An estimate for the radial chemical distance in $2d$ critical percolation clusters

We derive an estimate for the distance, measured in lattice spacings, inside two-dimensional critical percolation clusters from the origin to the boundary of the box of side length $2n$, conditioned on the existence of an open connection. The estimate we obtain is the radial analogue of the one found in the work of Damron, Hanson, and Sosoe. In the present case, however, there is no lowest crossing in the box to compare to, so we construct a path $γ$ from the origin to distance $n$ that consists of "three-arm" points, and whose volume can thus be estimated by $O(n^2π_3(n))$. Here, $π_3(n)$ is the "three-arm probability" that the origin is connected to distance $n$ by three arms, two open and one dual-closed. We then develop estimates for the existence of shortcuts around an edge $e$ in the box, conditional on $\{e\in γ\}$, to obtain a bound of the form $O(n^{2-δ}π_3(n))$ for some $δ>0$.

Optimal integrability threshold for Gibbs measures associated with focusing NLS on the torus

We study an optimal mass threshold for normalizability of the Gibbs measures associated with the focusing mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the one-dimensional torus. In an influential paper, Lebowitz, Rose, and Speer (1988) proposed a critical mass threshold given by the mass of the ground state on the real line. We provide a proof for the optimality of this critical mass threshold. The proof also applies to the two-dimensional radial problem posed on the unit disc. In this case, we answer a question posed by Bourgain and Bulut (2014) on the optimal mass threshold. Furthermore, in the one-dimensional case, we show that the Gibbs measure is indeed normalizable at the optimal mass threshold, thus answering an open question posed by Lebowitz, Rose, and Speer (1988). This normalizability at the optimal mass threshold is rather striking in view of the minimal mass blowup solution for the focusing quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the one-dimensional torus.

Subcritical Connectivity and Some Exact Tail Exponents in High Dimensional Percolation

In high dimensional percolation at parameter $p < p_c$, the one-arm probability $π_p(n)$ is known to decay exponentially on scale $(p_c - p)^{-1/2}$. We show the same statement for the ratio $π_p(n) / π_{p_c}(n)$, establishing a form of a hypothesis of scaling theory. As part of our study, we provide sharp estimates (with matching upper and lower bounds) for several quantities of interest at the critical probability $p_c$. These include the tail behavior of volumes of, and chemical distances within, spanning clusters, along with the scaling of the two-point function at "mesoscopic distance" from the boundary of half-spaces. As a corollary, we obtain the tightness of the number of spanning clusters of a diameter $n$ box on scale $n^{d-6}$; this result complements a lower bound of Aizenman.

Quasi-invariance of fractional Gaussian fields nonlinear wave equation with polynomial nonlinearity

We prove quasi-invariance of Gaussian measures $μ_s$ with Cameron-Martin space $H^s$ under the flow of the defocusing nonlinear wave equation with polynomial nonlinearities of any order for all $s>5/2$, including fractional $s$. This extends work of Oh-Tzvetkov [15] and Gunaratnam-Oh-Tzvetkov-Weber [10] who proved this result this result for a cubic nonlinearity and $s$ an even integer. The main contributions are a modified construction of a weighted adapted to higher order nonlinearity, and an energy estimate for the derivative of the energy replacing the integration by parts argument introduced in previous works. We also address the question of (non) quasi-invariance for the dispersionless model raised in the introductions to [15,10].

Concentration for integrable directed polymer models

In this paper, we consider four integrable models of directed polymers for which the free energy is known to exhibit KPZ fluctuations. A common framework for the analysis of these models was introduced in our recent work on the O'Connell-Yor polymer. We derive estimates for the central moments of the partition function, of any order, on the near-optimal scale $N^{1/3+ε}$, using an iterative method. Among the innovations exploiting the invariant structure, we develop formulas for correlations between functions of the free energy and the boundary weights that replace the Gaussian integration by parts appearing in the analysis of the O'Connell-Yor case.

Central moments of the free energy of the O'Connell-Yor polymer

Seppäläinen and Valkó showed in \cite{SV} that for a suitable choice of parameters, the variance growth of the free energy of the stationary O'Connell-Yor polymer is governed by the exponent $2/3$, characteristic of models in the KPZ universality class. We develop exact formulas based on Gaussian integration by parts to relate the cumulants of the free energy, $\log Z_{n,t}^θ$, to expectations of products of quenched cumulants of the time of the first jump from the boundary into the system, $s_0$. We then use these formulas to obtain estimates for the $k$-th central moment of $\log Z_{n,t}^θ$ as well as the $k$-th annealed moment of $s_0$ for $k> 2$, with nearly optimal exponents $(1/3)k+ε$ and $(2/3)k+ε$, respectively.

On the two-dimensional hyperbolic stochastic sine-Gordon equation

We study the two-dimensional stochastic sine-Gordon equation (SSG) in the hyperbolic setting. In particular, by introducing a suitable time-dependent renormalization for the relevant imaginary multiplicative Gaussian chaos, we prove local well-posedness of SSG for any value of a parameter $β^2 > 0$ in the nonlinearity. This exhibits sharp contrast with the parabolic case studied by Hairer and Shen (2016) and Chandra, Hairer, and Shen (2018), where the parameter is restricted to the subcritical range: $0 < β^2 < 8 π$. We also present a triviality result for the unrenormalized SSG.

Invariant Gibbs dynamics for the dynamical sine-Gordon model

In this note, we study the hyperbolic stochastic damped sine-Gordon equation (SdSG), with a parameter $β^2 > 0$, and its associated Gibbs dynamics on the two-dimensional torus. After introducing a suitable renormalization, we first construct the Gibbs measure in the range $0<β^2<4π$ via the variational approach due to Barashkov-Gubinelli (2018). We then prove almost sure global well-posedness and invariance of the Gibbs measure under the hyperbolic SdSG dynamics in the range $0<β^2<2π$. Our construction of the Gibbs measure also yields almost sure global well-posedness and invariance of the Gibbs measure for the parabolic sine-Gordon model in the range $0<β^2<4π$.

Applications of mesoscopic CLTs in random matrix theory

We present some applications of central limit theorems on mesoscopic scales for random matrices. When combined with the recent theory of "homogenization" for Dyson Brownian Motion, this yields the universality of quantities which depend on the behavior of single eigenvalues of Wigner matrices and $β$-ensembles. Among the results we obtain are the Gaussian fluctuations of single eigenvalues for Wigner matrices (without an assumption of 4 matching moments) and classical $β$-ensembles ($β=1, 2, 4$), Gaussian fluctuations of the eigenvalue counting function, and an asymptotic expansion up to order $o(N^{-1})$ for the expected value of eigenvalues in the bulk of the spectrum. The latter result solves a conjecture of Tao and Vu.

Fluctuations of the overlap at low temperature in the 2-spin spherical SK model

We describe the fluctuations of the overlap between two replicas in the 2-spin spherical SK model about its limiting value in the low temperature phase. We show that the fluctuations are of order $N^{-1/3}$ and are given by a simple, explicit function of the eigenvalues of a matrix from the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble. We show that this quantity converges and describe its limiting distribution in terms of the Airy1random point field (i.e., the joint limit of the extremal eigenvalues of the GOE) from random matrix theory.

An optimal regularity result on the quasi-invariant Gaussian measures for the cubic fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We study the transport properties of the Gaussian measures on Sobolev spaces under the dynamics of the cubic fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the circle. In particular, we establish an optimal regularity result for quasi-invariance of the mean-zero Gaussian measures on Sobolev spaces. The main new ingredient is an improved energy estimate established by performing an infinite iteration of normal form reductions on the energy functional. Furthermore, we show that the dispersion is essential for such a quasi-invariance result by proving non quasi-invariance of the Gaussian measures under the dynamics of the dispersionless model.

Fluctuations in first-passage percolation

We present a survey of techniques to obtain upper bounds for the variance of the passage time in first-passage percolation. The methods discussed are a combination of tools from the theory of concentration of measure, some of which we briefly review. These are combined with variations on an idea of Benjamini-Kalai-Schramm to obtain a logarithmic improvement over the linear bound implied by the Efron-Stein/Poincare inequality, for general edge-weight distributions.

Arm events in two-dimensional invasion percolation

We compare the probabilities of arm events in two-dimensional invasion percolation to those in critical percolation. Arm events are defined by the existence of a prescribed color sequence of invaded and non-invaded connections from the origin to distance n. We find that, for sequences of a particular form, arm probabilities in invasion percolation and critical percolation are comparable, uniformly in n, while they differ by a power of n for all others. A corollary of our results is the existence, on the triangular lattice, of arm exponents for invasion percolation, for any color sequence with at least two open (invaded) entries.

Strict inequality for the chemical distance exponent in two-dimensional critical percolation

We provide the first nontrivial upper bound for the chemical distance exponent in two-dimensional critical percolation. Specifically, we prove that the expected length of the shortest horizontal crossing path of a box of side length $n$ in critical percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ is bounded by $Cn^{2-δ}π_3(n)$, for some $δ>0$, where $π_3(n)$ is the "three-arm probability to distance $n$." This implies that the ratio of this length to the length of the lowest crossing is bounded by an inverse power of $n$ with high probability. In the case of site percolation on the triangular lattice, we obtain a strict upper bound for the exponent of $4/3$. The proof builds on the strategy developed in our previous paper, but with a new iterative scheme, and a new large deviation inequality for events in annuli conditional on arm events, which may be of independent interest.

On the chemical distance in critical percolation II

We continue our study of the chemical (graph) distance inside large critical percolation clusters in dimension two. We prove new estimates, which involve the three-arm probability, for the point-to-surface and point-to-point distances. We show that the point-to-point distance in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ between two points in the same critical percolation cluster has infinite second moment. We also give quantitative versions of our previous results comparing the length of the shortest crossing to that of the lowest crossing of a box.

Regularity conditions in the CLT for linear eigenvalue statistics of Wigner matrices

We show that the variance of centred linear statistics of eigenvalues of GUE matrices remains bounded for large $n$ for some classes of test functions less regular than Lipschitz functions. This observation is suggested by the limiting form of the variance (which has previously been computed explicitly), but it does not seem to appear in the literature. We combine this fact with comparison techniques following Tao-Vu and Erdös, Yau, et al. and a Littlewood-Paley type decomposition to extend the central limit theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics to functions in the Hölder class $C^{1/2+ε}$ in the case of matrices of Gaussian convolution type. We also give a variance bound which implies the CLT for test functions in the Sobolev space $H^{1+ε}$ and $C^{1-ε}$ for general Wigner matrices satisfying moment conditions. Previous results on the CLT impose the existence and continuity of at least one classical derivative.

On Global Solutions of a Zakharov type System

We consider a class of wave-Schroedinger systems with a Zakharov-Schulman type coupling. This class of systems is indexed by a parameter gamma which measures the strength of the null form in the nonlinearity of the wave equation. The case gamma = 1 corresponds to the well-known Zakharov system, while the case gamma = -1 corresponds to the Yukawa system. Here we show that sufficiently smooth and localized Cauchy data lead to pointwise decaying global solutions which scatter, for any gamma in (0,1].
