Boundedness of bilinear multipliers whose symbols have a narrow support

This work is devoted to studying the boundedness on Lebesgue spaces of bilinear multipliers on $\R$ whose symbol is narrowly supported around a curve (in the frequency plane). We are looking for the optimal decay rate (depending on the width of this support) for exponents satisfying a sub-Hölder scaling. As expected, the geometry of the curve plays an important role, which is described. This has applications for the bilinear Bochner-Riesz problem (in particular, boundedness of multipliers whose symbol is the characteristic function of a set), as well as for the bilinear restriction-extension problem.

Space-time resonances

This article is a short exposition of the space-time resonances method. It was introduced by Masmoudi, Shatah, and the author, in order to understand global existence for nonlinear dispersive equations, set in the whole space, and with small data. The idea is to combine the classical concept of resonances, with the feature of dispersive equations: wave packets propagate at a group velocity which depends on their frequency localization. The analytical method which follows from this idea turns out to be a very general tool.

Selfsimilar expanders of the harmonic map flow

We study the existence, uniqueness, and stability of self-similar expanders of the harmonic map heat flow in equivariant settings. We show that there exist selfsimilar solutions to any admissiable initial data and that their uniqueness and stability properties are essentially determined by the energy-minimising properties of the so called equator maps.

Global existence for coupled Klein-Gordon equations with different speeds

Consider, in dimension 3, a system of coupled Klein-Gordon equations with different speeds, and an arbitrary quadratic nonlinearity. We show, for data which are small, smooth, and localized, that a global solution exists, and that it scatters. The proof relies on the space-time resonance approach; it turns out that the resonant structure of this equation has features which were not studied before, but which are generic in some sense.

Bilinear oscillatory integrals and boundedness for new bilinear multipliers

We consider bilinear oscillatory integrals, i.e. pseudo-product operators whose symbol involves an oscillating factor. Lebesgue space inequalities are established, which give decay as the oscillation becomes stronger ; this extends the well-known linear theory of oscillatory integral in some directions. The proof relies on a combination of time-frequency analysis of Coifman-Meyer type with stationary and non-stationary phase estimates. As a consequence of this analysis, we obtain Lebesgue estimates for new bilinear multipliers defined by non-smooth symbols.

Weak-strong uniqueness for the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes system

We prove weak-strong uniqueness results for the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes system on the torus. In other words, we give conditions on a strong solution so that it is unique in a class of weak solutions. Known weak-strong uniqueness results are improved. Classical uniqueness results for this equation follow naturally.

The second iterate for the Navier-Stokes equation

We consider the iterative resolution scheme for the Navier-Stokes equation, and focus on the second iterate, more precisely on the map from the initial data to the second iterate at a given time t. We investigate boundedness properties of this bilinear operator. This new approach yields very interesting results: a new perspective on Koch-Tataru solutions; a first step towards weak strong uniqueness for Koch-Tataru solutions; and finally an instability result in $B^{-1}_{\infty,q}$, for q>2.

Smooth self-similar blow-up profiles for the wave map equation

Consider the equivariant wave map equation from Minkowski space to a rotationnally symmetric manifold which has an equator (example: the sphere). In dimension 3, this article gives a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a smooth self-similar blow up profile. More generally, we study the relation between 1. the minimizing properties of the equator map for the (elliptic) Dirichlet energy and 2. the existence of a smooth blow-up profile for the (hyperbolic) wave map problem. Several applications of this approach are described.

Finite energy scattering for the Lorentz-Maxwell equation

In the case where the charge of the particle is small compared to its mass, we describe the asymptotics of the Lorentz-Maxwell equation for any finite-energy data. As time goes to infinity, we prove that the speed of the particle converges to a certain limit, whereas the electromagnetic field can be decomposed into a soliton plus a free solution of the Maxwell equation. It is the first instance of a scattering result for general finite energy data in a field-particle equation.

Regularity of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations evolving from small data in BMO^{-1}

In 2001, H. Koch and D. Tataru proved the existence of global in time solutions to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in ${\mathbb{R}}^d$ for initial data small enough in $BMO^{-1}$. We show in this article that the Koch and Tataru solution has higher regularity. As a consequence, we get a decay estimate in time for any space derivative, and space analyticity of the solution. Also as an application of our regularity theorem, we prove a regularity result for self-similar solutions.
