Scaling dimensions of Coulomb branch operators of 4d N=2 superconformal field theories

Under reasonable assumptions about the complex structure of the set of singularities on the Coulomb branch of $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal field theories, we present a relatively simple and elementary argument showing that the scaling dimension, $Δ$, of a Coulomb branch operator of a rank $r$ theory is allowed to take values in a finite set of rational numbers$Δ\in \big[\frac{n}{m}\big|n,m\in\mathbb N, 0<m\le n, gcd(n,m)=1,\ φ(n)\le2r\big]$ where $φ(n)$ is the Euler totient function. The maximal dimension grows superlinearly with rank as $Δ_\text{max} \sim r \ln\ln r$. This agrees with the recent result of Caorsi and Cecotti.

Geometric constraints on the space of N=2 SCFTs II: Construction of special Kähler geometries and RG flows

This is the second in a series of three papers on systematic analysis of rank 1 Coulomb branch geometries of four dimensional $\mathcal{N}$=2 SCFTs. In the first paper we developed a strategy for classifying physical rank-1 CB geometries of $\mathcal{N}$=2 SCFTs. Here we show how to carry out this strategy computationally to construct the Seiberg-Witten curves and one-forms for all the rank-1 SCFTs. Explicit expressions are given for all cases, with the exception of the $N_f$=4 SU(2) gauge theory and the En SCFTs which were previously constructed. Our classification includes all known rank-1 theories plus a new one with an abelian flavor group, plus nine additional theories whose existence is more speculative. Four of those, reported in our first paper, depend on the assumption of new frozen rank-1 SCFTs. Here we also also show that the assumption of the existence of certain rank-0 $\mathcal{N}$=2 SCFTs leads to five additional consistent rank-1 CB geometries.

Seiberg-Witten geometries for Coulomb branch chiral rings which are not freely generated

Coulomb branch chiral rings of $\mathcal N=2$ SCFTs are conjectured to be freely generated. While no counter-example is known, no direct evidence for the conjecture is known either. We initiate a systematic study of SCFTs with Coulomb branch chiral rings satisfying non-trivial relations, restricting our analysis to rank 1. The main result of our study is that (rank-1) SCFTs with non-freely generated CB chiral rings when deformed by relevant deformations, always flow to theories with non-freely generated CB rings. This implies that if they exist, they must thus form a distinct subset under RG flows. We also find many interesting characteristic properties that these putative theories satisfy which may behelpful in proving or disproving their existence using other methods.

4d $\mathcal{N}$=2 theories with disconnected gauge groups

In this paper we present a beautifully consistent web of evidence for the existence of interacting 4d rank-1 $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs obtained from gauging discrete subgroups of global symmetries of other existing 4d rank-1 $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs. The global symmetries that can be gauged involve a non-trivial combination of discrete subgroups of the $U(1)_R$, low-energy EM duality group $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$, and the outer automorphism group of the flavor symmetry algebra, Out($F$). The theories that we construct are remarkable in many ways: (i) two of them have exceptional $F_4$ and $G_2$ flavor groups; (ii) they substantially complete the picture of the landscape of rank-1 $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs as they realize all but one of the remaining consistent rank-1 Seiberg-Witten geometries that we previously constructed but were not associated to known SCFTs; and (iii) some of them have enlarged $\mathcal{N}=3$ SUSY, and have not been previously constructed. They are also examples of SCFTs which violate the Shapere-Tachikawa relation between the conformal central charges and the scaling dimension of the Coulomb branch vev. We propose a modification of the formulas computing these central charges from the topologically twisted Coulomb branch partition function which correctly compute them for discretely gauged theories.

Expanding the landscape of $\mathcal{N}$=2 rank 1 SCFTs

We refine our previous proposal for systematically classifying 4d rank-1 $\mathcal N=2$ SCFTs by constructing their possible Coulomb branch geometries. Four new recently discussed rank-1 theories, including novel $\mathcal{N}=3$ SCFTs, sit beautifully in our refined classification framework. By arguing for the consistency of their RG flows we can make a strong case for the existence of at least four additional rank-1 SCFTs, nearly doubling the number of known rank-1 SCFTs. The refinement consists of relaxing the assumption that the flavor symmetries of the SCFTs have no discrete factors. This results in an enlarged (but finite) set of possible rank-1 SCFTs. Their existence can be further constrained using consistency of their central charges and RG flows.

The semi-classical expansion and resurgence in gauge theories: new perturbative, instanton, bion, and renormalon effects

We study the dynamics of four dimensional gauge theories with adjoint fermions for all gauge groups, both in perturbation theory and non-perturbatively, by using circle compactification with periodic boundary conditions for the fermions. There are new gauge phenomena. We show that, to all orders in perturbation theory, many gauge groups are Higgsed by the gauge holonomy around the circle to a product of both abelian and nonabelian gauge group factors. Non-perturbatively there are monopole-instantons with fermion zero modes and two types of monopole-anti-monopole molecules, called bions. One type are "magnetic bions" which carry net magnetic charge and induce a mass gap for gauge fluctuations. Another type are "neutral bions" which are magnetically neutral, and their understanding requires a generalization of multi-instanton techniques in quantum mechanics - which we refer to as the Bogomolny-Zinn-Justin (BZJ) prescription - to compactified field theory. The BZJ prescription applied to bion-anti-bion topological molecules predicts a singularity on the positive real axis of the Borel plane (i.e., a divergence from summing large orders in peturbation theory) which is of order N times closer to the origin than the leading 4-d BPST instanton-anti-instanton singularity, where N is the rank of the gauge group. The position of the bion--anti-bion singularity is thus qualitatively similar to that of the 4-d IR renormalon singularity, and we conjecture that they are continuously related as the compactification radius is changed. By making use of transseries and Ecalle's resurgence theory we argue that a non-perturbative continuum definition of a class of field theories which admit semi-classical expansions may be possible.

Quantum Higgs branches of isolated N=2 superconformal field theories

We study the Higgs branches of the superconformal points of four-dimensional N=2 super Yang-Mills (SYM) which appear due to the occurrence of mutually local monopoles having appropriate charges. We show, for example, that the maximal superconformal point of SU(2n) SYM has a Higgs branch of the form C^2/Z_n. These Higgs branches are intrinsic to the superconformal field theory (SCFT) at the superconformal point, but do not appear in the SYM theory in which it is embedded. This is because the embedding is a UV extension of the SCFT in which some global symmetry acting on the Higgs branch is gauged irrelevantly. Higgs branches deduced from earlier direct studies of these isolated SCFTs using BPS wall-crossing or 3-d mirror symmetry agree with the ones we find here using just the Seiberg-Witten data for the SYM theories.

Mass deformations of four-dimensional, rank 1, N=2 superconformal field theories

Turning on N=2 supersymmetry-preserving relevant operators in a 4-dimensional N=2 superconformal field theory (SCFT) corresponds to a complex deformation compatible with the rigid special Kahler geometry encoded in the low energy effective action. Field theoretic consistency arguments indicate that there should be many distinct such relevant deformations of each SCFT fixed point. Some new supersymmetry-preserving complex deformations are constructed of isolated rank 1 SCFTs. We also make predictions for the dimensions of certain Higgs branches for some rank 1 SCFTs.

Open Wilson Lines and Chiral Condensates in Thermal Holographic QCD

We investigate various aspects of a proposal by Aharony and Kutasov arXiv:0803.3547 [hep-th] for the gravity dual of an open Wilson line in the Sakai-Sugimoto model or its non-compact version. In particular, we use their proposal to determine the effect of finite temperature, as well as background electric and magnetic fields, on the chiral symmetry breaking order parameter. We also generalize their prescription to more complicated worldsheets and identify the operators dual to such worldsheets.

Lightlike Wilson loops from AdS/CFT

We investigate the lightlike limit of stationary spacelike string configurations on a large class of five-dimensional asymptotically AdS backgrounds. Specific examples include gravity duals which incorporate finite 't Hooft coupling, curvature-squared corrections, and chemical potentials. A universal feature of these AdS/CFT models is that the string solution with minimum action yields a lightlike Wilson loop whose leading behavior is exponentially linear, rather than quadratic, in the width of the loop. Unless there is a compelling reason for discarding the leading saddlepoint contribution to the Wilson loop, following the proposal of Liu et. al. [2] leads to zero jet-quenching parameter for all of these models.

Infinite coupling duals of N=2 gauge theories and new rank 1 superconformal field theories

We show that a proposed duality [arXiv:0711.0054] between infinitely coupled gauge theories and superconformal field theories (SCFTs) with weakly gauged flavor groups predicts the existence of new rank 1 SCFTs. These superconformal fixed point theories have the same Coulomb branch singularities as the rank 1 E_6, E_7, and E_8 SCFTs, but have smaller flavor symmetry algebras and different central charges. Gauging various subalgebras of the flavor algebras of these rank 1 SCFTs provides many examples of infinite-coupling dualities, satisfying an intricate set of consistency checks. They also provide examples of N=2 conformal theories with marginal couplings but no weak-coupling limits.

S-duality in N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories

A solution to the infinite coupling problem for N=2 conformal supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions is presented. The infinitely-coupled theories are argued to be interacting superconformal field theories (SCFTs) with weakly gauged flavor groups. Consistency checks of this proposal are found by examining some low-rank examples. As part of these checks, we show how to compute new exact quantities in these SCFTs: the central charges of their flavor current algebras. Also, the isolated rank 1 E_6 and E_7 SCFTs are found as limits of Lagrangian field theories.

No-Drag String Configurations for Steadily Moving Quark-Antiquark Pairs in a Thermal Bath

We investigate the behavior of stationary string configurations on a five-dimensional AdS black hole background which correspond to quark-antiquark pairs steadily moving in an N=4 super Yang-Mills thermal bath. There are many branches of solutions, depending on the quark velocity and separation as well as on whether Euclidean or Lorentzian configurations are examined.

Spacelike strings and jet quenching from a Wilson loop

We investigate stationary string solutions with spacelike worldsheet in a five-dimensional AdS black hole background, and find that there are many branches of such solutions. Using a non-perturbative definition of the jet quenching parameter proposed by Liu et. al., hep-ph/0605178, we take the lightlike limit of these solutions to evaluate the jet quenching parameter in an N=4 super Yang-Mills thermal bath. We show that this proposed definition gives zero jet quenching parameter, independent of how the lightlike limit is taken. In particular, the minimum-action solution giving the dominant contribution to the Wilson loop has a leading behavior that is linear, rather than quadratic, in the quark separation.

On S-duality for Non-Simply-Laced Gauge Groups

We point out that for N=4 gauge theories with exceptional gauge groups G_2 and F_4 the S-duality transformation acts on the moduli space by a nontrivial involution. We note that the duality groups of these theories are the Hecke groups with elliptic elements of order six and four, respectively. These groups extend certain subgroups of SL(2,Z) by elements with a non-trivial action on the moduli space. We show that under an embedding of these gauge theories into string theory, the Hecke duality groups are represented by T-duality transformations.

Sp(N) higher-derivative F-terms via singular superpotentials

We generalize the higher-derivative F-terms introduced by Beasley and Witten (hep-th/0409149) for SU(2) superQCD to Sp(N) gauge theories with fundamental matter. We generate these terms by integrating out massive modes at tree level from an effective superpotential on the chiral ring of the microscopic theory. Though this superpotential is singular, its singularities are mild enough to permit the unambiguous identification of its minima, and gives sensible answers upon integrating out massive modes near any given minimum.

Generalized Konishi anomaly, Seiberg duality and singular effective superpotentials

Using the generalized Konishi anomaly (GKA) equations, we derive the effective superpotential of four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric SU(n) gauge theory with n+2 fundamental flavors. We find, however, that the GKA equations are only integrable in the Seiberg dual description of the theory, but not in the direct description of the theory. The failure of integrability in the direct, strongly coupled, description suggests the existence of non-perturbative corrections to the GKA equations.

On singular effective superpotentials in supersymmetric gauge theories

We study N=1 supersymmetric SU(2) gauge theory in four dimensions with a large number of massless quarks. We argue that effective superpotentials as a function of local gauge-invariant chiral fields should exist for these theories. We show that although the superpotentials are singular, they nevertheless correctly describe the moduli space of vacua, are consistent under RG flow to fewer flavors upon turning on masses, and also reproduce by a tree-level calculation the higher-derivative F-terms calculated by Beasely and Witten (hep-th/0409149) using instanton methods. We note that this phenomenon can also occur in supersymmetric gauge theories in various dimensions.
