A Task Force on Strong Coupling Determinations from Event Shapes

The strong coupling constant $α_s$ is a fundamental parameter of the Standard Model. Its precise determination is essential for accurately predicting, studying, and understanding processes at the Large Hadron Collider and future experiments such as the Future Circular Collider. Event shape and correlator observables measured at electron-positron colliders provide one of the cleanest environments for extracting $α_s$, thanks to their sensitivity to $α_s$ and the availability of high-precision data from the Large Electron-Positron Collider. More broadly, such observables provide an ideal setting to develop and test our understanding of the perturbative and non-perturbative elements of Quantum Chromodynamics, which will underpin the field's precision and discovery frontiers for decades to come. Despite these advances, significant discrepancies persist between different determinations of $α_s$ from event shapes, both in the extracted central values and estimated uncertainties. This document motivates the establishment of a dedicated Task Force to coordinate a community-wide effort addressing these open questions. We report on the first two-day meeting held at CERN in November 2025, summarizing the scientific discussion and documenting the experimental analyses identified as priorities during the meeting, as well as the concrete list of tasks to be carried out by the theory community in preparation for future meetings.

Quark and gluon two-loop beam functions for leading-jet $p_T$ and slicing at NNLO

We compute the complete set of two-loop beam functions for the transverse momentum distribution of the leading jet produced in association with an arbitrary colour-singlet system. Our results constitute the last missing ingredient for the calculation of the jet-vetoed cross section at small veto scales at the next-to-next-to-leading order, as well as an important ingredient for its resummation to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order. Our calculation is performed in the soft-collinear effective theory framework with a suitable regularisation of the rapidity divergences occurring in the phase-space integrals. We discuss the occurrence of soft-collinear mixing terms that might violate the factorisation theorem, and demonstrate that they are naturally absorbed into the beam functions at two loops in the exponential rapidity regularisation scheme when performing a multipole expansion of the measurement function. As in our recent computation of the two-loop soft function, we present the results as a Laurent expansion in the jet radius $R$. We provide analytic expressions for all flavour channels in $x$ space with the exception of a set of $R$-independent non-logarithmic terms that are given as numerical grids. We also perform a fully numerical calculation with exact $R$ dependence, and find that it agrees with our analytic expansion at the permyriad level or better. Our calculation allows us to define a next-to-next-to-leading order slicing method using the leading-jet $p_T$ as a slicing variable. As a check of our results, we carry out a calculation of the Higgs and $Z$ boson total production cross sections at the next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD.

Boosted Higgs-strahlung off a $W$ boson at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD

The production of a boosted Higgs boson in association with a charged weak ($W$) boson is a key process to scrutinize the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism at hadron colliders. This reaction constitutes the dominant Higgs production channel at large transverse momentum, providing unique sensitivity to Higgs-boson interactions with other Standard Model particles as well as to physics beyond the Standard Model. In this Letter, we present the first fully differential calculation of this important scattering process at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). We find that the N$^3$LO corrections, amounting to approximately $+2\%$ in the boosted regime, generally lie at the edge of or outside the standard scale variation band of the previous perturbative order. The residual dependence of the N$^3$LO prediction on perturbative scales is reduced to below the percent level, marking a milestone for the Higgs precision program.

$N$-Jettiness Soft Functions Made Simple

We present a new method to compute the soft function for the $N$-Jettiness variable for arbitrary $N$ at high perturbative orders in QCD. It is based on the observation that the most singular part of the soft function, the dipole contribution, can be represented by a sum of an analytically calculable inclusive soft function and a remainder. The latter is absent at NLO, is immediately finite at NNLO and can be made finite with the help of simple NLO-like infrared subtractions at N$^3$LO. As a byproduct of this approach, we derive a very simple formula for the tripole contribution to the $N$-Jettiness NNLO soft function, which results in a fast numerical evaluation. We apply this method to compute the $N$-Jettiness soft function at NNLO, and report numerical results for up to five jets for the hadron-collider soft function. We finally outline the prospects for applications at N$^3$LO.

A Conformal Bridge for the Light Transform of QCD Correlation Functions

Understanding the link between correlation functions (CFs) of local operators and measurable collider correlators has emerged as a new opportunity in the study of gauge theory dynamics at colliders. While in Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) this connection is established by the light transform, the non-conformal nature of QCD complicates its use beyond the lowest perturbative order. We show that a continuation of the CFs to the Wilson-Fisher fixed point can be used as a method to overcome these obstacles, serving as a conformal bridge for the evaluation of the light transform. At the fixed point, the renormalized CF of four local operators features a variable drop and only depends on two conformal cross ratios, in line with a genuine CFT quantity. This allows us to exploit CFT techniques to perform, for the first time, its light transform at higher loop orders. Remarkably, the resulting collider correlator in four dimensions can be recovered from this result simply by using lower-loop data. We demonstrate this method by computing the back-to-back limit of the charge-charge correlation (QQC) at two loops in QCD through the light transform of the CF of four vector currents in the sequential light-cone limit, reproducing a recent prediction.

Physics case for low-$\sqrt{s}$ QCD studies at FCC-ee

Measurements of hadronic final states in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions at centre-of-mass (CM) energies below the Z peak can notably extend the FCC-ee physics reach in terms of precision quantum chromodynamics (QCD) studies. Hadronic final states can be studied over a range of hadronic energies $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{had}} \approx 20\mbox{--}80\,\mathrm{GeV}$ by exploiting events with hard initial- and final-state QED radiation (ISR/FSR) during the high-luminosity Z-pole run, as well as in dedicated short (about one month long) $e^{+}e^{-}$ runs at CM energies $\sqrt{s} \approx 40\,\mathrm{GeV}$ and $60\,\mathrm{GeV}$. Using realistic estimates and fast detector simulations, we show that data samples of about $10^{9}$ hadronic events can be collected at the FCC-ee at each of the low-CM-energy points. Such datasets can be exploited in a variety of precision QCD measurements, including studies of light-, heavy-quark and gluon jet properties, hadronic event shapes, fragmentation functions, and nonperturbative dynamics. This will offer valuable insights into strong interaction physics, complementing data from nominal FCC-ee runs at higher center-of-mass energies, $\sqrt{s} \approx 91, 160, 240,$ and $365\,\mathrm{GeV}$.

Analytical Soft Functions for Heavy-Quark Final States at Hadron Colliders

We present the first computation of the complete two-loop, fully-differential soft function describing the production of a heavy-quark pair in association with a color-singlet system at hadron colliders. This result constitutes one of the most complex soft functions known to date and it is obtained in closed analytic form for generic multi-dimensional kinematics. This allows us to obtain novel analytic results for the transverse-momentum-dependent and threshold soft functions in this class of processes. We further obtain a decomposition of the soft function into dipole and tripole color correlators, thereby supplying essential building blocks for processes involving a heavy-quark pair produced together with additional light jets at both hadron and lepton colliders. These results represent a key ingredient for advancing precision predictions for heavy-quark physics at the LHC.

A new suite of Lund-tree observables to resolve jets

We introduce a class of collider observables, named Lund-Tree Shapes (LTS), defined from declustering trees originating from the Lund jet plane representation of the QCD radiation pattern in multi-jet scattering processes. At the differential level, they are continuous global variables akin classical event shapes and $n\to n+1$ jet-resolution parameters, which probe the geometry and hierarchical structure of the radiation in an event. At the integrated, cumulative level, they naturally define $n$ jet rates, providing a jet-multiplicity-based characterisation of multi-jet final states. Their definition applies to scattering processes with any number of resolved jets in the final state, as well as to groomed jets. They are thus usable as resolution variables in the context of higher-order calculations via phase-space slicing, matching fixed-order calculations to parton showers, and testing the logarithmic accuracy of shower algorithms. From a theoretical viewpoint, such observables feature a simple all-order structure and are free of non-global logarithmic corrections. As an initial application, we derive next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accurate predictions for processes with two QCD legs at $e e$, $pp$ and $e p$ colliders, and matched predictions to next-to-next-to-leading order for the LHC, discussing aspects of collider phenomenology.

Uncharted Logarithmic Structures in QCD Transverse-Energy Flow

We investigate the QCD transverse-energy ($E_T$) flow distribution within an azimuthal region of phase space, defined by an angular interval $Δϕ$ on the plane transverse to a chosen jet axis. Vetoes on the resulting $E_T$ are widely employed at the LHC to isolate missing transverse momentum in final states with invisible particles. We show that this observable has logarithmic structures never seen before in QCD calculations. Notably, its description involves the resummation of non-global and coherence-violating logarithmic contributions that are more singular than any reported to date. We analyze its all-orders behavior, providing analytical resummations at next-to-double-logarithmic accuracy for $e^+e^-$ and $pp$ collisions, and numerical resummations at leading-logarithmic accuracy in the Veneziano limit for $pp$ collisions. We further present a computation of the leading coherence-violating correction for $pp$ collisions. The intricate structure of vetoes in azimuthal gaps reveals new aspects of QCD dynamics and offers a novel probe of collinear-factorization breaking at the LHC.

Correlation Function/Wilson Loop Duality in Gauge Theory from EFT

In this Letter, we initiate a systematic study of the $n$-point correlation functions (CF) in gauge theories in the sequential light-cone (SLC) limit. Focusing on QCD, we formulate a factorization theorem for the CF of four vector currents in this limit using tools from soft-collinear effective field theory (SCET). This result unveils a duality between CF and Wilson loops in non-conformal field theories, according to which the singular structure of the CF is described by a null polygonal Wilson loop dressed by universal jet functions and current form factors, directly related to well-known ingredients in collider physics. We employ this new factorization theorem to obtain the singular terms of the four-point CF in QCD in the SLC limit up to three loops. This constitutes the first determination of terms beyond one loop and in particular determines, for the first time, conformal-symmetry-breaking terms induced by the non-vanishing $β$-function of QCD. As a stringent check, we verify that our result satisfies the anomalous conformal Ward identities and its leading-transcendental term reproduces the known correlation function in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM to three loops. Our results are easily generalized to the multi-point case, offering a powerful tool for future applications of SCET to the study of the fundamental structure of gauge theories.

On the Edge of Safety: Charge-Charge Correlation in the Back-to-Back Limit

We investigate the Charge-Charge Correlation (QQC) in electron-positron annihilation as a probe of charge dynamics in Quantum Chromodynamics. While generally divergent beyond leading order, we show that the QQC is infrared and collinear safe in the back-to-back limit, a property that we dub leading-power safety. This enables an analytic perturbative treatment that bypasses the reliance on non-perturbative track or fragmentation functions. Using Soft-Collinear Effective Field Theory, we derive a factorization theorem and determine its logarithmic behavior analytically up to four loops in QCD, uncovering remarkable connections with the Energy-Energy Correlation (EEC). Prior to this work, the behavior of the QQC beyond leading order was entirely unknown; we now establish its resummation to next-to-next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N$^4$LL) accuracy, placing it among the observables with the highest perturbative precision alongside the EEC. Our results are validated through a numerical analysis using Event2, exhibiting excellent agreement with the predicted singular terms. This work establishes the QQC as a novel, calculable probe of charge dynamics and unveils a new window into the inner workings of non-Abelian gauge theories.

Scaling violation in power corrections to energy correlators from the light-ray OPE

In recent years, energy correlators have emerged as a powerful tool to explore the field theoretic structure of strong interactions at particle colliders. In this Letter we initiate a novel study of the non-perturbative power corrections to the projected $N$-point energy correlators in the limit where the angle between the detectors is small. Using the light-ray operator product expansion (OPE) as a guiding principle, we derive the power corrections in terms of two non-perturbative quantities describing the fragmentation of quarks and gluons. In analogy with their perturbative leading-power counterpart, we show that power corrections obey a classical scaling behavior that is violated at the quantum level. This crucially results in a dependence on the hard scale $Q$ of the problem that is calculable in perturbation theory. Our analytic predictions are successfully tested against Monte Carlo simulations for both lepton and hadron colliders, marking a significant step forward in the understanding of these observables.

A new standard for the logarithmic accuracy of parton showers

We report on a major milestone in the construction of logarithmically accurate final-state parton showers, achieving next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy for the wide class of observables known as event shapes. The key to this advance lies in the identification of the relation between critical NNLL analytic resummation ingredients and their parton-shower counterparts. Our analytic discussion is supplemented with numerical tests of the logarithmic accuracy of three shower variants for more than a dozen distinct event-shape observables in $Z \to q \bar q$ and Higgs $\to gg$ decays. The NNLL terms are phenomenologically sizeable, as illustrated in comparisons to data.

Planar Six-Point Feynman Integrals for Four-Dimensional Gauge Theories

We compute all planar two-loop six-point Feynman integrals entering scattering observables in massless gauge theories such as QCD. A central result of this paper is the formulation of the differential-equations method under the algebraic constraints stemming from four-dimensional kinematics, which in this case leaves only 8 independent scales. We show that these constraints imply that one must compute topologies with only up to 8 propagators, instead of the expected 9. This leads to the decoupling of entire classes of integrals that do not contribute to scattering amplitudes in four dimensional gauge theories. We construct a pure basis and derive their canonical differential equations, of which we discuss the numerical solution. This work marks an important step towards the calculation of massless $2\to 4$ scattering processes at two loops.

The two-loop fully differential soft function for $Q\bar{Q}V$ production at lepton colliders

We consider the production of a pair of heavy quarks $Q\bar{Q}$ in association with a generic colour singlet system $V$ at lepton colliders, and present the first analytic calculation of the two-loop soft function differential in the total momentum of the real radiation. The calculation is performed by reducing the relevant Feynman integrals into a canonical basis of master integrals by means of integration-by-parts identities. The resulting integrals are then evaluated by solving a system of differential equations in the kinematic invariants, whose boundary conditions are determined analytically with some care due to the presence of Coulomb singularities. The fully differential soft function is expressed in terms of Goncharov polylogarithms. This result is an essential ingredient for a range of N$^3$LL resummations for key collider observables at lepton colliders, such as the $Q\bar{Q}V$ production cross section at threshold and observables sensitive to the total transverse momentum of the radiation in heavy-quark final states. Moreover, it constitutes the complete final-final dipole contribution to the fully differential soft function needed for the description of $Q\bar{Q}V$ production at hadron colliders, which plays an important role in the LHC physics programme.

Two-loop anomalous dimensions for small-$R$ jet versus hadronic fragmentation functions

We study the collinear fragmentation of highly energetic jets defined with a small jet radius. In particular, we investigate how the corresponding fragmentation functions differ from their hadronic counterpart defined in the common $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme. We find that the anomalous dimensions governing the perturbative evolution of the two fragmentation functions differ starting at the two loop order. We compute for the first time the new anomalous dimensions at two loops and confirm our predictions by comparing the inclusive small-$R$ jet spectrum against a fixed order perturbative calculation at ${\cal O}(α_s^2)$. To investigate the dependence of the anomalous dimension on the kinematic cutoff variable, we study the fragmentation functions of Cambridge jets defined with a transverse momentum cutoff as opposed to an angular cutoff $R$. We further study the evolution of the small-$R$ fragmentation function with an alternative cutoff scale, proportional to $z R$, representing the maximum possible transverse momentum of emissions within a jet. In these cases we find that the two-loop anomalous dimensions coincide with the $\overline{\rm MS}$ DGLAP ones, highlighting a correspondence between the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme and a transverse-momentum cutoff.

A collinear shower algorithm for NSL non-singlet fragmentation

We formulate a collinear partonic shower algorithm that achieves next-to-single-logarithmic (NSL, $α_s^n L^{n-1}$) accuracy for collinear-sensitive non-singlet fragmentation observables. This entails the development of an algorithm for nesting triple-collinear splitting functions. It also involves the inclusion of the one-loop double-collinear corrections, through a $z$-dependent NLO-accurate effective $1\to 2$ branching probability, using a formula that can be applied more generally also to future full showers with $1\to3$ splitting kernels. The specific NLO branching probability is calculated in two ways, one based on slicing, the other using a subtraction approach based on recent analytical calculations. We close with demonstrations of the shower's accuracy for non-singlet partonic fragmentation functions and the energy spectrum of small-$R$ quark jets. This work represents an important conceptual step towards general NNLL accuracy in parton showers.

Exploring high-purity multi-parton scattering at hadron colliders

Multi-parton interactions are a fascinating phenomenon that occur in almost every high-energy hadron--hadron collision, yet are remarkably difficult to study quantitatively. In this letter we present a strategy to optimally disentangle multi-parton interactions from the primary scattering in a collision. That strategy enables probes of multi-parton interactions that are significantly beyond the state of the art, including their characteristic momentum scale, the interconnection between primary and secondary scatters, and the pattern of three and potentially even more simultaneous hard scatterings. This opens a path to powerful new constraints on multi-parton interactions for LHC phenomenology and to the investigation of their rich field-theoretical structure.
