Logarithmic conformal invariance in the Abelian sandpile model

We review the status of the two-dimensional Abelian sandpile model as a strong candidate to provide a lattice realization of logarithmic conformal invariance with central charge c=-2. Evidence supporting this view is collected from various aspects of the model. These include the study of some conformally invariant boundary conditions, and the corresponding boundary condition changing fields, the calculation of correlations of certain bulk and boundary observables (the height variables) as well as a proper account of the necessary dissipation, which allows for a physical understanding of some of the strange but generic features of logarithmic theories.

Refined conformal spectra in the dimer model

Working with Lieb's transfer matrix for the dimer model, we point out that the full set of dimer configurations may be partitioned into disjoint subsets (sectors) closed under the action of the transfer matrix. These sectors are labelled by an integer or half-integer quantum number we call the variation index. In the continuum scaling limit, each sector gives rise to a representation of the Virasoro algebra. We determine the corresponding conformal partition functions and their finitizations, and observe an intriguing link to the Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz sectors of the critical dense polymer model as described by a conformal field theory with central charge c=-2.

Finite-size corrections for logarithmic representations in critical dense polymers

We study (analytic) finite-size corrections in the dense polymer model on the strip by perturbing the critical Hamiltonian with irrelevant operators belonging to the tower of the identity. We generalize the perturbation expansion to include Jordan cells, and examine whether the finite-size corrections are sensitive to the properties of indecomposable representations appearing in the conformal spectrum, in particular their indecomposability parameters. We find, at first order, that the corrections do not depend on these parameters nor even on the presence of Jordan cells. Though the corrections themselves are not universal, the ratios are universal and correctly reproduced by the conformal perturbative approach, to first order.

Grothendieck ring and Verlinde-like formula for the W-extended logarithmic minimal model WLM(1,p)

We consider the Grothendieck ring of the fusion algebra of the W-extended logarithmic minimal model WLM(1,p). Informally, this is the fusion ring of W-irreducible characters so it is blind to the Jordan block structures associated with reducible yet indecomposable representations. As in the rational models, the Grothendieck ring is described by a simple graph fusion algebra. The 2p-dimensional matrices of the regular representation are mutually commuting but not diagonalizable. They are brought simultaneously to Jordan form by the modular data coming from the full (3p-1)-dimensional S-matrix which includes transformations of the p-1 pseudo-characters. The spectral decomposition yields a Verlinde-like formula that is manifestly independent of the modular parameter $τ$ but is, in fact, equivalent to the Verlinde-like formula recently proposed by Gaberdiel and Runkel involving a $τ$-dependent S-matrix.

Boundary monomers in the dimer model

The correlation functions of an arbitrary number of boundary monomers in the system of close-packed dimers on the square lattice are computed exactly in the scaling limit. The equivalence of the 2n-point correlation functions with those of a complex free fermion is proved, thereby reinforcing the description of the monomer-dimer model by a conformal free field theory with central charge c=1.

Integrable Boundary Conditions and W-Extended Fusion in the Logarithmic Minimal Models LM(1,p)

We consider the logarithmic minimal models LM(1,p) as `rational' logarithmic conformal field theories with extended W symmetry. To make contact with the extended picture starting from the lattice, we identify 4p-2 boundary conditions as specific limits of integrable boundary conditions of the underlying Yang-Baxter integrable lattice models. Specifically, we identify 2p integrable boundary conditions to match the 2p known irreducible W-representations. These 2p extended representations naturally decompose into infinite sums of the irreducible Virasoro representations (r,s). A further 2p-2 reducible yet indecomposable W-representations of rank 2 are generated by fusion and these decompose as infinite sums of indecomposable rank-2 Virasoro representations. The fusion rules in the extended picture are deduced from the known fusion rules for the Virasoro representations of LM(1,p) and are found to be in agreement with previous works. The closure of the fusion algebra on a finite number of representations in the extended picture is remarkable confirmation of the consistency of the lattice approach.

Wind on the boundary for the Abelian sandpile model

We continue our investigation of the two-dimensional Abelian sandpile model in terms of a logarithmic conformal field theory with central charge c=-2, by introducing two new boundary conditions. These have two unusual features: they carry an intrinsic orientation, and, more strangely, they cannot be imposed uniformly on a whole boundary (like the edge of a cylinder). They lead to seven new boundary condition changing fields, some of them being in highest weight representations (weights -1/8, 0 and 3/8), some others belonging to indecomposable representations with rank 2 Jordan cells (lowest weights 0 and 1). Their fusion algebra appears to be in full agreement with the fusion rules conjectured by Gaberdiel and Kausch.

Non-Local Finite-Size Effects in the Dimer Model

We study the finite-size corrections of the dimer model on $\infty \times N$ square lattice with two different boundary conditions: free and periodic. We find that the finite-size corrections depend in a crucial way on the parity of $N$, and show that, because of certain non-local features present in the model, a change of parity of $N$ induces a change of boundary condition. Taking a careful account of this, these unusual finite-size behaviours can be fully explained in the framework of the $c=-2$ logarithmic conformal field theory.

Height variables in the Abelian sandpile model: scaling fields and correlations

We compute the lattice 1-site probabilities, on the upper half-plane, of the four height variables in the two-dimensional Abelian sandpile model. We find their exact scaling form when the insertion point is far from the boundary, and when the boundary is either open or closed. Comparing with the predictions of a logarithmic conformal theory with central charge c=-2, we find a full compatibility with the following field assignments: the heights 2, 3 and 4 behave like (an unusual realization of) the logarithmic partner of a primary field with scaling dimension 2, the primary field itself being associated with the height 1 variable. Finite size corrections are also computed and successfully compared with numerical simulations. Relying on these field assignments, we formulate a conjecture for the scaling form of the lattice 2-point correlations of the height variables on the plane, which remain as yet unknown. The way conformal invariance is realized in this system points to a local field theory with c=-2 which is different from the triplet theory.

Logarithmic Conformal Field Theory and Boundary Effects in the Dimer Model

We study the finite-size corrections of the dimer model on $\infty \times N$ square lattice with two different boundary conditions: free and periodic. We find that the finite-size corrections in a crucial way depend on the parity of $N$; we also show that such unusual finite-size behavior can be fully explained in the framework of the $c=-2$ logarithmic conformal field theory.

Kramers-Wannier dualities via symmetries

Kramers-Wannier dualities in lattice models are intimately connected with symmetries. We show that they can be found directly and explicitly from the symmetry transformations of the boundary states in the underlying conformal field theory. Intriguingly the only models with a self-duality transformation turn out to be those with an auto-orbifold property.

Pre-logarithmic and logarithmic fields in a sandpile model

We consider the unoriented two-dimensional Abelian sandpile model on the half-plane with open and closed boundary conditions, and relate it to the boundary logarithmic conformal field theory with central charge c=-2. Building on previous results, we first perform a complementary lattice analysis of the operator effecting the change of boundary condition between open and closed, which confirms that this operator is a weight -1/8 boundary primary field, whose fusion agrees with lattice calculations. We then consider the operators corresponding to the unit height variable and to a mass insertion at an isolated site of the upper half plane and compute their one-point functions in presence of a boundary containing the two kinds of boundary conditions. We show that the scaling limit of the mass insertion operator is a weight zero logarithmic field.

Logarithmic scaling for height variables in the Abelian sandpile model

We report on the exact computation of the scaling form of the 1-point function, on the upper-half plane, of the height 2 variable in the two-dimensional Abelian sandpile model. By comparing the open versus the closed boundary condition, we find that the scaling field associated to the height 2 is a logarithmic scalar field of scaling dimension 2, belonging to a c=-2 logarithmic conformal field theory. This identification is confirmed by numerical simulations and extended to the height 3 and 4 variables, which exhibit the same scaling form. Using the conformal setting, we make precise proposals for the bulk 2-point functions of all height variables.

Boundary height fields in the Abelian sandpile model

We study the abelian sandpile model on the upper half plane, and reconsider the correlations of the four height variables lying on the boundary. For more convenience, we carry out the analysis in the dissipative (massive) extension of the model and identify the boundary scaling fields corresponding to the four heights. We find that they all can be accounted for by the massive pertubation of a c=-2 logarithmic conformal field theory.

A c=-2 boundary changing operator for the Abelian sandpile

We consider the unoriented two-dimensional Abelian sandpile model on the half-plane with open and closed boundary conditions. We show that the operator effecting the change from closed to open, or from open to closed, is a boundary primary field of weight -1/8, belonging to a c=-2 logarithmic conformal field theory.

Non periodic Ishibashi states: the su(2) and su(3) affine theories

We consider the su(2) and su(3) affine theories on a cylinder, from the point of view of their discrete internal symmetries. To this end, we adapt the usual treatment of boundary conditions leading to the Cardy equation to take the symmetry group into account. In this context, the role of the Ishibashi states from all (non periodic) bulk sectors is emphasized. This formalism is then applied to the su(2) and su(3) models, for which we determine the action of the symmetry group on the boundary conditions, and we compute the twisted partition functions. Most if not all data relevant to the symmetry properties of a specific model are hidden in the graphs associated with its partition function, and their subgraphs. A synoptic table is provided that summarizes the many connections between the graphs and the symmetry data that are to be expected in general.

Symmetric boundary conditions in boundary critical phenomena

Conformally invariant boundary conditions for minimal models on a cylinder are classified by pairs of Lie algebras $(A,G)$ of ADE type. For each model, we consider the action of its (discrete) symmetry group on the boundary conditions. We find that the invariant ones correspond to the nodes in the product graph $A \otimes G$ that are fixed by some automorphism. We proceed to determine the charges of the fields in the various Hilbert spaces, but, in a general minimal model, many consistent solutions occur. In the unitary models $(A,A)$, we show that there is a unique solution with the property that the ground state in each sector of boundary conditions is invariant under the symmetry group. In contrast, a solution with this property does not exist in the unitary models of the series $(A,D)$ and $(A,E_6)$. A possible interpretation of this fact is that a certain (large) number of invariant boundary conditions have unphysical (negative) classical boundary Boltzmann weights. We give a tentative characterization of the problematic boundary conditions.

Automorphisms of the affine SU(3) fusion rules

We classify the automorphisms of the (chiral) level-k affine SU(3) fusion rules, for any value of k, by looking for all permutations that commute with the modular matrices S and T. This can be done by using the arithmetic of the cyclotomic extensions where the problem is naturally posed. When k is divisible by 3, the automorphism group (Z_2) is generated by the charge conjugation C. If k is not divisible by 3, the automorphism group (Z_2 x Z_2) is generated by C and the Altschüler--Lacki--Zaugg automorphism. Although the combinatorial analysis can become more involved, the techniques used here for SU(3) can be applied to other algebras.
