Parton showers beyond leading logarithmic accuracy

Parton showers are among the most widely used tools in collider physics. Despite their key importance, none so far has been able to demonstrate accuracy beyond a basic level known as leading logarithmic (LL) order, with ensuing limitations across a broad spectrum of physics applications. In this letter, we propose criteria for showers to be considered next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accurate. We then introduce new classes of shower, for final-state radiation, that satisfy the main elements of these criteria in the widely used large-$N_C$ limit. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate these showers' agreement with all-order analytical NLL calculations for a range of observables, something never so far achieved for any parton shower.

MiNNLO$_{\rm PS}$: Optimizing $2\to 1$ hadronic processes

We consider the MiNNLO$_{\rm PS}$ method to consistently combine next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD calculations with parton-shower simulations. We identify the main sources of differences between MiNNLO$_{\rm PS}$ and fixed-order NNLO predictions for inclusive observables due to corrections beyond NNLO accuracy and present simple prescriptions to either reduce or remove them. Refined predictions are presented for Higgs, charged- and neutral-current Drell Yan production. The agreement with fixed-order NNLO calculations is considerably improved for inclusive observables and scale uncertainties are reduced. The codes are released within the POWHEG-BOX.

Logarithmic accuracy of parton showers: a fixed-order study

We formulate some first fundamental elements of an approach for assessing the logarithmic accuracy of parton-shower algorithms based on two broad criteria: their ability to reproduce the singularity structure of multi-parton matrix elements, and their ability to reproduce logarithmic resummation results. We illustrate our approach by considering properties of two transverse momentum ordered final-state showers, examining features up to second order in the strong coupling. In particular we identify regions where they fail to reproduce the known singular limits of matrix elements. The characteristics of the shower that are responsible for this also affect the logarithmic resummation accuracies of the shower, both in terms of leading (double) logarithms at subleading $N_C$ and next-to-leading (single) logarithms at leading $N_C$.

The transverse momentum spectrum of weak gauge bosons at N$^3$LL+NNLO

We present accurate QCD predictions for the transverse momentum pT spectrum of electroweak gauge bosons at the LHC for 13 TeV collisions, based on a consistent combination of a NNLO calculation at large pT and N3LL resummation in the small pT limit. The inclusion of higher order corrections leads to substantial changes in the shape of the differential distributions, and the residual perturbative uncertainties are reduced to the few percent level across the whole transverse momentum spectrum. We examine the ratio of pT distributions in charged- and neutral-current Drell-Yan production, and study different prescriptions for the estimate of perturbative uncertainties that rely on different degrees of correlation between these processes. We observe an excellent stability of the ratios with respect to the perturbative order, indicating a strong correlation between the corresponding QCD corrections.

A formalism for the resummation of non-factorizable observables in SCET

In the framework of soft-collinear effective theory (SCET), we show how to formulate the resummation for a broad family of final-state, global observables in high-energy collisions in a general way that is suitable for a numerical calculation. Contrary to the standard SCET approach, this results in a method that does not require an observable-specific factorization theorem. We present a complete formulation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order for $e^+e^-$ observables, and show how to systematically extend the framework to higher orders. This work paves the way to automated resummation in SCET for several physical observables within a single framework.

High precision determination of $α_s$ from a global fit of jet rates

We present state-of-the-art extractions of the strong coupling based on N$^3$LO+NNLL accurate predictions for the two-jet rate in the Durham clustering algorithm at $e^+e^-$ collisions, as well as a simultaneous fit of the two- and three-jet rates taking into account correlations between the two observables. The fits are performed on a large range of data sets collected at LEP and PETRA colliders, with energies spanning from $35$ GeV to $207$ GeV. Owing to the high accuracy of the predictions used, the perturbative uncertainty is considerably smaller than that due to hadronization. Our best determination at the $Z$ mass is $α_s(M_Z) = 0.11881 \pm 0.00063(exp.) \pm 0.00101(hadr.) \pm 0.00045(ren.) \pm 0.00034(res.)$, which is in agreement with the latest world average and has a comparable total uncertainty.

Bottom-quark effects in Higgs production at intermediate transverse momentum

We provide a precise description of the Higgs boson transverse momentum distribution including top and bottom quark contributions, that is valid for transverse momenta in the range mb < pt < mt, where mb and mt are the bottom and top quark masses. This description is based on a combination of fixed next-to-leading order (NLO) results with next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) transverse momentum resummation. We show that ambiguities in the resummation procedure for the b-quark loops are of the same order as the related fixed-order uncertainties. We conclude that the current uncertainty in the top-bottom interference contribution to the Higgs transverse momentum spectrum is O(20%).

The Sudakov radiator for jet observables and the soft physical coupling

We present a procedure to calculate the Sudakov radiator for a generic recursive infrared and collinear (rIRC) safe observable in two-scale problems. We give closed formulae for the radiator at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy, which completes the general NNLL resummation for this class of observables in the {\tt ARES} method for processes with two emitters at the Born level. As a byproduct, we define a physical coupling in the soft limit, and we provide an explicit expression for its relation to the $\overline{\rm MS}$ coupling up to ${\cal O}(α_s^3)$. This physical coupling constitutes one of the ingredients for a NNLL accurate parton shower algorithm. As an application we obtain analytic NNLL results, of which several are new, for all angularities $τ_x$ defined with respect to both the thrust axis and the winner-take-all axis, and for the moments of energy-energy correlation $FC_x$ in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. For the latter observables we find that, for some values of $x$, an accurate prediction of the peak of the differential distribution requires a simultaneous resummation of the logarithmic terms originating from the two-jet limit and at the Sudakov shoulder.

A numerical formulation of resummation in effective field theory

In this article we show how the resummation of infrared and collinear logarithms within Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) can be formulated in a way that makes it suitable for a Monte-Carlo implementation. This is done by applying the techniques developed for automated resummation using the branching formalism, which have resulted in the general resummation approach CAESAR/ARES. This work builds a connection between the two resummation approaches, and paves the way to automated resummation in SCET. As a case study we consider the resummation of the thrust distribution in electron-positron collisions at next-to-leading logarithm (NLL). However, the results presented here are easily generalizable to more complicated observables and processes as well as to higher orders in the logarithmic accuracy.

On Light Resonance Interpretations of the B Decay Anomalies

We sketch a novel method to search for light di-leptonic resonances by exploiting precision measurements of Drell-Yan production. Motivated by the recent hints of lepton flavour universality violation in $B \to K^{\ast} \ell^+ \ell^-$, we illustrate our proposal by studying the case of spin-1 resonances that couple to muons and have masses in the range of a few GeV. We show that the existing LHC data on $pp \to Z/γ^\ast \to μ^+ μ^-$ put non-trivial constraints on light di-muon resonance interpretations of $B$ decay anomalies in a model-independent fashion. The impact of our proposal on the long-standing discrepancy in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is also briefly discussed.

On the excess in the inclusive $W^+W^-\rightarrow l^+l^-ν\barν$ cross section

In this note we analyse the excess in the $W^+W^-$ inclusive cross section recently measured by the LHC experiments. We point out that in fact for the ATLAS fiducial cross sections there is no excess in the measurements compared to the NLO QCD predictions. We also argue that higher order effects to the fiducial cross section are small, and tend to cancel each other, hence the inclusion of NNLO and NNLL corrections will not modify this agreement significantly. We find that at 8 TeV a substantial part of the disagreement with the NLO prediction for the total cross section observed by ATLAS is due to the extrapolation carried out with POWHEG.

A general method for the resummation of event-shape distributions in e^+e^- annihilation

We present a novel method for resummation of event shapes to next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. We discuss the technique and describe its implementation in a numerical program in the case of e^+e^- collisions where the resummed prediction is matched to NNLO. We reproduce all the existing predictions and present new results for oblateness and thrust major.

Quark masses in Higgs production with a jet veto

We study the impact of finite mass effects due to top and bottom loops in the jet-veto distribution for Higgs production. We discuss the appearance of non-factorizing logarithms in the region pt > m_b. We study their numerical impact and argue that these terms can be treated as a finite remainder. We therefore detail our prescription for resumming the jet-vetoed cross section and for assessing its uncertainty in the presence of finite mass effects. Resummation for the jet-veto, including mass effects, has been implemented in the public code JetVHeto.

The two-jet rate in e^+e^- at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic order

We present the first next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic resummation for the two-jet rate in $e^+e^-$ annihilation in the Durham and Cambridge algorithms. The results are obtained by extending the ARES method to observables involving any global, recursively infrared and collinear safe jet algorithm in e^+e^- collisions. As opposed to other methods, this approach does not require a factorization theorem for the observables. We present predictions matched to next-to-next-to-leading order, and a comparison to LEP data.

Constraining Light-Quark Yukawa Couplings from Higgs Distributions

We propose a novel strategy to constrain the bottom and charm Yukawa couplings by exploiting LHC measurements of transverse momentum distributions in Higgs production. Our method does not rely on the reconstruction of exclusive final states or heavy-flavour tagging. Compared to other proposals it leads to an enhanced sensitivity to the Yukawa couplings due to distortions of the differential Higgs spectra from emissions which either probe quark loops or are associated to quark-initiated production. We derive constraints using data from LHC Run I, and we explore the prospects of our method at future LHC runs. Finally, we comment on the possibility of bounding the strange Yukawa coupling.

Merging WW and WW+jet with MINLO

We present a simulation program for the production of a pair of W bosons in association with a jet, that can be used in conjunction with general-purpose shower Monte Carlo generators, according to the POWHEG method. We have further adapted and implemented the MINLO' method on top of the NLO calculation underlying our WW+jet generator. Thus, the resulting simulation achieves NLO accuracy not only for inclusive distributions in WW+jet production but also WW production, i.e. when the associated jet is not resolved, without the introduction of any unphysical merging scale. This work represents the first extension of the MINLO' method, in its original form, to the case of a genuine underlying 2->2 process, with non-trivial virtual corrections.

A new approach to the Higgs transverse-momentum resummation at NNLL+NNLO

We propose a new approach to the resummation of the transverse-momentum distribution of a high-mass colour-singlet system in hadronic collisions. The resummation is performed in momentum space and is free of kinematic singularities at small transverse momentum. We derive a formula accurate at the next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic level, and present the first matched predictions to next-to-next-to-leading order for Higgs-boson production in gluon fusion at the LHC. This method can be adapted to all observables featuring kinematic cancellations in the infrared region.

BLM Scale Fixing in Event Shape Distributions

We study the application of the Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie (BLM) scale setting prescription to event shape distributions in electron-positron collisions. The renormalization scale is set dynamically according to the BLM method. We study NLO predictions and we discuss extensions of the prescription to NNLO.
