Measuring Light-Meson Resonances in the $\omega\pi^-\pi^0$ and $K_S^0 K^-$ Final States at COMPASS

COMPASS is a multi-purpose fixed-target experiment at the CERN SPS. One of its main goals is to probe the strong interaction at low energies by studying the excitation spectrum of light mesons in diffractive scattering reactions of a $190\ \text{GeV}/c$ $\pi^-$ beam. The analysis is done by first decomposing the data into partial-wave amplitudes with well-defined quantum numbers, and second, extracting meson resonance parameters from these amplitudes. We have collected the world's largest datasets of various final states. In this talk, we will focus on two of them: $\omega\pi^-\pi^0$ and $K_S^0 K^-$. They allow us to study light isovector mesons with spin, parity, and $C$-parity $J^{PC} = J^{++}$ and $J^{-+}$, i.e.\ $a_J$ and $\pi_J$ mesons. We will discuss the analysis and present new measurements of resonance parameters of several light mesons. The main focus of the $\omega\pi^-\pi^0$ analysis lies in the investigation of the nature of the $\pi_1(1600)$. Being a good candidate for the lightest hybrid meson, it is expected to predominantly decay into $b_1(1235)\pi$. In addition, the $\omega\pi^-\pi^0$ final state also gives access to other decay modes of the $\pi_1(1600)$, further testing theory predictions, and to a range of other $a_J$ and $\pi_J$ mesons. In the $K_S^0 K^-$ final state, only $a_J$ mesons with even spin $J$ appear, due to the high beam energy of COMPASS. This allows for an exclusive study of these mesons, up to high invariant masses, verifying the existence of several states claimed by other experiments and measuring their parameters.

Breadboarding the European Moon Rover System: discussion and results of the analogue field test campaign

This document compiles results obtained from the test campaign of the European Moon Rover System (EMRS) project. The test campaign, conducted at the Planetary Exploration Lab of DLR in Wessling, aimed to understand the scope of the EMRS breadboard design, its strengths, and the benefits of the modular design. The discussion of test results is based on rover traversal analyses, robustness assessments, wheel deflection analyses, and the overall transportation cost of the rover. This not only enables the comparison of locomotion modes on lunar regolith but also facilitates critical decision-making in the design of future lunar missions.

Non-strange light-meson spectroscopy at COMPASS

Lattice-QCD predicts the exotic meson $\pi_1(1600)$ to dominantly decay to $b_1\pi$. The $b_1\pi$ decay channel is accessible via the $\omega\pi^{-}\pi^{0}$ final state. COMPASS recorded the so far largest data set of this final state. A partial-wave analysis allows to determine the resonant content in this final state including possible contributions from $\pi_1(1600)$. Decomposing the measured intensity into amplitudes of partial waves gives a first qualitative insight into contributing intermediate states. We observe signals in agreement with well-established states like the $\pi(1800)$ and $a_4(1970)$. Smaller resonance-like signals are visible in the $J^{PC}$ sectors $3^{++}$ and $6^{++}$, where possible states were claimed but none are established. For $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ a signal at $1.65\,\mathrm{GeV/}c^{2}$ in $b_1(1235)\pi$ partial waves is consistent with the expected $\pi_1(1600)$.

Systematic investigation of a family of gradient-dependent functionals for solids

Eleven density functionals are compared with regard to their performance for the lattice constants of solids. We consider standard functionals, such as the local-density approximation and the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) generalized-gradient approximation (GGA), as well as variations of PBE GGA, such as PBEsol and similar functionals, PBE-type functionals employing a tighter Lieb-Oxford bound, and combinations thereof. Several of these variations are proposed here for the first time. On a test set of 60 solids we perform a system-by-system analysis for selected functionals and a full statistical analysis for all of them. The impact of restoring the gradient expansion and of tightening the Lieb-Oxford bound is discussed, and confronted with previous results obtained from other codes, functionals or test sets. No functional is uniformly good for all investigated systems, but surprisingly, and pleasingly, the simplest possible modifications to PBE turn out to have the most beneficial effect on its performance. The atomization energy of molecules was also considered and on a testing set of six molecules, we found that the PBE functional is clearly the best, the others leading to strong overbinding.
