The Tate-Voloch Conjecture in a Power of a Modular Curve

Let $p$ be a prime. Tate and Voloch proved that a point of finite order in the algebraic torus cannot be $p$-adically too close to a fixed subvariety without lying on it. The current work is motivated by the analogy between torsion points on semi-abelian varieties and special or CM points on Shimura varieties. We prove the analog of Tate and Voloch's result in a power of the modular curve Y(1) on replacing torsion points by points corresponding to a product of elliptic curves with complex multiplication and ordinary reduction. Moreover, we show that the assumption on ordinary reduction is necessary.

Small Height and Infinite Non-Abelian Extensions

Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over the rationals without complex multiplication. The field $F$ generated by all torsion points of $E$ is an infinite, non-abelian Galois extension of the rationals which has unbounded, wild ramification above all primes. We prove that the absolute logarithmic Weil height of an element of $F$ is either zero or bounded from below by a positive constant depending only on $E$. We also show that the Néron-Tate height has a similar gap on $E(F)$ and use this to determine the structure of the group $E(F)$.

Effective Height Upper Bounds on Algebraic Tori

The main emphasis will be on height upper bounds in the algebraic torus G^{n}_{m}. By height we will mean the absolute logarithmic Weil height. Section 3.2 contains a precise definition of this and other more general height functions. The first appendix gives a short overview of known results in the abelian case. The second appendix contains a few height bounds in Shimura varieties.

Special Points on Fibered Powers of Elliptic Surfaces

Consider a fibered power of an elliptic surface. We characterize its subvarieties that contain a Zariski dense set of points that are torsion points in fibers with complex multiplication. This result can be viewed as a mix of the Manin-Mumford and André-Oort Conjecture and is related to a conjecture of Pink. The main technical tool is a new height inequality. We also use it to give another proof of a case of Gubler's result on the Bogomolov Conjecture over function fields.

Torsion Points on Elliptic Curves in Weierstrass Form

We prove that there are only finitely many complex numbers $a$ and $b$ with $4a^3+27b^2\not=0$ such that the three points $(1,*),(2,*),$ and $(3,*)$ are simultaneously torsion on the elliptic curve defined in Weierstrass form by $y^2=x^3+ax+b$. This gives an affirmative answer to a question raised by Masser and Zannier. We thus confirm a special case in two dimensions of the relative Manin-Mumford Conjecture formulated by Pink and Masser-Zannier.
