Coarse graining scale and effectiveness of hydrodynamic modeling

Some basic questions about the hydrodynamical approach to relativistic heavy ion collisions are discussed aiming to clarify how far we can go with such an approach to extract useful information on the properties and dynamics of the QCD matter created. We emphasize the importance of the coarse-graining scale required for the hydrodynamic modeling which determines the space-time resolution and the associated limitations of collective flow observables. We show that certain kinds of observables can indicate the degree of inhomogeneity of the initial condition under less stringent condition than the local thermal equilibrium subjected to the coarse-graining scale compatible to the scenario.

Elliptic flow in high multiplicity proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt s$ = 14 TeV as a signature of deconfinement and quantum energy density fluctuations

At LHC extreme values of energy density will be reached even for proton-proton collisions. Such values of energy density may be large enough to generate a collective motion in the products of the collision, therefore generating effects such as elliptic flow. Using ideal 3+1D hydrodynamical simulations, we show that elliptic flow can occur at least for top multiplicities p-p events at LHC and that the intensity of such effect is strongly related to quantum fluctuations in the initial proton energy distribution.

Effect of bulk viscosity on Elliptic Flow near QCD phase transition

Effects of the bulk viscosity on the elliptic flow are studied. To introduce a realistic equation of state and transport coefficients, we apply the results of the lattice QCD and hadron resonance gas calculations for these quantities. We found that the bulk viscosity acts in a non trivial manner on the elliptic flow $v_{2}$. The reduction of $v_{2}$ is more effective at low $p_{T}$ compared to the case of shear viscosity, whereas at high $p_{T}$, the situation is reversed, leading to $v_{2}$ enhancement. We argue that this is caused by the competition of the critical behaviors of the equation of state and the transport coefficients. We further found that Grad's method with the 14 moments approximation is not applicable to estimate the viscous effects for the one-particle distribution function at the freeze out.

Bulk viscosity effects on elliptic flow

The effects of bulk viscosity on the elliptic flow $v_{2}$ are studied using realistic equation of state and realistic transport coefficients. We find that thebulk viscosity acts in a non trivial manner on $v_{2}$. At low $p_{T}$, the reduction of $v_{2}$ is even more effective compared to the case of shear viscosity, whereas at high $p_{T}$, an enhancement of $v_{2}$ compared to the ideal case is observed. We argue that this is caused by the competition of the critical behavior of the equation of state and the transport coefficients.

Extensivity of Irreversible Current and Stability in Causal Dissipative Hydrodynamics

We extended our formulation of causal dissipative hydrodynamics [T. Koide \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. \textbf{C75}, 034909 (2007)] to be applicable to the ultra-relativistic regime by considering the extensiveness of irreversible currents. The new equation has a non-linear term which suppresses the effect of viscosity. We found that such a term is necessary to guarantee the positive definiteness of the inertia term and stabilize numerical calculations in ultra-relativistic initial conditions. Because of the suppression of the viscosity, the behavior of the fluid is more close to that of the ideal fluid. Our result is essentially same as that from the extended irreversible thermodynamics, but is different from the Israel-Stewart theory. A possible origin of the difference is discussed.

Stability and Causality in relativistic dissipative hydrodynamics

The stability and causality of the Landau-Lifshitz theory and the Israel-Stewart type causal dissipative hydrodynamics are discussed. We show that the problem of acausality and instability are correlated in relativistic dissipative hydrodynamics and instability is induced by acausality. We further discuss the stability of the scaling solution. The scaling solution of the causal dissipative hydrodynamics can be unstable against inhomogeneous perturbations.

Shock propagation and stability in causal dissipative hydrodynamics

We studied the shock propagation and its stability with the causal dissipative hydrodynamics in 1+1 dimensional systems. We show that the presence of the usual viscosity is not enough to stabilize the solution. This problem is solved by introducing an additional viscosity which is related to the coarse-graining scale of the theory.

Relativistic Dissipative Hydrodynamics: A Minimal Causal Theory

We present a new formalism for the theory of relativistic dissipative hydrodynamics. Here, we look for the minimal structure of such a theory which satisfies the covariance and causality by introducing the memory effect in irreversible currents. Our theory has a much simpler structure and thus has several advantages for practical purposes compared to the Israel-Stewart theory (IS). It can readily be applied to the full three-dimensional hydrodynamical calculations. We apply our formalism to the Bjorken model and the results are shown to be analogous to the IS.
