Nonlinear Stability of Rotating Hairy Black Holes

Rotating hairy black holes (RHBHs) are axisymmetric equilibrium solutions of the Einstein--Klein--Gordon equations, consisting of a spinning black hole surrounded by a toroidal distribution of complex scalar field. Despite their potential astrophysical relevance, the stability of these configurations -- naturally expected to form through superradiant growth of light bosonic fields -- remains uncertain. In this work, we investigate the stability of RHBHs by performing fully non-linear numerical evolutions of several configurations that differ in the relative mass contribution of the scalar-field torus. We find that configurations in which the scalar field mass is subdominant compared to the black hole mass remain stable throughout the evolution, at least on timescales of order $μt > 1600$, where $μ$ is the scalar field mass. These configurations might therefore be stable, with possible superradiant instabilities developing only on much longer timescales $μt \sim 10^{11}$, according to previous linear stability analyses. In contrast, when the scalar-field mass dominates, the system develops an instability on a much shorter timescale around $μt \sim \mathcal{O}(100)$, similar to the non-axisymmetric instability observed in rotating boson stars. Given the expected upper limits on scalar-field mass growth achievable through superradiance, our results suggest that rotating hairy black holes formed predominantly via this mechanism are likely to remain stable, at least up to the onset of the superradiant instability.

Fully consistent rotating black holes in the cubic Galileon theory

Configurations of rotating black holes in the cubic Galileon theory are computed by means of spectral methods. The equations are written in the 3+1 formalism and the coordinates are based on the maximal slicing condition and the spatial harmonic gauge. The black holes are described as apparent horizons in equilibrium. It enables the first fully consistent computation of rotating black holes in this theory. Several quantities are extracted from the solutions. In particular, the vanishing of the mass is confirmed. A link is made between that and the fact that the solutions do not obey the zeroth-law of black hole thermodynamics.

High precision numerical sequences of rotating hairy black holes

We analyze numerically the existence of regular stationary rotating hairy black holes within the framework of general relativity, which are the result of solving the Einstein-Klein-Gordon system for a complex-valued scalar field under suitable boundary (regularity and asymptotically flat) conditions. To that aim we solve the corresponding system of elliptic partial differential equations using spectral methods which are specially suited for such a numerical task. In order to obtain such system of equations we employ a parametrization for the metric that corresponds to quasi-isotropic coordinates (QIC) that have been used in the past for analyzing different kinds of stationary rotating relativistic systems. Our findings are in agreement with those reported originally by Herdeiro \& Radu ite{Herdeiro2014,Herdeiro2015}. The method is submitted to several analytic and numerical tests, which include the recovery of the Kerr solution in QIC and the cloud solutions in the Kerr background. We report different global quantities that allow us to determine the contribution of the boson hair to the spacetime, as well as relevant quantities at the horizon, like the surface gravity. The latter indicates to what extent the hairy solutions approach the extremal limit, noting that for this kind of solutions the ratio of the angular momentum per squared mass $J_\infty/M^2_{\rm ADM}$ can be larger than unity due to the contribution of the scalar hair, a situation which differs from the Kerr metric where this parameter is bounded according to $0\leq |J/M^2| \leq 1$ with the upper bound corresponding to the extremal case.

Boundary conditions for stationary black holes ; Application to Kerr, Martinez-Troncoso-Zanelli and hairy black holes

This work proposes a set of equations that can be used to numerically compute spacetimes containing a stationary black hole. The formalism is based on the 3+1 decomposition of General Relativity with maximal slicing and spatial harmonic gauge. The presence of the black hole is enforced using the notion of apparent horizon in equilibrium. This setting leads to the main result of this paper: a set of boundary conditions describing the horizon and that must be used when solving the 3+1 equations. Those conditions lead to a choice of coordinates that is regular even on the horizon itself. The whole procedure is validated with three different examples chosen to illustrate the great versatility of the method. First, the single rotating black holes are recovered up to very high values of the Kerr parameter. Second, non-rotating black holes coupled to a real scalar field, in the presence of a negative cosmological constant (the so-called MTZ black holes), are obtained. Last, black holes with complex scalar hairs are computed. Eventually, prospects for future work, in particular in contexts where stationarity is only approximate, are discussed.

A new public code for initial data of unequal-mass, spinning compact-object binaries

The construction of constraint-satisfying initial data is an essential element for the numerical exploration of the dynamics of compact-object binaries. While several codes have been developed over the years to compute generic quasi-equilibrium configurations of binaries comprising either two black holes, or two neutron stars, or a black hole and a neutron star, these codes are often not publicly available or they provide only a limited capability in terms of mass ratios and spins of the components in the binary. We here present a new open-source collection of spectral elliptic solvers that are capable of exploring the major parameter space of binary black holes (BBHs), binary neutron stars (BNSs), and mixed binaries of black holes and neutron stars (BHNSs). Particularly important is the ability of the spectral-solver library to handle neutron stars that are either irrotational or with an intrinsic spin angular momentum that is parallel to the orbital one. By supporting both analytic and tabulated equations of state at zero or finite temperature, the new infrastructure is particularly geared towards allowing for the construction of BHNS and BNS binaries. For the latter, we show that the new solvers are able to reach the most extreme corners in the physically plausible space of parameters, including extreme mass ratios and spin asymmetries, thus representing the most extreme BNS computed to date. Through a systematic series of examples, we demonstrate that the solvers are able to construct quasi-equilibrium and eccentricity-reduced initial data for BBHs, BNSs, and BHNSs, achieving spectral convergence in all cases. Furthermore, using such initial data, we have carried out evolutions of these systems from the inspiral to after the merger, obtaining evolutions with eccentricities $\lesssim 10^{-4}-10^{-3}$, and accurate gravitational waveforms.

Hairy rotating black holes in cubic Galileon theory

Numerical solutions for asymptotically flat rotating black holes in the cubic Galileon theory are presented. These black holes are endowed with a nontrivial scalar field and exhibit a non-Schwarzschild behaviour: faster than $1/r$ convergence to Minkowski spacetime at spatial infinity and hence vanishing of the Komar mass. The metrics are compared with the Kerr metric for various couplings and angular velocities. Their physical properties are extracted and show significant deviations from the Kerr case.

Horizon Surface Gravity in Corotating Black Hole Binaries

For binary systems of corotating black holes, the zeroth law of black hole mechanics states that the surface gravity is constant over each component of the horizon. Using the approximation of a conformally flat spatial metric, we compute sequences of quasi-equilibrium initial data for corotating black hole binaries with irreducible mass ratios in the range 10:1-1:1. For orbits outside the innermost stable one, the surface gravity is found to be constant on each component of the apparent horizon at the sub-percent level. We compare those numerical results to the analytical predictions from post-Newtonian theory at the fourth (4PN) order and from black hole perturbation theory to linear order in the mass ratio. We find a remarkably good agreement for all mass ratios considered, even in the strong-field regime. In particular, our findings confirm that the domain of validity of black hole perturbative calculations appears to extend well beyond the extreme mass-ratio limit.

Gravitational geons in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes

We report on numerical constructions of fully non-linear geons in asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes in four dimensions. Our approach is based on 3+1 formalism and spectral methods in a gauge combining maximal slicing and spatial harmonic coordinates. We are able to construct several families of geons seeded by different families of spherical harmonics. We can reach unprecedentedly high amplitudes, with mass of order $\sim 1/2$ of the AdS length, and with deviations of the order of 50\% compared to third order perturbative approaches. The consistency of our results with numerical resolution is carefully checked and we give extensive precision monitoring techniques. All global quantities like mass and angular momentum are computed using two independent frameworks that agree each other at the $0.1\%$ level. We also provide strong evidence for the existence of excited (i.e. with one radial node) geon solutions of Einstein equations in asymptotically AdS spacetimes by constructing them numerically.

Light rings and light points of boson stars

This work is devoted to the study of photon trajectories around rotating boson stars. The basic properties of boson star models are given with a particular emphasis on the high compactness those objects can have. Using an effective potential method, circular orbits of photons around rotating boson stars are then obtained, at least for relativistic enough configurations. A particular class of light rings, in which the photons are at rest on a stable orbit, is exhibited. By this one means that the associated worldline is collinear to the Killing vector corresponding to the asymptotic time translation symmetry. It is proposed to call those orbits light points. Their existence is very specific to boson stars and the link between light points and ergoregions is investigated.

Self-gravitating scalar breathers with negative cosmological constant

Breather-type (time-periodic and spatially localized) solutions with spherical symmetry are investigated in a massless scalar field theory coupled to Einstein's gravity with cosmological constant in $d$ spatial dimensions imposing anti de Sitter (AdS) asymptotics on space-time. Using a code constructed with the Kadath library that enables the use of spectral methods, the phase space of breather solutions is explored in detail for $d=3$ and $d=4$. It is found that there are discrete families of solutions indexed by an integer and by their frequency. Using a time evolution code these AdS breathers are found to be stable for up to a critical central density, in analogy to boson stars. Using an analytical perturbative expansion small amplitude breathers are worked out for arbitrary dimensions $d$.

Scalar field breathers on anti-de Sitter background

We study spatially localized, time-periodic solutions (breathers) of scalar field theories with various self-interacting potentials on Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes in $D$ dimensions. A detailed numerical study of spherically symmetric configurations in $D=3$ dimensions is carried out, revealing a rich and complex structure of the phase-space (bifurcations, resonances). Scalar breather solutions form one-parameter families parametrized by their amplitude, $\varepsilon$, while their frequency, $ω=ω(\varepsilon)$, is a function of the amplitude. The scalar breathers on AdS we find have a small amplitude limit, tending to the eigenfunctions of the linear Klein-Gordon operator on AdS. Importantly most of these breathers appear to be generically stable under time evolution.

Oscillons and Quasi-breathers in the ϕ^4 Klein-Gordon model

Strong numerical evidence is presented for the existence of a continuous family of time-periodic solutions with ``weak'' spatial localization of the spherically symmetric non-linear Klein-Gordon equation in 3+1 dimensions. These solutions are ``weakly'' localized in space in that they have slowly decaying oscillatory tails and can be interpreted as localized standing waves (quasi-breathers). By a detailed analysis of long-lived metastable states (oscillons) formed during the time evolution it is demonstrated that the oscillon states can be quantitatively described by the weakly localized quasi-breathers.It is found that the quasi-breathers and their oscillon counterparts exist for a whole continuum of frequencies.

Mergers of Irrotational Neutron Star Binaries in Conformally Flat Gravity

We present the first results from our new general relativistic, Lagrangian hydrodynamics code, which treats gravity in the conformally flat (CF) limit. The evolution of fluid configurations is described using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), and the elliptic field equations of the CF formalism are solved using spectral methodsin spherical coordinates. The code was tested on models for which the CF limit is exact, finding good agreement with the classical Oppenheimer-Volkov solution for a relativistic static spherical star as well as the exact semi-analytic solution for a collapsing spherical dust cloud. By computing the evolution of quasi-equilibrium neutron star binary configurations in the absence of gravitational radiation backreaction, we have confirmed that these configurations can remain dynamically stable all the way to the development of a cusp. With an approximate treatment of radiation reaction, we have calculated the complete merger of an irrotational binary configuration from the innermost point on an equilibrium sequence through merger and remnant formation and ringdown, finding good agreement withprevious relativistic calculations. In particular, we find that mass loss is highly suppressed by relativistic effects, but that, for a reasonably stiff neutron star equation of state, the remnant is initially stable against gravitational collapse because of its strong differential rotation. The gravity wave signal derived from our numerical calculation has an energy spectrum which matches extremely well with estimates based solely on quasi-equilibrium results, deviating from the Newtonian power-law form at frequencies below 1 kHz, i.e., within the reach of advanced interferometric detectors.

Relativistic Calculations of Coalescing Binary Neutron Stars

We have designed and tested a new relativistic Lagrangian hydrodynamics code, which treats gravity in the conformally flat approximation to general relativity. We have tested the resulting code extensively, finding that it performs well for calculations of equilibrium single-star models, collapsing relativistic dust clouds, and quasi-circular orbits of equilibrium solutions. By adding in a radiation reaction treatment, we compute the full evolution of a coalescing binary neutron star system. We find that the amount of mass ejected from the system, much less than a percent, is greatly reduced by the inclusion of relativistic gravitation. The gravity wave energy spectrum shows a clear divergence away from the Newtonian point-mass form, consistent with the form derived from relativistic quasi-equilibrium fluid sequences.

Binary black holes in circular orbits. II. Numerical methods and first results

We present the first results from a new method for computing spacetimes representing corotating binary black holes in circular orbits. The method is based on the assumption of exact equilibrium. It uses the standard 3+1 decomposition of Einstein equations and conformal flatness approximation for the 3-metric. Contrary to previous numerical approaches to this problem, we do not solve only the constraint equations but rather a set of five equations for the lapse function, the conformal factor and the shift vector. The orbital velocity is unambiguously determined by imposing that, at infinity, the metric behaves like the Schwarzschild one, a requirement which is equivalent to the virial theorem. The numerical scheme has been implemented using multi-domain spectral methods and passed numerous tests. A sequence of corotating black holes of equal mass is calculated. Defining the sequence by requiring that the ADM mass decrease is equal to the angular momentum decrease multiplied by the orbital angular velocity, it is found that the area of the apparent horizons is constant along the sequence. We also find a turning point in the ADM mass and angular momentum curves, which may be interpreted as an innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO). The values of the global quantities at the ISCO, especially the orbital velocity, are in much better agreement with those from third post-Newtonian calculations than with those resulting from previous numerical approaches.
