional magnetism mediated by spin-phonon-photon coupling

Magnetic order typically emerges due to the short-range exchange interaction between the constituent electronic spins. Recent discoveries have found a crucial role for spin-phonon coupling in various phenomena from optical ultrafast magnetization switching to dynamical control of the magnetic state. Here, we demonstrate theoretically the emergence of a biquadratic long-range interaction between spins mediated by their coupling to phonons hybridized with vacuum photons into polaritons. The resulting ordered state enabled by the exchange of virtual polaritons between spins is reminiscent of superconductivity mediated by the exchange of virtual phonons. The biquadratic nature of the spin-spin interaction promotes ordering without favoring ferro- or antiferromagnetism. It further makes the phase transition to magnetic order a first-order transition, unlike in conventional magnets. Consequently, a large magnetization develops abruptly on lowering the temperature which \aknew{could} enable magnetic memories admitting ultralow-power thermally-assisted writing while maintaining a high data stability. The role of photons in the phenomenon further enables an in-situ static control over the magnetism. These unique features make our predicted spin-spin interaction and magnetism highly unconventional paving the way for novel scientific and technological opportunities.

High-efficiency triple-resonant inelastic light scattering in planar optomagnonic cavities

Optomagnonic cavities have recently been emerging as promising candidates for implementing coherent microwave-to-optical conversion, quantum memories and devices, and next generation quantum networks. A key challenge in the design of such cavities is the attainment of high efficiencies, which could, e.g., be exploited for efficient optical interfacing of superconducting qubits, as well as the practicality of the final designs, which ideally should be planar and amenable to on-chip integration. Here, on the basis of a novel time Floquet scattering-matrix approach, we report on the design and optimization of a planar, multilayer optomagnonic cavity, incorporating a Ce:YIG thin film, magnetized in-plane, operating in the triple-resonant inelastic light scattering regime. This architecture allows for conversion efficiencies of about 5%, under realistic conditions, which is orders of magnitude higher than alternative designs. Our results suggest a viable way forward for realizing practical information inter-conversion between microwave photons and optical photons, mediated by magnons, with efficiencies intrinsically greater than those achieved in optomechanics and alternative related technologies, as well as a platform for fundamental studies of classical and quantum dynamics in magnetic solids, and implementation of futuristic quantum devices.
