A novel framework for spectral density reconstruction via quadrature-based Laplace inversion

In this work, we explore a numerical approach for performing the inverse Laplace transformation, with an emphasis on achieving stability and robustness under noisy conditions. Our quadrature-based method integrates reparameterization, data smoothing, and optimization techniques to regularizing ill-conditioned systems. Together, these elements enable consistency checks that enhance the reliability of the inversion process. Through a series of controlled tests on toy models, we demonstrate the stability and effectiveness of the method in the presence of noise. Using mock data, we approximate spectral densities from Euclidean correlators, generating smoothed and stable results that accurately reproduce the correlator behavior, particularly at large Euclidean times. We conclude by discussing prospects for applications to actual lattice QCD data.

On analytic continuation from imaginary to real chemical potential in Lattice QCD

Imaginary baryon number chemical potential simulations are a popular workaround for the (in)famous sign problem plaguing finite density QCD studies on the lattice. One is necessarily left with the problem of analytically continuing results to real values of $\mu_B$. In the framework of the Bielefeld Parma Collaboration, we have in recent years studied a multi-point Pad\'e description of the net baryon number density computed as a function of imaginary baryon number chemical potential. While our main emphasis has till now been on the determination of Lee-Yang singularities, the method is per se a natural tool to analytically continue results. We report on the status of our projects with this respect, comparing the Pad\'e approach to analytic continuation to another, new strategy, which is an application of the Cauchy integral formula in the sense of an inverse problem.

Searching for the QCD critical endpoint using multi-point Pad\'e approximations

Using the multi-point Pad\'e approach, we locate Lee-Yang edge singularities of the QCD pressure in the complex baryon chemical potential plane. These singularities are extracted from singularities in the net baryon-number density calculated in $N_f=2+1$ lattice QCD at physical quark mass and purely imaginary chemical potential. Taking an appropriate scaling ansatz in the vicinity of the conjectured QCD critical endpoint, we extrapolate the singularities on $N_\tau=6$ lattices to pure real baryon chemical potential to estimate the position of the critical endpoint (CEP). We find $T^{\rm CEP}=105^{+8}_{-18}$~ MeV and $\mu_B^{\rm CEP} = 422^{+80}_{-35}$~ MeV, which compares well with recent estimates in the literature. For the slope of the transition line at the critical point we find $-0.16(24)$.

Universal scaling and the asymptotic behaviour of Fourier coefficients of the baryon-number density in QCD

We discuss the scaling of the Yang-Lee singularity (YLs) and show how the universal scaling can be used to locate phase transitions in QCD. We describe two complementary methods to extract the location of the Yang-Lee singularity from lattice QCD data of the baryon-number density and higher order cumulants of the baryon number, obtained at imaginary chemical potential. The first method (multi-point Pad\'e resummation) is used to determine the Roberge-Weiss phase transition temperature. Our continuum extrapolated result is $T_{RW}=211.1\pm3.1$ MeV. The second method is based on the asymptotic behaviour of the Fourier coefficients of the baryon-number density. We discuss the derivation of a fitting function and demonstrate that the procedure can successfully locate the YLs in the Quark Meson model.

Phase Transitions in Particle Physics -- Results and Perspectives from Lattice Quantum Chromo-Dynamics

Phase transitions in a non-perturbative regime can be studied by ab initio Lattice Field Theory methods. The status and future research directions for LFT investigations of Quantum Chromo-Dynamics under extreme conditions are reviewed, including properties of hadrons and of the hypothesized QCD axion as inferred from QCD topology in different phases. We discuss phase transitions in strong interactions in an extended parameter space, and the possibility of model building for Dark Matter and Electro-Weak Symmetry Breaking. Methodological challenges are addressed as well, including new developments in Artificial Intelligence geared towards the identification of different phases and transitions.

Probing the energy-smeared R-ratio on the lattice

We present a first-principles lattice QCD investigation of the $R$-ratio between the $e^+e^-$ cross-section into hadrons and that into muons. By using the method of Ref.[1], that allows to extract smeared spectral densities from Euclidean correlators, we compute the $R$-ratio convoluted with Gaussian smearing kernels of widths of about $600$ MeV and central energies from $220$ MeV up to $2.5$ GeV. Our theoretical results are compared with the corresponding quantities obtained by smearing the KNT19 compilation [2] of $R$-ratio experimental measurements with the same kernels and, by centring the Gaussians in the region around the $ρ$-resonance peak, a tension of about three standard deviations is observed. From the phenomenological perspective, we have not included yet in our calculation QED and strong isospin-breaking corrections and this might affect the observed tension. From the methodological perspective, our calculation demonstrates that it is possible to study the $R$-ratio in Gaussian energy bins on the lattice at the level of accuracy required in order to perform precision tests of the Standard Model.

Determination of Lee-Yang edge singularities in QCD by rational approximations

We report updated results on the determination of Lee-Yang edge (LYE) singularities in $N_f = 2+1$ QCD using highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ) with physical masses on $N_\tau = 4, 6, 8$ lattices. The singularity structure of QCD in the complex $\mu_B$ plane is probed using conserved charges calculated at imaginary $\mu_B$. The location of the singularities is determined by studying the (uncancelled) poles of multi-point Pad\'e approximants. We show that close to the Roberge-Weiss (RW) transition, the location of the LYE singularities scales according to the $3$-$d$ $Z(2)$ universality class. By combining the new $N_\tau = 6$ data with the $N_\tau = 4$ data from our previous analysis we extract a rough estimate for the RW temperature in the continuum limit. We also discuss some preliminary results for the singularities close to the chiral phase transition obtained from simulations on $N_\tau = 6, 8$ lattices.

Lattice calculation of the R-ratio smeared with Gaussian kernel

The ratio $R(E)$ of the cross-sections for $e^+e^-\to$ hadrons and $e^+e^-\to μ^+μ^-$ is a valuable energy-dependent probe of the hadronic sector of the Standard Model. Moreover, the experimental measurements of $R(E)$ are the inputs of the dispersive calculations of the leading hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon $g-2$ and these are in significant tension with direct lattice calculations and with the muon $g-2$ experiment. In this talk we discuss the results of our first-principles lattice study of $R(E)$. By using a recently proposed method for extracting smeared spectral densities from Euclidean lattice correlators, we have calculated $R(E)$ convoluted with Gaussian kernels of different widths $σ$ and central energies up to $2.5$ GeV. Our theoretical results have been compared with the KNT19 [1] compilation of experimental results smeared with the same Gaussian kernels and a tension (about three standard deviations) has been observed for $σ\sim 600$ MeV and central energies around the $ρ$-resonance peak.

Short \& intermediate distance HVP contributions to muon g-2: SM (lattice) prediction versus $e^+e^-$ annihilation data

We present new lattice results of the ETM Collaboration, obtained from extensive simulations of lattice QCD with dynamical up, down, strange and charm quarks at physical mass values, different volumes and lattice spacings, concerning the SM prediction for the so-called intermediate window (W) and short-distance (SD) contributions to the leading order hadronic vacuum polarization (LO-HVP) term of the muon anomalous magnetic moment, $a_μ$. Results for $a_μ^{\rm LO-HVP,W}$ and $a_μ^{\rm LO-HVP,SD}$, besides representing a step forward to a complete lattice computation of $a_μ^{\rm LO-HVP}$ and a useful benchmark among lattice groups, are compared here with their dispersive counterparts based on experimental data for $e^+e^-$ into hadrons. The comparison confirms the tension in $a_μ^{\rm LO-HVP,W}$, already noted in 2020 by the BMW Collaboration, while showing no tension in $a_μ^{\rm LO-HVP,SD}$.

Disconnected contribution to the LO HVP term of muon g-2 from ETMC

We present a lattice determination of the disconnected contributions to the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) to the muon anomalous magnetic moment in the so-called short and intermediate time-distance windows. We employ gauge ensembles produced by the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC) with $N_f = 2 + 1 + 1$ flavours of Wilson twisted-mass clover-improved quarks with masses approximately tuned to their physical value. We take the continuum limit employing three lattice spacings at about 0.08, 0.07 and 0.06 fm.

Nucleon transverse quark spin densities

We present a calculation of the Mellin moments of the nucleon transverse quark spin densities extracted from the unpolarized and transversity generalized form factors. We use three $N_F=2+1+1$ ensembles of twisted mass fermions with quark masses tuned to their physical values and lattice spacings $a\sim 0.08$~fm, $a\sim 0.07$~fm and $a\sim 0.06$~fm and extrapolate the form factors to the continuum limit. Besides isovector densities we also include results for the tensor charge for each quark flavor using the ensemble with $a\sim 0.08$~fm for which we include the disconnected contributions.

Detecting critical points from Lee-Yang edge singularities in lattice QCD

A new approach is presented to explore the singularity structure of lattice QCD in the complex chemical potential plane. Our method can be seen as a combination of the Taylor expansion and analytic continuation approaches. Its novelty lies in using rational (Padé) approximants for studying Lee-Yang edge singularities. We present a calculation of the cumulants of the net-baryon number as a function of a purely imaginary baryon number chemical potential, obtained with highly improved staggered quarks at temporal lattice extent of $N_τ=4,6$. We construct various rational function approximations of the lattice data and determine their poles (and roots) in the complex plane. We compare the position of the closest pole to the theoretically expected position of the Lee-Yang edge singularity. At high temperature, we find scaling that is in accordance with the expected power law behavior of the Roberge-Weiss transition while a different behavior is found for $T\lesssim 170$ MeV.

Twisted mass gauge ensembles at physical values of the light, strange and charm quark masses

Lattice QCD simulations directly at physical masses of dynamical light, strange and charm quarks are highly desirable especially to remove systematic errors due to chiral extrapolations. However such simulations are still challenging. We discuss the adaption of efficient algorithms, like multi-grid methods or higher order integrators, within the molecular dynamic steps of the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm, that are enabling simulations of a new set of gauge ensembles by the Extended Twisted Mass collaboration (ETMC). We present the status of the on-going ETMC simulation effort that aims to enabling studies of finite size and discretization effects. We work within the twisted mass discretization which is free of odd-discretization effects at maximal twist and present our tuning procedure.

Gradient flow scale-setting with $N_f=2+1+1$ Wilson-clover twisted-mass fermions

We present a determination of the gradient flow scales $w_0$, $\sqrt{t_0}$ and $t_0/w_0$ in isosymmetric QCD, making use of the gauge ensembles produced by the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC) with $N_f=2+1+1$ flavours of Wilson-clover twisted-mass quarks including configurations close to the physical point for all dynamical flavours. The simulations are carried out at three values of the lattice spacing and the scale is set through the PDG value of the pion decay constant, yielding $w_0=0.17383(63)$ fm, $\sqrt{t_0}=0.14436(61)$ fm and $t_0/w_0=0.11969(62)$ fm. Finally, fixing the kaon mass to its isosymmetric value, we determine the ratio of the kaon and pion leptonic decay constants to be $f_K/f_π=1.1995(44)$.

Renormalization constants of quark bilinear operators in QCD with dynamical up, down, strange and charm quarks

We present preliminary results of a calculation of the QCD renormalization constants (RCs) for quark bilinear operators, evaluated non-perturbatively on the lattice in the RI'-MOM scheme. The calculation is performed by using dedicated ensembles with $N_f=4$ degenerate dynamical twisted mass (clover) fermions and the Iwasaki gauge action. A detailed analysis is reported, with emphasis on the control or subtraction of the hadronic contaminations occurring in the lattice estimators of RCs and a check of proper scaling with $a^2$ of the final results. Such a careful study of systematic errors is the counterpart of the high statistical precision reached by current calculations of RCs in the RI'-MOM scheme and is important in order to quote accurate results in phenomenological applications, such as the computation of quark masses.

Lee-Yang edge singularities in 2+1 flavor QCD with imaginary chemical potential

We present results of the location of the closest singularities in the complex chemical potential plane using a novel method. These results are obtained with (2+1)-flavor of highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ) on lattices with temporal extent of Nt=4,6. We show that the scaling is consistent with the expected scaling of the Lee-Yang edge singularities in the vicinity of the Roberge-Weiss (RW) transition. We determine various non-universal parameters using 3D Ising model scaling functions that map QCD in the scaling region of the RW transition. Furthermore, as a preliminary result we discuss how the Lee-Yang edge singularity can be used to probe the chiral phase transition in QCD. The singularity obtained close to the chiral phase transition temperature Tc seems to be in agreement with the expected scaling of the Lee-Yang edge singularity. As an outlook, we discuss the scaling of the Lee-Yang edge singularity in the vicinity of a possible critical end point in QCD, at even lower temperatures. In the future, such a scaling analysis might hint on the existence and the location of the critical end point. The work presented here is a part of an ongoing project of Bielefeld Parma joint collaboration.

Lee-Yang edge singularities in lattice QCD : A systematic study of singularities in the complex $μ_B$ plane using rational approximations

A new approach is presented to explore the singularity structure of lattice QCD at imaginary chemical potential. Our method can be seen as a combination of the Taylor expansion and analytic continuation approaches. Its novelty lies in using rational (Padé) approximants for studying Lee Yang edge singularities. The motivation for using rational approximants will be exhibited. We will provide some confidence in our approach based on numerical experiments performed on well-motivated "toy models". Our focus lies in identifying singularities of the net-baryon number density in the complex $μ_B$ plane. To this end we have found signatures of the Roberge-Weiss critical point(and Chiral singularities -- subject to some caveats). In this contribution we will discuss the setup, simulation parameters and results obtained for 2+1 flavor QCD in the complex $μ_B/T$ plane.
