Inflatable devices for planetary aerocapture and aerobraking manoeuvres

Future missions to Mars and Venus will make use of aerobraking and aerocapture in order to gain mass through the saving of fuel at planetary arrival. So far only aerobraking has been demonstrated, if the Mars Premier project has paved the way for aerocapture, no demonstration was performed due to the project interruption. The use of these techniques induces additional constraints for planetary probes, since additional heating and mechanical loads have to be carefully managed. Moreover, aerocapture requires a high level of accuracy for the Guidance Navigation and Control aspects, since a pass at an altitude of the atmosphere with a different density could lead to the vehicle destruction. This document surveys the existing state-of-the-art on inflatable devices (including ballutes, sails, or inflatable heat-shield capsule) for orbital manoeuvres at planetary arrival.

Modelisation d ecoulements complexes pour des applications aerospatiales

This document reports (in French) some achievements performed in the frame of computational fluid dynamics applied to aerospace applications. Different physical issues have been tacled out during several studies focusing on turbulent jets, single phase approach of cryogenic sprays for rocket engines, flows around complex geometries, and hypersonic entry. For each of the different application studied a chapter detailed the related issues and the approach developed. At the end an appraisal for the different topic investigated is done, and potential directions for future activities proposed. This document gives also the state-of-the-art for different aerospace applications in the mid- 2000.

Survey of CO$_2$ radiation experimental data

This paper focuses on a survey of experimental data related to radiation into CO$_2$ plasma flows, which are encountered during Mars and Venus entries. The review emphasizes on VUV and IR radiation, since recent experimental efforts has been devoted to these wavelength ranges. The main objective of the study is to identify the most attractive datasets for future cross-check comparisons with the results obtained during future test campaigns with ESTHER shock-tube. The survey accounts for the results obtained in shock-tubes, expansion tube and plasma arc-jets for Mars and Venus test campaigns. The experimental results obtained for propulsion related studies have also been considered.

Survey of Vacuum UltraViolet experimental data in relation to radiation characterization for Earth high-speed re-entry

This contribution is a survey of the available experimental radiation data measured in the VUV range related to hypersonic atmospheric entry. The objective is to identify the experimental datasets already gathered during aerothermodynamics studies for preparing sample return missions, and future. The final goal is to identify the most valuable VUV datasets for comparisons with future measurements to be performed in the European shock-tube ESTHER. Due to the limited number of studies covering VUV radiation in relation to space exploration missions, and manned Moon exploration, the review has been extended to domains such as nuclear fusion, exobiology, chemical and process engineering.

On coherent structures in the compressible turbulent round jet

The presence of two-dimensional coherent structures in the near-field of the round jet has been established by several experimental investigations and direct Navier-Stokes simulations (DNS). Their study has a great importance to improve the prediction of unsteady flows dominated by large scale structures. Indeed, coherent structures play a determinant role on turbulence and flow evolution. The goal of this numerical study is to apply the semi-deterministic modelling, a method close to the large eddy simulation (LES), to the simulation of compressible round jets. This allows the simulation of natural unsteadiness without any flow excitation. A free jet configuration is computed for three Mach numbers of 0.3, 0.96 and 1.5 to evaluate the influence of compressibility effects on instability, Strouhal number and expansion rate. There is not quantitative comparisons on flow quantities with experimental data, except for the Strouhal number, due to the discrepancies between the configuration computed here and those experimentally investigated in past studies. The numerical results on coherent structures are validated across a comparison on the Strouhal number of the preferred mode. The results on the evolution of the Strouhal number with the Mach number are in excellent agreement with previous experiments. Moreover, the evolution of the large scale vortices in the flow is well correlated by experimental and DNS results obtained on other configurations.

Influence of initial conditions on coherent structures in a round jet

Coherent structures play an important role in the near-field of shear flows such as round jets. In the following the near-field of a round jet is numerically investigated , this for different initial conditions. Two configurations are considered one with a fully developed turbulence at the inlet, the other with an under developed turbulence. Calculations are carried out with a k-epsilon turbulence model but different sets of values for the constants inducing different level of diffusion within the flow. Finally, the results show that the presence of coherent structures in the near-field depends strongly on the turbulence level at the inlet. For a fully developed turbulence these structures are missing or very weak which is not the case for an under developed turbulence.
