Sampling the flow of a bandlimited function

We analyze the problem of reconstruction of a bandlimited function $f$ from the space-time samples of its states $f_t=ϕ_t\ast f$ resulting from the convolution with a kernel $ϕ_t$. It is well-known that, in natural phenomena, uniform space-time samples of $f$ are not sufficient to reconstruct $f$ in a stable way. To enable stable reconstruction, a space-time sampling with periodic nonuniformly spaced samples must be used as was shown by Lu and Vetterli. We show that the stability of reconstruction, as measured by a condition number, controls the maximal gap between the spacial samples. We provide a quantitative statement of this result. In addition, instead of irregular space-time samples, we show that uniform dynamical samples at sub-Nyquist spatial rate allow one to stably reconstruct the function $\widehat f$ away from certain, explicitly described blind spots. We also consider several classes of finite dimensional subsets of bandlimited functions in which the stable reconstruction is possible, even inside the blind spots. We obtain quantitative estimates for it using Remez-Turán type inequalities. En route, we obtain a Remez-Turán inequality for prolate spheroidal wave functions. To illustrate our results, we present some numerics and explicit estimates for the heat flow problem.

Spectral estimates for finite combinations of Hermite functions and null-controllability of hypoelliptic quadratic equations

Some recent works have shown that the heat equation posed on the whole Euclidean space is null-controllable in any positive time if and only if the control subset is a thick set. This necessary and sufficient condition for null-controllability is linked to some uncertainty principles as the Logvinenko-Sereda theorem which give limitations on the simultaneous concentration of a function and its Fourier transform. In the present work, we prove new uncertainty principles for finite combinations of Hermite functions and establish an analogue of the Logvinenko-Sereda theorem with an explicit control of the constant with respect to the energy level of the Hermite functions as eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator for thick control subsets. This spectral inequality allows to derive the null-controllability in any positive time from thick control regions for parabolic equations associated with a general class of hypoelliptic non-selfadjoint quadratic differential operators. More generally, the spectral inequality for finite combinations of Hermite functions is actually shown to hold for any measurable control subset of positive Lebesgue measure, and some quantitative estimates of the constant with respect to the energy level are given for two other classes of control subsets including the case of non-empty open control subsets.

Phase retrieval for wide-band signals

This study investigates the phase retrieval problem for wide-band signals. We solve the following problem: given f $\in$ L 2 (R) with Fourier transform in L 2 (R, e^{2c|x|} dx), we find all functions g $\in$ L 2 (R) with Fourier transform in L 2 (R, e^{2c|x| dx}), such that |f (x)| = |g(x)| for all x $\in$ R. To do so, we first translate the problem to functions in the Hardy spaces on the disc via a conformal bijection, and take advantage of the inner-outer factorization. We also consider the same problem with additional constraints involving some transforms of f and g, and determine if these constraints force uniqueness of the solution.

The Nyquist sampling rate for spiraling curves

We consider the problem of reconstructing a compactly supported function from samples of its Fourier transform taken along a spiral. We determine the Nyquist sampling rate in terms of the density of the spiral and show that below this rate spirals suffer from an approximate form of aliasing. This sets a limit to the amount of undersampling that compressible signals admit when sampled along spirals. More precisely, we derive a lower bound on the condition number for the reconstruction of functions of bounded variation, and for functions that are sparse in the Haar wavelet basis.

Concentration estimates for finite expansions of spherical harmonics on two-point homogeneous spaces via the large sieve principle

We study the concentration problem on compact two-point homogeneous spaces of finite expansions of eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator using large sieve methods. We derive upper bounds for concentration in terms of the maximum Nyquist density. Our proof uses estimates of the spherical harmonics basis coefficients of certain zonal filters and an ordering result for Jacobi polynomials for arguments close to one.

On unique continuation for solutions of the Schr{ö}dinger equation on trees

We prove that if a solution of the time-dependent Schr{ö}dinger equation on an homogeneous tree with bounded potential decays fast at two distinct times then the solution is trivial. For the free Schr{ö}dinger operator, we use the spectral theory of the Laplacian and complex analysis and obtain a characterization of the initial conditions that lead to a sharp decay at any time. We then use the recent spectral decomposition of the Schr{ö}dinger operator with compactly supported potential due to Colin de Verdi{è}rre and Turc to extend our results in the presence of such potentials. Finally, we use real variable methods first introduced by Escauriaza, Kenig, Ponce and Vega to establish a general sharp result in the case of bounded potentials.

Almost Everywhere Convergence of Prolate Spheroidal Series

In this paper, we show that the expansions of functions from $L^p$-Paley-Wiener type spaces in terms of the prolate spheroidal wave functions converge almost everywhere for $1<p<\infty$, even in the cases when they might not converge in $L^p$-norm. We thereby consider the classical Paley-Wiener spaces $PW_c^p\subset L^p(\mathcal{R})$ of functions whose Fourier transform is supported in $[-c,c]$ and Paley-Wiener like spaces $B_{α,c}^p\subset L^p(0,\infty)$ of functions whose Hankel transform $\mathcal{H}^α$ is supported in $[0,c]$.As a side product, we show the continuity of the projection operator $P_c^αf:=\mathcal{H}^α(χ_{[0,c]}\cdot \mathcal{H}^αf)$ from $L^p(0,\infty)$ to $L^q(0,\infty)$, $1<p\leq q<\infty$.

Planar sampling sets for the short-time Fourier transform

This paper considers the problem of restricting the short-time Fourier transform to domains of nonzero measure in the plane and studies sampling bounds of such systems. In particular, we give a quantitative estimate for the lower sampling bound in the case of Hermite windows and derive a sufficient condition for a large class of windows in terms of a certain planar density. On the way, we prove a Remez-type inequality for polyanalytic functions. MSC2010: 42C40, 46E15, 46E20, 42C15

Moving and oblique observations of beams and plates

We study the observability of the one-dimensional Schr{ö}dinger equation and of the beam and plate equations by moving or oblique observations. Applying different versions and adaptations of Ingham's theorem on nonharmonic Fourier series, we obtain various observability and non-observability theorems. Several open problems are also formulated at the end of the paper.

Zeros of the Wigner Distribution and the Short-Time Fourier Transform

We study the question under which conditions the zero set of a (cross-) Wigner distribution W (f, g) or a short-time Fourier transform is empty. This is the case when both f and g are generalized Gaussians, but we will construct less obvious examples consisting of exponential functions and their convolutions. The results require elements from the theory of totally positive functions, Bessel functions, and Hurwitz polynomials. The question of zero-free Wigner distributions is also related to Hudson's theorem for the positivity of the Wigner distribution and to Hardy's uncertainty principle. We then construct a class of step functions S so that the Wigner distribution W (f, 1 (0,1)) always possesses a zero f $\in$ S $\cap$ L p for p < $\infty$, but may be zero-free for f $\in$ S $\cap$ L $\infty$. The examples show that the question of zeros of the Wigner distribution may be quite subtle and relate to several branches of analysis.

An uncertainty principle for solutions of the Schr{ö}dinger equation on H-type groups

In this paper we consider uncertainty principles for solutions of certain PDEs on H-type groups. We first prove that, contrary to the euclidean setting, the heat kernel on H-type groups is not characterized as the only solution of the heat equation that has sharp decay at 2 different times. We then prove the analogue of Hardy's Uncertainty Principle for solutions of the Schr{ö}dinger equation with potential on H-type groups. This extends the free case considered by Ben Saïd, Dogga and Thangavelu [BTD] and by Ludwig and M{ü}ller [LM].

Mean convergence of prolate spheroidal series and their extensions

The aim of this paper is to establish the range of p's for which the expansion of a function f $\in$ L p in a generalized prolate spheroidal wave function (PSWFs) basis converges to f in L p. Two generalizations of PSWFs are considered here, the circular PSWFs introduced by D. Slepian and the weighted PSWFs introduced by Wang and Zhang. Both cases cover the classical PSWFs for which the corresponding results has been previously established by Barcel{ó} and Cordoba. To establish those results, we prove a general result that allows to extend mean convergence in a given basis (e.g. Jacobi polynomials or Bessel basis) to mean convergence in a second basis (here the generalized PSWFs).

Non-Asymptotic behaviour of the spectrum of the Sinc Kernel Operator and Related Applications

Prolate spheroidal wave functions have recently attracted a lot of attention in applied harmonic analysis, signal processing and mathematical physics. They are eigenvectors of the Sinc-kernel operator Qc : the time-and band-limiting operator. The corresponding eigenvalues play a key role and it is the aim of this paper to obtain precise non-asymptotic estimates for these eigenvalues, within the three main regions of the spectrum of Qc. This issue is rarely studied in the literature, while the asymptotic behaviour of the spectrum of Qc has been well established from the sixties. As applications of our non-asymptotic estimates, we first provide estimates for the constants appearing in Remez and Tur{à}n-Nazarov type concentration inequalities. Then, we give an estimate for the hole probability, associated with a random matrix from the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE).

Quantitative estimates of sampling constants in model spaces

We establish quantitative estimates for sampling (dominating) sets in model spaces associated with meromorphic inner functions, i.e. those corresponding to de Branges spaces. Our results encompass the Logvinenko-Sereda-Panejah (LSP) Theorem including Kovrijkine's optimal sampling constants for Paley-Wiener spaces. It also extends Dyakonov's LSP theoremfor model spaces associated with bounded derivative inner functions. Considering meromorphic inner functions allows us tointroduce a new geometric density condition, in terms of which the sampling sets are completely characterized. This, incomparison to Volberg's characterization of sampling measures in terms of harmonic measure, enables us to obtain explicitestimates on the sampling constants. The methods combine Baranov-Bernstein inequalities, reverse Carleson measures andRemez inequalities .

The phase retrieval problem for solutions of the Helmholtz equation

In this paper we consider the phase retrieval problem for Herglotz functions, that is, solutions of the Helmholtz equation $Δu+λ^2u=0$ on domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq2$. In dimension $d=2$, if $u,v$ are two such solutions then $|u|=|v|$ implies that either $u=cv$ or $u=c\bar v$ for some $c\in\mathbb{C}$ with $|c|=1$. In dimension $d\geq3$, the same conclusion holds under some restriction on $u$ and $v$: either they are real valued or zonal functions or have non vanishing mean.

Lower bounds for the dyadic Hilbert transform

In this paper, we seek lower bounds of the dyadic Hilbert transform (Haar shift) of the form $\left\Vert S f\right\Vert_{L^2(K)}\geq C(I,K)\left\Vert f\right\Vert_{L^2(I)}$ where $I$ and $K$ are two dyadic intervals and $f$ supported in $I$. If $I\subset K$ such bound exist while in the other cases $K\subsetneq I$ and $K\cap I=\emptyset$ such bounds are only available under additional constraints on the derivative of $f$. In the later case, we establish a bound of the form $\left\Vert S f\right\Vert_{L^2(K)}\geq C(I,K)|\left\langle f\right\rangle_I|$ where $\left\langle f\right\rangle_I$ is the mean of $f$ over $I$. This sheds new light on the similar problem for the usual Hilbert transform that we exploit.
