Higgs Decays at NLO in the SMEFT

The calculation of precise predictions for Higgs decays is a necessary ingredient for determining Higgs properties at the LHC and future colliders. We compute all two- and three-body Higgs decays at next-to-leading order (NLO) in both QCD and electroweak interactions using the dimension-6 Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). Results for four-body Higgs decays that are accurate to NLO QCD/electroweak order in the SMEFT are obtained using the narrow width approximation. Our results are contained in a flexible Monte Carlo program, NEWiSH, that is publicly available and we illustrate the impact of the NLO electroweak corrections for HL-LHC, Tera-Z, and Higgstrahlung projections.

Theoretical and phenomenological aspects of the Electroweak physics WG studies for the 2026 ESPPU Physics Briefing Book

The 2025-2026 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics placed renewed emphasis on quantitatively robust comparisons between future collider projects. Within this context, the Electroweak physics working group of the Physics Preparatory Group (PPG EW WG) carried out a comprehensive assessment of the projected sensitivities of different facilities to Higgs boson, electroweak and top-quark observables, with particular attention on different scenarios of theoretical uncertainties. These studies are summarized in the Physics Briefing Book. The aim of this document is to (a) provide a more detailed account of the evaluation of theoretical uncertainties, which was undertaken within the PPG EW WG, and (b) document the collider-specific inputs used in the electroweak and Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) fits and discuss any needed modifications in order to harmonize assumptions between projects. In presenting the detailed theoretical uncertainty treatment and the explicit collider inputs and assumptions, this work aims to improve the reproducibility and future extensibility of the results presented in the Physics Briefing Book.

Higgs Boson Pair Production via Gluon Fusion: Higher-Order Corrections and Theoretical Uncertainties

In this contribution, the higher-order QCD and electroweak corrections to Standard Model Higgs boson pair production via the gluon-fusion mechanism, $gg\to hh$, are summarized and the different sources of theoretical uncertainty are assessed. The discussion includes finite top quark mass effects, matching to parton showers, approximate NNLO and N$^3$LO QCD corrections, NLO electroweak effects, and uncertainties associated with the top quark mass scheme and perturbative scale choices. In addition, we provide an updated state-of-the-art recommendation for the inclusive gluon-fusion Higgs boson pair production cross section and the corresponding Higgs boson pair invariant-mass distribution.

Impact of NLO EW and QCD corrections to dimension-6 SMEFT coefficients constraints in Higgs decays

This paper presents the impact of the inclusion of next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD and electroweak (EW) corrections for dimension-6 Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) predictions for the Higgs decays in Higgs couplings measurements at the Large Hadron Collider. Such higher-order corrections will be increasingly important for the precise Higgs and electroweak measurements expected at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The results are compared with a SMEFT parameterisation employing inputs from a previous ATLAS study, in which the dimension-6 SMEFT contributions are evaluated for each production and decay process at the lowest non-vanishing perturbative QCD order of the corresponding SM process. The effects of the SMEFT NLO QCD/EW contributions to the Higgs decay channels are largest for 2-fermion operators involving the third generation. The sensitivity to the Higgs tri-linear coupling is also explored.

Complete NLO SMEFT Electroweak Corrections to Higgs Decays

Precise predictions for Higgs decays are a crucial ingredient of the search for beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics and the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) is a valuable tool for quantifying deviations from the Standard Model (SM). We present the complete set of predictions for the 2- and 3- body Higgs decays at next-to-leading order (NLO), considering QCD and electroweak corrections and including all contributions from the dimension-6 SMEFT operators and with an arbitrary flavor structure. Including the NLO SMEFT results for Higgs decays greatly increases the sensitivity to BSM physics of the $e^+e^-\rightarrow Zh$ process at FCC-ee, as compared with that obtained using only the total cross section.

NLO EW and QCD dimension-6 SMEFT results for Higgs and gauge boson decays in POPxf format

We present next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD and electroweak (EW) results using the dimension-6 SMEFT for all 2- and 4- body Higgs decays, for $Z$ and $W$ decays along with the corresponding EW precision observables, and for the Higgstrahlung process $e^+e^-\rightarrow ZH$ at $\sqrt{s}=240$, $365$ and $500$ GeV. The results are presented in the POPxf format for ease of use in experimental and phenomenological studies. Of particular utility is the total Higgs width, including all dimension-6 contributions at NLO. In addition, we present the differential distributions $dΓ/dm_{Z*}$ for $H\rightarrow l^+l^- Z^*, Z^*\rightarrow l^+l^-$ at NLO in the SMEFT.

The $e^+ e^- \rightarrow Z H$ Process in the SMEFT Beyond Leading Order

We systematically study potential effects of Beyond the Standard Model physics in the $e^+ e^- \rightarrow Z H$ process. To this end, we include all relevant dimension-6 Standard Model Effective Field Theory operators and work to next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in the electroweak coupling. We consider both polarized and unpolarized electron and positron beams and present results for $\sqrt{s}=240, ~365$ and $500~{\rm GeV}$, emphasizing contributions where the NLO predictions differ significantly from the leading order results. At NLO, a sensitivity arises to operators that do not contribute at tree level, such as the Higgs tri-linear coupling, CP-violating operators, and dimension-6 operators involving the top quark, among many others. We compare the prospects of future $e^+e^-$ colliders to explore these new physics effects with existing measurements from the LHC, electron EDMs (for CP violating operators), and Z pole measurements.

Weak corrections to Minimal Dark Matter annihilations

We compute the one-loop weak corrections to the annihilation cross sections of fermionic Minimal Dark Matter multiplets. Infrared divergences cancel in the dominant $s$-wave combination relevant for the thermal relic abundance. Instead, infrared-enhanced corrections affect velocity-suppressed rates, through a Sudakov/Sommerfeld interplay. The corrections grow with the multiplet size and are at the $5\%$ level in the most motivated cases: the Higgsino-like doublet, the wino-like triplet, the stable quintuplet.

Parametrisation and dictionary for CP violating Higgs boson interactions

Searches for charge-parity (CP) violating interactions of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson are a key priority of the LHC physics program. Experimental results from ATLAS and CMS are often reinterpreted within a variety of theoretical parametrisations, the most commonly used being the Higgs basis, $κ$'s and angles, CP fractions and effective field theories (EFT) such as the SMEFT and the Higgs EFT. However, differing conventions and assumptions across the literature make the translation between these parametrisations nontrivial and prone to inconsistencies. In this paper, we provide a unified framework and construct explicit dictionaries connecting these different approaches. This facilitates a transparent comparison between theoretical studies and experimental analyses, enabling more robust interpretations of CP violating effects in Higgs boson interactions.

Quantum tomography of $H \to ZZ, WW$ beyond leading order

We revisit quantum tomography of $H \to ZZ$ and $H \to WW$ in the presence of higher-order corrections. We verify that neither the use of an effective spin analysing power (only for $ZZ$) or a photon veto are sufficient to render the naively-constructed spin density operators physical. A subtraction of higher-order corrections is thus necessary to perform consistent quantum tomography. Such corrections are small when compared to expected experimental uncertainties with current data. As a by-product, we point out the striking possibility to observe parity-violating effects in $H \to WW$.

Probing Top Quark-Electron Interactions at Future Colliders

Top quark interactions offer a window into possible new high scale physics and many models of new physics predict that the top quark interactions will deviate significantly from those predicted by the Standard Model (SM). We present an analysis of the experimental restrictions on anomalous 4-fermion $e^+e^- t {\overline{t}}$ operators that is accurate to next-to-leading order (NLO) in both the electroweak and QCD interactions within the Standard Model Effective Field Theory framework. At NLO, there is sensitivity to an extended set of anomalous interactions beyond those probed at leading order. A comparison of current limits from electroweak precision observables, along with expected future limits from Drell-Yan and $t{\overline{t}}e^+e^-$ production at the high luminosity LHC, from deep inelastic scattering at the EIC, and from projected sensitivities at the future FCC-ee and CEPC machines demonstrates that each of these programs extends the precision understanding of the interactions of top quarks.

$gg \to ZH$ : updated predictions at NLO QCD

We present state-of-the-art predictions for the inclusive cross section of gluon-initiated $ZH$ production, following the recommendations of the LHC Higgs Working Group. In particular, we include NLO QCD corrections, where the virtual corrections are obtained from the combination of a forward expansion and a high-energy expansion, and the real corrections are exact. The expanded results for the virtual corrections are compared in detail to full numerical results. The updated predictions show a reduction of the scale uncertainties to the level of 15%, and they include an estimate of the top-mass-scheme uncertainty.

Physics Briefing Book: Input for the 2026 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics

The European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) reflects the vision and presents concrete plans of the European particle physics community for advancing human knowledge in fundamental physics. The ESPP is updated every five-to-six years through a community-driven process. It commences with the submission of specific proposals and other input from the community at large, outlining projects envisioned for the near-, mid-, and long-term future. All submitted contributions are evaluated by the Physics Preparatory Group (PPG), and a preliminary analysis is presented at a Symposium meant to foster a broad community discussion on the scientific value and feasibility of the various ideas proposed. The outcomes of the analysis and the deliberations at the Symposium are synthesized in the current Briefing Book, which provides an important input in the deliberations of the Strategy recommendations by the European Strategy Group (ESG).

NLO SMEFT Electroweak Corrections to Higgs Decays to 4 Leptons in the Narrow Width Approximation

Some of the most precise measurements of Higgs boson couplings are from the Higgs decays to 4 leptons, where deviations from the Standard Model predictions can be quantified in the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). In this work, we present a complete next-to-leading order (NLO) SMEFT electroweak calculation of the rate for $H\rightarrow \ell^+\ell^- Z$ which we combine with the NLO SMEFT result for $Z\rightarrow\ell^+\ell^-$ to obtain the NLO rate for the $H\rightarrow$ 4 lepton process in the narrow width approximation. The NLO calculation provides sensitivity to a wide range of SMEFT operators that do not contribute to the rate at lowest order and demonstrates the importance of including correlations between the effects of different operators when extracting limits on SMEFT parameters. We show that the extraction of the Higgs tri-linear coupling from the decay $H\rightarrow \ell^+ \ell^- Z, \ Z\rightarrow \ell^+\ell^-$ in the narrow width approximation strongly depends on the contributions of other operators that first occur at NLO.

The Importance of Flavor in SMEFT Electroweak Precision Fits

Effective field theory tools are essential for exploring non-Standard Model physics at the LHC in the absence of the discovery of new light particles. Predictions for observables are typically made at the lowest order in the QCD and electroweak expansions in the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) and often ignore the effects of flavor. Here, we present results for electroweak precision observables (EWPOs)at the next-to-leading order QCD and electroweak expansions (NLO) of the SMEFT with an arbitrary flavor structure for the fermion operators. Numerical NLO SMEFT fits toEWPOs have a strong dependence on the assumed flavor structures and we demonstrate this using various popular assumptions for flavor symmetries.

Impact of NLO Weak SMEFT Corrections in $e^+e^- \rightarrow ZH$

We present results from a complete next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation of $e^+e^-\rightarrow ZH$ in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) framework, including all contributions from dimension-6 operators. At NLO, there are novel dependencies on CP violating parameters in the gauge sector, on modifications to the Higgs boson self-couplings, on alterations to the top quark Yukawa couplings, and on 4-fermion operators involving the electron and the top quark, among others. We show that including only the logarithms resulting from renormalization group scaling can produce misleading results, and further, we explicitly demonstrate the constraining power of combining measurements from different energy scales.

Higgs Decays to $ZZ$ and $Zγ$ in the SMEFT: an NLO analysis

We calculate the complete one-loop electroweak corrections to the inclusive $H\rightarrow ZZ$ and $H\rightarrow Zγ$ decays in the dimension-$6$ extension of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). The corrections to $H\rightarrow ZZ$ are computed for on-shell $Z$ bosons and are a precursor to the physical $H\rightarrow Z f {\overline{f}}$ calculation. We present compact numerical formulas for our results and demonstrate that the logarithmic contributions that result from the renormalization group evolution of the SMEFT coefficients are larger than the finite NLO contributions to the decay widths. As a by-product of our calculation, we obtain the first complete result for the finite corrections to $G_μ$ in the SMEFT.

Electron $g-2$ Foreshadowing Discoveries at FCC-ee

A future $e^+e^-$ circular collider (FCC-ee) may provide a unique probe of the electron Yukawa coupling through Higgs boson production on resonance. Motivated by this exciting possibility, we examine a simple model which can result in $\mathcal{O}(10)$ modifications of the Higgs coupling to electrons. The model can also lead to deviations in the electron anomalous magnetic moment, $g_e-2$, which at present shows a $+2.2σ$ or $-3.7σ$ deviation, implied by differing precision determinations of the electromagnetic fine structure constant. The electron $g_e-2$ can be a forerunner for FCC-ee discoveries which, as we elucidate, may not be accessible to the high-luminosity LHC measurements. A simple extension of our model can also account for the current deviation in the muon $g_μ-2$.
