Thermodynamic properties of the Shastry-Sutherland model from quantum Monte Carlo simulations

We investigate the minus-sign problem that afflicts quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations of frustrated quantum spin systems, focusing on spin S=1/2, two spatial dimensions, and the extended Shastry-Sutherland model. We show that formulating the Hamiltonian in the diagonal dimer basis leads to a sign problem that becomes negligible at low temperatures for small and intermediate values of the ratio of the inter- and intradimer couplings. This is a consequence of the fact that the product state of dimer singlets is the exact ground state both of the extended Shastry-Sutherland model and of a corresponding "sign-problem-free" model, obtained by changing the signs of all positive off-diagonal matrix elements in the dimer basis. By exploiting this insight, we map the sign problem throughout the extended parameter space from the Shastry-Sutherland to the fully frustrated bilayer model and compare it with the phase diagram computed by tensor-network methods. We use QMC to compute with high accuracy the temperature dependence of the magnetic specific heat and susceptibility of the Shastry-Sutherland model for large systems up to a coupling ratio of 0.526(1) and down to zero temperature. For larger coupling ratios, our QMC results assist us in benchmarking the evolution of the thermodynamic properties by systematic comparison with exact diagonalization calculations and interpolated high-temperature series expansions.

Emergent Bound States and Impurity Pairs in Chemically Doped Shastry-Sutherland System

The search for novel unconventional superconductors is a central topic of modern condensed matter physics. Similar to other Mott insulators, Shastry-Sutherland (SSL) systems are predicted to become superconducting when chemically doped. This makes SrCu2(BO3)2, an experimental realization of SSL model, a suitable candidate and understanding of the doping effects in it very important. Here we report doping-induced emergent states in Mg-doped SrCu2(BO3)2, which remain stable up to high magnetic fields. Using four complementary magnetometry techniques and theoretical simulations, a rich impurity-induced phenomenology at high fields is discovered. The results demonstrate a rare example in which even a small doping concentration interacts strongly with both triplets and bound states of triplets, and thus plays a significant role in the magnetization process even at high magnetic fields. Moreover, our findings of the emergence of the very stable impurity pairs provide insights into the anticipated unconventional superconductivity in SrCu2(BO3)2 and related materials.

Thermal Critical Points and Quantum Critical End Point in the Frustrated Bilayer Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

We consider the finite-temperature phase diagram of the $S = 1/2$ frustrated Heisenberg bilayer. Although this two-dimensional system may show magnetic order only at zero temperature, we demonstrate the presence of a line of finite-temperature critical points related to the line of first-order transitions between the dimer-singlet and -triplet regimes. We show by high-precision quantum Monte Carlo simulations, which are sign-free in the fully frustrated limit, that this critical point is in the Ising universality class. At zero temperature, the continuous transition between the ordered bilayer and the dimer-singlet state terminates on the first-order line, giving a quantum critical end point, and we use tensor-network calculations to follow the first-order discontinuities in its vicinity.

A ground state study of the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice using tensor networks

Making use of infinite projected entangled pair states, we investigate the ground state phase diagram of the nearest-neighbor spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice. In agreement with previous studies, we find the ferromagnetic, 120 degree magnetically ordered, ferroquadrupolar and antiferroquadrupolar phases, and confirm that all corresponding phase transitions are first order. Moreover, we provide an accurate estimate of the location of the ferroquadrupolar to 120 degree magnetically ordered phase transition, thereby fully establishing the phase diagram. Also, we do not encounter any signs of the existence of a quantum paramagnetic phase. In particular, contrary to the equivalent square lattice model, we demonstrate that on the triangular lattice the one-dimensional Haldane phase does not reach all the way up to the two-dimensional limit. Finally, we investigate the possibility of an intermediate partially-magnetic partially-quadrupolar phase close to $θ= π/2$, and we show that, also contrary to the square lattice case, this phase is not present on the triangular lattice.

Finite correlation length scaling with infinite projected entangled-pair states

We show how to accurately study 2D quantum critical phenomena using infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPEPS). We identify the presence of a finite correlation length in the optimal iPEPS approximation to Lorentz-invariant critical states which we use to perform a finite correlation-length scaling (FCLS) analysis to determine critical exponents. This is analogous to the one-dimensional (1D) finite entanglement scaling with infinite matrix product states. We provide arguments why this approach is also valid in 2D by identifying a class of states that despite obeying the area law of entanglement seems hard to describe with iPEPS. We apply these ideas to interacting spinless fermions on a honeycomb lattice and obtain critical exponents which are in agreement with Quantum Monte Carlo results. Furthermore, we introduce a new scheme to locate the critical point without the need of computing higher order moments of the order parameter. Finally, we also show how to obtain an improved estimate of the order parameter in gapless systems, with the 2D Heisenberg model as an example.

Stripe order in the underdoped region of the two-dimensional Hubbard model

Competing inhomogeneous orders are a central feature of correlated electron materials including the high-temperature superconductors. The two- dimensional Hubbard model serves as the canonical microscopic physical model for such systems. Multiple orders have been proposed in the underdoped part of the phase diagram, which corresponds to a regime of maximum numerical difficulty. By combining the latest numerical methods in exhaustive simulations, we uncover the ordering in the underdoped ground state. We find a stripe order that has a highly compressible wavelength on an energy scale of a few Kelvin, with wavelength fluctuations coupled to pairing order. The favored filled stripe order is different from that seen in real materials. Our results demonstrate the power of modern numerical methods to solve microscopic models even in challenging settings.

A tensor network study of the complete ground state phase diagram of the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the square lattice

Using infinite projected entangled pair states, we study the ground state phase diagram of the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the square lattice directly in the thermodynamic limit. We find an unexpected partially nematic partially magnetic phase in between the antiferroquadrupolar and ferromagnetic regions. Furthermore, we describe all observed phases and discuss the nature of the phase transitions involved.

Emergent Haldane phase in the $S=1$ bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the square lattice

Infinite projected entangled pair states simulations of the $S=1$ bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the square lattice reveal an emergent Haldane phase in between the previously predicted antiferromagnetic and 3-sublattice 120$^\circ$ magnetically ordered phases. This intermediate phase preserves SU(2) spin and translational symmetry but breaks lattice rotational symmetry, and it can be adiabatically connected to the Haldane phase of decoupled $S=1$ chains. Our results contradict previous studies which found a direct transition between the two magnetically ordered states.

Infinite Matrix Product States vs Infinite Projected Entangled-Pair States on the Cylinder: a comparative study

In spite of their intrinsic one-dimensional nature matrix product states have been systematically used to obtain remarkably accurate results for two-dimensional systems. Motivated by basic entropic arguments favoring projected entangled-pair states as the method of choice, we assess the relative performance of infinite matrix product states and infinite projected entangled-pair states on cylindrical geometries. By considering the Heisenberg and half-filled Hubbard models on the square lattice as our benchmark cases, we evaluate their variational energies as a function of both bond dimension as well as cylinder width. In both examples we find crossovers at moderate cylinder widths, i.e. for the largest bond dimensions considered we find an improvement on the variational energies for the Heisenberg model by using projected entangled-pair states at a width of about 11 sites, whereas for the half-filled Hubbard model this crossover occurs at about 7 sites.

Variational optimization with infinite projected entangled-pair states

We present a scheme to perform an iterative variational optimization with infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPEPS), a tensor network ansatz for a two-dimensional wave function in the thermodynamic limit, to compute the ground state of a local Hamiltonian. The method is based on a systematic summation of Hamiltonian contributions using the corner transfer-matrix method. Benchmark results for challenging problems are presented, including the 2D Heisenberg model, the Shastry-Sutherland model, and the t-J model, which show that the variational scheme yields considerably more accurate results than the previously best imaginary time evolution algorithm, with a similar computational cost and with a faster convergence towards the ground state.

Gradient methods for variational optimization of projected entangled-pair states

We present a conjugate-gradient method for the ground-state optimization of projected entangled-pair states (PEPS) in the thermodynamic limit, as a direct implementation of the variational principle within the PEPS manifold. Our optimization is based on an efficient and accurate evaluation of the gradient of the global energy functional by using effective corner environments, and is robust with respect to the initial starting points. It has the additional advantage that physical and virtual symmetries can be straightforwardly implemented. We provide the tools to compute static structure factors directly in momentum space, as well as the variance of the Hamiltonian. We benchmark our method on Ising and Heisenberg models, and show a significant improvement on the energies and order parameters as compared to algorithms based on imaginary-time evolution.

Improved energy extrapolation with infinite projected entangled-pair states applied to the 2D Hubbard model

An infinite projected entangled-pair state (iPEPS) is a variational tensor network ansatz for 2D wave functions in the thermodynamic limit where the accuracy can be systematically controlled by the bond dimension $D$. We show that for the doped Hubbard model in the strongly correlated regime ($U/t=8$, $n=0.875$) iPEPS yields lower variational energies than state-of-the-art variational methods in the large 2D limit, which demonstrates the competitiveness of the method. In order to obtain an accurate estimate of the energy in the exact infinite $D$ limit we introduce and test an extrapolation technique based on a truncation error computed in the iPEPS imaginary time evolution algorithm. The extrapolated energies are compared with accurate quantum Monte Carlo results at half filling and with various other methods in the doped, strongly correlated regime.

SU(6) Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice: competition between plaquette and chiral order

We revisit the SU(6) Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice, which has been predicted to be a chiral spin liquid by mean-field theory [G. Szirmai et al., Phys. Rev. A 84, 011611 (2011)]. Using exact diagonalizations of finite clusters, infinite projected entangled pair states simulations, and variational Monte Carlo simulations based on Gutzwiller projected wave functions, we provide strong evidence in favour of the competing plaquette state, which was reported to be higher but close by in energy according to mean-field theory. This is further confirmed by the investigation of the model with a ring exchange term, which shows that there is a transition between the plaquette state and the chiral state at a finite value of the ring exchange term.

The iPEPS algorithm, improved: fast full update and gauge fixing

The infinite Projected Entangled Pair States (iPEPS) algorithm [J. Jordan et al, PRL 101, 250602 (2008)] has become a useful tool in the calculation of ground state properties of 2d quantum lattice systems in the thermodynamic limit. Despite its many successful implementations, the method has some limitations in its present formulation which hinder its application to some highly-entangled systems. The purpose of this paper is to unravel some of these issues, in turn enhancing the stability and efficiency of iPEPS methods. For this, we first introduce the fast full update scheme, where effective environment and iPEPS tensors are both simultaneously updated (or evolved) throughout time. As we shall show, this implies two crucial advantages: (i) dramatic computational savings, and (ii) improved overall stability. Besides, we extend the application of the \emph{local gauge fixing}, successfully implemented for finite-size PEPS [M. Lubasch, J. Ignacio Cirac, M.-C. Bañuls, PRB 90, 064425 (2014)], to the iPEPS algorithm. We see that the gauge fixing not only further improves the stability of the method, but also accelerates the convergence of the alternating least squares sweeping in the (either "full" or "fast full") tensor update scheme. The improvement in terms of computational cost and stability of the resulting "improved" iPEPS algorithm is benchmarked by studying the ground state properties of the quantum Heisenberg and transverse-field Ising models on an infinite square lattice.

Efficient Continuous-time Quantum Monte Carlo Method for the Ground State of Correlated Fermions

We present the ground state extension of the efficient quantum Monte Carlo algorithm for lattice fermions of arXiv:1411.0683. Based on continuous-time expansion of imaginary-time projection operator, the algorithm is free of systematic error and scales \emph{linearly} with projection time and interaction strength. Compared to the conventional quantum Monte Carlo methods for lattice fermions, this approach has greater flexibility and is easier to combine with powerful machinery such as histogram reweighting and extended ensemble simulation techniques. We discuss the implementation of the continuous-time projection in detail using the spinless $t-V$ model as an example and compare the numerical results with exact diagonalization, density-matrix-renormalization-group and infinite projected entangled-pair states calculations. Finally we use the method to study the fermionic quantum critical point of spinless fermions on a honeycomb lattice and confirm previous results concerning its critical exponents.

Probing the stability of the spin liquid phases in the Kitaev-Heisenberg model using tensor network algorithms

We study the extent of the spin liquid phases in the Kitaev-Heisenberg model using infinite Projected Entangled-Pair States tensor network ansatz wave functions directly in the thermodynamic limit. To assess the accuracy of the ansatz wave functions we perform benchmarks against exact results for the Kitaev model and find very good agreement for various observables. In the case of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model we confirm the existence of 6 different phases: Néel, stripy, ferromagnetic, zigzag and two spin liquid phases. We find finite extents for both spin liquid phases and discontinuous phase transitions connecting them to symmetry-broken phases.

Competing states in the t-J model: uniform d-wave state versus stripe state

Variational studies of the t-J model on the square lattice based on infinite projected-entangled pair states (iPEPS) confirm an extremely close competition between a uniform d-wave superconducting state and different stripe states. The site-centered stripe with an in-phase d-wave order has an equal or only slightly lower energy than the stripe with anti-phase d-wave order. The optimal stripe filling is not constant but increases with J/t. A nematic anisotropy reduces the pairing amplitude and the energies of stripe phases are lowered relative to the uniform state with increasing nematicity.

Fermionic Quantum Critical Point of Spinless Fermions on a Honeycomb Lattice

Spinless fermions on a honeycomb lattice provide a minimal realization of lattice Dirac fermions. Repulsive interactions between nearest neighbors drive a quantum phase transition from a Dirac semimetal to a charge-density-wave state through a fermionic quantum critical point, where the coupling of Ising order parameter to the Dirac fermions at low energy drastically affects the quantum critical behavior. Encouraged by a recently discovery of absence of the fermion sign problem in this model, we study the fermionic quantum critical point using the continuous time quantum Monte Carlo method with worm sampling technique. We estimate the transition point $V/t= 1.356(1)$ with the critical exponents $ν=0.80(3)$ and $η=0.302(7)$. Compatible results for the transition point are also obtained with infinite projected entangled-pair states.
