Excluding blowup at zero points of the potential by means of Liouville-type theorems

We prove a local version of a (global) result of Merle and Zaag about ODE behavior of solutions near blowup points for subcritical nonlinear heat equations. As an application, for the equation $u_t= Δu+V(x)f(u)$, we rule out the possibility of blowup at zero points of the potential $V$ for monotone in time solutions when $f(u)\sim u^p$ for large $u$, both in the Sobolev subcritical case and in the radial case. This solves a problem left open in previous work on the subject. Suitable Liouville-type theorems play a crucial role in the proofs.

Morrey spaces and classification of global solutions for a supercritical semilinear heat equation in $R^n$

We prove the boundedness of global classical solutions for the semilinear heat equation $u_t-Δu= |u|^{p-1}u$ in the whole space $R^n$, with $n\ge 3$ and supercritical power $p>(n+2)/(n-2)$. This is proved {\rmb without any radial symmetry or sign assumptions}, unlike in all the previously known results for the Cauchy problem, and under spatial decay assumptions on the initial data that are essentially optimal in view of the known counter-examples. Moreover, we show that any global classical solution has to decay in time faster than $t^{-1/(p-1)}$, which is also optimal and in contrast with the subcritical case. The proof relies on nontrivial modifications of techniques developed by Chou, Du and Zheng [Calc. Var. PDE 2007] and by Blatt and Struwe [IMRN, 2015] for the case of convex bounded domains. They are based on weighted energy estimates of Giga-Kohn type, combined with an analysis of the equation in a suitable Morrey space. We in particular simplify the approach of Blatt and Struwe by establishing and using a result on global existence and decay for small initial data in the critical Morrey space $M^{2,4/(p-1)}(R^n)$, rather than $\eps$-regularity in a parabolic Morrey space. This method actually works for any convex, bounded or unbounded, smooth domain, but at the same time captures some of the specific behaviors associated with the case of the whole space $R^n$. As a consequence we also prove that the set of initial data producing global solutions is open in suitable topologies, and we show that the so-called "borderline" global weak solutions blow up in finite time and then become classical again and decay as $t\to\infty$. All these results put into light the key role played by the Morrey space $M^{2,4/(p-1)}$ in the understanding of the structure of the set of global solutions for $p>p_S$.

Single-point blow-up for parabolic systems with exponential nonlinearities and unequal diffusivities

We study positive blowing-up solutions of systems of the form: $$u_t=δ_1 Δu+e^{pv},\quad v_t= δ_2Δv+e^{qu},$$ with $δ_1,δ_2>0$ and $p, q>0$. We prove single-point blow-up for large classes of radially decreasing solutions. This answers a question left open in a paper of Friedman and Giga~(1987), where the result was obtained only for the equidiffusive case $δ_1=δ_2$ and the proof depended crucially on this assumption.

A Liouville-type theorem for the $3$-dimensional parabolic Gross-Pitaevskii and related systems

We prove a Liouville-type theorem for semilinear parabolic systems of the form $${\partial_t u_i}-Δu_i =\sum_{j=1}^{m}β_{ij} u_i^ru_j^{r+1}, \quad i=1,2,...,m$$ in the whole space ${\mathbb R}^N\times {\mathbb R}$. Very recently, Quittner [{\em Math. Ann.}, DOI 10.1007/s00208-015-1219-7 (2015)] has established an optimal result for $m=2$ in dimension $N\leq 2$, and partial results in higher dimensions in the range $p< N/(N-2)$. By nontrivial modifications of the techniques of Gidas and Spruck and of Bidaut-Véron, we partially improve the results of Quittner in dimensions $N\geq 3$. In particular, our results solve the important case of the parabolic Gross-Pitaevskii system -- i.e. the cubic case $r=1$ -- in space dimension $N=3$, for any symmetric $(m,m)$-matrix $(β_{ij})$ with nonnegative entries, positive on the diagonal. By moving plane and monotonicity arguments, that we actually develop for more general cooperative systems, we then deduce a Liouville-type theorem in the half-space ${\mathbb R}^N_+\times {\mathbb R}$. As applications, we give results on universal singularity estimates, universal bounds for global solutions, and blow-up rate estimates for the corresponding initial value problem.

Improved conditions for single-point blow-up in reaction-diffusion systems

We study positive blowing-up solutions of the system: $$u_{t}-δΔu=v^p,\,\,\, v_{t}-Δv=u^{q},$$ as well as of some more general systems. For any $p,\,q>1$, we prove single-point blow-up for any radially decreasing, positive and classical solution in a ball. This improves on previously known results in 3 directions: (i) no type I blow-up assumption is made (and it is known that this property may fail); (ii) no equidiffusivity is assumed, i.e. any $δ>0$ is allowed; (iii) a large class of nonlinearities $F(u,v)$, $G(u,v)$ can be handled, which need not follow a precise power behavior. As side result, we also obtain lower pointwise estimates for the final blow-up profiles.

A priori estimates and bifurcation of solutions for a noncoercive elliptic equation with critical growth in the gradient

We study nonnegative solutions of the boundary value problem $$-Δu = λc(x)u + μ(x)|\nabla u|^2 + h(x),\quad u\in H^1_0(Ω)\cap L^\infty(Ω), \leqno(P_λ)$$ where $Ω$ is a smooth bounded domain, $μ, c\in L^\infty(Ω)$, $h\in L^r(Ω)$ for some $r > n/2$ and $μ,c,h > {\hskip -3.5mm} {\atop \neq} 0$. Our main motivation is to study the "noncoercive" case. Namely, unlike in previous work on the subject, we do not assume $μ$ to be positive everywhere in $Ω$. In space dimensions up to $n=5$, we establish uniform a priori estimates for weak solutions of ($P_λ$) when $λ>0$ is bounded away from $0$. This is proved under the assumption that the supports of $μ$ and $c$ intersect, a condition that we show to be actually necessary, and in some cases we further assume that $μ$ is uniformly positive on the support of $c$ and/or some other conditions. As a consequence of our a priori estimates, assuming that ($P_0$) has a solution, we deduce the existence of a continuum ${\cal C}$ of solutions, such that the projection of ${\cal C}$ onto the $λ$-axis is an interval of the form $[0,a]$ for some $a>0$ and that the continuum ${\cal C}$ bifurcates from infinity to the right of the axis $λ=0$. In particular, for each $λ>0$ small enough, problem $(P_λ)$ has at least two distinct solutions.

Single point gradient blow-up on the boundary for a Hamilton-Jacobi equation with $p$-Laplacian diffusion

We study the initial-boundary value problem for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation with nonlinear diffusion $u_t=Δ_p u+|\nabla u|^q$ in a two-dimensional domain for $q>p>2$. It is known that the spatial derivative of solutions may become unbounded in finite time while the solutions themselves remain bounded. We show that, for suitably localized and monotone initial data, the gradient blow-up occurs at a single point of the boundary. Such a result was known up to now only in the case of linear diffusion ($p=2$). The analysis in the case $p>2$ is considerably more delicate.

Proportionality of components, Liouville theorems and a priori estimates for noncooperative elliptic systems

We study qualitative properties of positive solutions of noncooperative, possibly nonvariational, elliptic systems. We obtain new classification and Liouville type theorems in the whole Euclidean space, as well as in half-spaces, and deduce a priori estimates and existence of positive solutions for related Dirichlet problems. We significantly improve the known results for a large class of systems involving a balance between repulsive and attractive terms. This class contains systems arising in biological models of Lotka-Volterra type, in physical models of Bose-Einstein condensates and in models of chemical reactions.

Global existence of solutions for a chemotaxis-type system arising in crime modeling

We consider a nonlinear, strongly coupled, parabolic system arising in the modeling of burglary in residential areas. The system is of chemotaxis-type and involves a logarithmic sensivity function and specific interaction and relaxation terms. Under suitable assumptions on the data of the problem, we give a rigorous proof of the existence of a global and bounded, classical solution, thereby solving a problem left open in previous work on this model. Our proofs are based on the construction of approximate entropies and on the use of various functional inequalities. We also provide explicit numerical conditions for global existence when the domain in a square, including concrete cases involving values of the parameters which are expected to be physically relevant

Grow-up rate and refined asymptotics for a two-dimensional Patlak-Keller-Segel model in a disk

We consider a special case of the Patlak-Keller-Segel system in a disc, which arises in the modelling of chemotaxis phenomena. For a critical value of the total mass, the solutions are known to be global in time but with density becoming unbounded, leading to a phenomenon of mass-concentration in infinite time. We establish the precise grow-up rate and obtain refined asymptotic estimates of the solutions. Unlike in most of the similar, recently studied, grow-up problems, the rate is neither polynomial nor exponential. In fact, the maximum of the density behaves like $e^{\sqrt{2t}}$ for large time. In particular, our study provides a rigorous proof of a behaviour suggested by Sire and Chavanis [Phys. Rev. E, 2002] on the basis of formal arguments.

Sharp gradient estimate and Yau's Liouville theorem for the heat equation on noncompact manifolds

We derive a sharp, localized version of elliptic type gradient estimates for positive solutions (bounded or not) to the heat equation. These estimates are akin to the Cheng-Yau estimate for the Laplace equation and Hamilton's estimate for bounded solutions to the heat equation on compact manifolds. As applications, we generalize Yau's celebrated Liouville theorem for positive harmonic functions to positive eternal solutions of the heat equation, under certain growth condition. Surprisingly, this Liouville theorem for the heat equation does not hold even in ${\bf R}^n$ without such a condition. We also prove a sharpened long time gradient estimate for the log of heat kernel on noncompact manifolds. This has been an open problem in view of the well known estimates in the compact, short time case.
