Ricci flow and the determinant of the Laplacian on non-compact surfaces

On compact surfaces with or without boundary, Osgood, Phillips and Sarnak proved that the maximum of the determinant of the Laplacian within a conformal class of metrics with fixed area occurs at a metric of constant curvature and, for negative Euler characteristic, exhibited a flow from a given metric to a constant curvature metric along which the determinant increases. The aim of this paper is to perform a similar analysis for the determinant of the Laplacian on a non-compact surface whose ends are asymptotic to hyperbolic funnels or cusps. In that context, we show that the Ricci flow converges to a metric of constant curvature and that the determinant increases along this flow.

Some index formulae on the moduli space of stable parabolic vector bundles

We study natural families of d-bar operators on the moduli space of stable parabolic vector bundles. Applying a families index theorem for hyperbolic cusp operators from our previous work, we find formulae for the Chern characters of the associated index bundles. The contributions from the cusps are explicitly expressed in terms of the Chern characters of natural vector bundles related to the parabolic structure. We show that our result implies formulae for the Chern classes of the associated determinant bundles consistent with a result of Takhtajan and Zograf.

Compactness of relatively isospectral sets of surfaces via conformal surgeries

We introduce a notion of relative isospectrality for surfaces with boundary having possibly non-compact ends either conformally compact or asymptotic to cusps. We obtain a compactness result for such families via a conformal surgery that allows us to reduce to the case of surfaces hyperbolic near infinity recently studied by Borthwick and Perry, or to the closed case by Osgood, Phillips and Sarnak if there are only cusps.

The signature package on Witt spaces

In this paper we prove a variety of results about the signature operator on Witt spaces. First, we give a parametrix construction for the signature operator on any compact, oriented, stratified pseudomanifold X which satisfies the Witt condition. This construction, which is inductive over the `depth' of the singularity, is then used to show that the signature operator is essentially self-adjoint and has discrete spectrum of finite multiplicity, so that its index -- the analytic signature of X -- is well-defined. This provides an alternate approach to some well-known results due to Cheeger. We then prove some new results. By coupling this parametrix construction to a C*_rΓ-Mishchenko bundle associated to any Galois covering of X with covering group Γ, we prove analogues of the same analytic results, from which it follows that one may define an analytic signature index class as an element of the K-theory of C*_rΓ. We go on to establish in this setting and for this class the full range of conclusions which sometimes goes by the name of the signature package. In particular, we prove a new and purely topological theorem, asserting the stratified homotopy invariance of the higher signatures of X, defined through the homology L-class of X, whenever the rational assembly map K_* (BΓ)\otimes\bbQ \to K_*(C*_r Γ)\otimes \bbQ is injective.

Inverse Boundary Problems for Systems in Two Dimensions

We prove identification of coefficients up to gauge by Cauchy data at the boundary for elliptic systems on oriented compact surfaces with boundary or domains of $\mathbb{C}$. In the geometric setting, we fix a Riemann surface with boundary, and consider both a Dirac-type operator plus potential acting on sections of a Clifford bundle and a connection Laplacian plus potential (i.e. Schrödinger Laplacian with external Yang-Mills field) acting on sections of a Hermitian bundle. In either case we show that the Cauchy data determines both the connection and the potential up to a natural gauge transformation: conjugation by an endomorphism of the bundle which is the identity at the boundary. For domains of $\mathbb{C}$, we recover zeroth order terms up to gauge from Cauchy data at the boundary in first order elliptic systems.

Nonlinear quasimodes near elliptic periodic geodesics

We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on a compact manifold near an elliptic periodic geodesic. Using a geometric optics construction, we construct quasimodes to a nonlinear stationary problem which are highly localized near the periodic geodesic. We show the nonlinear Schrödinger evolution of such a quasimode remains localized near the geodesic, at least for short times.

Relative Chern character, boundaries and index formulae

For three classes of elliptic pseudodifferential operators on a compact manifold with boundary which have `geometric K-theory', namely the `transmission algebra' introduced by Boutet de Monvel, the `zero algebra' introduced by Mazzeo and the `scattering algebra' from [MR95k:58168] we give explicit formulae for the Chern character of the index bundle in terms of the symbols (including normal operators at the boundary) of a Fredholm family of fibre operators. This involves appropriate descriptions, in each case, of the cohomology with compact supports in the interior of the total space of a vector bundle over a manifold with boundary in which the Chern character, mapping from the corresponding realization of K-theory, naturally takes values.

Fredholm realizations of elliptic symbols on manifolds with boundary II: fibered boundary

We consider two calculi of pseudodifferential operators on manifolds with fibered boundary: Mazzeo's edge calculus, which has as local model the operators associated to products of closed manifolds with asymptotically hyperbolic spaces, and the phi calculus of Mazzeo and the second author, which is similarly modeled on products of closed manifolds with asymptotically Euclidean spaces. We construct an adiabatic calculus of operators interpolating between them, and use this to compute the `smooth' K-theory groups of the edge calculus, determine the existence of Fredholm quantizations of elliptic symbols, and establish a families index theorem in K-theory.

Resolution of smooth group actions

A refined form of the `Folk Theorem' that a smooth action by a compact Lie group can be (canonically) resolved, by iterated blow up, to have unique isotropy type is proved in the context of manifolds with corners. This procedure is shown to capture the simultaneous resolution of all isotropy types in a `resolution structure' consisting of equivariant iterated fibrations of the boundary faces. This structure projects to give a similar resolution structure for the quotient. In particular these results apply to give a canonical resolution of the radial compactification, to a ball, of any finite dimensional representation of a compact Lie group; such resolutions of the normal action of the isotropy groups appear in the boundary fibers in the general case.

Fredholm realizations of elliptic symbols on manifolds with boundary

We show that the existence of a Fredholm element of the zero calculus of pseudodifferential operators on a compact manifold with boundary with a given elliptic symbol is determined, up to stability, by the vanishing of the Atiyah-Bott obstruction. It follows that, up to small deformations and stability, the same symbols have Fredholm realizations in the zero calculus, in the scattering calculus and in the transmission calculus of Boutet de Monvel.

The signature package on Witt spaces, II. Higher signatures

This is a sequel to the paper "The signature package on Witt spaces, I. Index classes" by the same authors. In the first part we investigated, via a parametrix construction, the regularity properties of the signature operator on a stratified Witt pseudomanifold, proving, in particular, that one can define a K-homology signature class. We also established the existence of an analytic index class for the signature operator twisted by a C^*_rΓMischenko bundle and proved that the K-homology signature class is mapped to the signature index class by the assembly map. In this paper we continue our study, showing that the signature index class is invariant under rational Witt bordisms and stratified homotopies. We are also able to identify this analytic class with the topological analogue of the Mischenko symmetric signature recently defined by Banagl. Finally, we define Witt-Novikov higher signatures and show that our analytic results imply a purely topological theorem, namely that the Witt-Novikov higher signatures are stratified homotopy invariants if the assembly map in K-theory is rationally injective.

The signature package on Witt spaces, I. Index classes

We give a parametrix construction for the signature operator on any compact, oriented, stratified pseudomanifold X which satisfies the Witt condition. This construction is inductive. It is then used to show that the signature operator is essentially self-adjoint and has discrete spectrum of finite multiplicity, so that its index -- the analytic signature of X -- is well-defined. We then show how to couple this construction to a C^*_r(Gamma) Mischenko bundle associated to any Galois covering of X with covering group Gamma. The appropriate analogues of these same results are then proved, and it follows that we may define an analytic signature class as an element of the K-theory of C^*_r(Gamma). In a sequel to this paper we establish in this setting the full range of conclusions for this class which sometimes goes by the name of the signature package.

A local families index formula for d-bar operators on punctured Riemann surfaces

Using heat kernel methods developed by Vaillant, a local index formula is obtained for families of d-bar operators on the Teichmuller universal curve of Riemann surfaces of genus g with n punctures. The formula also holds on the moduli space M{g,n} in the sense of orbifolds where it can be written in terms of Mumford-Morita-Miller classes. The degree two part of the formula gives the curvature of the corresponding determinant line bundle equipped with the Quillen connection, a result originally obtained by Takhtajan and Zograf.

Families index for manifolds with hyperbolic cusp singularities

Manifolds with fibered hyperbolic cusp metrics include hyperbolic manifolds with cusps and locally symmetric spaces of Q-rank one. We extend Vaillant's treatment of Dirac-type operators associated to these metrics by weaking the hypotheses on the boundary families through the use of Fredholm perturbations as in the family index theorem of Melrose and Piazza and by treating the index of families of such operators. We also extend the index theorem of Moroianu and Leichtnam-Mazzeo-Piazza to families of perturbed Dirac-type operators associated to fibered cusp metrics (sometimes known as fibered boundary metrics).

A renormalized index theorem for some complete asymptotically regular metrics: the Gauss-Bonnet theorem

The Gauss-Bonnet Theorem is studied for edge metrics as a renormalized index theorem. These metrics include the Poincaré-Einstein metrics of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Renormalization is used to make sense of the curvature integral and the dimensions of the $L^2$-cohomology spaces as well as to carry out the heat equation proof of the index theorem. For conformally compact metrics even mod $x^m$, the finite time supertrace of the heat kernel on conformally compact manifolds is shown to renormalize independently of the choice of special boundary defining function.

Renormalizing Curvature Integrals on Poincare-Einstein Manifolds

After analyzing renormalization schemes on a Poincaré-Einstein manifold, we study the renormalized integrals of scalar Riemannian invariants. The behavior of the renormalized volume is well-known, and we show any scalar Riemannian invariant renormalizes similarly. We consider characteristic forms and their behavior under a variation of the Poincaré-Einstein structure, and obtain, from the renormalized integral of the Pfaffian, an extension of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem.
