A percolation process on the binary tree where large finite clusters are frozen

We study a percolation process on the planted binary tree, where clusters freeze as soon as they become larger than some fixed parameter N. We show that as N goes to infinity, the process converges in some sense to the frozen percolation process introduced by Aldous. In particular, our results show that the asymptotic behaviour differs substantially from that on the square lattice, on which a similar process has been studied recently by van den Berg, de Lima and Nolin.

A percolation process on the square lattice where large finite clusters are frozen

Aldous constructed a growth process for the binary tree where clusters freeze as soon as they become infinite. It was pointed out by Benjamini and Schramm that such a process does not exist for the square lattice. This motivated us to investigate the modified process on the square lattice, where clusters freeze as soon as they have diameter larger than or equal to N, the parameter of the model. The non-existence result, mentioned above, raises the question if the N-parameter model shows some 'anomalous' behaviour as N tends to infinity. For instance, if one looks at the cluster of a given vertex, does, as N tends to infinity, the probability that it eventually freezes go to 1? Does this probability go to 0? More generally, what can be said about the size of a final cluster? We give a partial answer to some of such questions.

Connection probabilities and RSW-type bounds for the FK Ising model

We prove Russo-Seymour-Welsh-type uniform bounds on crossing probabilities for the FK Ising model at criticality, independent of the boundary conditions. Our proof relies mainly on Smirnov's fermionic observable for the FK Ising model, which allows us to get precise estimates on boundary connection probabilities. It remains purely discrete, in particular we do not make use of any continuum limit, and it can be used to derive directly several noteworthy results - some new and some not - among which the fact that there is no spontaneous magnetization at criticality, tightness properties for the interfaces, and the existence of several critical exponents, in particular the half-plane one-arm exponent.

SLE(6) and the geometry of diffusion fronts

We study the diffusion front for a natural two-dimensional model where many particles starting at the origin diffuse independently. It turns out that this model can be described using properties of near-critical percolation, and provides a natural example where critical fractal geometries spontaneously arise.

Inhomogeneity and universality: off-critical behavior of interfaces

We further study the interfaces arising in a situation of inhomogeneity. More precisely, we identify a characteristic length for the gradient percolation model, that enables us to tighten previous estimates established for it. This allows to construct non-trivial scaling limits: the limiting objects share some properties with critical percolation interfaces, but locally, they rather behave like off-critical percolation interfaces.

Critical exponents of planar gradient percolation

We study gradient percolation for site percolation on the triangular lattice. This is a percolation model where the percolation probability depends linearly on the location of the site. We prove the results predicted by physicists for this model. More precisely, we describe the fluctuations of the interfaces around their (straight) scaling limits, and the expected and typical lengths of these interfaces. These results build on the recent results for critical percolation on this lattice by Smirnov, Lawler, Schramm and Werner, and on the scaling ideas developed by Kesten.

Near-critical percolation in two dimensions

We give a self-contained and detailed presentation of Kesten's results that allow to relate critical and near-critical percolation on the triangular lattice. They constitute an important step in the derivation of the exponents describing the near-critical behavior of this model. For future use and reference, we also show how these results can be obtained in more general situations, and we state some new consequences.

Asymmetry of near-critical percolation interfaces

We study the possible scaling limits of percolation interfaces in two dimensions on the triangular lattice. When one lets the percolation parameter p(N) vary with the size N of the box that one is considering, three possibilities arise in the large-scale limit. It is known that when p(N) does not converge to 1/2 fast enough, then the scaling limits are degenerate, whereas if p(N) - 1 / 2 goes to zero quickly, the scaling limits are SLE(6) as when p=1/2. We study some properties of the (non-void) intermediate regime where the large scale behavior is neither SLE(6) nor degenerate. We prove that in this case, the law of any scaling limit is singular with respect to that of SLE(6), even if it is still supported on the set of curves with Hausdorff dimension equal to 7/4.

Large Scale Properties of the IIIC for 2D Percolation

We reinvestigate the 2D problem of the inhomogeneous incipient infinite cluster where, in an independent percolation model, the density decays to p_c with an inverse power, λ, of the distance to the origin. Assuming the existence of critical exponents (as is known in the case of the triangular site lattice) if the power is less than 1/ν, with νthe correlation length exponent, we demonstrate an infinite cluster with scale dimension given by D_H=2-βλ. Further, we investigate the critical case λ_c=1/νand show that iterated logarithmic corrections will tip the balance between the possibility and impossibility of an infinite cluster.
