On Waring rank jumps via critical rank-one approximations

We investigate whether eigenvectors, also known as critical rank-one approximations, of a symmetric tensor can be used to increase or decrease its Waring rank. First, we study the variety of degree-d rank-r forms which admit an eigenvector as part of a minimal Waring decomposition. In the case of binary forms, we show that this is of codimension-one in the r-th secant variety of the rational normal curve. On the other hand, we prove that for any binary form of rank less than (d+1)/2 (subgeneric), any eigenvector increases the rank. Additionally, when the degree is odd, the same holds for generic forms of generic rank. Our approach employs the strict relation between the apolar action and the Bombieri-Weyl product.

Some Taylor varieties with null Hessian

Taylor varieties $\mathcal{T}^n_{d,e,m}$ arise from Taylor expansion of rational functions in $n$ variables. Among them, we look for non-defective hypersurfaces. We prove that the cases $n=2$ and $m=d+2$ give new examples of hypersurfaces with identically null Hessian.

On the strong base locus of a projective variety

We introduce and study the base locus and the strong base locus of a projective variety X. The base locus of X parametrizes configurations of smooth points of X where the span of the tangent spaces of X at these points intersects X at some additional smooth point. The strong base locus parametrizes configurations of smooth points of X for which the span of the tangent spaces of X at the given configuration contains the entire tangent space at an additional point. These notions originate from the study of base loci of tangential projections, are strictly related to interpolation problems with double points in special position, and provide a natural framework to study tangential contact for nongeneral points. We give first properties and explore connections with Terracini loci and with the concept of identifiability. We focus on tensor-related varieties and characterize the nonemptiness of base loci and strong base loci for Veronese and Segre-Veronese varieties.

Path signatures of ODE solutions

The signature of a path is a sequence of tensors which allows to uniquely reconstruct the path. By employing the geometric theory of nonlinear systems of ordinary differential equations, we find necessary and sufficient algebraic conditions on the signature tensors of a path to be a solution of a given system of ODEs. As an application, we describe in detail the systems of ODEs that describe the trajectories of a vector field, in particular a linear and Hamiltonian one.

Computation of dominant ideals

We consider the problem of determining whether a monomial ideal is dominant. This property is critical for determining for which monomial ideals the Taylor resolution is minimal. We first analyze dominant ideals with a fixed least common multiple of generators using combinatorial methods. Then, we adopt a probabilistic approach via the \er\ type model, examining both homogeneous and non-homogeneous cases. This model offers an efficient alternative to exhaustive enumeration, allowing the study of dominance through small random samples, even in high-dimensional settings.

Decomposing Tensor Spaces via Path Signatures

The signature of a path is a sequence of tensors whose entries are iterated integrals, playing a key role in stochastic analysis and applications. The set of all signature tensors at a particular level gives rise to the universal signature variety. We show that the parametrization of this variety induces a natural decomposition of the tensor space via representation theory, and connect this to the study of path invariants. We also reveal certain constraints that apply to the rank and symmetry of a signature tensor.

Rank and symmetries of signature tensors

The signature of a path is a sequence of tensors which allows to uniquely reconstruct the path. In this paper we propose a systematic study of basic properties of signature tensors, starting from their rank, symmetries and conciseness. We prove a sharp upper bound on the rank of signature tensors of piecewise linear paths. We show that there are no skew-symmetric signature tensors of order three or more, and we also prove that specific instances of partial symmetry can only happen for tensors of order three. Finally, we give a simple geometric characterization of paths whose signature tensors are not concise.

Decomposition loci of tensors

The decomposition locus of a tensor is the set of rank-one tensors appearing in a minimal tensor-rank decomposition of the tensor. For tensors lying on the tangential variety of any Segre variety, but not on the variety itself, we show that the decomposition locus consists of all rank-one tensors except the tangency point only. We also explicitly compute decomposition loci of all tensors belonging to tensor spaces with finitely many orbits with respect to the action of product of general linear groups.

Degree of the subspace variety

Subspace varieties are algebraic varieties whose elements are tensors with bounded multilinear rank. In this paper, we compute their degrees by computing their volumes.

Geometry of first nonempty Terracini loci

After a few results on curves, we characterize the smallest nonempty Terracini loci of Veronese and Segre-Veronese varieties. For del Pezzo surfaces, we give a full description of the Terracini loci. Moreover, we present an algorithm to explicitly compute the Terracini loci of a given variety.

Average degree of the essential variety

The essential variety is an algebraic subvariety of dimension $5$ in real projective space $\mathbb R\mathrm P^{8}$ which encodes the relative pose of two calibrated pinhole cameras. The $5$-point algorithm in computer vision computes the real points in the intersection of the essential variety with a linear space of codimension $5$. The degree of the essential variety is $10$, so this intersection consists of 10 complex points in general. We compute the expected number of real intersection points when the linear space is random. We focus on two probability distributions for linear spaces. The first distribution is invariant under the action of the orthogonal group $\mathrm{O}(9)$ acting on linear spaces in $\mathbb R\mathrm P^{8}$. In this case, the expected number of real intersection points is equal to $4$. The second distribution is motivated from computer vision and is defined by choosing 5 point correspondences in the image planes $\mathbb R\mathrm P^2\times \mathbb R\mathrm P^2$ uniformly at random. A Monte Carlo computation suggests that with high probability the expected value lies in the interval $(3.95 - 0.05,\ 3.95 + 0.05)$.

The symmetric geometric rank of symmetric tensors

Inspired by recent work of Kopparty-Moshkovitz-Zuiddam and motivated by problems in combinatorics and hypergraphs, we introduce the notion of the symmetric geometric rank of a symmetric tensor. This quantity is equal to the codimension of the singular locus of the hypersurface associated to the tensor. We first derive fundamental properties of the symmetric geometric rank. Then, we study the space of symmetric tensors of prescribed symmetric geometric rank, which are spaces of homogeneous polynomials whose corresponding hypersurfaces have a singular locus of bounded codimension.

Identifiability of rank-3 tensors

Rank-2 and rank-3 tensors are almost all identifiable with only few exceptions. We classify them all together with the dimensions and the structures of all the sets evincing the rank.
