H2 molecule in strong magnetic fields

The Pauli-Hamiltonian of a molecule with fixed nuclei in a strong constant magnetic field is asymptotic, in norm-resolvent sense, to an effective Hamiltonian which has the form of a multi-particle Schrödinger operator with interactions given by one-dimensional δ-potentials. We study this effective Hamiltonian in the case of the H2 -molecule and establish existence of the ground state. We also show that the inter-nuclear equilibrium distance tends to 0 as the field-strength tends to infinity.

Adiabatic non-equilibrium steady states in the partition free approach

Consider a small sample coupled to a finite number of leads, and assume that the total (continuous) system is at thermal equilibrium in the remote past. We construct a non-equilibrium steady state (NESS) by adiabatically turning on an electrical bias between the leads. The main mathematical challenge is to show that certain adiabatic wave operators exist, and to identify their strong limit when the adiabatic parameter tends to zero. Our NESS is different from, though closely related with the NESS provided by the Jak{\v s}i{ć}-Pillet-Ruelle approach. Thus we partly settle a question asked by Caroli {\it et al} in 1971 regarding the (non)equivalence between the partitioned and partition-free approaches.

On the spectrum of a bent chain graph

We study Schrödinger operators on an infinite quantum graph of a chain form which consists of identical rings connected at the touching points by $δ$-couplings with a parameter $α\in\R$. If the graph is "straight", i.e. periodic with respect to ring shifts, its Hamiltonian has a band spectrum with all the gaps open whenever $α\ne 0$. We consider a "bending" deformation of the chain consisting of changing one position at a single ring and show that it gives rise to eigenvalues in the open spectral gaps. We analyze dependence of these eigenvalues on the coupling $α$ and the "bending angle" as well as resonances of the system coming from the bending. We also discuss the behaviour of the eigenvalues and resonances at the edges of the spectral bands.

On the skeleton method and an application to a quantum scissor

In the spectral analysis of few one dimensional quantum particles interacting through delta potentials it is well known that one can recast the problem into the spectral analysis of an integral operator (the skeleton) living on the submanifold which supports the delta interactions. We shall present several tools which allow direct insight into the spectral structure of this skeleton. We shall illustrate the method on a model of a two dimensional quantum particle interacting with two infinitely long straight wires which cross one another at a certain angle : the quantum scissor.

On the energy growth of some periodically driven quantum systems with shrinking gaps in the spectrum

We consider quantum Hamiltonians of the form H(t)=H+V(t) where the spectrum of H is semibounded and discrete, and the eigenvalues behave as E_n~n^α, with 0<α<1. In particular, the gaps between successive eigenvalues decay as n^{α-1}. V(t) is supposed to be periodic, bounded, continuously differentiable in the strong sense and such that the matrix entries with respect to the spectral decomposition of H obey the estimate |V(t)_{m,n}|<=ε*|m-n|^{-p}max{m,n}^{-2γ} for m!=n where ε>0, p>=1 and γ=(1-α)/2. We show that the energy diffusion exponent can be arbitrarily small provided p is sufficiently large and εis small enough. More precisely, for any initial condition Ψ\in Dom(H^{1/2}), the diffusion of energy is bounded from above as _Ψ(t)=O(t^σ) where σ=α/(2\ceil{p-1}γ-1/2). As an application we consider the Hamiltonian H(t)=|p|^α+ε*v(θ,t) on L^2(S^1,dθ) which was discussed earlier in the literature by Howland.

Adiabatically switched-on electrical bias in continuous systems, and the Landauer-Buttiker formula

Consider a three dimensional system which looks like a cross-connected pipe system, i.e. a small sample coupled to a finite number of leads. We investigate the current running through this system, in the linear response regime, when we adiabatically turn on an electrical bias between leads. The main technical tool is the use of a finite volume regularization, which allows us to define the current coming out of a lead as the time derivative of its charge. We finally prove that in virtually all physically interesting situations, the conductivity tensor is given by a Landauer-B{ü}ttiker type formula.

On the stability of periodically time-dependent quantum systems

The main motivation of this article is to derive sufficient conditions for dynamical stability of periodically driven quantum systems described by a Hamiltonian H(t), i.e., conditions under which it holds sup_{t in R} | (psi(t),H(t) psi(t)) |<\infty where psi(t) denotes a trajectory at time t of the quantum system under consideration. We start from an analysis of the domain of the quasi-energy operator. Next we show, under certain assumptions, that if the spectrum of the monodromy operator U(T,0) is pure point then there exists a dense subspace of initial conditions for which the mean value of energy is uniformly bounded in the course of time. Further we show that if the propagator admits a differentiable Floquet decomposition then || H(t) psi(t) || is bounded in time for any initial condition psi(0), and one employs the quantum KAM algorithm to prove the existence of this type of decomposition for a fairly large class of H(t). In addition, we derive bounds uniform in time on transition probabilities between different energy levels, and we also propose an extension of this approach to the case of a higher order of differentiability of the Floquet decomposition. The procedure is demonstrated on a solvable example of the periodically time-dependent harmonic oscillator.

Effective models for excitons in carbon nanotubes

We analyse the low lying spectrum of a model of excitons in carbon nanotubes. Consider two particles with an attractive Coulomb self-interaction, placed on an infinitely long cylinder. If the cylinder radius becomes small, the low lying spectrum is well described by a one-dimensional effective Hamiltonian which is exactly solvable.

Effective Hamiltonians for atoms in very strong magnetic fields

We propose three effective Hamiltonians which approximate atoms in very strong homogeneous magnetic fields $B$ modelled by the Pauli Hamiltonian, with fixed total angular momentum with respect to magnetic field axis. All three Hamiltonians describe $N$ electrons and a fixed nucleus where the Coulomb interaction has been replaced by $B$-dependent one-dimensional effective (vector valued) potentials but without magnetic field. Two of them are solvable in at least the one electron case. We briefly sketch how these Hamiltonians can be used to analyse the bottom of the spectrum of such atoms.

Absolute continuity in periodic thin tubes and strongly coupled leaky wires

Using a perturbative argument, we show that in any finite region containing the lowest transverse eigenmode, the spectrum of a periodically curved smooth Dirichlet tube in two or three dimensions is absolutely continuous provided the tube is sufficiently thin. In a similar way we demonstrate absolute continuity at the bottom of the spectrum for generalized Schrödinger operators with a sufficiently strongly attractive $δ$ interaction supported by a periodic curve in $\mathbb{R}^d, d=2,3$.

Bound States in Curved Quantum Layers

We consider a nonrelativistic quantum particle constrained to a curved layer of constant width built over a non-compact surface embedded in $R^3$. We suppose that the latter is endowed with the geodesic polar coordinates and that the layer has the hard-wall boundary. Under the assumption that the surface curvatures vanish at infinity we find sufficient conditions which guarantee the existence of geometrically induced bound states.

Open quantum dots: resonances from perturbed symmetry and bound states in strong magnetic fields

We discuss the Noeckel model of an open quantum dot, i.e., a straight hard-wall channel with a potential well. If this potential depends on the longitudinal variable only, there are embedded eigenvalues which turn into resonances if the symmetry is violated, either by applying a magnetic field or by deformation of the well. For a weak symmetry breaking we derive the perturbative expansion of these resonances. We also deduce a sufficient condition under which the discrete spectrum of such a system (without any symmetry) survives the presence of a strong magnetic field. It is satisfied, in particular, if the dot potential is purely attractive.

Stability of driven systems with growing gaps, Quantum rings and Wannier ladders

We consider a quantum particle in a periodic structure submitted to a constant external electromotive force. The periodic background is given by a smooth potential plus singular point interactions and has the property that the gaps between its bands are growing with the band index. We prove that the spectrum is pure point--i.e. trajectories of wave packets lie in compact sets in Hilbert space-- if the Bloch frequency is non-resonant with the frequency of the system and satisfies a Diophantine type estimate, or if it is resonant. Furthermore it is shown that the KAM method employed in the non-resonant case produces uniform bounds on the growth of energy for driven systems.
