Evolutionary Data Theory: On the Similarities between Data Problems and Evolutionary Games

Applying the concepts and formalism from Evolutionary Game Theory to the data regime, the fundamental paradigms of Evolutionary Data Theory are introduced. It is shown that essential definitions and results such as replicator equations, evolutionary strategies, the Bishop-Cannings theorem and the analogy to Lotka-Volterra systems can be mapped to the data interpretation. Understanding data in matrix form as evolutionary entities, input data is mapped to genes and organisms. Steered by genetic fitness and two evolutionary strategies, Dominant-Balanced and Altruistic-Selfish, data records and features conduct an evolutionary game. It is shown that this evolutionary interpretation remains universally meaningful, by proving convergence to a unique rest point, where all data features persist in the population. A basic example of multi-objective optimization is shown as well as a related distribution problem and machine learning applications.

Feature weighting for data analysis via evolutionary simulation

We analyze an algorithm for assigning weights prior to scalarization in discrete multi-objective problems arising from data analysis. The algorithm evolves weights (interpreted as the relevance of features) by a replicator-type dynamic on the standard simplex, with update indices computed from a normalized data matrix. We prove that the resulting sequence converges globally to a unique interior equilibrium, yielding non-degenerate limiting weights.

Genetic AI: Evolutionary Games for ab initio dynamic Multi-Objective Optimization

We introduce Genetic AI, a novel method for multi-objective optimization without external parameters or predefined weights. The method can be applied to all problems that can be formulated in matrix form and allows for a data-less training of AI models. Without employing predefined rules or training data, Genetic AI first converts the input data into genes and organisms. In a simulation from first principles, these genes and organisms compete for fitness, where their behavior is governed by universal evolutionary strategies. We present four evolutionary strategies: Dominant, Altruistic, Balanced and Selfish and show how a linear combination can be employed in a fully self-consistent evolutionary game. Investigating fitness and evolutionary stable equilibriums, Genetic AI helps solving optimization problems with a set of predefined, discrete solutions that change dynamically. We show the universality of the approach on two decision problems.

Microscopic understanding of the orbital splitting and its tuning at oxide interfaces

By means of a Wannier projection within the framework of density functional theory, we are able to identify the modified c-axis hopping and the energy mismatch between the cation bands as the main source of the $t_{2g}$ splitting around the $Γ$ point for oxide heterostructures, excluding previously proposed mechanisms such as Jahn-Teller distortions or electric field asymmetries. Interfacing LaAlO$_3$, LaVO$_3$, SrVO$_3$ and SrNbO$_3$ with SrTiO$_3$ we show how to tune this orbital splitting, designing heterostructures with more $d_{xy}$ electrons at the interface. Such an "orbital engineering" is the key for controlling the physical properties at the interface of oxide heterostructures.

Effects of electronic correlations and disorder on the thermopower of NaxCoO2

For the thermoelectric properties of NaxCoO2, we analyze the effect of local Coulomb interaction and (disordered) potential differences for Co-sites with adjacent Na-ion or vacancy. The disorder potential alone increases the resistivity and reduces the thermopower, while the Coulomb interaction alone leads only to minor changes compared to the one-particle picture of the local density approximation. Only combined, these two terms give rise to a substantial increase of the thermopower: the number of (quasi-)electrons around the Fermi level is much more suppressed than that of the (quasi-)holes. Hence, there is a particle-hole imbalance acting in the same direction as a similar imbalance for the group velocities. Together, this interplay results in a large positive thermopower. Introducing a thermoelectric spectral density, we located the energies and momenta regions most relevant for the thermopower and changes thereof.

Wien2wannier: From linearized augmented plane waves to maximally localized Wannier functions

We present an implementaion of interface between the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave package Wien2k and the wannier90 code for the construction of maximally localized Wannier functions. The FORTRAN code and a documentation is made available and results are discussed for SrVO$_3$, Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ (including spin-orbit coupling), LaFeAsO, and FeSb$_2$.
