Polymorphic Automorphisms and the Picard Group

We investigate the concept of definable, or inner, automorphism in the logical setting of partial Horn theories. The central technical result extends a syntactical characterization of the group of such automorphisms (called the covariant isotropy group) associated with an algebraic theory to the wider class of quasi-equational theories. We apply this characterization to prove that the isotropy group of a strict monoidal category is precisely its Picard group of invertible objects. Furthermore, we obtain an explicit description of the covariant isotropy group of a presheaf category.

Partially traced categories

This paper deals with questions relating to Haghverdi and Scott's notion of partially traced categories. The main result is a representation theorem for such categories: we prove that every partially traced category can be faithfully embedded in a totally traced category. Also conversely, every symmetric monoidal subcategory of a totally traced category is partially traced, so this characterizes the partially traced categories completely. The main technique we use is based on Freyd's paracategories, along with a partial version of Joyal, Street, and Verity's Int-construction.
