Finite Temperature Density Instability at High Landau Level Occupancy

We study here the onset of charge density wave instabilities in quantum Hall systems at finite temperature for Landau level filling $ν>4$. Specific emphasis is placed on the role of disorder as well as an in-plane magnetic field. Beyond some critical value, disorder is observed to suppress the charge density wave melting temperature to zero. In addition, we find that a transition from perpendicular to parallel stripes (relative to the in-plane magnetic field) exists when the electron gas thickness exceeds $\approx 60$Å. The perpendicular alignment of the stripes is in agreement with the experimental finding that the easy conduction direction is perpendicular to the in-plane field.

Fluctuation Conductivity in Insulator-Superconductor Transitions with Dissipation

We analyze here the fluctuation conductivity in the vicinity of the critical point in a 2D Josephson junction array shunted by an Ohmic resistor. We find that at the Gaussian level, the conductivity acquires a logarithmic dependence on $T/(T-T_c)$ when the dissipation is sufficiently small. In the renormalized classical regime, this logarithmic dependence gives rise to a leveling-off of the resistivity at low to intermediate temperatures when fluctuations are included. We show, however, that this trend does not persist to T=0 at which point the resistivity vanishes. The possible relationship of the leveling of the resistivity to the low temperature transport in granlar superconductors is discussed.

Landau theory of bi-criticality in a random quantum rotor system

We consider here a generalization of the random quantum rotor model in which each rotor is characterized by an M-component vector spin. We focus entirely on the case not considered previously, namely when the distribution of exchange interactions has non-zero mean. Inclusion of non-zero mean permits ferromagnetic and superconducting phases for M=1 and M=2, respectively. We find that quite generally, the Landau theory for this system can be recast as a zero-mean problem in the presence of a magnetic field. Naturally then, we find that a Gabay-Toulouse line exists for $M>1$ when the distribution of exchange interactions has non-zero mean. The solution to the saddle point equations is presented in the vicinity of the bi-critical point characterized by the intersection of the ferromagnetic (M=1) or superconducting (M=2) phase with the paramagnetic and spin glass phases. All transitions are observed to be second order. At zero temperature, we find that the ferromagnetic order parameter is non-analytic in the parameter that controls the paramagnet/ferromagnet transition in the absence of disorder. Also for M=1, we find that replica symmetry breaking is present but vanishes at low temperatures. In addition, at finite temperature, we find that the qualitative features of the phase diagram, for M=1, are {\it identical} to what is observed experimentally in the random magnetic alloy $LiHo_xY_{1-x}F_4$.

Superconductivity in a two-dimensional Electron Gas

In a series of recent experiments, Kravchenko and colleagues observed unexpectedly that a two-dimensional electron gas in zero magnetic field can be a conductor. The two-dimensionality was imposed by confining the electron gas to move laterally at the interface between two semiconductors. The observation of a conductor in two dimensions (2D) is surprising as the conventional theory of metals precludes the presence of a metallic state at zero temperature in 2D. Nonetheless, there are now several experiments confirming the existence of the new conducting phase in a dilute two-dimensional electron gas in zero magnetic field. Here we argue based on an analysis of the experiments and general theoretical grounds that this phase is a zero-temperature superconductor with an inhomogeneous charge density.

Local Pairing at U-impurities in BCS Superconductors

We analyse here the role electrons on Anderson-U impurities play in superconductivity in a metal alloy. We find that phonon coupling at impurities counteracts the traditional effects which dominate T_c suppression in the non-magnetic limit. In some cases, we findt hat non-magnetic impurities can enhance T_c. In the Kondo limit, a Fermi liquid analysis reveals that it is the enhancement in the density of states arising from the Kondo resonancethat counteracts pair-weakening.

Positive Magneto-Resistance in Quasi-1D Conductors

We present here a simple qualitative model that interpolates between the high and low temperature properties of quasi-1D conductors. At high temperatures we argue that transport is governed by inelastic scattering whereas at low temperatures the conductance decays exponentially with the electron dephasing length. The crossover between these regimes occurs at the temperature at which the elastic and inelastic scattering times become equal. This model is shown to be in quantitative agreement with the organic conductor $TTT_2I_{3-δ}$. Within this model, we also show that on the insulating side, the positive magnetoresistance of the form $(H/T)^2$ observed in $TTT_2I_{3-δ}$ and other quasi-1D conductors can be explained by the role spin-flip scattering plays in the electron dephasing rate.

Enhanced Local Moment Formation in a Chiral Luttinger Liquid

We derive here a stability condition for a local moment in the presence of an interacting sea of conduction electrons. The conduction electrons are modeled as a Luttinger liquid in which chirality and spin are coupled. We show that an Anderson-U defect in such an interacting system can be transformed onto a nearly-Fermi liquid problem. We find that correlations among the conduction electrons stabilize the local moment phase. A Schrieffer-Wolff transformation is then performed which results in an anisotropic exchange interaction indicative of the Kondo effect in a Luttinger liquid. The ground-state properties of this model are then equivalent to those of the Kondo model in a Luttinger liquid.

Size Dependence In The Disordered Kondo Problem

We study here the role randomly-placed non-magnetic scatterers play on the Kondo effect. We show that spin relaxation effects (with time $τ_s^o$)in the vertex corrections to the Kondo self-energy lead to an exact cancellation of the singular temperature dependence arising from the diffusion poles. For a thin film of thickness $L$ and a mean-free path $\ell$, disorder provides a correction to the Kondo resistivity of the form $τ_s^o/(k_FL\ell^2)\ln T$ that explains both the disorder and sample-size depression of the Kondo effect observed by Blachly and Giordano (PRB {\bf 51}, 12537 (1995)).

Pair Tunneling in Semiconductor Quantum Dots

We propose here a model for the pair tunneling states observed by Ashoori and co-workers (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 68}, 3088 (1992)) in GaAs quantum dots. We show that while GaAs is a weakly-polar semiconductor, coupling to optical phonons is sufficiently strong to mediate a negative-U pairing state. The physical potential in which the two electrons are bound can be composed of a Si impurity and a parabolic well that originates from the potential created by the $δ-$dopants in the backing layer of the dot. Such a pair state breaks up at moderate magnetic field strengths ($\approx$ 2 T), as is seen experimentally, and is unstable when the confining radius of the dot is smaller than $\approx 400$Å.

On a class of integrable interacting electronic systems with off-diagonal disorder

We report a class of {\it integrable} one-dimensional interacting electronic sy$ with {\it off-diagonal disorder}. For these systems, the disorder can be ``gauged away,''and the spectrum can be mapped completely onto the spectrum of the ordered problem, which can be solved by Bethe ansatz or by bosonization. We study the magnetic properties of the persistent currents in mesoscopic rings in the case in which the ordered system is a Luttinger liquid. The system can be paramagnetic or diamagnetic, depending on the amount of the disorder and the number of fermions in the system.

Suppression of the Kondo Effect in Quantum Dots by Even-Odd Asymmetry

We analyze here a model for single-electron charging in semiconductor quantum dots that includes the standard Anderson on-site repulsion (U) as well as the spin-exchange ($J_d$) that is inherently present among the electrons occupying the various quantum levels of the dot. We show explicitly that for ferromagnetic coupling ($J_d>0$), an s-d exchange for an S=1 Kondo problem is recovered. In contrast, for the antiferromagnetic case, $J_d<0$, we find that the Kondo effect is present only if there are an odd number of electrons on the dot. In addition, we find that spin-exchange produces a second period in the conductance that is consistent with experimental measurements.
