Art Beyond Semantics: Sheaf-Informed Contrastive Learning for Multi-Relational Representations

Understanding a painting is never a single act. Art historians may analyze the same work through concepts of style, iconography, or historical context, dimensions that are not interchangeable, and each carries distinct semantic relationships between the visual and the textual. Vision-Language Models (VLMs) like CLIP, which learn a single shared embedding space, collapse this richness into a single homogeneous alignment, thereby losing the multi-relational structure that defines art-historical reasoning. We introduce CANVAS (Contrastive Art-aware Network for Vision-Language Alignment with Sheaves), a framework for learning relation-aware multimodal representations inspired by sheaf theory. Each artwork is projected into multiple embeddings conditioned on the type of relation (i.e., the context), and a novel contrastive loss encodes contextual information during training, with no dependency on external data at inference. We evaluate on three newly introduced benchmarks of artworks for multi-relational art understanding: WikiArt+, derived from WikiArt and Wikipedia, HertzianaDP, from the Bibliotheca Hertziana collection, and SemArt+, refined from the SemArt dataset. In multimodal retrieval and art understanding, CANVAS outperforms the baselines, supporting the view that multi-relational alignment is not just theoretically motivated but also practically essential.

I Was Scrolling and Then I Saw a Pregnant Strawberry

AI minidramas (also known as fruit dramas) are short, algorithmically distributed generative AI video series featuring anthropomorphized characters that have recently emerged as a widespread phenomenon on social media platforms. This paper argues that despite their seemingly innocuous aesthetic, these videos reproduce deeply gendered narrative structures in which female characters are systematically associated with moral transgression, sexual betrayal, and reproductive capacity, and that several plots also encode the logic of racialization, i.e., the process by which visible bodily difference is morally loaded. Drawing on feminist film theory, critical race theory, and platform studies, it further argues that the generative AI aesthetic of these videos, characterized by softness, roundness, and visual cuteness, functions as a mechanism of aesthetic laundering, neutralizing the ideological weight of these narratives and enabling their circulation despite content moderation systems. This paper approaches these questions through personal observation and close reading, reflecting on the specific affordances of generative AI that make this phenomenon both possible and culturally consequential for the field of computational creativity.

Gender Artifacts from Art History to Text-to-Image Generation

Artistic styles are rooted in specific socio-historical contexts that encode social hierarchies, including distinct constructions of gender. Yet in AI research, style has long been treated as a surface-level visual property: a filter of color, brushstroke, and texture applied to otherwise content-neutral scenes. We introduce the first dataset to investigate the interplay between gender representation and style in both historical and generated images. StyleGender comprises 74k images spanning 19 artistic styles, comprising art historical images with style and gender annotations, T2I-generated images under controlled style and gender prompts, and a semantically aligned set enabling direct art history-to-generation comparison. By proposing two Set Gender Artifact (SGA) metrics (PixelSGA and MaskSGA), capturing gender signals at the pixel level and in compositional structure, we show that (1) gender representation shapes visual features across artistic styles, (2) style keywords carry these patterns into T2I generation, and (3) generative models tend to amplify gender artifacts beyond what is observed in historical sources.

ImageSet2Text: Describing Sets of Images through Text

In the era of large-scale visual data, understanding collections of images is a challenging yet important task. To this end, we introduce ImageSet2Text, a novel method to automatically generate natural language descriptions of image sets. Based on large language models, visual-question answering chains, an external lexical graph, and CLIP-based verification, ImageSet2Text iteratively extracts key concepts from image subsets and organizes them into a structured concept graph. We conduct extensive experiments evaluating the quality of the generated descriptions in terms of accuracy, completeness, and user satisfaction. We also examine the method's behavior through ablation studies, scalability assessments, and failure analyses. Results demonstrate that ImageSet2Text combines data-driven AI and symbolic representations to reliably summarize large image collections for a wide range of applications.

An Art-centric perspective on AI-based content moderation of nudity

At a time when the influence of generative Artificial Intelligence on visual arts is a highly debated topic, we raise the attention towards a more subtle phenomenon: the algorithmic censorship of artistic nudity online. We analyze the performance of three "Not-Safe-For-Work'' image classifiers on artistic nudity, and empirically uncover the existence of a gender and a stylistic bias, as well as evident technical limitations, especially when only considering visual information. Hence, we propose a multi-modal zero-shot classification approach that improves artistic nudity classification. From our research, we draw several implications that we hope will inform future research on this topic.

Exploring the Boundaries of Content Moderation in Text-to-Image Generation

This paper analyzes the community safety guidelines of five text-to-image (T2I) generation platforms and audits five T2I models, focusing on prompts related to the representation of humans in areas that might lead to societal stigma. While current research primarily focuses on ensuring safety by restricting the generation of harmful content, our study offers a complementary perspective. We argue that the concept of safety is difficult to define and operationalize, reflected in a discrepancy between the officially published safety guidelines and the actual behavior of the T2I models, and leading at times to over-censorship. Our findings call for more transparency and an inclusive dialogue about the platforms' content moderation practices, bearing in mind their global cultural and social impact.

Racial Bias in the Beautyverse

This short paper proposes a preliminary and yet insightful investigation of racial biases in beauty filters techniques currently used on social media. The obtained results are a call to action for researchers in Computer Vision: such biases risk being replicated and exaggerated in the Metaverse and, as a consequence, they deserve more attention from the community.

OpenFilter: A Framework to Democratize Research Access to Social Media AR Filters

Augmented Reality or AR filters on selfies have become very popular on social media platforms for a variety of applications, including marketing, entertainment and aesthetics. Given the wide adoption of AR face filters and the importance of faces in our social structures and relations, there is increased interest by the scientific community to analyze the impact of such filters from a psychological, artistic and sociological perspective. However, there are few quantitative analyses in this area mainly due to a lack of publicly available datasets of facial images with applied AR filters. The proprietary, close nature of most social media platforms does not allow users, scientists and practitioners to access the code and the details of the available AR face filters. Scraping faces from these platforms to collect data is ethically unacceptable and should, therefore, be avoided in research. In this paper, we present OpenFilter, a flexible framework to apply AR filters available in social media platforms on existing large collections of human faces. Moreover, we share FairBeauty and B-LFW, two beautified versions of the publicly available FairFace and LFW datasets and we outline insights derived from the analysis of these beautified datasets.

AI-based artistic representation of emotions from EEG signals: a discussion on fairness, inclusion, and aesthetics

While Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies are being progressively developed, artists and researchers are investigating their role in artistic practices. In this work, we present an AI-based Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) in which humans and machines interact to express feelings artistically. This system and its production of images give opportunities to reflect on the complexities and range of human emotions and their expressions. In this discussion, we seek to understand the dynamics of this interaction to reach better co-existence in fairness, inclusion, and aesthetics.
