An underdog story: Re-emergence of a polar instability at high pressure in KNbO3

Ferroelectricity in perovskites is known to be suppressed by a moderate hydrostatic pressure. The notion that a polar instability should reappear in a higher pressure regime is well accepted theoretically but experiments have failed so far to provide a conclusive evidence for it. Here, we investigate a classical but comparatively underlooked ferroelectric perovskite KNbO3. We use single crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared and Raman spectroscopy and second-harmonic generation to explore the phase transition sequence at high pressures up to 63 GPa. We show that the ferroelectric instability manifests itself in the emergence of an incommensurate modulation of the perovskite structure that combines cation displacements and tilts of the oxygen octahedra. Soft modes associated to the tilts and the modulation are clearly observed along with persistent order-disorder signatures. This demonstrates the presence of the high-pressure polar instability in a lead-free perovskite in spite of the centrosymmetric character of all observed high-pressure phases.

Lattice dynamics and Raman spectrum of supertetragonal PbVO3

Lead vanadate PbVO3 is a polar crystal with a P4mm space group at ambient conditions. It is isostructural with the model soft-mode driven ferroelectric PbTiO3, but differs from it by the so-called 'supertetragonal' elongation of its unit cell. In this paper, we report a combined study of the lattice dynamics of PbVO3 by Raman spectroscopy at room temperature and first-principle calculations. All zone-center transverse optical (TO) phonon modes are identified by polarized, angle-dependent Raman spectroscopy and assigned as follows: E modes at 136, 269, 374 and 508 cm-1, A1 modes at 188, 429 and 874 cm-1 and B1 mode at 319 cm-1. The calculations confirm the experimental symmetry assignment and allow to obtain the longitudinal (LO) phonons wavenumbers. Besides, we analyze the mode eigenvectors in detail, in order to identify the atomic displacements associated with each mode and compare them with PbTiO3. In spite of their differences in chemistry and strain, the phonon eigenvectors are found to be remarkably comparable in both compounds. We discuss the position of the ferroelectric soft mode in PbVO3 as compared to PbTiO3. A sizeable splitting of the B1+E modes appears as a characteristic feature of supertetragonal phases. The peculiarity of the vanadyl V-O bond frequency in PbVO3 is also addressed.

Stability of the tetragonal phase of BaZrO3 under high pressure

In this paper, we revisit the high-pressure behavior of BaZrO3 by a combination of first-principle calculations, Raman spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction under high pressure. We confirm experimentally the cubic-to-tetragonal transition at 10 GPa and find no evidence for any other phase transition up to 45 GPa, the highest pressures investigated, at variance with past reports. We re-investigate phase stability with density functional theory considering not only the known tetragonal (I4/mcm) phase but also other potential antiferrodistortive candidates. This shows that the tetragonal phase becomes progressively more stable upon increasing pressure as compared to phases with more complex tilt systems. The possibility for a second transition to another tilted phase at higher pressures, and in particular to the very common orthorhombic Pnma structure, is therefore ruled out.

Structural properties and Raman spectra of columbite-type NiNb$_{2-x}$V$_x$O$_6$ synthesized under high pressure

The complete set of structural parameters of the new series of compounds NiNb$_{2-x}$V$_x$O$_6$ ($0\leq x \leq 2$) with the unusual columbite-type structure is presented here. In the samples containing vanadium, this crystalline structure was stabilized by synthesis in conditions of high pressure and high temperature. Here we report here the first Raman spectrum for the NiV$_2$O$_6$-\textsl{Pbcn} polymorph and extend the list of the previously observed modes for the NiNb$_2$O$_6$. The evolution of the vibrational Raman spectrum produced when the vanadium is substituted for niobium along the series is also presented and discussed. This evolution is interpreted by taking into account the changes in the local structural environment of the niobium/vanadium atoms and its influence over the nickel-oxygen bonds around them. The presence of vanadium atoms favors an increase of the symmetry in the arrangement of oxygen atoms around the nickel-ones; in counterpart, the vanadium is in an octahedral environment which is more distorted than that of the niobium. Because of these apparently subtle differences, the homogeneous distribution of vanadium in the solid solution NiNb$_{2-x}$V$_x$O$_6$ is not possible.

Jahn-Teller, polarity and insulator-to-metal transition in BiMnO3 at high pressure

The interaction of coexisting structural instabilities in multiferroic materials gives rise to intriguing coupling phenomena and extraordinarily rich phase diagrams, both in bulk materials and strained thin films. Here we investigate the multiferroic BiMnO3 with its peculiar 6s2 electrons and four interacting mechanisms: electric polarity, octahedra tilts, magnetism, and cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion. We have probed structural transitions under high pressure by synchrotron x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy up to 60 GPa. We show that BiMnO3 displays under pressure a rich sequence of five phases with a great variety of structures and properties, including a metallic phase above 53 GPa and, between 37 and 53 GPa, a strongly elongated monoclinic phase that allows ferroelectricity, which contradicts the traditional expectation that ferroelectricity vanishes under pressure. Between 7 and 37 GPa, the Pnma structure remains remarkably stable but shows a reduction of the Jahn-Teller distortion in a way that differs from the behavior observed in the archetypal orthorhombic Jahn-Teller distorted perovskite LaMnO3.

Multiple high-pressure phase transitions in BiFeO3

We investigate the high-pressure phase transitions in BiFeO3 by single crystal and powder x-ray diffraction, as well as single crystal Raman spectroscopy. Six phase transitions are reported in the 0-60 GPa range. At low pressures, up to 15 GPa, 4 transitions are evidenced at 4, 5, 7 and 11 GPa. In this range, the crystals display large unit cells and complex domain structures, which suggests a competition between complex tilt systems and possibly off-center cation displacements. The non polar Pnma phase remains stable over a large pressure range between 11 and 38 GPa, where the distortion (tilt angles) changes only little with pressure. The two high-pressure phase transitions at 38 and 48 GPa are marked by the occurence of larger unit cells and an increase of the distorsion away from the cubic parent perovskite cell. We find no evidence for a cubic phase at high pressure, nor indications that the structure tends to become cubic. The previously reported insulator-to-metal transition at 50 GPa appears to be symmetry breaking.

Structural investigation of LaAlO3 up to 63 GPa

We report a high-pressure single-crystal synchrotron x-ray diffraction on a LaAlO3 single crystal. The transition from rhombohedral to cubic at 14.8 GPa is confirmed by the loss of the superstructure reflections, whose intensity shows a linear pressure dependence, characteristic of a second-order transition. The crystal remains cubic up to 63 GPa, the highest pressure reached, which provides a confirmation over a very large pressure range of the general rules for the evolution of distortions of perovskites under pressure. We give the parameters of Birch-Murnaghan equations of state in the low- and high-pressure phases and discuss the evolution of the bulk modulus.

High-pressure phase transitions in BiFeO3: hydrostatic vs. non-hydrostatic conditions

We report high-pressure x-ray diffraction experiments on BiFeO3 (BFO) single crystals in diamond-anvil cells up to 14 GPa. Two data sets are compared, one in hydrostatic conditions, with helium used as pressure-transmitting medium, and the other in non-hydrostatic conditions, with silicon oil as pressure-transmitting medium. It is shown that the crystal undergoes different phase transitions in the two cases, highlighting the high sensitivity of BFO to non-hydrostatic stress. Consequences for the interpretation of high-pressure structural studies are discussed.

High-pressure investigations of CaTiO3 up to 60 GPa using X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy

In this work, we investigate calcium titanate (CaTiO3 - CTO) using X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy up to 60 and 55 GPa respectively. Both experiments show that the orthorhombic Pnma structure remains stable up to the highest pressures measured, in contradiction to ab-initio predictions. A fit of the compression data with a second-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state yields a bulk modulus K0 of 181.0(6) GPa. The orthorhombic distortion is found to increase slightly with pressure, in agreement with previous experiments at lower pressures and the general rules for the evolution of perovskites under pressure. High-pressure polarized Raman spectra also enable us to clarify the Raman mode assignment of CTO and identify the modes corresponding to rigid rotation of the octahedra, A-cation shifts and Ti-O bond stretching. The Raman signature is then discussed in terms of compression mechanisms.

Pressure-temperature phase diagram of SrTiO3 up to 53 GPa

We investigate the cubic to tetragonal phase transition in the pressure-temperature phase diagram of strontium titanate SrTiO3 (STO) by means of Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction on single crystal samples. X-ray diffraction experiments are performed at room temperature, 381 and 467 K up to 53 GPa, 30 GPa and 26 GPa respectively. The observation of the superstructure reflections in the X-ray patterns provides evidence that the crystal undergoes at all investigated temperatures a pressure-induced transition from cubic to the tetragonal I4/mcm phase, identical to the low-temperature phase. No other phase transition is observed at room temperature up to 53 GPa. Together with previously published data, our results allow us to propose a new linear phase boundary in the pressure-temperature phase diagram. The data are analyzed in the framework of the Landau theory of phase transitions. With a revised value of the coupling coefficient between the order parameter and the volume spontaneous strain, the model built from pressure-independent coefficients reproduces satisfactorily the boundary in the phase diagram, but fails at reflecting the more pronounced second-order character of the pressure-induced phase transition as compared to the temperature-induced transition. We propose a new Landau potential suitable for the description of the pressure-induced phase transition. Finally, we show that particular attention has to be paid to hydrostatic conditions in the study of the high-pressure phase transition in STO.
