ThermoElectric Transport Properties of a Chain of Quantum Dots with Self-Consistent Reservoirs

We introduce a model for charge and heat transport based on the Landauer-Buttiker scattering approach. The system consists of a chain of $N$ quantum dots, each of them being coupled to a particle reservoir. Additionally, the left and right ends of the chain are coupled to two particle reservoirs. All these reservoirs are independent and can be described by any of the standard physical distributions: Maxwell-Boltzmann, Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein. In the linear response regime, and under some assumptions, we first describe the general transport properties of the system. Then we impose the self-consistency condition, i.e. we fix the boundary values (T_L,μ_L) and (T_R,mu_R), and adjust the parameters (T_i,mu_i), for i = 1,...,N, so that the net average electric and heat currents into all the intermediate reservoirs vanish. This condition leads to expressions for the temperature and chemical potential profiles along the system, which turn out to be independent of the distribution describing the reservoirs. We also determine the average electric and heat currents flowing through the system and present some numerical results, using random matrix theory, showing that these currents are typically governed by Ohm and Fourier laws.

Controllability for chains of dynamical scatterers

In this paper, we consider a class of mechanical models which consists of a linear chain of identical chaotic cells, each of which has two small lateral holes and contains a rotating disk at its center. Particles are injected at characteristic temperatures and rates from stochastic heat baths located at both ends of the chain. Once in the system, the particles move freely within the cells and will experience elastic collisions with the outer boundary of the cells as well as with the disks. They do not interact with each other but can transfer energy from one to another through collisions with the disks. The state of the system is defined by the positions and velocities of the particles and by the angular positions and angular velocities of the disks. We show that each model in this class is controllable with respect to the baths, i.e. we prove that the action of the baths can drive the system from any state to any other state in a finite time. As a consequence, one obtains the existence of at most one regular invariant measure characterizing its states (out of equilibrium).

Time delay for one-dimensional quantum systems with steplike potentials

This paper concerns time-dependent scattering theory and in particular the concept of time delay for a class of one-dimensional anisotropic quantum systems. These systems are described by a Schrödinger Hamiltonian $H = -Δ+ V$ with a potential $V(x)$ converging to different limits $V_{\ell}$ and $V_{r}$ as $x \to -\infty$ and $x \to +\infty$ respectively. Due to the anisotropy they exhibit a two-channel structure. We first establish the existence and properties of the channel wave and scattering operators by using the modern Mourre approach. We then use scattering theory to show the identity of two apparently different representations of time delay. The first one is defined in terms of sojourn times while the second one is given by the Eisenbud-Wigner operator. The identity of these representations is well known for systems where $V(x)$ vanishes as $|x| \to \infty$ ($V_\ell = V_r$). We show that it remains true in the anisotropic case $V_\ell \not = V_r$, i.e. we prove the existence of the time-dependent representation of time delay and its equality with the time-independent Eisenbud-Wigner representation. Finally we use this identity to give a time-dependent interpretation of the Eisenbud-Wigner expression which is commonly used for time delay in the literature.
