Existence and Design of Functional Observers for Time-Delay Systems with Delayed Output Measurements

This paper investigates the problem of functional state estimation for linear time-delay systems in which the delay affecting the state evolution differs from the delay affecting the output measurements. While existing observer designs typically assume instantaneous output availability, practical systems often exhibit measurement delays that are distinct from and not aligned with the intrinsic state delay. We explicitly distinguish between the state delay $τ$ and the measurement delay $h$ and address the problem of estimating a desired functional $z(t)=Fx(t)$ under such mismatched delay conditions. Three functional observer structures are proposed to accommodate different delay configurations, each capable of realizing functional observers of different orders. This flexibility is important since a functional observer whose order equals the number of estimated functionals may not always exist. For each structure, algebraic existence conditions are established together with constructive synthesis procedures. A functional augmentation framework is developed to derive verifiable rank-based conditions for observers of various orders. In addition, the notion of generalized functionals, defined over an augmented delayed state vector, is introduced to provide greater flexibility in satisfying observer existence conditions and facilitating systematic design. Numerical examples illustrate the proposed theory.

Observer-Based Control of Linear Systems with Mismatched Input and Output Delays

This paper investigates the stabilization of linear systems subject to simultaneous, mismatched time delays in both the control input and system output vectors. The proposed control framework is developed in two primary stages. First, an asymptotically stabilizing delayed state-feedback controller is synthesized by leveraging recent advancements in Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) techniques. Second, this controller is realized using novel time-delay compensators \cite{trinhnam26}. This architecture successfully accommodates an output measurement delay $τ_y$ that is independent of the input delay $τ_u$, enabling direct estimation of the delayed state-feedback control law. The proposed methodology is then extended to target output controllers to account for simultaneous, mismatched time delays in both the control input and system output vectors.

A note on spontaneous symmetry breaking in the mean-field Bose gas

We consider the homogeneous Bose gas in the three-dimensional unit torus, where $N$ particles interact via a two-body potential of the form $N^{-1} v(x)$. The system is studied at inverse temperatures of order $N^{-2/3}$, which corresponds to the temperature scale of the Bose--Einstein condensation phase transition. We show that spontaneous $U(1)$ symmetry breaking occurs if and only if the system exhibits Bose--Einstein condensation in the sense that the one-particle density matrix of the Gibbs state has a macroscopic eigenvalue.

State bounding for positive coupled differential - difference equations with bounded disturbances

In this paper, the problem of finding state bounds is considered, for the first time, for a class of positive time-delay coupled differential-difference equations (CDDEs) with bounded disturbances. First, we present a novel method, which is based on nonnegative matrices and optimization techniques, for computing a like-exponential componentwise upper bound of the state vector of the CDDEs without disturbances. The main idea is to establish bounds of the state vector on finite-time intervals and then, by using the solution comparison method and the linearity of the system, extend to infinite time horizon. Next, by using state transformations, we extend the obtained results to a class of CDDEs with bounded disturbances. As a result, componentwise upper bounds, ultimate bounds and invariant set of the perturbed system are obtained. The feasibility of obtained results are illustrated through a numerical example.

Ice formation in the Arctic during summer: false-bottoms

The only source of ice formation in the Arctic during summer is a layer of ice called false-bottoms between an under-ice melt pond and the underlying ocean. Of interest is to give a mathematical model in order to determine the simultaneous growth and ablation of false-bottoms, which is governed by both of heat fluxes and salt fluxes. In one dimension, this problem may be considered mathematically as a two-phase Stefan problem with two free boundaries. Our main result is to prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution from the initial condition.

The body force in a three-dimensional Lame' system: identification and regularization

Let a three-dimensional isotropic elastic body be described by the Lamé system with the body force of the form $F(x,t)=ϕ(t)f(x)$, where $ϕ$ is known. We consider the problem of determining the unknown spatial term $f(x)$ of the body force where the surface stress history is given as the overdetermination. This inverse problem is ill-posed. Using the interpolation method and truncated Fourier series, we construct a regularized solution from approximate data and provide explicit error estimates. AMS 2010 Subject Classification: 35L20, 35R30. Keywords: Body force, elastic, ill$-$posed problem, interpolation, Fourier series.

Bogoliubov theory and bosonic atoms

We formulate the Bogoliubov variational principle in a mathematical framework similar to the generalized Hartree-Fock theory. Then we analyze the Bogoliubov theory for bosonic atoms in details. We discuss heuristically why the Bogoliubov energy should give the first correction to the leading energy of large bosonic atoms.

Asymptotics for Two-dimensional Atoms

We prove that the ground state energy of an atom confined to two dimensions with an infinitely heavy nucleus of charge $Z>0$ and $N$ quantum electrons of charge -1 is $E(N,Z)=-{1/2}Z^2\ln Z+(E^{\TF}(λ)+{1/2}c^{\rm H})Z^2+o(Z^2)$ when $Z\to \infty$ and $N/Z\to λ$, where $E^{\TF}(λ)$ is given by a Thomas-Fermi type variational problem and $c^{\rm H}\approx -2.2339$ is an explicit constant. We also show that the radius of a two-dimensional neutral atom is unbounded when $Z\to \infty$, which is contrary to the expected behavior of three-dimensional atoms.

Determination of the body force of a two-dimensional isotropic elastic body

Let $Ω$ represent a two$-$dimensional isotropic elastic body. We consider the problem of determining the body force $F$ whose form $ϕ(t)(f_1(x),f_2(x))$ with $ϕ$ be given inexactly. The problem is nonlinear and ill-posed. Using the Fourier transform, the methods of Tikhonov's regularization and truncated integration, we construct a regularized solution from the data given inexactly and derive the explicitly error estimate. Determine the spacial term of a two-dimensional heat source

We consider the problem of determining a pair of functions $(u,f)$ satisfying the heat equation $u_t -Δu =φ(t)f (x,y)$, where $(x,y)\in Ω=(0,1)\times (0,1)$ and the function $φ$ is given. The problem is ill-posed. Under a slight condition on $φ$, we show that the solution is determined uniquely from some boundary data and the initial temperature. Using the interpolation method and the truncated Fourier series, we construct a regularized solution of the source term $f$ from non-smooth data. The error estimate and numerical experiments are given.

Determine the source term of a two-dimensional heat equation

Let $Ω$ be a two-dimensional heat conduction body. We consider the problem of determining the heat source $F(x,t)=φ(t)f(x,y)$ with $φ$ be given inexactly and $f$ be unknown. The problem is nonlinear and ill-posed. By a specific form of Fourier transforms, we shall show that the heat source is determined uniquely by the minimum boundary condition and the temperature distribution in $Ω$ at the initial time $t=0$ and at the final time $t=1$. Using the methods of Tikhonov's regularization and truncated integration, we construct the regularized solutions. Numerical part is given.
