Evens norm, transfers and characteristic classes for extraspecial p-groups

Let P be the extraspecial p-group of order p^{2n+1}, of p-rank n+1, and of exponent p if p>2. Let Z be the center of P and let kappa_{n,r} be the characteristic classes of degree 2^n - 2^r (resp. 2(p^n-p^r)) for p=2 (resp. p>2), 0 <= r <= n-1, of a degree p^n faithful irreducible representation of P. It is known that, modulo nilradical, the iotath powers of the kappa_{n,r}'s belong to T=Im(inf: H^*(P/Z,F_p)/sqrt{0} --> H^*(P,F_p)/sqrt{0}), with iota= 1 if p=2, iota= p if p>2. We obtain formulae in H^*(P,F_p)/sqrt{0} relating the kappa_{n,r}^iota terms to the ones of fewer variables. For p>2 and for a given sequence r_0,...,r_{n-1} of non-negative integers, we also prove that, modulo-nilradical, the element prod_{r_i}kappa^{r_i}_{n,i} belongs to T if and only if either r_0 >= 2, or all the r_i are multiple of p. This gives the determination of the subring of invariants of the symplectic group Sp_{2n}(F_p) in T.

Transfer and Chern classes for extraspecial p-groups

In the cohomology ring of an extraspecial p-group, the subring generated by Chern classes and transfers is studied. This subring is strictly larger than the Chern subring, but still not the whole cohomology ring, even modulo nilradical. A formula is obtained relating Chern classes to transfers.

Linking first occurrence polynomials over F_p by Steenrod operations

This paper provides analogues of the results of [G.Walker and R.M.W. Wood, Linking first occurrence polynomials over F_2 by Steenrod operations, J. Algebra 246 (2001), 739--760] for odd primes p. It is proved that for certain irreducible representations L(lambda) of the full matrix semigroup M_n(F_p), the first occurrence of L(lambda) as a composition factor in the polynomial algebra P=F_p[x_1,...,x_n] is linked by a Steenrod operation to the first occurrence of L(lambda) as a submodule in P. This operation is given explicitly as the image of an admissible monomial in the Steenrod algebra A_p under the canonical anti-automorphism chi . The first occurrences of both kinds are also linked to higher degree occurrences of L(lambda) by elements of the Milnor basis of A_p.

Almost all extraspecial p-groups are Swan groups

Let P be an extraspecial p-group which is neither dihedral of order 8, nor of odd order p^3 and exponent p. Let G be a finite group having P as a Sylow p-subgroup. Then the mod-p cohomology ring of G coincides with that of the normalizer N_G(P).
