Arithmetic dynamics of random polynomials

We investigate from a statistical perspective the arithmetic properties of the dynamics of polynomials of fixed degree and defined over the field of rational numbers. To start with, ordering their affine conjugacy classes by height, we show that their average number of rational preperiodic points is equal to zero, thereby proving a strong average version of the uniform boundedness conjecture of Morton and Silverman. Next, inspired by the analogy with the successive minima of a lattice we define the dynamical successive minima of a polynomial. Noting that these quantities are invariant under the action by conjugacy of the affine group we study their average behaviour using the aforementioned ordering by height. In particular, we prove an optimal statistical version of the dynamical Lang conjecture on the canonical height of rational non-preperiodic points.

Height of rational points on random Fano hypersurfaces

We investigate in a statistical fashion the smallest height of a rational point on a Fano hypersurface defined over the field of rational numbers. Along the way, we establish an average version of Manin's conjecture about the number of rational points of bounded height on Fano varieties for the complete family of Fano hypersurfaces of fixed degree and dimension.

The Hasse principle for random Fano hypersurfaces

It is known that the Brauer--Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle is vacuous for smooth Fano hypersurfaces of dimension at least $3$ over any number field. Moreover, for such varieties it follows from a general conjecture of Colliot-Thélène that the Brauer--Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle should be the only one, so that the Hasse principle is expected to hold. Working over the field of rational numbers and ordering Fano hypersurfaces of fixed degree and dimension by height, we prove that almost every such hypersurface satisfies the Hasse principle provided that the dimension is at least $3$. This proves a conjecture of Poonen and Voloch in every case except for cubic surfaces.

A statistical view on the conjecture of Lang about the canonical height on elliptic curves

We adopt a statistical point of view on the conjecture of Lang which predicts a lower bound for the canonical height of non-torsion rational points on elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. More specifically, we prove that among the family of all elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ and having positive rank, there is a density one subfamily of curves which satisfy a strong form of Lang's conjecture.

On the distribution of squarefree integers in arithmetic progressions

We investigate the error term of the asymptotic formula for the number of squarefree integers up to some bound, and lying in some arithmetic progression a (mod q). In particular, we prove an upper bound for its variance as a varies over $(\mathbb{Z}/q\mathbb{Z})^{\times}$ which considerably improves upon earlier work of Blomer.

Integral points on quadratic twists and linear growth for certain elliptic fibrations

We prove that the number of rational points of bounded height on certain del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1 defined over Q grows linearly, as predicted by Manin's conjecture. Along the way, we investigate the average number of integral points of small naive height on quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve with full rational 2-torsion.

Affine congruences and rational points on a certain cubic surface

We establish estimates for the number of solutions of certain affine congruences. These estimates are then used to prove Manin's conjecture for a cubic surface split over Q and whose singularity type is D_4. This improves on a result of Browning and answers a problem posed by Tschinkel.

Manin's conjecture for a cubic surface with 2A_2+A_1 singularity type

We establish Manin's conjecture for a cubic surface split over Q and whose singularity type is 2A_2+A_1. For this, we make use of a deep result about the equidistribution of the values of a certain restricted divisor function in three variables in arithmetic progressions. This result is due to Friedlander and Iwaniec (and was later improved by Heath-Brown) and draws on the work of Deligne.
