Comparison of MHD and gyrokinetic simulations of linear instabilities at the q = 1 surface

Accurate modeling of core instabilities in tokamak plasmas is essential to understand the underlying physical mechanisms and their impact on plasma confinement. The ideal stability of the internal kink mode and the m = 1 collisionless tearing mode are analyzed numerically both with gyrokinetic and MHD codes. We compare the different models implemented in the codes and show that the gyrokinetic equations without collisions inherently contain the ideal MHD limit. The simulation results show that the stability of the internal kink mode strongly depends on the choice of several setup parameters like the inclusion of parallel magnetic field fluctuations, the tokamak aspect ratio, the drift- or gyrokinetic treatment of the ions and the electron mass. Furthermore, we demonstrate the stabilization of the instabilities by diamagnetic effects. Our results indicate that gyrokinetic and MHD models can be reconciled in the description of the internal kink mode by careful consideration of the simulation setup and model assumptions, but instabilities like the collisionless tearing mode require a more advanced treatment beyond MHD.

Characteristics of the Alfvénic activity during the current quench in ASDEX Upgrade

ASDEX Upgrade has developed multiple massive gas injection (MGI) scenarios to investigate runaway electron (RE) dynamics. During the current quench of the MGI induced disruptions, Alfvénic activity is observed in the 300-800 kHz range. With the help of a mode tracing algorithm based on Fourier spectrograms, mode behaviour was classified for 180 discharges. The modes have been identified as global Alfvén eigenmodes using linear gyrokinetic MHD simulations. Changes in the Alfvén continuum during the quench are proposed as explanation for the strong frequency sweep observed. A systematic statistical analysis shows no significant connection of the mode characteristics to the dynamics of the subsequent runaway electron beams. In our studies, the appearance and amplitude of the modes does not seem to affect the potential subsequent runaway beam. Beyond the scope of the 180 investigated dedicated RE experiments, the Alfvénic activity is also observed in natural disruptions with no RE beam forming.

EP-Stability-WF: an IMAS-integrated workflow for energetic particle stability

The confinement of energetic particles (EPs) generated by fusion reactions and external heating methods is crucial for the performance of future fusion devices. However, EP transport can occur due to their interaction with electromagnetic perturbations, affecting heating efficiency and overall performance. Robust reduced models are needed to analyze stability and transport, but their development requires effort. This paper presents an automated IMAS-based workflow for analyzing the time-dependent stability of EP-driven modes, focusing on the linear properties of Toroidal Alfven Eigenmodes (TAEs) in general Tokamak geometry. The workflow utilizes efficient computational methods and reduced models to deliver fast and reproducible results. A demonstration of the workflow's effectiveness was performed, identifying key linear properties of TAEs in various projected ITER scenarios. This approach represents a critical step towards developing tools for analyzing EP transport and optimizing the performance of future fusion reactors.

Multi-scale analysis of global electromagnetic instabilities in ITER Pre-Fusion-Power Operation plasmas

Global electromagnetic gyrokinetic simulations are performed with the Particle-in-Cell code ORB5 for an ITER Pre-Fusion-Power-Operation (PFPO) plasma scenario, with half-field (2.65 T) and half-current (7.5 MA). We report on a 'multi-scale' analysis of the discharge, considering eigenmodes and instabilies across three scale-lengths. Although the scenario will nominally have neutral beam heating with particles injected with 1 MeV, Alfvén eigenmodes are investigated in the absence of such source, and Reversed Shear (RSAE), Toroidal (TAE) and Elliptical (EAE) Alfvén eigenmodes are found with weak damping for moderately low toroidal mode numbers ($10 \leq n \leq 35$). At higher toroidal mode numbers ($40 \leq n \leq 70$), unstable Alfvénic modes have been observed close to rational surfaces and are labelled as Beta-induced Alfvén eigenmodes (BAE)/Alfvénic Ion Temperature Gradient (AITG) modes, since their frequency is associated with the BAE gap and they are driven by the bulk plasma on the Alfvénic continuum. These modes are unstable in the absence of energetic particles, and adding a species of energetic particles (with an isotropic 1 MeV slowing down distribution) has negligible impact on their growth rate. At higher toroidal mode numbers ($150 \lessapprox n < 220$), low frequency microscale instabilities are observed.

Gyrokinetic investigation of the nonlinear interaction of Alfv\'en instabilities and energetic-particle driven geodesic acoustic modes

This paper presents a study of the interaction between Alfv\'en modes and zonal structures, considering a realistic ASDEX Upgrade equilibrium. The results of gyrokinetic simulations with the global, electromagnetic, particle-in-cell code ORB5 are presented, where the modes are driven unstable by energetic particles with a bump-on-tail equilibrium distribution function, with radial density gradient. Two regimes have been observed: at low energetic particles concentration, the Alfv\'en mode saturates at much higher level in presence of zonal structures; on the other hand at high energetic particles concentration the difference is less pronounced. The former regime is characterized by the zonal structure (identified as an energetic particle driven geodesic acoustic mode), being more unstable than the Alfv\'en mode. In the latter regime the Alfv\'en mode is more unstable than the zonal structure. The theoretical explanation is given in terms of a 3-wave coupling of the energetic particle driven geodesic acoustic mode and Alfv\'en mode, mediated by the curvature-pressure coupling term of the energetic particles.

The development of an implicit full f method for electromagnetic particle simulations of Alfvén waves and energetic particle physics

In this work, an implicit scheme for particle-in-cell/Fourier electromagnetic simulations is developed and applied to studies of Alfvén waves in one dimension and three-dimensional tokamak plasmas. An analytical treatment is introduced to achieve efficient convergence of the iterative solution of the implicit field-particle system. First, its application to the one-dimensional uniform plasma demonstrates its applicability in a broad range of $β/m_e$ values. Second, toroidicity induced Alfvén eigenmodes (TAE) are simulated in a three-dimensional axisymmetric tokamak plasma, using the widely studied case defined by the International Tokamak Physics Activity (ITPA) Energetic Particle (EP) Topical Group. The real frequency and the growth (or damping) rate of the TAE with (or without) EPs agree with previous results reasonably well. The full f electromagnetic particle scheme established in this work provides a possible natural choice for EP transport studies where large profile variation and arbitrary particle distribution functions need to be treated in kinetic simulations.

Global linear and nonlinear gyrokinetic modelling of Alfvén eigenmodes in ITER

Linear and nonlinear modelling of Alfvénic instabilities, most notably toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs), obtained by using the global nonlinear electromagnetic gyrokinetic model of the code ORB5 are presented for the 15 MA scenario of the ITER tokamak. Linear simulations show that elliptic Alfvén eigenmodes and odd-parity TAEs are only weakly damped but not excited by alpha particles, whose drive favours even-parity TAEs. Low mode number TAEs are found to be global, requiring global treatment. Nonlinearly, even with double the nominal EP density, single mode simulations lead to saturation with negligible EP transport however multi-mode simulations predict that with double the nominal EP density, enhanced saturation and significant EP redistribution will occur.

Development and testing of an unstructured mesh method for whole plasma gyrokinetic simulations in realistic tokamak geometry

In this work, we have formulated and implemented a mixed unstructured mesh-based finite element (FE)-Fourier decomposition scheme for gyrokinetic simulations in realistic tokamak geometry. An efficient particle positioning (particle-triangle mapping) scheme for the charge deposition and field scattering using an intermediate grid as the search index for triangles has been implemented and a significant speed-up by a factor of $\sim30$ is observed as compared with the brute force scheme for a medium-size simulation. The TRIMEG (TRIangular MEsh based Gyrokinetic) code has been developed. As an application, the ion temperature gradient (ITG) mode is simulated using the simplified gyrokinetic Vlasov-Poisson model. Our simulation and that using the ORB5 code for the DIII-D Cyclone case show reasonable agreement. As an additional application, ITG simulations using an ASDEX Upgrade equilibrium have been performed with density and temperature gradient profiles similar to the Cyclone case. Capabilities of the TRIMEG code for simulations with realistic experimental equilibria in the plasma core and in the whole plasma volume with open field lines are demonstrated.

Nonlinear dynamics of energetic-particle driven geodesic acoustic modes in ASDEX Upgrade

Turbulence in tokamaks generates radially sheared zonal flows. Their oscillatory counterparts, geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs), appear due to the action of the magnetic field curvature. The GAMs can be driven unstable by an anisotropic energetic particle (EP) population leading to the formation of global radial structures, called EGAMs. The EGAMs can redistribute EP energy to the bulk plasma through collisionless wave-particle interaction. In such a way, the EGAMs might contribute to the plasma heating. Thus, investigation of EGAM properties, especially in the velocity space, is necessary for precise understanding of the transport phenomena in tokamak plasmas. In this work, the nonlinear dynamics of EGAMs without considering the mode interaction with the turbulence is investigated with the help of a Mode-Particle-Resonance (MPR) diagnostic implemented in the global gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code ORB5. An ASDEX Upgrade discharge is chosen as a reference case for this investigation due to its rich EP nonlinear dynamics. An experimentally relevant magnetic field configuration, thermal species profiles and an EP density profile are taken for EGAM chirping modelling and its comparison with available empirical data. The same magnetic configuration is used to explore energy transfer by the mode from the energetic particles to the thermal plasma including kinetic electron effects. For a given EGAM level the plasma heating by the mode can be significantly enhanced by varying the EP parameters. Electron dynamics decreases the EGAM saturation amplitude and consequently reduces the plasma heating, even though the mode transfers its energy to thermal ions much more than to electrons.

Gyrokinetic investigation of the damping channels of Alfvén modes in ASDEX Upgrade

The linear destabilization and nonlinear saturation of energetic-particle driven Alfvénic instabilities in tokamaks strongly depend on the damping channels. In this work, the collisionless damping mechanisms of Alfvénic modes are investigated within a gyrokinetic framework, by means of global simulations with the particle-in-cell code ORB5, and compared with the eigenvalue code LIGKA and reduced models. In particular, the continuum damping and the Landau damping (of ions and electrons) are considered. The electron Landau damping is found to be dominant on the ion Landau damping for experimentally relevant cases. As an application, the linear and nonlinear dynamics of toroidicity induced Alfvén eigenmodes and energetic-particle driven modes in ASDEX Upgrade is investigated theoretically and compared with experimental measurements.

Nonlinear interplay of Alfven instabilities and energetic particles in tokamaks

The confinement of energetic particles (EP) is crucial for an efficient heating of tokamak plasmas. Plasma instabilities such as Alfven Eigenmodes (AE) can redistribute the EP population making the plasma heating less effective, and leading to additional loads on the walls. The nonlinear dynamics of toroidicity induced AE (TAE) is investigated by means of the global gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code ORB5, within the NEMORB project. The nonperturbative nonlinear interplay of TAEs and EP due to the wave-particle nonlinearity is studied. In particular, we focus on the nonlinear modification of the frequency, growth rate and radial structure of the TAE, depending on the evolution of the EP distribution in phase space. For the ITPA benchmark case, we find that the frequency increases when the growth rate decreases, and the mode shrinks radially. This nonlinear evolution is found to be correctly reproduced by means of a quasilinear model, namely a model where the linear effects of the nonlinearly modified EP distribution function are retained.

Experimental investigation of the radial structure of energetic particle driven modes

Alfvén eigenmodes (AEs) and energetic particle modes (EPMs) are often excited by energetic particles (EPs) in tokamak plasmas. One of the main open questions concerning EP driven instabilities is the non-linear evolution of the mode structure. The aim of the present paper is to investigate the properties of beta-induced AEs (BAEs) and EP driven geodesic acoustic modes (EGAMs) observed in the ramp-up phase of off-axis NBI heated ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) discharges. This paper focuses on the changes in the mode structure of BAEs/EGAMs during the non-linear chirping phase. Our investigation has shown that in case of the observed down-chirping BAEs the changes in the radial structure are smaller than the uncertainty of our measurement. This behaviour is most probably the consequence of that BAEs are normal modes, thus their radial structure strongly depends on the background plasma parameters rather than on the EP distribution. In the case of rapidly upward chirping EGAMs the analysis consistently shows shrinkage of the mode structure. The proposed explanation is that the resonance in the velocity space moves towards more passing particles which have narrower orbit widths.

Linear gyrokinetic particle-in-cell simulations of Alfven instabilities in tokamaks

The linear dynamics of Alfven modes in tokamaks is investigated here by means of the global gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code NEMORB. The model equations are shown and the local shear Alfven wave dispersion relation is derived, recovering the continuous spectrum in the incompressible ideal MHD limit. A verification and benchmark analysis is performed for continuum modes in a cylinder and for toroidicity-induced Alfven Eigenmodes. Modes in a reversed-shear equilibrium are also investigated, and the dependence of the spatial structure in the poloidal plane on the equilibrium parameters is described. In particular, a phase-shift in the poloidal angle is found to be present for modes whose frequency touches the continuum, whereas a radial symmetry is found to be characteristic of modes in the continuum gap.
