Aging of asymmetric dynamics on the random energy model

We show aging of Glauber-type dynamics on the random energy model, in the sense that we obtain the scaling limits of the clock process and of the age process. The latter encodes the Gibbs weight of the configuration occupied by the dynamics. Both limits are expressed in terms of stable subordinators.

On the dynamics of trap models in Z^d

We consider trap models on Z^d, namely continuous time Markov jump process on Z^d with embedded chain given by a generic discrete time random walk, and whose mean waiting time at x is given by tau_x, with tau = (tau_x, x in Z^d) a family of positive iid random variables in the basin of attraction of an alpha-stable law, 0<alpha<1. We may think of x as a trap, and tau_x as the depth of the trap at x. We are interested in the trap process, namely the process that associates to time t the depth of the currently visited trap. Our first result is the convergence of the law of that process under suitable scaling. The limit process is given by the jumps of a certain alpha-stable subordinator at the inverse of another alpha-stable subordinator, correlated with the first subordinator. For that result, the requirements for the embedded random walk are a) the validity of a law of large numbers for its range, and b) the slow variation at infinity of the tail of the distribution of its time of return to the origin: they include all transient random walks as well as all planar random walks, and also many one dimensional random walks. We then derive aging results for the process, namely scaling limits for some two-time correlation functions thereof, a strong form of which requires an assumption of transience, stronger than a, b. The above mentioned scaling limit result is an averaged result with respect to tau. Under an additional condition on the size of the intersection of the ranges of two independent copies of the embeddded random walk, roughly saying that it is small compared with the size of the range, we derive a stronger scaling limit result, roughly stating that it holds in probability with respect to tau. With that additional condition, we also strengthen the aging results, from the averaged version mentioned above, to convergence in probability with respect to tau.

Jack superpolynomials with negative fractional parameter: clustering properties and super-Virasoro ideals

The Jack polynomials P_λ^{(α)} at α=-(k+1)/(r-1) indexed by certain (k,r,N)-admissible partitions are known to span an ideal I^{(k,r)}_N of the space of symmetric functions in N variables. The ideal I^{(k,r)}_N is invariant under the action of certain differential operators which include half the Virasoro algebra. Moreover, the Jack polynomials in I^{(k,r)}_N admit clusters of size at most k: they vanish when k+1 of their variables are identified, and they do not vanish when only k of them are identified. We generalize most of these properties to superspace using orthogonal eigenfunctions of the supersymmetric extension of the trigonometric Calogero-Moser-Sutherland model known as Jack superpolynomials. In particular, we show that the Jack superpolynomials P_Λ^{(α)} at α=-(k+1)/(r-1) indexed by certain (k,r,N)-admissible superpartitions span an ideal {\mathcal I}^{(k,r)}_N of the space of symmetric polynomials in N commuting variables and N anticommuting variables. We prove that the ideal {\mathcal I}^{(k,r)}_N is stable with respect to the action of the negative-half of the super-Virasoro algebra. In addition, we show that the Jack superpolynomials in {\mathcal I}^{(k,r)}_N vanish when k+1 of their commuting variables are equal, and conjecture that they do not vanish when only k of them are identified. This allows us to conclude that the standard Jack polynomials with prescribed symmetry should satisfy similar clustering properties. Finally, we conjecture that the elements of {\mathcal I}^{(k,2)}_N provide a basis for the subspace of symmetric superpolynomials in N variables that vanish when k+1 commuting variables are set equal to each other.

K-independent percolation on trees

Consider the class of k-independent bond, respectively site, percolations with parameter p on an infinite tree T. We derive tight bounds on p for both a.s. percolation and a.s. nonpercolation. The bounds are continuous functions of k and the branching number of T. This extends previous results by Lyons for the independent case (k=0) and by Bollobàs & Balister for 1-independent bond percolations. Central to our argumentation are moment method bounds à la Lyons supplemented by explicit percolation models à la Bollobàs & Balister. An indispensable tool is the minimality and explicit construction of Shearer's measure on the k-fuzz of Z.

Einstein relation for reversible diffusions in random environment

We consider reversible diffusions in random environment and prove the Einstein relation for this model. It says that the derivative of the effective velocity under an additional local drift equals the diffusivity of the model without drift. The Einstein relation is conjectured to hold for a variety of models but is proved insofar only in particular cases. Our proof makes use of homogenization arguments, the Girsanov transform, and a refinement of the regeneration times introduced by Lian Shen in [20].

Half-lattice paths and Virasoro characters

We first briefly review the role of lattice paths in the derivation of fermionic expressions for the M(p,p') minimal model characters of the Virasoro Lie algebra. We then focus on the recently introduced half-lattice paths for the M(p,2p+/-1) characters, reformulating them in such a way that the two cases may be treated uniformly. That the generating functions of these half-lattice paths are indeed M(p,2p+/-1) characters is proved by describing weight preserving bijections between them and the corresponding RSOS lattice paths. Here, the M(p,2p-1) case is derived for the first time. We then apply the methods of Bressoud and Warnaar to these half-lattice paths to derive fermionic expressions for the Virasoro characters X^{p,2p+/-1}_{1,2} that differ from those obtained from the RSOS paths. This work is an extension of that presented by the third author at the "7th International Conference on Lattice Path Combinatorics and Applications", Siena, Italy, July 2010.

Evaluation and normalization of Jack superpolynomials

Two evaluation formulas are derived for the Jack superpolynomials. The evaluation formulas are expressed in terms of products of fillings of skew diagrams. One of these formulas is nothing but the evaluation formula of the Jack polynomials with prescribed symmetry, which thereby receives here a remarkably simple formulation. Among the auxiliary results required to establish the evaluation formulas, the determination of the conditions ensuring the non-vanishing coefficients in a Pieri-type rule for Jack superpolynomials is worth pointing out. An important application of the evaluation formulas is a new derivation of the combinatorial norm of the Jack superpolynomials. We finally mention that the introduction of a simpler version of the dominance ordering on superpartitions is fundamental to establish our results.

Path representation of su(2)_k states II: Operator construction of the fermionic character and spin-1/2--RSOS factorization

This is the second of two articles (independent of each other) devoted to the analysis of the path description of the states in su(2)_k WZW models. Here we present a constructive derivation of the fermionic character at level k based on these paths. The starting point is the expression of a path in terms of a sequence of nonlocal (formal) operators acting on the vacuum ground-state path. Within this framework, the key step is the construction of the level-k operator sequences out of those at level-1 by the action of a new type of operators. These actions of operators on operators turn out to have a path interpretation: these paths are precisely the finitized RSOS paths related to the unitary minimal models M(k+1,k+2). We thus unravel -- at the level of the path representation of the states --, a direct factorization into a k=1 spinon part times a RSOS factor. It is also pointed out that since there are two fermionic forms describing these finite RSOS paths, the resulting fermionic su(2)_k characters arise in two versions. Finally, the relation between the present construction and the Nagoya spectral decomposition of the path space is sketched.

Path representation of su(2)_k states I: Operators and particles for k=1,2

This is the first of two articles devoted to the analysis of the path description of the states in su(2)_k WZW models, a representation well suited for constructive derivations of the fermionic characters. In this first article, the cases k=1,2 are treated in detail, emphasizing a different description in each case (operators vs particles). For k=1, we first prove, as a side result, the equivalence of two known path representations for the finitized su(2)_1 states by displaying an explicit bijection. An immediate offshoot is the gain of a new and simple weighting for the (Kyoto) path representation that generalizes to level k. The bijection also suggests two operator constructions for the su(2)_1 paths, a local and a nonlocal one, both interrelated. These are formal operators that map a path to another path, so that any path can be obtained by successive applications of these operators on a simple reference (ground-state) path. The nonlocal operator description is the starting point for a direct and elementary derivation of the su(2)_1 spinon character. The second part presents an extensive study of the su(2)_2 paths from their particle point of view, where the particles are defined as the path building blocks. The resulting generating functions appear to provide new (at least superficially) fermionic forms of the characters. In particular, a nice relationship between the sum of the j=0,1 characters at k=2 and the two ones at k=1 is unravelled.

A bijection between paths for the M(p,2p+1) minimal model Virasoro characters

The states in the irreducible modules of the minimal models can be represented by infinite lattice paths arising from consideration of the corresponding RSOS statistical models. For the M(p,2p+1) models, a completely different path representation has been found recently, this one on a half-integer lattice; it has no known underlying statistical-model interpretation. The correctness of this alternative representation has not yet been demonstrated, even at the level of the generating functions, since the resulting fermionic characters differ from the known ones. This gap is filled here, with the presentation of two versions of a bijection between the two path representations of the M(p,2p+1) states. In addition, a half-lattice path representation for the M(p+1,2p+1) models is stated, and other generalisations suggested.

Harmonic measures versus quasiconformal measures for hyperbolic groups

We establish a dimension formula for the harmonic measure of a finitely supported and symmetric random walk on a hyperbolic group. We also characterize random walks for which this dimension is maximal. Our approach is based on the Green metric, a metric which provides a geometric point of view on random walks and, in particular, which allows us to interpret harmonic measures as \qc measures on the boundary of the group.

Paths and partitions: combinatorial descriptions of the parafermionic states

The Z_k parafermionic conformal field theories, despite the relative complexity of their modes algebra, offer the simplest context for the study of the bases of states and their different combinatorial representations. Three bases are known. The classic one is given by strings of the fundamental parafermionic operators whose sequences of modes are in correspondence with restricted partitions with parts at distance k-1 differing at least by 2. Another basis is expressed in terms of the ordered modes of the k-1 different parafermionic fields, which are in correspondence with the so-called multiple partitions. Both types of partitions have a natural (Bressoud) path representation. Finally, a third basis, formulated in terms of different paths, is inherited from the solution of the restricted solid-on-solid model of Andrews-Baxter-Forrester. The aim of this work is to review, in a unified and pedagogical exposition, these four different combinatorial representations of the states of the Z_k parafermionic models. The first part of this article presents the different paths and partitions and their bijective relations; it is purely combinatorial, self-contained and elementary; it can be read independently of the conformal-field-theory applications. The second part links this combinatorial analysis with the bases of states of the Z_k parafermionic theories. With the prototypical example of the parafermionic models worked out in detail, this analysis contributes to fix some foundations for the combinatorial study of more complicated theories. Indeed, as we briefly indicate in ending, generalized versions of both the Bressoud and the Andrews-Baxter-Forrester paths emerge naturally in the description of the minimal models.

Asymptotic entropy and green speed for random walks on countable groups

We study asymptotic properties of the Green metric associated with transient random walks on countable groups. We prove that the rate of escape of the random walk computed in the Green metric equals its asymptotic entropy. The proof relies on integral representations of both quantities with the extended Martin kernel. In the case of finitely generated groups, where this result is known (Benjamini and Peres [Probab. Theory Related Fields 98 (1994) 91--112]), we give an alternative proof relying on a version of the so-called fundamental inequality (relating the rate of escape, the entropy and the logarithmic volume growth) extended to random walks with unbounded support.

Logarithmic M(2,p) Minimal Models, their Logarithmic Couplings, and Duality

A natural construction of the logarithmic extension of the M(2,p) minimal models is presented, which generalises our previous model [0708.0802] of percolation (p=3). Its key aspect is the replacement of the minimal model irreducible modules by reducible ones obtained by requiring that only one of the two principal singular vectors of each module vanish. The resulting theory is then constructed systematically by repeatedly fusing these building block representations. This generates indecomposable representations of the type which signify the presence of logarithmic partner fields in the theory. The basic data characterising these indecomposable modules, the logarithmic couplings, are computed for many special cases and given a new structural interpretation. Quite remarkably, a number of them are presented in closed analytic form (for general p). These are the prime examples of ``gauge-invariant'' data - quantities independent of the ambiguities present in defining the logarithmic partner fields. Finally, mere global conformal invariance is shown to enforce strong constraints on the allowed spectrum: It is not possible to include modules other than those generated by the fusion of the model's building blocks. This generalises the statement that there cannot exist two effective central charges in a c=0 model. It also suggests the existence of a second ``dual'' logarithmic theory for each p. Such dual models are briefly discussed.

From Percolation to Logarithmic Conformal Field Theory

The smallest deformation of the minimal model M(2,3) that can accommodate Cardy's derivation of the percolation crossing probability is presented. It is shown that this leads to a consistent logarithmic conformal field theory at c=0. A simple recipe for computing the associated fusion rules is given. The differences between this theory and the other recently proposed c=0 logarithmic conformal field theories are underlined. The discussion also emphasises the existence of invariant logarithmic couplings that generalise Gurarie's anomaly number.

The Extended Algebra of the Minimal Models

The minimal models M(p',p) with p' > 2 have a unique (non-trivial) simple current of conformal dimension h = (p' - 2) (p - 2) / 4. The representation theory of the extended algebra defined by this simple current is investigated in detail. All highest weight representations are proved to be irreducible: There are thus no singular vectors in the extended theory. This has interesting structural consequences. In particular, it leads to a recursive method for computing the various terms appearing in the operator product expansion of the simple current with itself. The simplest extended models are analysed in detail and the question of equivalence of conformal field theories is carefully examined.

The Extended Algebra of the SU(2) Wess-Zumino-Witten Models

The Wess-Zumino-Witten model defined on the group SU(2) has a unique (non-trivial) simple current of conformal dimension k/4 for each level k. The extended algebra defined by this simple current is carefully constructed in terms of generalised commutation relations, and the corresponding representation theory is investigated. This extended algebra approach is proven to realise a faithful ("free-field-type") representation of the SU(2) model. Subtleties in the formulation of the extended theory are illustrated throughout by the k=1, 2 and 4 models. For the first two cases, bases for the modules of the extended theory are given and rigorously justified.

Orthogonality of Jack polynomials in superspace

Jack polynomials in superspace, orthogonal with respect to a ``combinatorial'' scalar product, are constructed. They are shown to coincide with the Jack polynomials in superspace, orthogonal with respect to an ``analytical'' scalar product, introduced in hep-th/0209074 as eigenfunctions of a supersymmetric quantum mechanical many-body problem. The results of this article rely on generalizing (to include an extra parameter) the theory of classical symmetric functions in superspace developed recently in math.CO/0509408
