Genus one Birkhoff sections for geodesic flows on orbifolds

For $\mathcal{O}$ a hyperbolic orientable 2-orbifold of genus $g$ with at most $2g+6$ conic points, we prove that the geodesic flow on the unitary tangent bundle$\mathrm{T}^1\mathcal{O}$ admits a Birkhoff section whose genus is one. Together with a result of Minakawa, this implies that this flow is almost equivalent to the suspension flow of the $(\begin{smallmatrix}2\&1\\1\&1\end{smallmatrix})$-map on the torus.

Almost equivalence of suspension Anosov flows

We provide a written proof of a result due to H. Minakawa, which states that all suspension Anosov flows generated by hyperbolic matrices with positive trace are pairwise almost equivalent. The proof relies on constructing, for any given suspension flow, a genus-one Birkhoff section whose first-return map has fewer fixed points than the original map. We improve Minakawa's result by explicitly calculating the first return map onto this section, which leads to explicit bounds on the distances between suspension Anosov flows within the graph of Anosov flows.

Left-handed geodesic flow of spheres of revolution

A flow on a 3-manifold is left-handed if any two ergodic invariant measures have negative linking number. We prove that on a 2-sphere of revolution whose curvature is $1/4$-pinched the geodesic flow is left-handed. Conversely, for every $δ\le 1/4$, we construct a 2-sphere whose curvature is $δ$-pinched and whose geodesic flow is not left-handed. This gives credit to a conjecture of Florio and Hryniewicz that $1/4$ is the optimal pinching constant for left-handedness among arbitrary positively curved 2-spheres.

Intersection norms on surfaces and Birkhoff cross sections

For every finite collection of curves on a surface, we define an associated (semi-)norm on the first homology group of the surface. The unit ball of the dual norm is the convex hull of its integer points. We give an interpretation of these points in terms of certain coorientations of the original collection of curves. Our main result is a classification statement: when the surface has constant curvature and the curves are geodesics, integer points in the interior of the dual unit ball classify isotopy classes of Birkhoff cross sections for the geodesic flow (on the unit tangent bundle to the surface) whose boundary is the symmetric lift of the collection of geodesics. Birkhoff cross sections in particular yield open-book decompositions of the unit tangent bundle.

La courbe en huit sur les sphères à pointes et le noeud de huit

We show that, in the unit tangent bundle of a hyperbolic orbisphere with cone points of order 3, 3, 4, the lift of the shortest periodic geodesic is homeomorphic to the complement of the figure-eight knot in the 3-sphere. The proof eventually relies on the computation of some linking numbers.

Hopf Arborescent Links, Minor Theory, and Decidability of the Genus Defect

While the problem of computing the genus of a knot is now fairly well understood, no algorithm is known for its four-dimensional variants, both in the smooth and in the topological locally flat category. In this article, we investigate a class of knots and links called Hopf arborescent links, which are obtained as the boundaries of some iterated plumbings of Hopf bands. We show that for such links, computing the genus defects, which measure how much the four-dimensional genera differ from the classical genus, is decidable. Our proof is non-constructive, and is obtained by proving that Seifert surfaces of Hopf arborescent links under a relation of minors defined by containment of their Seifert surfaces form a well-quasi-order.

Generic properties of $3$-dimensional Reeb flows: Birkhoff sections and entropy

In this paper we use broken book decompositions to study Reeb flows on closed $3$-manifolds. We show that if the Liouville measure of a nondegenerate contact form can be approximated by periodic orbits, then there is a Birkhoff section for the associated Reeb flow. In view of Irie's equidistribution theorem, this is shown to imply that the set of contact forms whose Reeb flows have a Birkhoff section contains an open and dense set in the $C^\infty$-topology. We also show that the set of contact forms whose Reeb flows have positive topological entropy is open and dense in the $C^\infty$-topology.

Complex vs convex Morse functions and geodesic open books

Suppose that $Σ$ is a closed and oriented surface equipped with a Riemannian metric. In the literature, there are three seemingly distinct constructions of open books on the unit (co)tangent bundle of $Σ$, having complex, contact, and dynamical flavors, respectively. Each one of these constructions is based on either an admissible divide or an ordered Morse function on $Σ$. We show that the resulting open books are pairwise isotopic provided that the ordered Morse function is adapted to the admissible divide on $Σ$. Moreover, we observe that if $Σ$ has positive genus, then none of these open books are planar and furthermore, we determine the only cases when they have genus one pages.

On the existence of supporting broken book decompositions for contact forms in dimension 3

We prove that in dimension 3 every nondegenerate contact form is carried by a broken book decomposition. As an application we get that if M is a closed irreducible oriented 3-manifold that is not a graph manifold, for example a hyperbolic manifold, then every nondegenerate Reeb vector field on M has positive topological entropy. Moreover, we obtain that on a closed 3-manifold, every nondegenerate Reeb vector field has either two or infinitely many periodic orbits, and two periodic orbits are possible only on the sphere or on a lens space.

Minor theory for quasipositive surfaces

The set of quasipositive surfaces is closed under incompressible inclusion. We prove that the induced order on fibre surfaces of positive braid links is almost a well-quasi-order. When restricting to quasipositive surfaces containing a fixed root of a full twist, we get an actual well-quasi-order.

Vector fields and genus in dimension 3

Given a flow on a 3-dimensional integral homology sphere, we give a formula for the Euler characteristic of its transverse surfaces, in terms of boundary data only. We illustrate the formula with several examples, in particular with surfaces of low genus. As an application, we show that for a right-handed flow with an ergodic invariant measure, the genus is an asymptotic invariant of order 2 proportional to the helicity.

Divide monodromies and antitwists on surfaces

A divide on an orientable 2-orbifold gives rise to a fibration of the unit tangent bundle to the orbifold. We characterize the corresponding monodromies as exactly the products of a left-veering horizontal and a right-veering vertical antitwist with respect to a cylinder decomposition, where the notion of an antitwist is an orientation-reversing analogue of a multitwist. Many divide monodromies are pseudo-Anosov and we give plenty of examples. In particular, we show that there exist divide monodromies with stretch factor arbitrarily close to one, and give an example none of whose powers can be obtained by Penner's or Thurston's construction of pseudo-Anosov mapping classes. As a side product, we also get a new combinatorial construction of pseudo-Anosov mapping classes in terms of products of antitwists.

Minor theory for surfaces and divides of maximal signature

The paper is partially withdrawn: in its current form, Lemma 2.3 is false, so that our proof of Theorem A and Proposition B has an important gap. We were unable to fix it yet. Any help is most welcome. We prove that the restriction of surface minority to fiber surfaces of divides is a well-quasi-order. Here surface minority is the partial order on isotopy classes of surfaces embedded in the 3-space associated with incompressible subsurfaces. The proof relies on a refinement of the Robertson-Seymour Theorem that involves colored graphs embedded into the plane. Our result implies that every property of fiber surfaces of divides that is preserved by surface minority is characterized by a finite number of prohibited minors. For the signature to be equal to the first Betti number is such a property. We explicitly determine the corresponding prohibited minors. As an application we establish a correspondance between divide links of maximal signature and Dynkin diagrams.

Signature and concordance of positive knots

We derive a linear estimate of the signature of positive knots, in terms of their genus. As an application, we show that every knot concordance class contains at most finitely many positive knots.

Which geodesic flows are left-handed ?

We prove that the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle to a hyperbolic 2-orbifold is left-handed if and only if the orbifold is a sphere with three conic points. As a consequence, on the unit tangent bundle to a 3-conic sphere, the lift of every finite collection of closed geodesics that is zero in integral homology is the binding of an open book decomposition.

The trunkenness of a volume-preserving vector field

We construct a new invariant-the trunkenness-for volume-perserving vector fields on S^3 up to volume-preserving diffeomorphism. We prove that the trunkenness is independent from the helicity and that it is the limit of a knot invariant (called the trunk) computed on long pieces of orbits.

Coding of geodesics and Lorenz-like templates for some geodesic flows

We construct a template with two ribbons that describes the topology of all periodic orbits of the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle to any sphere with three cone points with hyperbolic metric. The construction relies on the existence of a particular coding with two letters for the geodesics on these orbifolds.
