On a family of singular potentials: Parameter dependence of thermodynamic characteristics

We consider the family of singular potentials $\psi_c = 2 \log(|\sin(\pi(x-c))|)$, $c\in \mathbb{T}$ over the doubling map and we examine the dependence of several thermodynamic and multifractal characteristics on the position of the singularity $c$. This includes the pressure functions $\mathcal P(t \psi_c)$, the Birkhoff spectrum of $\psi_c$, and the $L^q$ spectrum of the associated equilibrium measure $\mu_c$. For every $c \in \mathbb{T}$, it is known that $\mu_c$ is given by the diffraction measure of a generalized Thue--Morse sequence, with the classical Thue--Morse measure arising for $c = 0$. If $t\geqslant 0$, we show that $c \mapsto \mathcal{P}(t\psi_c)$ is continuous in $c$. If $t<0$, we prove that the function $c \mapsto \mathcal{P}(t\psi_c)$ is lower semicontinuous but not continuous. In this case, we show that the continuity points are precisely those values $c$ such that $\mathcal{P}(t\psi_c) = \infty$, which form a residual set of vanishing Hausdorff dimension in $\mathbb{T}$. We obtain similar statements about the parameter (semi-)continuity of the $L^q$ spectrum and the Birkhoff spectrum.

Generalized Thue-Morse measures: spectral and fractal analysis

We investigate a family of Riesz products and show that they can be regarded as diffraction measures of generalized Thue-Morse sequences, possibly over an infinite alphabet. These measures are closely related to the dynamical system arising from the doubling map together with an observable exhibiting a logarithmic singularity. For this system, we develop a generalized thermodynamic formalism beyond the standard setting, which yields explicit formulas for Birkhoff and dimension spectra. A further novel aspect is the identification of a precise connection between these spectra and the $L^q$-spectrum of the underlying Riesz product. This new link allows us to determine, explicitly, the Fourier and quantization dimension, and to describe the spectral asymptotics of the associated Kre\u{i}n-Feller operator, providing new insights into the interplay between diffraction, fractal geometry, and spectral theory in the Thue-Morse context.

A classification of intrinsic ergodicity for recognisable random substitution systems

We study a class of dynamical systems generated by random substitutions, which contains both intrinsically ergodic systems and instances with several measures of maximal entropy. In this class, we show that the measures of maximal entropy are classified by invariance under an appropriate symmetry relation. All measures of maximal entropy are fully supported and they are generally not Gibbs measures. We prove that there is a unique measure of maximal entropy if and only if an associated Markov chain is ergodic in inverse time. This Markov chain has finitely many states and all transition matrices are explicitly computable. Thereby, we obtain several sufficient conditions for intrinsic ergodicity that are easy to verify. A practical way to compute the topological entropy in terms of inflation words is extended from previous work to a more general geometric setting.

Rauzy fractals of random substitutions

We develop a theory of Rauzy fractals for random substitutions, which are a generalisation of deterministic substitutions where the substituted image of a letter is determined by a Markov process. We show that a Rauzy fractal can be associated with a given random substitution in a canonical manner, under natural assumptions on the random substitution. Further, we show the existence of a natural measure supported on the Rauzy fractal, which we call the Rauzy measure, that captures geometric and dynamical information. We provide several different constructions for the Rauzy fractal and Rauzy measure, which we show coincide, and ascertain various analytic, dynamical and geometric properties. While the Rauzy fractal is independent of the choice of (non-degenerate) probabilities assigned to a given random substitution, the Rauzy measure captures the explicit choice of probabilities. Moreover, Rauzy measures vary continuously with the choice of probabilities, thus provide a natural means of interpolating between Rauzy fractals of deterministic substitutions. Additionally, we highlight connections between Rauzy fractals and Rauzy measures of random substitutions and related S-adic systems.

Orbit separation dimension as complexity measure for primitive inflation tilings

Orbit separation dimension (OSD), previously introduced as amorphic complexity, is a powerful complexity measure for topological dynamical systems with pure-point spectrum. Here, we develop methods and tools for it that allow a systematic application to translation dynamical systems of tiling spaces that are generated by primitive inflation rules. These systems share many nice properties that permit the explicit computation of the OSD, thus providing a rich class of examples with non-trivial OSD.

Spectral theory of regular sequences: parametrisation and spectral characterisation

We extend the existence of ghost measures beyond nonnegative primitive regular sequences to a large class of nonnegative real-valued regular sequences. In the general case, where the ghost measure is not unique, we show that they can be parametrised by a compact abelian group. For a subclass of these measures, by replacing primitivity with a commutativity condition, we show that these measures have an infinite convolution structure similar to Bernoulli convolutions. Using this structure, we show that these ghost measures have pure spectral type. Further, we provide results towards a classification of the spectral type based on inequalities involving the spectral radius, joint spectral radius, and Lyapunov exponent of the underlying set of matrices. In the case that the underlying measure is pure point, we show that the support of the measure must be a subset of the rational numbers, a result that resolves a new case of the finiteness conjecture.

Fast dimension spectrum for a potential with a logarithmic singularity

We regard the classic Thue--Morse diffraction measure as an equilibrium measure for a potential function with a logarithmic singularity over the doubling map. Our focus is on unusually fast scaling of the Birkhoff sums (superlinear) and of the local measure decay (superpolynomial). For several scaling functions, we show that points with this behavior are abundant in the sense of full Hausdorff dimension. At the fastest possible scaling, the corresponding rates reveal several remarkable phenomena. There is a gap between level sets for dyadic rationals and non-dyadic points, and beyond dyadic rationals, non-zero accumulation points occur only within intervals of positive length. The dependence between the smallest and the largest accumulation point also manifests itself in a non-trivial joint dimension spectrum.

Spectral Characteristics of Schrödinger Operators Generated by Product Systems

We study ergodic Schrödinger operators defined over product dynamical systems in which one factor is periodic and the other factor is either a subshift over a finite alphabet or an irrational rotation of the circle. In the case in which one factor is a Boshernitzan subshift, we prove that either the resulting operators are periodic or the resulting spectra must be Cantor sets. The main ingredient is a suitable stability result for Boshernitzan's criterion under taking products. We also discuss the stability of purely singular continuous spectrum, which, given the zero-measure spectrum result, amounts to stability results for eigenvalue exclusion. In particular, we examine situations in which the existing criteria for the exclusion of eigenvalues are stable under periodic perturbations. As a highlight of this, we show that any simple Toeplitz subshift over a binary alphabet exhibits uniform absence of eigenvalues on the hull for any periodic perturbation whose period is commensurate with the coding sequence. In the case of a full shift, we give an effective criterion to compute exactly the spectrum of a random Anderson model perturbed by a potential of period two, and we further show that the naive generalization of this criterion does not hold for period three. Next, we consider quasi-periodic potentials with potentials generated by trigonometric polynomials with periodic background. We show that the quasiperiodic cocycle induced by passing to blocks of period length is subcritical when the coupling constant is small and supercritical when the coupling constant is large. Thus, the spectral type is absolutely continuous for small coupling and pure point (for a.e.\ frequency and phase) when the coupling is large.

On a family of singular continuous measures related to the doubling map

Here, we study some measures that can be represented by infinite Riesz products of 1-periodic functions and are related to the doubling map. We show that these measures are purely singular continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure and that their distribution functions satisfy super-polynomial asymptotics near the origin, thus providing a family of extremal examples of singular measures, including the Thue--Morse measure.

Measure theoretic entropy of random substitution subshifts

Subshifts of deterministic substitutions are ubiquitous objects in dynamical systems and aperiodic order (the mathematical theory of quasicrystals). Two of their most striking features are that they have low complexity (zero topological entropy) and are uniquely ergodic. Random substitutions are a generalisation of deterministic substitutions where the substituted image of a letter is determined by a Markov process. In stark contrast to their deterministic counterparts, subshifts of random substitutions often have positive topological entropy, and support uncountably many ergodic measures. The underlying Markov process singles out one of the ergodic measures, called the frequency measure. Here, we develop new techniques for computing and studying the entropy of these frequency measures. As an application of our results, we obtain closed form formulas for the entropy of frequency measures for a wide range of random substitution subshifts and show that in many cases there exists a frequency measure of maximal entropy. Further, for a class of random substitution subshifts, we prove that this measure is the unique measure of maximal entropy. These subshifts do not satisfy Bowen's specification property or the weaker specification property of Climenhaga and Thompson and hence provide an interesting new class of intrinsically ergodic subshifts.

Zero Measure Spectrum for Multi-Frequency Schrödinger Operators

Building on works of Berthé--Steiner--Thuswaldner and Fogg--Nous we show that on the two-dimensional torus, Lebesgue almost every translation admits a natural coding such that the associated subshift satisfies the Boshernitzan criterion. As a consequence we show that for these torus translations, every quasi-periodic potential can be approximated uniformly by one for which the associated Schrödinger operator has Cantor spectrum of zero Lebesgue measure. We also describe a framework that can allow this to be extended to higher-dimensional tori.

Spectral properties of Schrödinger operators associated to almost minimal substitution systems

We study the spectral properties of ergodic Schrödinger operators that are associated to a certain family of non-primitive substitutions on a binary alphabet. The corresponding subshifts provide examples of dynamical systems that go beyond minimality, unique ergodicity and linear complexity. In some parameter region, we are naturally in the setting of an infinite ergodic measure. The almost sure spectrum is singular and contains an interval. Some criteria for the exclusion of eigenvalues are fully characterized, including the existence of strongly palindromic sequences. Many of our structural insights rely on return word decompositions in the context of non-uniformly recurrent sequences. We introduce an associated induced system that is conjugate to an odometer.

Ergodic frequency measures for random substitutions

We construct a family of ergodic measures on random substitution subshifts (RS-subshifts) associated to a primitive random substitution. In particular, the word frequencies of every finite legal word exist for almost every element of the random substitution subshift with respect to these measures. As an application, we show that for a certain class of random substitutions the measures of maximal entropy are frequency measures.

Scaling properties of the Thue--Morse measure

The classic Thue--Morse measure is a paradigmatic example of a purely singular continuous probability measure on the unit interval. Since it has a representation as an infinite Riesz product, many aspects of this measure have been studied in the past, including various scaling properties and a partly heuristic multifractal analysis. Some of the difficulties emerge from the appearance of an unbounded potential in the thermodynamic formalism. It is the purpose of this article to review and prove some of the observations that were previously established via numerical or scaling arguments.

Inflation word entropy for semi-compatible random substitutions

We introduce the concept of inflation word entropy for random substitutions with a constant and primitive substitution matrix. Previous calculations of the topological entropy of such systems implicitly used this concept and established equality of topological entropy and inflation word entropy, relying on ad hoc methods. We present a unified scheme, proving that inflation word entropy and topological entropy in fact coincide. The topological entropy is approximated by a converging series of upper and lower bounds which, in many cases, lead to an analytic expression.

Shifts of finite type and random substitutions

We prove that every topologically transitive shift of finite type in one dimension is topologically conjugate to a subshift arising from a primitive random substitution on a finite alphabet. As a result, we show that the set of values of topological entropy which can be attained by random substitution subshifts contains all Perron numbers and so is dense in the positive real numbers. We also provide an independent proof of this density statement using elementary methods.
