Quadratic points on $X_0(163)$

We determine all the quadratic points on the genus $13$ modular curve $X_0(163)$, thus completing the answer to a recent question of Banwait, the second-named author, and Padurariu. In doing so, we investigate a curious phenomenon involving a cubic point with complex multiplication on the curve $X_0(163)$. This cubic point prevents us, due to computational restraints, from directly applying the state-of-the-art Atkin--Lehner sieve for computing quadratic points on modular curves $X_0(N)$. To overcome this issue, we introduce a technique which allows us to work with the Jacobian of curves modulo primes by directly computing linear equivalence relations between divisors.

Computing quadratic points on modular curves $X_0(N)$

In this paper we improve on existing methods to compute quadratic points on modular curves and apply them to successfully find all the quadratic points on all modular curves $X_0(N)$ of genus up to $8$, and genus up to $10$ with $N$ prime, for which they were previously unknown. The values of $N$ we consider are contained in the set \[ \mathcal{L}=\{58, 68, 74, 76, 80, 85, 97, 98, 100, 103, 107, 109, 113, 121, 127 \}.\] We obtain that all the non-cuspidal quadratic points on $X_0(N)$ for $N\in \mathcal{L}$ are CM points, except for one pair of Galois conjugate points on $X_0(103)$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2885})$. We also compute the $j$-invariants of the elliptic curves parametrised by these points, and for the CM points determine their geometric endomorphism rings.

On power values of pyramidal numbers, II

For $m \geq 3$, we define the $m$th order pyramidal number by \[ \mathrm{Pyr}_m(x) = \frac{1}{6} x(x+1)((m-2)x+5-m). \] In a previous paper, written by the first-, second-, and fourth-named authors, all solutions to the equation $\mathrm{Pyr}_m(x) = y^2$ are found in positive integers $x$ and $y$, for $6 \leq m \leq 100$. In this paper, we consider the question of higher powers, and find all solutions to the equation $\mathrm{Pyr}_m(x) = y^n$ in positive integers $x$, $y$, and $n$, with $n \geq 3$, and $5 \leq m \leq 50$. We reduce the problem to a study of systems of binomial Thue equations, and use a combination of local arguments, the modular method via Frey curves, and bounds arising from linear forms in logarithms to solve the problem.

Mazur's isogeny theorem

Mazur's isogeny theorem states that if $p$ is a prime for which there exists an elliptic curve $E / \mathbb{Q}$ that admits a rational isogeny of degree $p$, then $p \in \{2,3,5,7,11,13,17,19,37,43,67,163 \}$. This result is one of the cornerstones of the theory of elliptic curves and plays a crucial role in the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. In this expository paper, we overview Mazur's proof of this theorem, in which modular curves and Galois representations feature prominently.

Fermat's Last Theorem and modular curves over real quadratic fields

In this paper we study the Fermat equation $x^n+y^n=z^n$ over quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ for squarefree $d$ with $26 \leq d \leq 97$. By studying quadratic points on the modular curves $X_0(N)$, $d$-regular primes, and working with Hecke operators on spaces of Hilbert newforms, we extend work of Freitas and Siksek to show that for most squarefree $d$ in this range there are no non-trivial solutions to this equation for $n \geq 4$.

$\mathbb{Q}$-curves and the Lebesgue-Nagell equation

In this paper, we consider the equation \[ x^2 - q^{2k+1} = y^n, \qquad q \nmid x, \quad 2 \mid y, \] for integers $x,q,k,y$ and $n$, with $k \geq 0$ and $n \geq 3$. We extend work of the first and third-named authors by finding all solutions in the cases $q= 41$ and $q = 97$. We do this by constructing a Frey-Hellegouarch $\mathbb{Q}$-curve defined over the real quadratic field $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{q})$, and using the modular method with multi-Frey techniques.

On elliptic curves with $p$-isogenies over quadratic fields

Let $K$ be a number field. For which primes $p$ does there exist an elliptic curve $E / K$ admitting a $K$-rational $p$-isogeny? Although we have an answer to this question over the rationals, extending this to other number fields is a fundamental open problem in number theory. In this paper, we study this question in the case that $K$ is a quadratic field, subject to the assumption that $E$ is semistable at the primes of $K$ above $p$. We prove results both for families of quadratic fields and for specific quadratic fields.

On some Generalized Fermat Equations of the form $x^2+y^{2n} = z^p$

The primary aim of this paper is to study the generalized Fermat equation \[ x^2+y^{2n} = z^{3p} \] in coprime integers $x$, $y$, and $z$, where $n \geq 2$ and $p$ is a fixed prime. Using modularity results over totally real fields and the explicit computation of Hilbert cuspidal eigenforms, we provide a complete resolution of this equation in the case $p=7$, and obtain an asymptotic result for fixed $p$. Additionally, using similar techniques, we solve a second equation, namely $x^{2\ell}+y^{2m} = z^{17}$, for primes $\ell,m \ne 5$.
