The Uplifton

Almost all proposals to construct de Sitter vacua with a small cosmological constant involve flux compactifications with stabilized moduli. These give AdS vacua, which are uplifted to de Sitter by adding antibranes in certain regions of the compactification manifold. However, antibranes are charged, singular and interact nontrivially with other ingredients of the compactification; this can invalidate the de Sitter construction. In this Letter, we construct a new ingredient for uplifting AdS solutions to de Sitter, which is neutral, smooth and horizonless, and therefore bypasses some of the problems of antibrane uplift.

Schwarzschild-like Topological Solitons

We construct the first class of topological solitons in gravity that are supported by internal electromagnetic flux with vanishing net charges. The solutions are obtained in a six-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory with a three-form flux, and admit an uplift to type IIB supergravity on T$^4$. They are asymptotic to a torus fibration over four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. An interesting class corresponds to solitons with a BPS particle and its anti-BPS partner held apart by a vacuum bubble. In type IIB, they correspond to bound states of BPS and anti-BPS D1-D5 extremal black holes. These metrics are a particular limit of a larger class of axially symmetric metrics that we construct and that describe smooth horizonless topological solitons. They correspond to bound states of three non-BPS bubbles on a line. An important achievement is that the outer bubbles can carry arbitrary D1-D5 charges that we can tune to vanishing net charges. We discuss their properties and compare them to a four-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole of the same mass. We show that they have a long throat with a large redshift, and that they are ultra-compact with a characteristic size of 1.52 times the Schwarzschild radius.

Non-BPS Floating Branes and Bubbling Geometries

We derive a non-BPS linear ansatz using the charged Weyl formalism in string and M-theory backgrounds. Generic solutions are static and axially-symmetric with an arbitrary number of non-BPS sources corresponding to various brane, momentum and KKm charges. Regular sources are either four-charge non-extremal black holes or smooth non-BPS bubbles. We construct several families such as chains of non-extremal black holes or smooth non-BPS bubbling geometries and study their physics. The smooth horizonless geometries can have the same mass and charges as non-extremal black holes. Furthermore, we find examples that scale towards the four-charge BPS black hole when the non-BPS parameters are taken to be small, but the horizon is smoothly resolved by adding a small amount of non-extremality.

Stability of topological solitons, and black string to bubble transition

We study the existence of smooth topological solitons and black strings as locally-stable saddles of the Euclidean gravitational action of five dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory. These objects live in the Kaluza-Klein background of four dimensional Minkowski with an $S^1$. We compute the off-shell gravitational action in the canonical ensemble with fixed boundary data corresponding to the asymptotic radius of $S^1$, and to the electric and magnetic charges that label the solitons and black strings. We show that these objects are locally-stable in large sectors of the phase space with varying lifetime. Furthermore, we determine the globally-stable phases for different regimes of the boundary data, and show that there can be Hawking-Page transitions between the locally-stable phases of the topological solitons and black strings. This analysis demonstrates the existence of a large family of globally-stable smooth solitonic objects in gravity beyond supersymmetry, and presents a mechanism through which they can arise from the black strings.

Smooth Bubbling Geometries Without Supersymmetry

We construct the first smooth bubbling geometries using the Weyl formalism. The solutions are obtained from Einstein theory coupled to a two-form gauge field in six dimensions with two compact directions. We classify the charged Weyl solutions in this framework. Smooth solutions consist of a chain of Kaluza-Klein bubbles that can be neutral or wrapped by electromagnetic fluxes, and are free of curvature and conical singularities. We discuss how such topological structures are prevented from gravitational collapse without struts. When embedded in type IIB, the class of solutions describes D1-D5-KKm solutions in the non-BPS regime, and the smooth bubbling solutions have the same conserved charges as a static four-dimensional non-extremal Cvetic-Youm black hole.

Holomorphic Waves of Black Hole Microstructure

We obtain the largest families constructed to date of $\tfrac{1}{8}$-BPS solutions of type IIB supergravity. They have the same charges and mass as supersymmetric D1-D5-P black holes, but they cap off smoothly with no horizon. Their construction relies on the structure of superstratum states, but allows the momentum wave to have an arbitrary shape. Each family is based on an arbitrary holomorphic function of one variable. More broadly, we show that the most general solution is described by two arbitrary holomorphic functions of three variables. After exhibiting several new families of such "holomorphic superstrata," we reformulate the BPS backgrounds and equations in holomorphic form and show how this simplifies their structure. The holomorphic formulation is thus both a fundamental part of superstrata as well as an effective tool for their construction. In addition, we demonstrate that holomorphy provides a powerful tool in establishing the smoothness of our solutions without constraining the underlying functions. We also exhibit new families of solutions in which the momentum waves of the superstrata are highly localized at infinity but diffuse and spread into the infra-red limit in the core of the superstratum. Our work also leads to some results that can be tested within the dual CFT.

The Great Escape: Tunneling out of Microstate Geometries

We compute the quasi-normal frequencies of scalars in asymptotically-flat microstate geometries that have the same charge as a D1-D5-P black hole, but whose long BTZ-like throat ends in a smooth cap. In general the wave equation is not separable, but we find a class of geometries in which the non-separable term is negligible and we can compute the quasi-normal frequencies using WKB methods. We argue that our results are a universal property of all microstate geometries with deeply-capped BTZ throats. These throats generate large redshifts, which lead to exceptionally-low-energy states with extremely long decay times, set by the central charge of the dual CFT to the power of twice the dimension of the operator dual to the mode. While these decay times are extremely long, we also argue that the energy decay is bounded, at large $t$, by $(log~t)^{-2}$ and is comparable with the behavior of ultracompact stars, as one should expect for microstate geometries.

Topological Stars and Black Holes

We study smooth bubble spacetimes in five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory that resemble four-dimensional magnetic black holes upon Kaluza-Klein reduction. We denote them as Topological Stars since they have topological cycles supported by magnetic flux. They can be macroscopically large compared to the size of the Kaluza-Klein circle and could describe qualitative properties of microstate geometries for astrophysical black holes. We also describe five-dimensional black strings without curvature singularity, the interior caps as a two-dimensional Milne space with a bubble.

Gravitational Footprints of Black Holes and Their Microstate Geometries

We construct a family of non-supersymmetric extremal black holes and their horizonless microstate geometries in four dimensions. The black holes can have finite angular momentum and an arbitrary charge-to-mass ratio, unlike their supersymmetric cousins. These features make them and their microstate geometries astrophysically relevant. Thus, they provide interesting prototypes to study deviations from Kerr solutions caused by new horizon-scale physics. In this paper, we compute the gravitational multipole structure of these solutions and compare them to Kerr black holes. The multipoles of the black hole differ significantly from Kerr as they depend non-trivially on the charge-to-mass ratio. The horizonless microstate geometries have the same multipoles as their corresponding black hole, with small deviations set by the scale of their microstructure.

Topological Stars, Black holes and Generalized Charged Weyl Solutions

We construct smooth static bubble solutions, denoted as topological stars, in five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theories which are asymptotic to $\mathbb{R}^{1,3}\times$S$^1$. The bubbles are supported by allowing electromagnetic fluxes to wrap smooth topological cycles. The solutions live in the same regime as non-extremal static charged black strings, that reduce to black holes in four dimensions. We generalize to multi-body configurations on a line by constructing closed-form generalized charged Weyl solutions in the same theory. Generic solutions consist of topological stars and black strings stacked on a line, that are wrapped by electromagnetic fluxes. We embed the solutions in type IIB String Theory on S$^1\times$T$^4$. In this framework, the charged Weyl solutions provide a novel class in String Theory of multiple charged objects in the non-supersymmetric and non-extremal black hole regime.

Bubbling the NHEK

We build the first family of smooth bubbling microstate geometries that are asymptotic to the near-horizon region of extremal five-dimensional Kerr black holes (NHEK). These black holes arise as extremal non-supersymmetric highly-rotating D1-D5-P solutions in type IIB string theory on T$^4\times$S$^1$. Our solutions are asymptotically NHEK in the UV and end in the IR with a smooth cap. In the context of the Kerr/CFT correspondence, these bubbling geometries are dual to pure states of the 1+1 dimensional chiral conformal field theory dual to NHEK. Since our solutions have a bubbling structure in the IR, they correspond to an IR phase of broken conformal symmetry, and their existence supports the possibility that all the pure states whose counting gives the Kerr black hole entropy correspond to horizonless bulk configurations.

A systematic construction of microstate geometries with low angular momentum

We outline a systematic procedure to obtain horizonless microstate geometries that have the same charges as three-charge five-dimensional black holes with a macroscopically-large horizon area and an arbitrarily-small angular momentum. There are two routes through which such solutions can be constructed: using multi-center Gibbons-Hawking (GH) spaces or using superstratum technology. So far the only solutions corresponding to microstate geometries for black holes with no angular momentum have been obtained via superstrata, and multi-center Gibbons-Hawking spaces have been believed to give rise only to microstate geometries of BMPV black holes with a large angular momentum. We perform a thorough search throughout the parameter space of smooth horizonless solutions with four GH centers and find that these have an angular momentum that is generally larger than 80% of the cosmic censorship bound. However, we find that solutions with three GH centers and one supertube (which are smooth in six-dimensional supergravity) can have an arbitrarily-low angular momentum. Our construction thus gives a recipe to build large classes of microstate geometries for zero-angular-momentum black holes without resorting to superstratum technology.

Thermal Decay without Information Loss in Horizonless Microstate Geometries

We develop a new hybrid WKB technique to compute boundary-to-boundary scalar Green functions in asymptotically-AdS backgrounds in which the scalar wave equation is separable and is explicitly solvable in the asymptotic region. We apply this technique to a family of six-dimensional $\frac{1}{8}$-BPS asymptotically AdS$_3\,\times\,$S$^3$ horizonless geometries that have the same charges and angular momenta as a D1-D5-P black hole with a large horizon area. At large and intermediate distances, these geometries very closely approximate the extremal-BTZ$\,\times\,$S$^3$ geometry of the black hole, but instead of having an event horizon, these geometries have a smooth highly-redshifted global-AdS$_3\,\times\,$S$^3$ cap in the IR. We show that the response function of a scalar probe, in momentum space, is essentially given by the pole structure of the highly-redshifted global-AdS$_3$ modulated by the BTZ response function. In position space, this translates into a sharp exponential black-hole-like decay for times shorter than $N_1 N_5$, followed by the emergence of evenly spaced "echoes from the cap," with period $\sim N_1 N_5$. Our result shows that horizonless microstate geometries can have the same thermal decay as black holes without the associated information loss.

The full space of BPS multicenter states with pure D-brane charges

We investigate the space of BPS states in type IIA string theory on a T$^6$ wrapped by one D6 brane and three D2 branes wrapping three disjoint 2-tori. This system of branes has 12 ground states. We show that these 12 states are all recovered as Coulomb branch BPS multicenter bound states, in which each center preserves 16 supercharges. Moreover, we show that these multicenter solutions can only exist with zero angular momentum, supporting the conjecture that all black hole microstates have zero angular momentum. For large charges, they might describe "near-horizon limit" of fuzzballs.

Superstratum Symbiosis

Superstrata are smooth horizonless microstate geometries for the supersymmetric D1-D5-P black hole in type IIB supergravity. In the CFT, 'superstratum states' are defined to be the component of the supergraviton gas that is obtained by breaking the CFT into '$|00\rangle$-strands' and acting on each strand with the 'small,' anomaly-free superconformal generators. We show that the recently-constructed supercharged superstrata represent a final and crucial component for the construction of the supergravity dual of a generic superstratum state and how the supergravity solution faithfully represents all the coherent superstratum states of the CFT. For the supergravity alone, this shows that generic superstrata do indeed fluctuate as functions of three independent variables. Smoothness of the complete supergravity solution also involves 'coiffuring constraints' at second-order in the fluctuations and we describe how these lead to new predictions for three-point functions in the dual CFT. We use a hybrid of the original and supercharged superstrata to construct families of single-mode superstrata that still have free moduli after one has fixed the asymptotic charges of the system. We also study scalar wave perturbations in a particular family of such solutions and show that the mass gap depends on the free moduli. This can have interesting implications for superstrata at non-zero temperature.

AdS$_2$ Holography: Mind the Cap

AdS$_2$ plays an extremely important role in black-hole physics. We construct several infinite families of supergravity solutions that are asymptotically AdS$_2$ in the UV, and terminate in the IR with a cap that is singular in two dimensions but smooth in ten dimensions. These solutions break conformal invariance, and should correspond to supersymmetric ground states of a holographically dual CFT$_1$. We solve the free massless scalar wave equation on a family of these solutions, finding towers of finite-energy normalizable bound-state excitations. We discuss the intriguing possibility that these excitations correspond to time-dependent excitations of the dual CFT$_1$, which would imply that this CFT$_1$ is dynamical rather than topological, and hence cannot have a conformally invariant ground state.

Four-center bubbled BPS solutions with a Gibbons-Hawking base

We construct four-center bubbled BPS solutions with a Gibbons-Hawking base space. We give a systematic procedure to build scaling solutions: starting from three-supertube configurations and using generalized spectral flows and gauge transformations to extend to solutions with four Gibbons-Hawking centers. This allows us to construct very large families of smooth horizonless solutions that have the same charges and angular momentum as supersymmetric black holes with a macroscopically large horizon area. Our construction reveals that all scaling solutions with four Gibbons Hawking centers have an angular momentum at around 99% of the cosmic censorship bound. We give both an analytical and a numerical explanation for this unexpected feature.

Semi-classical analysis of black holes in Loop Quantum Gravity: Modelling Hawking radiation with volume fluctuations

We introduce the notion of fluid approximation of a quantum spherical black hole in the context of Loop Quantum Gravity. In this limit, the microstates of the black hole are intertwiners between "large" representations $s_i$ which typically scale as $s_i \sim \sqrt{a_H}$ where $a_H$ denotes the area of the horizon in Planck units. The punctures with large colors are, for the black hole horizon, similar to what are the fluid parcels for a classical fluid. We dub them puncels. Hence, in the fluid limit, the horizon is composed by puncels which are themselves interpreted as composed (in the sense of the tensor product) by a large number of more fundamental intertwiners. We study the spectrum of the euclidean volume acting on puncels and we compute its quantum fluctuations. Then, we propose an interpretation of black holes radiation based on the properties of the quantum fluctuations of the euclidean volume operator. We estimate a typical temperature of the black hole and we show that it scales as the Hawking temperature.
