Probing (topological) Floquet states through DC transport

We consider the differential conductance of a periodically driven system connected to infinite electrodes. We focus on the situation where the dissipation occurs predominantly in these electrodes. Using analytical arguments and a detailed numerical study we relate the differential conductances of such a system in two and three terminal geometries to the spectrum of quasi-energies of the Floquet operator. Moreover these differential conductances are found to provide an accurate probe of the existence of gaps in this quasi-energy spectrum, being quantized when topological edge states occur within these gaps. Our analysis opens the perspective to describe the intermediate time dynamics of driven mesoscopic conductors as topological Floquet filters.

Construction and properties of a topological index for periodically driven time-reversal invariant 2D crystals

We present mathematical details of the construction of a topological invariant for periodically driven two-dimensional lattice systems with time-reversal symmetry and quasienergy gaps, which was proposed recently by some of us. The invariant is represented by a gap-dependent $\,\mathbb Z_2$-valued index that is simply related to the Kane-Mele invariants of quasienergy bands but contains an extra information. As a byproduct, we prove new expressions for the two-dimensional Kane-Mele invariant relating the latter to Wess-Zumino amplitudes and the boundary gauge anomaly.

Topological index for periodically driven time-reversal invariant 2D systems

We define a new $Z_2$-valued index to characterize the topological properties of periodically driven two dimensional crystals when the time-reversal symmetry is enforced. This index is associated with a spectral gap of the evolution operator over one period of time. When two such gaps are present, the Kane-Mele index of the eigenstates with eigenvalues between the gaps is recovered as the difference of the gap indices. This leads to an expression for the Kane-Mele invariant in terms of the Wess-Zumino amplitude. We illustrate the relation of the new index to the edge states in finite geometries by numerically solving an explicit model on the square lattice that is periodically driven in a time-reversal invariant way.

Minimal conductivity, topological Berry winding and duality in three-band semimetals

The physics of massless relativistic quantum particles has recently arisen in the electronic properties of solids following the discovery of graphene. Around the accidental crossing of two energy bands, the electronic excitations are described by a Weyl equation initially derived for ultra-relativistic particles. Similar three and four band semimetals have recently been discovered in two and three dimensions. Among the remarkable features of graphene are the characterization of the band crossings by a topological Berry winding, leading to an anomalous quantum Hall effect, and a finite minimal conductivity at the band crossing while the electronic density vanishes. Here we show that these two properties are intimately related: this result paves the way to a direct measure of the topological nature of a semi-metal. By considering three band semimetals with a flat band in two dimensions, we find that only few of them support a topological Berry phase. The same semimetals are the only ones displaying a non vanishing minimal conductivity at the band crossing. The existence of both a minimal conductivity and a topological robustness originates from properties of the underlying lattice, which are encoded not by a symmetry of their Bloch Hamiltonian, but by a duality.

Engineering Quantum Anomalous Hall Plateaus and Anti-Chiral States with AC Fields

We investigate the AC electric field induced quantum anomalous Hall effect in honeycomb lattices and derive the full phase diagram for arbitrary field amplitude and phase polarization. We show how to induce anti-chiral edge modes as well as topological phases characterized by a Chern number larger than $1$ by means of suitable drivings. In particular, we find that the Chern number develops plateaus as a function of the frequency, providing an time-dependent analogue to the ones in the quantum Hall effect.

Merging of Dirac points and Floquet topological transitions in AC driven graphene

We investigate the effect of an in-plane AC electric field coupled to electrons in the honeycomb lattice and show that it can be used to manipulate the Dirac points of the electronic structure. We find that the position of the Dirac points can be controlled by the amplitude and the polarization of the field for high frequency drivings, providing a new platform to achieve their merging, a topological transition which has not been observed yet in electronic systems. Importantly, for lower frequencies we find that the multi-photon absorptions and emissions processes yield the creation of additional pairs of Dirac points. This provides an additional method to achieve the merging transition by just tuning the frequency of the driving. Our approach, based on Floquet formalism, is neither restricted to specific choice of amplitude or polarization of the field, nor to a low energy approximation for the Hamiltonian.

Z2 peak of noise correlations in a quantum spin Hall insulator

We investigate the current noise correlations at a quantum point contact in a quantum spin Hall structure, focusing on the effect of a weak magnetic field in the presence of disorder. For the case of two equally biased terminals we discover a robust peak: the noise correlations vanish at $B = 0 $ and are negative for $B\not = 0 $. We find that the character of this peak is intimately related to the interplay between time reversal symmetry and the helical nature of the edge states and call it the Z2 peak.

Magnetic field induced localization in 2D topological insulators

Localization of the helical edge states in quantum spin Hall insulators requires breaking time reversal invariance. In experiments this is naturally implemented by applying a weak magnetic field B. We propse a model based on scattering theory that describes the localization of helical edge states due to coupling to random magnetic fluxes. We find that the localization length is proportional to B^{2} when B is small, and saturates to a constant when B is sufficiently large. We estimate especially the localization length for the HgTe/CdTe quantum wells with known experimental parameters.

Topological Weyl Semi-metal from a Lattice Model

We define and study a three dimensional lattice model which displays a Weyl semi-metallic phase. This model consists of coupled layers of quantum (anomalous) Hall insulators. The Weyl semi-metallic phase appears between a resulting quantum Hall insulating phase and a normal insulating phase. Weyl fermions in this Weyl semi-metal, similar to Dirac fermions in graphene, have their lattice pseudo-spin locked to their momenta. We investigate surface states and Fermi arcs, and their evolution for different phases, by exactly diagonalizing the lattice model as well as by analyzing their topological origins.

WKB analysis of edge states in graphene in a strong magnetic field

We investigate the fine structure of the edge states energy spectrum for zigzag and armchair ribbons of graphene in a strong magnetic field. At low energy, the spectra can be described by an effective Schrodinger Hamiltonian with a double well potential, symmetric in the zigzag case and asymmetric in the armchair case. We develop a semiclassical formalism based on the WKB approximation to calculate analytically the energy spectrum for the two types of edges, including regions which were not studied earlier. Our results are in very good quantitative agreement with numerical calculations. This approach leads to a qualitative description of the spectra in terms of the quantization of unusual classical orbits in the real space.

Quantum oscillations and decoherence due to electron-electron interaction in metallic networks and hollow cylinders

We have studied the quantum oscillations of the conductance for arrays of connected mesoscopic metallic rings, in the presence of an external magnetic field. Several geometries have been considered: a linear array of rings connected with short or long wires compared to the phase coherence length, square networks and hollow cylinders. Compared to the well-known case of the isolated ring, we show that for connected rings, the winding of the Brownian trajectories around the rings is modified, leading to a different harmonics content of the quantum oscillations. We relate this harmonics content to the distribution of winding numbers. We consider the limits where coherence length $L_φ$ is small or large compared to the perimeter $L$ of each ring constituting the network. In the latter case, the coherent diffusive trajectories explore a region larger than $L$, whence a network dependent harmonics content. Our analysis is based on the calculation of the spectral determinant of the diffusion equation for which we have a simple expression on any network. It is also based on the hypothesis that the time dependence of the dephasing between diffusive trajectories can be described by an exponential decay with a single characteristic time $τ_φ$ (model A) . At low temperature, decoherence is limited by electron-electron interaction, and can be modelled in a one-electron picture by the fluctuating electric field created by other electrons (model B). It is described by a functional of the trajectories and thus the dependence on geometry is crucial. Expressions for the magnetoconductance oscillations are derived within this model and compared to the results of model A. It is shown that they involve several temperature-dependent length scales.
