Novel phases in a square-lattice frustrated ferromagnet : 1/3-magnetisation plateau, helicoidal spin-liquid and vortex crystal

A large part of the interest in magnets with frustrated antiferromagnetic interactions comes from the many new phases found in applied magnetic field. In this Article, we explore some of the new phases which arise in a model with frustrated ferromagnetic interactions, the $J_1-J_2-J_3$ Heisenberg model on a square lattice. Using a combination of classical Monte-Carlo simulation and spin-wave theory, we uncover behaviour reminiscent of some widely-studied frustrated antiferromagnets, but with a number of new twists. We first demonstrate that, for a suitable choice of parameters, the phase diagram as a function of magnetic field and temperature is nearly identical to that of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice, including the celebrated 1/3-magnetisation plateau. We then examine how this phase diagram changes when the model is tuned to a point where the classical ground--state is highly degenerate. In this case, two new phases emerge; a classical, finite-temperature spin-liquid, characterised by a "ring" in the spin structure--factor $\mathcal{S}({\mathbf q})$; and a vortex crystal, a multiple-Q state with finite magnetisation, which can be viewed as an ordered lattice of magnetic vortices. All of these new phases persist for a wide range of magnetic field. We discuss the relationship between these results and published studies of frustrated antiferromagnets, together with some of the materials where these new phases might be observed in experiment.

Spin nematic order in multiple-spin exchange models on the triangular lattice

We figure out that the ground state of a multiple-spin exchange model applicable to thin films of solid 3He possesses an octahedral spin nematic order. In the presence of magnetic field, it is deformed into an antiferro-quadrupolar order in the perpendicular spin plane, in which lattice Z3 rotational symmetry is also broken. Furthermore, this system shows a narrow magnetization plateau at half, m/m_{sat}=1/2, which resembles recent magnetization measurement [H. Nema et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 075301 (2009)].

Phase diagram of the classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice in applied magnetic field

The Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a two-dimensional triangular lattice is a paradigmatic problem in frustrated magnetism. Even in the classical limit, its properties are far from simple. The "120 degree" ground state favoured by the frustrated antiferromagnetic interactions contains a hidden chiral symmetry, and supports two distinct types of excitation. And famously, three distinct phases, including a collinear one-third magnetisation plateau, are stabilised by thermal fluctuations in applied magnetic field. The questions of symmetry-breaking raised by this model are deep and subtle, and after more than thirty years of study, many of the details of its phase diagram remain surprisingly obscure. In this paper we use modern Monte Carlo simulation techniques to determine the finite-temperature phase diagram of the classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice in applied magnetic field. At low to intermediate values of magnetic field, we find evidence for a continuous phase transition from the paramagnet into the collinear one-third magnetisation plateau, belonging to the three-state Potts universality class. We also find evidence for conventional Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions from the one-third magnetisation plateau into the canted "Y-state", and into the 2:1 canted phase found at high fields. However, the phase transition from the paramagnet into the 2:1 canted phase, while continuous, does not appear to fall into any conventional universality class. We argue that this, like the chiral phase transition discussed in zero field, deserves further study as an interesting example of a finite-temperature phase transition with compound order-parameter symmetry. We comment on the relevance of these results for experiments on magnetic materials with a triangular lattice.

Low energy excitations of the kagome antiferromagnet and the spin gap issue

In this paper we report the latest results of exact diagonalizations of SU(2) invariant models on various lattices (square, triangular, hexagonal, checkerboard and kagome lattices). We focus on the low lying levels in each S sector. The differences in behavior between gapless systems and gapped ones are exhibited. The plausibility of a gapless spin liquid in the Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice is discussed. A rough estimate of the spin susceptibility in such an hypothesis is given. The evolution of the intra-S channel spectra under the effect of a small perturbation is consistent with the proximity of a quantum critical point. We emphasize that the very small intra-S channel energy scale observed in exact spectra is a very interesting information to understand the low T dynamics of this model.

Phase diagram of the spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice

We presents the results of an extensive numerical study of the phase diagram of the spin-1/2, \protect{$J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$} Heisenberg model on a square lattice, for both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions $J_1$, using exact diagonalization with periodic and twisted boundary conditions. Comparison is made with published spin wave calculations. We show that quantum fluctuations play a very important role, changing both the extent and the wave vector of classical spiral phases, and leading to new quantum phases where the classical spiral states have a high degeneracy. These include a new phase with small or vanishing spin-stiffness, in addition to known valence-bond-solid and bond-nematic phases.

Detecting spontaneous symmetry breaking in finite-size spectra of frustrated quantum antiferromagnets

Exact diagonalization is a powerful numerical technique to analyze static and dynamical quantities in quantum many-body lattice models. It provides unbiased information concerning quantum numbers, energies and wave-functions of the low-energy eigenstates for almost any kind of microscopic model. The information about energies and quantum numbers is particularly useful to detect possible spontaneous symmetry breaking at T=0. We review some of the advances in the field of frustrated quantum magnets which have been possible thanks to detailed symmetry analysis of exact diagonalizations spectra. New results concerning the kagome and star lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets are presented.

Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice and experimental data on ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2

We compute the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice with high-temperature expansions and exact diagonalizations. We compare the results with the experimental data on ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2 obtained by Helton et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 107204 (2007)]. Down to k_BT/J~0.2, our calculations reproduce accurately the experimental susceptibility, with an exchange interaction J~190K and a contribution of 3.7% of weakly interacting impurity spins. The comparison between our calculations of the specific heat and the experiments indicate that the low-temperature entropy (below ~20K) is smaller in ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2 than in the kagome Heisenberg model, a likely signature of other interactions in the system.

Octupolar order in the multiple spin exchange model on a triangular lattice

We show how a gapless spin liquid with hidden octupolar order arises in an applied magnetic field, in a model applicable to thin films of 3He with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic (cyclic) exchange interactions. Evidence is also presented for nematic -- i.e., quadrupolar -- correlations bordering on ferromagnetism in the absence of a magnetic field.

Nematic order in square lattice frustrated ferromagnets

We present a new scenario for the breakdown of ferromagnetic order in a two-dimensional quantum magnet with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. In this, dynamical effects lead to the formation of two-magnon bound states, which undergo Bose-Einstein condensation, giving rise to bond-centered nematic order. This scenario is explored in some detail for an extended Heisenberg model on a square lattice. In particular, we present numerical evidence confirming the existence of a state with d-wave nematic correlations but no long range magnetic order, lying between the saturated ferromagnetic and collinear antiferromagnetic phases of the ferromagnetic J1-J2 model. We argue by continuity of spectra that this phase is also present in a model with 4-spin cyclic exchange.

Twelve sublattice ordered phase in the J1-J2 model on the kagome lattice

Motivated by recent experiments on an S=1/2 antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice, we investigate the Heisenberg J1-J2 model with ferromagnetic J1 and antiferromagnetic J2. Classically the ground state displays Neel long range order with 12 non-coplanar sublattices. The order parameter has the symmetry of a cuboctahedron so that it fully breaks SO(3) as well as the spin-flip symmetry, and we expect from the latter a Z2 symmetry breaking pattern. As might be expected from the Mermin-Wagner theorem in two dimensions, the SO(3) symmetry is restored by thermal fluctuations while the Z2 symmetry breaking persists up to a finite temperature. A complete study of S=1/2 exact spectra reveals that the classical order subsists for quantum spins in a finite range of parameters. First order spin wave calculations give the range of existence of this phase and the renormalisations at T=0 of the order parameters associated to both symmetry breakings. This phase is destroyed by quantum fluctuations for a small but finite J2/|J1|\simeq3 consistently with exact spectra studies which indicate a gapped phase.

Spin-1/2 frustrated antiferromagnet on a spatially anisotopic square lattice: contribution of exact diagonalizations

The phase diagram of a spin-1/2 $J-J'-J_2$ model is investigated by means of exact diagonalizations on finite samples. This model is a generalization of the $J_1-J_2$ model on the square lattice with two different nearest-neighbor couplings $J,J'$ and may be also viewed as an array of coupled Heisenberg chains. The results suggest that the resonnating valence bond state predicted by Nersesyan and Tsvelik [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 67}, 024422 (2003)] for $J_2=0.5J' \ll J$ is realized and extends beyond the limit of small interchain coupling along a curve nearly coincident with the line where the energy per spin is maximum. This line is likely bordered on both side by a columnar dimer long range order. This columnar order could extends for $J'\to J$ which correspond to the $J_1-J_2$ model.

From Neel long-range order to spin-liquids in the multiple-spin exchange model

The phase diagram of the multiple-spin exchange model on the triangular lattice is studied using exact diagonalizations. The two-spin (J_2) and four-spin (J_4) exchanges have been taken into account for 12, 16, 19, 21, 24, and 27 site samples in the parameter region J_4=0 - 0.25 (for a fixed J_2=1). It is found that the three-sublattice Néel ordered state built up by the pure two-spin exchange can be destroyed by the four-spin exchange, forming a spin-liquid state. The different data suggest that the phase diagram in this range of parameters exhibits two phases. The pure J_2 phase is a three-sublattice Neel ordered phase, a small J_4 drives it into a spin-liquid state with a spin gap filled of a large number of singlets. This spin-liquid phase is not of the same generic kind as the phase studied by Misguich et al. [Phys. Rev. B 60, 1064 (1999)]. It is observed on the finite-size samples that the spin liquid phase, as the Neel ordered phase, exhibits a magnetization plateau at m = 1/3, and for J_4 >0.15 a second plateau atm=1/2. These two plateaus are associated respectively to the semi-classical orderings uud and uuud.

Magneto-thermodynamics of the spin-1/2 Kagome antiferromagnet

In this paper, we use a new hybrid method to compute the thermodynamic behavior of the spin-1/2 Kagome antiferromagnet under the influence of a large external magnetic field. We find a T^2 low-temperature behavior and a very low sensitivity of the specific heat to a strong external magnetic field. We display clear evidence that this low temperature magneto-thermal effect is associated to the existence of low-lying fluctuating singlets, but also that the whole picture (T^2 behavior of Cv and thermally activated spin susceptibility) implies contribution of both non magnetic and magnetic excitations. Comparison with experiments is made.
