Measure solutions to the conservative renewal equation

We prove the existence and uniqueness of measure solutions to the conservative renewal equation and analyze their long time behavior. The solutions are built by using a duality approach. This construction is well suited to apply the Doeblin's argument which ensures the exponential relaxation of the solutions to the equilibrium.

Global stability for the prion equation with general incidence

We consider the so-called prion equation with the general incidence term introduced in [Greer et al., 2007], and we investigate the stability of the steady states. The method is based on the reduction technique introduced in [Gabriel, 2012]. The argument combines a recent spectral gap result for the growth-fragmentation equation in weighted $L^1$ spaces and the analysis of a nonlinear system of three ordinary differential equations.

Non-linear eigenvalue problems arising from growth maximization of positive linear dynamical systems

We study a growth maximization problem for a continuous time positive linear system with switches. This is motivated by a problem of mathematical biology (modeling growth-fragmentation processes and the PMCA protocol). We show that the growth rate is determined by the non-linear eigenvalue of a max-plus analogue of the Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius operator, or equivalently, by the ergodic constant of a Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) partial differential equation, the solutions or subsolutions of which yield Barabanov and extremal norms, respectively. We exploit contraction properties of order preserving flows, with respect to Hilbert's projective metric, to show that the non-linear eigenvector of the operator, or the "weak KAM" solution of the HJ equation, does exist. Low dimensional examples are presented, showing that the optimal control can lead to a limit cycle.

Optimization of an Amplification Protocol for Misfolded Proteins by using Relaxed Control

We investigate an optimal control problem which arises in the optimization of an amplification technique for misfolded proteins. The improvement of this technique may play a role in the detection of prion diseases. The model consists in a linear system of differential equations with a nonlinear control. The appearance of oscillations in the numerical simulations is understood by using the Perron and Floquet eigenvalue theory for nonnegative irreductible matrices. Then to overcome the unsolvability of the optimal control, we relax the problem. In the two dimensional case we solve explicitely the optimal relaxed control problem when the final time is large enough.

The contribution of age structure to cell population responses to targeted therapeutics

Cells grown in culture act as a model system for analyzing the effects of anticancer compounds, which may affect cell behavior in a cell cycle position-dependent manner. Cell synchronization techniques have been generally employed to minimize the variation in cell cycle position. However, synchronization techniques are cumbersome and imprecise and the agents used to synchronize the cells potentially have other unknown effects on the cells. An alternative approach is to determine the age structure in the population and account for the cell cycle positional effects post hoc. Here we provide a formalism to use quantifiable age distributions from live cell microscopy experiments to parameterize an age-structured model of cell population response.

Self-similarity in a General Aggregation-Fragmentation Problem ; Application to Fitness Analysis

We consider the linear growth and fragmentation equation with general coefficients. Under suitable conditions, the first eigenvalue represents the asymptotic growth rate of solutions, also called \emph{fitness} or \emph{Malthus coefficient} in population dynamics ; it is of crucial importance to understand the long-time behaviour of the population. We investigate the dependency of the dominant eigenvalue and the corresponding eigenvector on the transport and fragmentation coefficients. We show how it behaves asymptotically as transport dominates fragmentation or \emph{vice versa}. For this purpose we perform suitable blow-up analysis of the eigenvalue problem in the limit of small/large growth coefficient (resp. fragmentation coefficient). We exhibit possible non-monotonic dependency on the parameters, conversely to what would have been conjectured on the basis of some simple cases.

The Shape of the Polymerization Rate in the Prion Equation

We consider a polymerization (fragmentation) model with size-dependent parameters involved in prion proliferation. Using power laws for the different rates of this model, we recover the shape of the polymerization rate using experimental data. The technique used is inspired from an article of Zampieri et al. where the fragmentation dependency on prion strains is investigated. Our improvement is to use power laws for the rates whereas Zampieri et al. used a constant polymerization coefficient and linear fragmentation.

High-order WENO scheme for Polymerization-type equations

Polymerization of proteins is a biochimical process involved in different diseases. Mathematically, it is generally modeled by aggregation-fragmentation-type equations. In this paper we consider a general polymerization model and propose a high-order numerical scheme to investigate the behavior of the solution. An important property of the equation is the mass conservation. The fifth-order WENO scheme is built to preserve the total mass of proteins along time.

Eigenelements of a General Aggregation-Fragmentation Model

We consider a linear integro-differential equation which arises to describe both aggregation-fragmentation processes and cell division. We prove the existence of a solution $(\lb,\U,ϕ)$ to the related eigenproblem. Such eigenelements are useful to study the long time asymptotic behaviour of solutions as well as the steady states when the equation is coupled with an ODE. Our study concerns a non-constant transport term that can vanish at $x=0,$ since it seems to be relevant to describe some biological processes like proteins aggregation. Non lower-bounded transport terms bring difficulties to find $a\ priori$ estimates. All the work of this paper is to solve this problem using weighted-norms.

Long-time Asymptotics for Nonlinear Growth-fragmentation Equations

We are interested in the long-time asymptotic behavior of growth-fragmentation equations with a nonlinear growth term. We present examples for which we can prove either the convergence to a steady state or conversely the existence of periodic solutions. Thanks the General Relative Entropy method applied to well chosen self-similar solutions, we show that the equation can "asymptotically" be reduced to a system of ODEs. Then stability results are proved by using a Lyapunov functional, and existence of periodic solutions are proved thanks to the Poincaré-Bendixon theorem or by Hopf bifurcation.

Fine asymptotics of profiles and relaxation to equilibrium for growth-fragmentation equations with variable drift rates

We are concerned with the long-time behavior of the growth-fragmentation equation. We prove fine estimates on the principal eigenfunctions of the growth-fragmentation operator, giving their first-order behavior close to 0 and $+\infty$. Using these estimates we prove a spectral gap result by following the technique in [Caceres, Canizo, Mischler 2011, JMPA], which implies that solutions decay to the equilibrium exponentially fast. The growth and fragmentation coefficients we consider are quite general, essentially only assumed to behave asymptotically like power laws.

Optimal growth for linear processes with affine control

We analyse an optimal control with the following features: the dynamical system is linear, and the dependence upon the control parameter is affine. More precisely we consider $\dot x_α(t) = (G + α(t) F)x_α(t)$, where $G$ and $F$ are $3\times 3$ matrices with some prescribed structure. In the case of constant control $α(t)\equiv α$, we show the existence of an optimal Perron eigenvalue with respect to varying $α$ under some assumptions. Next we investigate the Floquet eigenvalue problem associated to time-periodic controls $α(t)$. Finally we prove the existence of an eigenvalue (in the generalized sense) for the optimal control problem. The proof is based on the results by [Arisawa 1998, Ann. Institut Henri Poincaré] concerning the ergodic problem for Hamilton-Jacobi equations. We discuss the relations between the three eigenvalues. Surprisingly enough, the three eigenvalues appear to be numerically the same.
