Search for triple and quadruple beta decay of $^{150}$Nd

Triple beta decay of $^{150}$Nd to the ground and excited states of $^{150}$Eu and quadruple beta decay of $^{150}$Nd to the excited states of $^{150}$Gd have been studied using a 400 cm$^3$ low-background HPGe detector and an external source consisting of 3046 g of natural Nd$_2$O$_3$ powder. A half-life limit for the quadruple beta decay to the 0$_1^+$ state of $^{150}$Gd was found to be $T_{1/2} (0\nu+4\nu) > 8.7\times10^{20}$ yr (90\% C.L.). For other (0$\nu$+4$\nu$) transitions to the 2$_1^+$, 3$_1^-$, 4$^+_1$, 2$_2^+$ and 2$^+_3$ excited states limits for the first time have been obtained at the level of $(6.1-9.5)\times10^{20}$ yr (90\% C.L.). We report here also the results for the first search for triple beta decay to the ground and excited final states of $^{150}$Eu. We find no evidence of this decay and set lower limits on the half-life in the range $T_{1/2} (0\nu+3\nu) > (0.04-4.8)\times10^{20}$ yr (90\% C.L.).

Radioactivity measurements of green tea leaves from Japan after the Fukushima incident

A series of 32 green tea leaves samples from different Asian producers were analyzed by direct {\gamma}-ray spectrometry at the PRISNA facility in Bordeaux. All the samples contain about 500 Bq/kg of 40K and 10 Bq/kg of 210Pb. As expected, most of the recent Japanese samples contain also the 137Cs and 134Cs radio-isotopes, whose activity distributions are studied as a function of the geographical origin in order to get an insight on the outspread and fallout of radionuclides stemming from the 2011 Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant incident.

Measurement of the Double Beta Decay Half-life of 130Te with the NEMO-3 Detector

This Letter reports results from the NEMO-3 experiment based on an exposure of 1275 days with 661g of 130Te in the form of enriched and natural tellurium foils. The double beta decay rate of 130Te is found to be greater than zero with a significance of 7.7 standard deviations and the half-life is measured to be T1/2 = (7.0 +/- 0.9(stat) +/- 1.1(syst)) x 10^{20} yr. This represents the most precise measurement of this half-life yet published and the first real-time observation of this decay.

Probing New Physics Models of Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay with SuperNEMO

The possibility to probe new physics scenarios of light Majorana neutrino exchange and right-handed currents at the planned next generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiment SuperNEMO is discussed. Its ability to study different isotopes and track the outgoing electrons provides the means to discriminate different underlying mechanisms for the neutrinoless double beta decay by measuring the decay half-life and the electron angular and energy distributions.

Spectral modeling of scintillator for the NEMO-3 and SuperNEMO detectors

We have constructed a GEANT4-based detailed software model of photon transport in plastic scintillator blocks and have used it to study the NEMO-3 and SuperNEMO calorimeters employed in experiments designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay. We compare our simulations to measurements using conversion electrons from a calibration source of $\rm ^{207}Bi$ and show that the agreement is improved if wavelength-dependent properties of the calorimeter are taken into account. In this article, we briefly describe our modeling approach and results of our studies.

Search for $β^+$EC and ECEC processes in $^{112}$Sn

Limits on $β^+$EC (here EC denotes electron capture) and ECEC processes in $^{112}$Sn have been obtained using a 380 cm$^3$ HPGe detector and an external source consisting of 53.355 g enriched tin (94.32% of $^{112}$Sn). A limit with 90% C.L. on the $^{112}$Sn half-life of $4.7\times 10^{20}$ y for the ECEC(0$ν$) transition to the $0^+_3$ excited state in $^{112}$Cd (1871.0 keV) has been established. This transition is discussed in the context of a possible enhancement of the decay rate by several orders of magnitude given that the ECEC$(0ν)$ process is nearly degenerate with an excited state in the daughter nuclide. Prospects for investigating such a process in future experiments are discussed. The limits on other $β^+$EC and ECEC processes in $^{112}$Sn were obtained on the level of $(0.6-8.7)\times 10^{20}$ y at the 90% C.L.

Measurement of the two neutrino double beta decay half-life of Zr-96 with the NEMO-3 detector

Using 9.4 g of Zr-96 and 1221 days of data from the NEMO-3 detector corresponding to 0.031 kg yr, the obtained 2vbb decay half-life measurement is [2.35 +/- 0.14(stat) +/- 0.16(syst)] x 10^19 yr. Different characteristics of the final state electrons have been studied, such as the energy sum, individual electron energy, and angular distribution. The 2v nuclear matrix element is extracted using the measured 2vbb half-life and is 0.049 +/- 0.002. Constraints on 0vbb decay have also been set.

Investigation of $ββ$ decay in $^{150}$Nd and $^{148}$Nd to the excited states of daughter nuclei

Double beta decay of $^{150}$Nd and $^{148}$Nd to the excited states of daughter nuclei have been studied using a 400 cm$^3$ low-background HPGe detector and an external source consisting of 3046 g of natural Nd$_2$O$_3$ powder. The half-life for the two-neutrino double beta decay of $^{150}$Nd to the excited 0$^+_1$ state in $^{150}$Sm is measured to be $T_{1/2}=[1.33^{+0.36}_{-0.23}(stat)^{+0.27}_{-0.13}(syst)]\cdot 10^{20}$ y. For other $(0ν+ 2ν)$ transitions to the 2$^+_1$, 2$^+_2$, 2$^+_3$, and 0$^+_2$ levels in $^{150}$Sm, limits are obtained at the level of $\sim (2-8)\cdot 10^{20}$ y. In the case of $^{148}$Nd only limits for the $(0ν+ 2ν)$ transitions to the 2$^+_1$, 0$^+_1$, and 2$^+_2$ excited states in $^{148}$Sm were obtained and are at the level of \sim (4-8)\cdot 10^{20}$ y.

Measurement of the background in the NEMO 3 double beta decay experiment

In the double beta decay experiment NEMO~3 a precise knowledge of the background in the signal region is of outstanding importance. This article presents the methods used in NEMO~3 to evaluate the backgrounds resulting from most if not all possible origins. It also illustrates the power of the combined tracking-calorimetry technique used in the experiment.

Search for $β^+$EC and ECEC processes in $^{112}$Sn and $β^-β^-$ decay of $^{124}$Sn to the excited states of $^{124}$Te

Limits on $β^+$EC and ECEC processes in $^{112}$Sn and on $β^-β^-$ decay of $^{124}$Sn to the excited states of $^{124}$Te have been obtained using a 380 cm$^3$ HPGe detector and an external source consisting of natural tin. A limit with 90% C.L. on the $^{112}$Sn half-life of $0.92\times 10^{20}$ y for the ECEC(0$ν$) transition to the $0^+_3$ excited state in $^{112}$Cd (1871.0 keV) has been established. This transition is discussed in the context of a possible enhancement of the decay rate by several orders of magnitude given that the ECEC$(0ν)$ process is nearly degenerate with an excited state in the daughter nuclide. Prospects for investigating such a process in future experiments are discussed. The $β^-β^-$ decay limits for $^{124}$Sn to the excited states of $^{124}$Te were obtained on the level of $(0.8-1.2)\times 10^{21}$ y at the 90% C.L.

Search for $β^+$EC and ECEC processes in $^{74}$Se

For the first time, limits on double-beta processes in $^{74}$Se have been obtained using a 400 cm$^3$ HPGe detector and an external source consisting of natural selenium powder. At a confidence level of 90%, they are $1.9\times 10^{18}$ y for the $β^+$EC$(0ν+ 2ν)$ transition to the ground state, $7.7\times 10^{18}$ y for the ECEC($2ν$) transition to the $2^+_1$ excited state in $^{74}$Ge (595.8 keV), $1.1\times 10^{19}$ y for the ECEC($0ν$) transition to the $2^+_1$ excited state in $^{74}$Ge (595.8 keV) and $5.5\times 10^{18}$ y for the ECEC($2ν$) and ECEC($0ν$) transitions to the $2^+_2$ excited state in $^{74}$Ge (1204.2 keV). The last transition is discussed in association with a possible enhancement of the decay rate, in this case by several orders of magnitude, because the ECEC$(0ν)$ process is nearly degenerate with an excited state in the daughter nuclide. Prospects for investigating such processes in future experiments are discussed.

Measurement of double beta decay of 100Mo to excited states in the NEMO 3 experiment

The double beta decay of 100Mo to the 0^+_1 and 2^+_1 excited states of 100Ru is studied using the NEMO 3 data. After the analysis of 8024 h of data the half-life for the two-neutrino double beta decay of 100Mo to the excited 0^+_1 state is measured to be T^(2nu)_1/2 = [5.7^{+1.3}_{-0.9}(stat)+/-0.8(syst)]x 10^20 y. The signal-to-background ratio is equal to 3. Information about energy and angular distributions of emitted electrons is also obtained. No evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay to the excited 0^+_1 state has been found. The corresponding half-life limit is T^(0nu)_1/2(0^+ --> 0^+_1) > 8.9 x 10^22 y (at 90% C.L.). The search for the double beta decay to the 2^+_1 excited state has allowed the determination of limits on the half-life for the two neutrino mode T^(2nu)_1/2(0^+ --> 2^+_1) > 1.1 x 10^21 y (at 90% C.L.) and for the neutrinoless mode T^(0nu)_1/2(0^+ --> 2^+_1) > 1.6 x 10^23 y (at 90% C.L.).

Possible background reductions in double beta decay experiments

The background induced by radioactive impurities of $^{208}\rm Tl$ and $^{214}\rm Bi$ in the source of the double beta experiment NEMO-3 has been investigated. New methods of data analysis which decrease the background from the above mentioned contamination are identified. The techniques can also be applied to other double beta decay experiments capable of measuring independently the energies of the two electrons.
