A New Extension of Hořava-Lifshitz Gravity and Curing Pathologies of the Scalar Graviton

We consider an extension of the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with extra conformal symmetry by introducing a scalar field with higher order curvature terms. Relaxing the exact local Weyl symmetry, we construct an action with three free parameters which breaks local anisotropic Weyl symmetry but still preserves residual global Weyl symmetry. At low energies, it reduces to a Lorentz-violating scalar-tensor gravity. With a constant scalar field background and particular choices of the parameters, it reduces to the Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity, but any perturbation from these particular configurations produces some non-trivial extensions of HL gravity. The perturbation analysis of the new extended HL gravity in the Minkowski background shows thatthe pathological behaviors of scalar graviton, i.e., ghost or instability problem, and strong coupling problem do not emerge up to cubic order as well as quadratic order.

Coupling of Brans-Dicke scalar field with Horava-Lifshitz gravity

We look for a Brans-Dicke type of generalization of the Horava-Lifshitz gravity. It is shown that such a generalization is possible within the detailed balance condition. Classically, the resulting theory reduces in the IR limit to the usual Brans-Dicke theory with a negative cosmological constant for certain values of parameters. We then consider homogeneous and isotropic cosmology and study the effects of the new terms appearing in the model.

Anisotropic Weyl symmetry and cosmology

We construct an anisotropic Weyl invariant theory in the ADM formalism and discuss its cosmological consequences. It extends the original anisotropic Weyl invariance of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity using an extra scalar field. The action is invariant under the anisotropic transformations of the space and time metric components with an arbitrary value of the critical exponent $z$. One of the interesting features is that the cosmological constant term maintains the anisotropic symmetry for $z=-3$. We also include the ordinary matter and show that it can preserve the anisotropic Weylinvariance if the equation of state satisfies $P_m= zρ_m/3$. Then, we study cosmology of the Einstein-Hilbert-anisotropic Weyl (EHaW) action including the ordinary matter both with or without anisotropic Weyl invariance. The correlation of the critical exponent $z$ and the equation of state parameter $ω_m$ provides a new perspective of the cosmology. It is also shown that for particular value of $z=-3$, the EHaW action admits a late time accelerating universe.

Conformal Invariance in Einstein-Cartan-Weyl space

We consider conformally invariant form of the actions in Einstein, Weyl, Einstein-Cartan and Einstein-Cartan-Weyl space in general dimensions($>2$) and investigate the relations among them. In Weyl space, the observational consistency condition for the vector field determining non-metricity of the connection can be obtained from the equation of motion. In Einstein-Cartan space a similar role is played by the vector part of the torsion tensor. We consider the case where the trace part of the torsion is the Kalb-Ramond type of field. In this case, we express conformally invariant action in terms of two scalar fields of conformal weight -1, which can be cast into some interesting form. We discuss some applications of the result.

Hawking Temperature in Taub-NUT (A)dS spaces via the Generalized Uncertainty Principle

Using the extended forms of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle from string theory and the quantum gravity theory, we drived Hawking temperature of a Taub-Nut-(A)dS black hole. In spite of their distinctive natures such as asymptotically locally flat and breakdown of the area theorem of the horizon for the black holes, we show that the corrections to Hawking temperature by the generalized versions of the the Heisenberg uncertainty principle increases like the Schwarzschild-(A)dS black hole and give the reason why the Taub-Nut-(A)dS metric may have AdS/CFT dual picture.

Enhanced Supersymmetry of Nonrelativistic ABJM Theory

We study the supersymmetry enhancement of nonrelativistic limits of the ABJM theory for Chern-Simons level $k=1,2$. The special attention is paid to the nonrelativistic limit (known as `PAAP' case) containing both particles and antiparticles. Using supersymmetry transformations generated by the monopole operators, we find additional 2 kinematical, 2 dynamical, and 2 conformal supercharges for this case. Combining with the original 8 kinematical supercharges, the total number of supercharges becomes maximal: 14 supercharges, like in the well-known PPPP limit. We obtain the corresponding super Schrödinger algebra which appears to be isomorphic to the one of the PPPP case. We also discuss the role of monopole operators in supersymmetry enhancement and partial breaking of supersymmetry in nonrelativistic limit of the ABJM theory.

De-Sitter nonlinear sigma model and accelerating universe

We consider a cosmology with a non-compact nonlinear sigma model. The target space is of de-Sitter type and four scalar fields are introduced. The potential is absent but cosmological constant term $Λ$ is added. One of the scalar fields is time dependent and the remaining three fields have no time dependence but only spatial dependence. We show that a very simple ansatz for the scalar fields results in the accelerating universe with an exponential expansion at late times. It is pointed out that the presence of the energy density and pressure coming from the spatial variation of the three scalar fields plays an essential role in our analysis which includes $Λ=0$ as a special case and it discriminate from the standard $Λ$-dominated acceleration. We perform a stability analysis of the solutions and find that some solutions are classically stable and attractor. We also present a non-perturbative solution which asymptotically approaches an exponential acceleration and discusspossible cosmological implications in relation with dark energy. It turns out that the equation of state approaches asymptotically $ω=-1$ both from above and below, but the crossing does not occur. It predicts present value of $ω\sim -1\mp 0.07$, which is within the region allowed by the oservational data. This solution also exhibits a power law expansion at early times, and the energy density of the scalar fields mimics that of the stiff matter.

Notes on Supersymmetry Enhancement of ABJM Theory

We study the supersymmetry enhancement of ABJM theory. Starting from a ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Chern-Simons matter theory with gauge group U(2)$\times$U(2) which is a truncated version of the ABJM theory, we find by using the monopole operator that there is additional ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetry related to the gauge group. We show this additional supersymmetry can combine with ${\cal N}=6$ supersymmetry of the original ABJM theory to an enhanced ${\cal N}=8$ SUSY with gauge group U(2)$\times$U(2) in the case $k=1,2$. We also discuss the supersymmetry enhancement of the ABJM theory with U($N$)$\times$U($N$) gauge group and find a condition which should be satisfied by the monopole operator.

Quantum SUSY Algebra of $Q$-lumps in the Massive Grassmannian Sigma Model

We compute the $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY algebra of the massive Grassmannian sigma model in 2+1 dimensions. We first rederive the action of the model by using the Scherk-Schwarz dimensional reduction from $\mathcal{N}=1$ theory in 3+1 dimensions. Then, we perform the canonical quantization by using the Dirac method. We find that a particular choice of the operator ordering yields the quantum SUSY algebra of the $Q$-lumps with cental extension.

Supersymmetric Q-Lumps in the Grassmannian nonlinear sigma models

We construct the N=2 supersymmetric Grassmannian nonlinear sigma model for the massless case and extend it to massive N=2 model by adding an appropriate superpotential. We then study their BPS equations leading to supersymmetric Q-lumps carrying both topological and Noether charges. These solutions are shown to be always time dependent even sometimes involving multiple frequencies. Thus we illustrate explicitly that the time dependence is consistent with remaining supersymmetries of solitons.

Isospin particle on $S^{2}$ with arbitrary number of supersymmetries

We study the supersymmetric quantum mechanics of an isospin particle in the background of spherically symmetric Yang-Mills gauge field. We show that on $S^{2}$ the number of supersymmetries can be made arbitrarily large for a specific choice of the spherically symmetric SU(2) gauge field. However, the symmetry algebra containing the supercharges becomes nonlinear if the number of fermions is greater than two. We present the exact energy spectra and eigenfunctions, which can be written as the product of monopole harmonics and a certain isospin state. We also find that the supersymmetry is spontaneously broken if the number of supersymmetries is even.

A complete solution of a Constrained System: SUSY Monopole Quantum Mechanics

We solve the quantum mechanical problem of a charged particle on S^2 in the background of a magnetic monopole for both bosonic and supersymmetric cases by constructing Hilbert space and realizing the fundamental operators obeying complicated Dirac bracket relations in terms of differential operators. We find the complete energy eigenfunctions. Using the lowest energy eigenstates we count the number of degeneracies and examine the supersymmetric structure of the ground states in detail.

N=4 Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics with Magnetic Monopole

We propose an N=4 supersymmetric quantum mechanics of a charged particle on a sphere in the background of Dirac magnetic monopole and study the system using the CP(1) model approach. We explicitly calculate the symmetry algebra taking the operator ordering ambiguity into consideration. We find that it is given by the superalgebra SU(1|2)x SU(2). We show that the Hamiltonian can be written in terms of the Casimir invariant of SU(2). Using this relation and the lower bound for angular momentm we obtain the energy spectrum. We then examine the ground energy sector to find that the N=4 supersymmetry is spontaneously broken to N=2 for certain values of the monopole charge.

Supersymmetric Monopole Quantum Mechanics on Sphere

We study N=2 supersymmetric quantum mechanics of a charged particle on sphere in the background of Dirac magnetic monopole. We adopt CP(1) model approach in which the monopole interaction is free of singularity. In order to exploit manifest U(1) covariance in the superspace formalism, we introduce a gauge covariant chiral superfield which is annihilated by the gauge covariant superderivative instead of the usual superderivative. We carry out the quantization of the resulting system and compute the quantum mechanical spectrum. We obtain the condition for the spontaneous breaking of supersymmetries explicitely in terms of the monopole charge and a parameter characterizing the operator ordering ambiguity. We find that the supersymmetry is spontaneously broken unless a certain combination of theses quantities satisfies some quantization condition.

String Pair Creations in D-brane Systems

We investigate the criterion, on the Born-Infeld background fields, for the open string pair creation to occur in D$p$-(anti-)D$p$-brane systems. Although the pair creation occurs generically in both D$p$-D$p$ and D$p$-anti-D$p$ systems for the cases which meet the criterion, it is more drastic in D$p$-anti-D$p$-brane systems by some exponential factor depending on the background fields. Various configurations exhibiting pair creations are obtained via duality transformations. These include the spacelike scissors and two D-strings (slanted at different angles) passing through each other. We raise the scissors paradox and suggest a resolution based on the triple junction in IIB setup.

Lineal Trails of D2-D2bar Superstrings

We study the superstrings suspended between a D2- and an anti-D2-brane. We quantize the string in the presence of some general configuration of gauge fields over the (anti-)D-brane world volumes. The interstring can move only in a specific direction that is normal to the difference of the electric fields of each (anti-)D-branes. Especially when the electric fields are the same, the interstring cannot move. We obtain the condition for the tachyons to disappear from the spectrum.

Superfield formalism for the one loop effective action and CP(N) model in three dimensions

To obtain the one loop effective action for a given superfield theory, one encounters the notion such as the `supertrace' of a differential operator on superspace. We develop, in a systematic way for the superspace of arbitrary dimension, a method to determine the supertrace precisely. We present a formula to express the supertrace explicitly as the superspace integral, which enables us to write the one loop effective action within the superfield formalism and still maintain the manifest supersymmetry. In the second part of the paper, we apply the result to a three dimensional N=1 supersymmetric CP(N) model in the auxiliary superfield formalism. The model contains a novel topological interaction term. We show in the large N limit the one loop effective action is given by the supersymmetric Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory.

Gauge symmetry enhancement in Hamiltonian formalism

We study the Hamiltonian structure of the gauge symmetry enhancement in the enlarged CP(N) model coupled with U(2) Chern-Simons term, which contains a free parameter governing explicit symmetry breaking and symmetry enhancement. After giving a general discussion of the geometry of constrained phase space suitable for the symmetry enhancement, we explicitly perform the Dirac analysis of our model and compute the Dirac brackets for the symmetry enhanced and broken cases. We also discuss some related issues.
