A dual network approach to connect structure and flow in random networks

Flows in random networks are known to exhibit heavy-tailed statistics, giving rise to anomalous transport in a range of biological, environmental and engineered systems. Yet, how structure determines flow remains an open question. Here we derive a dual network approach that relates flow statistics and network properties. Conditional statistics in a range of networks reveal the existence of two interlaced subnetworks with distinct hydraulic behaviors. Based on this hidden structure, we derive a universal analytical approach that predicts heavy-tailed flow statistics based on network topology and disorder distribution across a range of random networks.

Pore-scale Mixing and the Evolution of Hydrodynamic Dispersion in Porous Media

We study the interplay of pore-scale mixing and network-scale advection through heterogeneous porous media, and its role for the evolution and asymptotic behavior of hydrodynamic dispersion. In a Lagrangian framework, we identify three fundamental mechanisms of pore-scale mixing that determine large scale particle motion, namely, the smoothing of intra-pore velocity contrasts, the increase of the tortuosity of particle paths, and the setting of a maximum time for particle transitions. Based on these mechanisms, we derive a theory that predicts anomalous and normal hydrodynamic dispersion based on the characteristic pore length, Eulerian velocity distribution and Péclet number.

Multifractal analysis of the pore space of real and simulated sedimentary rocks

It is well known that sedimentary rocks having same porosity can have very different pore size distribution. The pore distribution determines many characteristics of the rock among which, its transport property is often the most useful. Multifractal analysis is a powerful tool that is increasingly used to characterize the pore space. In this study we have done multifractal analysis of pore distribution on sedimentary rocks simulated using the Relaxed Bidisperse Ballistic Model (RBBDM). The RBBDM can generate a $3-D$ structure of sedimentary rocks of variable porosity by tuning the fraction $p$ of particles of two different sizes. We have also done multifractal analysis on two samples of real sedimentary rock to compare with the simulation studies. One sample, an oolitic limestone is of high porosity (40%)while the other is a reefal carbonate of low porosity around 7%. $2-D$ sections of X-ray micro-tomographs of the real rocks were stacked sequentially to reconstruct the real rock specimens. Both samples show a multifractal character, but we show that RBBDM gives a very realistic representation of a typical high porosity sedimentary rock.
