Stability of Rayleigh-Jeans equilibria in the kinetic FPU equation

We study the nonlinear dynamics of the kinetic wave equation associated to the FPU problem and prove stability of the non-singular Rayleigh-Jeans equilibria. The lack of a spectral gap for the linearized problem leads to polynomial decay, which we are able to leverage to obtain nonlinear stability.

Standing and Traveling Waves in a Nonlinearly Dispersive Lattice Model

In the work of Colliander et al. (2010), a minimal lattice model was constructed describing the transfer of energy to high frequencies in the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation. In the present work, we present a systematic study of the coherent structures, both standing and traveling, that arise in the context of this model. We find that the nonlinearly dispersive nature of the model is responsible for standing waves in the form of discrete compactons. On the other hand, analysis of the dynamical features of the simplest nontrivial variant of the model, namely the dimer case, yields both solutions where the intensity is trapped in a single site and solutions where the intensity moves between the two sites, which suggests the possibility of moving excitations in larger lattices. Such excitations are also suggested by the dynamical evolution associated with modulational instability. Our numerical computations confirm this expectation, and we systematically construct such traveling states as exact solutions in lattices of varying size, as well as explore their stability. A remarkable feature of these traveling lattice waves is that they are of "antidark" type, i.e., they are mounted on top of a non-vanishing background. These studies shed light on the existence, stability and dynamics of such standing and traveling states in $1+1$ dimensions, and pave the way for exploration of corresponding configurations in higher dimensions.

Derivation of the kinetic wave equation for quadratic dispersive problems in the inhomogeneous setting

We examine the validity of the kinetic description of wave turbulence for a model quadratic equation. We focus on the space-inhomogeneous case, which had not been treated earlier; the space-homogeneous case is a simple variant. We determine nonlinearities for which the kinetic description holds, or might fail, up to an arbitrarily small polynomial loss of the kinetic time scale. More precisely, we focus on the convergence of the Dyson series, which is an expansion of the solution in terms of the random data.

On universality for the kinetic wave equation

On compact Riemannian manifolds with chaotic geometries, specifically those exhibiting the random wave model conjectured by Berry, we derive heuristically a homogeneous kinetic wave equation that is universal for all such manifolds.

$L^2$ to $L^p$ bounds for spectral projectors on the Euclidean two-dimensional torus

We consider spectral projectors associated to the Euclidean Laplacian on the two-dimensional torus, in the case where the spectral window is narrow. Bounds for their L2 to Lp operator norm are derived, extending the classical result of Sogge; a new question on the convolution kernel of the projector is introduced. The methods employed include l2 decoupling, small cap decoupling, and estimates of exponential sums.

Local Well-posedness for the Kinetic MMT Model

The MMT equation was proposed by Majda, McLaughlin and Tabak as a model to study wave turbulence. We focus on the kinetic equation associated to this Hamiltonian system, which is believed to give a way to predict turbulent spectra. We clarify the formulation of the problem, and we develop the local well-posedness theory for this equation. Our analysis uncovers a surprising nonlinear smoothing phenomenon.

On the derivation of the homogeneous kinetic wave equation for a nonlinear random matrix model

We consider a nonlinear system of ODEs, where the underlying linear dynamics are determined by a Hermitian random matrix ensemble. We prove that the leading order dynamics in the weakly nonlinear, infinite volume limit are determined by a solution to the corresponding kinetic wave equation on a non-trivial timescale. Our proof relies on estimates for Haar-distributed unitary matrices obtained from Weingarten calculus, which may be of independent interest.

L2 to Lp bounds for spectral projectors on thin intervals in Riemannian manifolds

Given a Riemannian manifold endowed with its Laplace-Beltrami operator, consider the associated spectral projector on a thin interval. As an operator from L2 to Lp, what is its operator norm? For a window of size 1, this question is fully answered by a celebrated theorem of Sogge, which applies to any manifold. For smaller windows, the global geometry of the manifold comes into play, and connections to a number of mathematical fields (such as Differential Geometry, Combinatorics, Number Theory) appear, but the problem remains mostly open. The aim of this article is to review known results, focusing on cases exhibiting symmetry and emphasizing harmonic analytic rather than microlocal methods.

Spectral projectors, resolvent, and Fourier restriction on the hyperbolic space

We develop a unified approach to proving $L^p-L^q$ boundedness of spectral projectors, the resolvent of the Laplace-Beltrami operator and its derivative on $\mathbb{H}^d.$ In the case of spectral projectors, and when $p$ and $q$ are in duality, the dependence of the implicit constant on $p$ is shown to be sharp. We also give partial results on the question of $L^p-L^q$ boundedness of the Fourier extension operator. As an application, we prove smoothing estimates for the free Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb{H}^d$ and a limiting absorption principle for the electromagnetic Schrödinger equation with small potentials.

Spectral projectors on hyperbolic surfaces

In this paper, we prove $L^2 \to L^p$ estimates, where $p>2$, for spectral projectors on a wide class of hyperbolic surfaces. More precisely, we consider projections in small spectral windows $[λ-η,λ+η]$ on geometrically finite hyperbolic surfaces of infinite volume. In the convex cocompact case, we obtain optimal bounds with respect to $λ$ and $η$, up to subpolynomial losses. The proof combines the resolvent bound of Bourgain-Dyatlov and improved estimates for the Schrödinger group (Strichartz and smoothing estimates) on hyperbolic surfaces.

Asymptotic Stability of Solitary Waves for One Dimensional Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations

We show global asymptotic stability of solitary waves of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation in space dimension 1. Furthermore, the radiation is shown to exhibit long range scattering if the nonlinearity is cubic at the origin, or standard scattering if it is higher order. We handle a general nonlinearity without any vanishing condition, requiring that the linearized operator around the solitary wave has neither nonzero eigenvalues, nor threshold resonances. Initial data are chosen in a neighborhood of the solitary waves in the natural space $H^1 \cap L^{2,1}$ (where the latter is the weighted $L^2$ space). The proof relies on the analysis of resonances as seen through the distorted Fourier transform, combined for the first time with modulation and renormalization techniques.

Quadratic Klein-Gordon equations with a potential in one dimension

This paper proposes a fairly general new point of view on the question of asymptotic stability of (topological) solitons. Our approach is based on the use of the distorted Fourier transform at the nonlinear level; it does not rely on Strichartz or virial estimates and is therefore able to treat low power nonlinearities (hence also non-localized solitons) and capture the global (in space and time) behavior of solutions. More specifically, we consider quadratic nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations with a potential in one space dimension. The potential is assumed to be regular, decaying, and either generic or exceptional (with some additional parity assumptions). Assuming that the associated Schrödinger operator has no negative eigenvalues, we obtain global-in-time bounds, including sharp pointwise decay and modified asymptotics, for small solutions. These results have implications for the asymptotic stability of solitons, or topological solitons, for a variety of problems. For instance, we obtain full asymptotic stability of kinks with respect to odd perturbations for the double Sine-Gordon problem (in an appropriate range of the deformation parameter). For the $ϕ^4$ problem, we obtain asymptotic stability of the kink (with respect to odd perturbations) when the coupling to the internal mode appearing in the linearization around it is neglected. Our results also go beyond these examples since our approach allows for the presence of a fully coherent phenomenon at the level of quadratic interactions, which creates a degeneracy in distorted Fourier space. We devise a suitable framework that incorporates this, and use multilinear harmonic analysis in the distorted setting to control all nonlinear interactions.

On $1$d quadratic Klein-Gordon equations with a potential and symmetries

This paper is a continuation of a previous work Germain-Pusateri (2020) by the first two authors. We focus on $1$ dimensional quadratic Klein-Gordon equations with a potential, under some assumptions that are less general than Germain-Pusateri (2020), but allow us to present some simplifications in the proof of global existence with decay for small solutions. In particular, we can propagate a stronger control on a basic $L^2$-weighted type norm while providing some shorter and less technical proofs for some of the arguments.

Stability and cascades for the Kolmogorov-Zakharov spectrum of wave turbulence

The kinetic wave equation arises in wave turbulence to describe the Fourier spectrum of solutions to the cubic Schroedinger equation. The equation has two Kolmogorov-Zakharov steady states corresponding to out-of-equilibrium cascades transferring for the first solution mass from infinity to zero (small spatial scales to large scales) and for the other solution energy from zero to infinity. After conjecturing the generic development of the two cascades, we verify it partially in the isotropic case by proving the nonlinear stability of the mass cascade in the stationary setting. This constructs non-trivial out-of-equilibrium steady states with a direct energy cascade as well as an indirect mass cascade.

Vortex filament solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations

We consider solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in $3d$ with vortex filament initial data of arbitrary circulation, that is, initial vorticity given by a divergence-free vector-valued measure of arbitrary mass supported on a smooth curve. First, we prove global well-posedness for perturbations of the Oseen vortex column in scaling-critical spaces. Second, we prove local well-posedness (in a sense to be made precise) when the filament is a smooth, closed, non-self-intersecting curve. Besides their physical interest, these results are the first to give well-posedness in a neighborhood of large self-similar solutions of $3d$ Navier-Stokes, as well as solutions which are locally approximately self-similar.

Bounds for spectral projectors on tori

We investigate norms of spectral projectors on thin spherical shells for the Laplacian on tori. This is closely related to the boundedness of resolvents of the Laplacian, and to the boundedness of $L^p$ norms of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian. We formulate a conjecture, and partially prove it.

We prove essentially optimal bounds for norms of spectral projectors on thin spherical shells for the Laplacian on the cylinder (R/Z)*R. In contrast to previous investigations into spectral projectors on tori, having one unbounded dimension available permits a compact self-contained proof.
