On the contraction properties of Sinkhorn semigroups

We develop a novel stability theory for Sinkhorn semigroups based on Lyapunov techniques and quantitative contraction coefficients, and establish exponential convergence of Sinkhorn iterations on weighted Banach spaces. This operator-theoretic framework yields explicit exponential decay rates of Sinkhorn iterates toward Schrödinger bridges with respect to a broad class of $ϕ$-divergences and Kantorovich-type distances, including relative entropy, squared Hellinger integrals, $α$-divergences, weighted total variation norms, and Wasserstein distances. To the best of our knowledge, these results provide the first systematic contraction inequalities of this kind for entropic transport and the Sinkhorn algorithm. We further introduce Lyapunov contraction principles under minimal regularity assumptions, leading to quantitative exponential stability estimates for a large family of Sinkhorn semigroups. The framework applies to models with polynomially growing potentials and heavy-tailed marginals on general normed spaces, as well as to more structured boundary state-space models, including semicircle transitions and Beta, Weibull, and exponential marginals, together with semi-compact settings. Finally, our approach extends naturally to statistical finite mixtures of such models, including kernel-based density estimators arising in modern generative modeling.

On the Mathematical foundations of Diffusion Monte Carlo

The Diffusion Monte Carlo method with constant number of walkers, also called Stochastic Reconfiguration as well as Sequential Monte Carlo, is a widely used Monte Carlo methodology for computing the ground-state energy and wave function of quantum systems. In this study, we present the first mathematically rigorous analysis of this class of stochastic methods on non necessarily compact state spaces, including linear diffusions evolving in quadratic absorbing potentials, yielding what seems to be the first result of this type for this class of models. We present a novel and general mathematical framework with easily checked Lyapunov stability conditions that ensure the uniform-in-time convergence of Diffusion Monte Carlo estimates towards the top of the spectrum of Schrödinger operators. For transient free evolutions, we also present a divergence blow up of the estimates w.r.t. the time horizon even when the asymptotic fluctuation variances are uniformly bounded. We also illustrate the impact of these results in the context of generalized coupled quantum harmonic oscillators with non necessarily reversible nor stable diffusive particle and a quadratic energy absorbing well associated with a semi-definite positive matrix force.

Self-interacting diffusions: long-time behaviour and exit-problem in the convex case

We study a class of time-inhomogeneous diffusion: the self-interacting one. We show a convergence result with a rate of convergence that does not depend on the diffusion coefficient. Finally, we establish a so-called Kramers' type law for the first exit-time of the process from domain of attractions when the landscapes are uniformly convex.

On the Stability of Positive Semigroups

The stability and contraction properties of positive integral semigroups on Polish spaces are investigated. Our novel analysis is based on the extension of V-norm contraction methods, associated to functionally weighted Banach spaces for Markov semigroups, to positive semigroups. This methodology is applied to a general class of positive and possibly time-inhomogeneous bounded integral semigroups and their normalised versions. The spectral theorems that we develop are an extension of Perron-Frobenius and Krein-Rutman theorems for positive operators to a class of time-varying positive semigroups. In the context of time-homogeneous models, the regularity conditions discussed in the present article appear to be necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of leading eigenvalues. We review and illustrate the impact of these results in the context of positive semigroups arising in transport theory, physics, mathematical biology and signal processing.

A note on Riccati matrix difference equations

Discrete algebraic Riccati equations and their fixed points are well understood and arise in a variety of applications, however, the time-varying equations have not yet been fully explored in the literature. In this article we provide a self-contained study of discrete time Riccati matrix difference equations. In particular, we provide a novel Riccati semigroup duality formula and a new Floquet-type representation for these equations. Due to the aperiodicity of the underlying flow of the solution matrix, conventional Floquet theory does not apply in this setting and thus further analysis is required. We illustrate the impact of these formulae with an explicit description of the solution of time-varying Riccati difference equations and its fundamental-type solution in terms of the fixed point of the equation and an invertible linear matrix map, as well as uniform upper and lower bounds on the Riccati maps. These are the first results of this type for time varying Riccati matrix difference equations.

A theoretical analysis of one-dimensional discrete generation ensemble Kalman particle filters

Despite the widespread usage of discrete generation Ensemble Kalman particle filtering methodology to solve nonlinear and high dimensional filtering and inverse problems, little is known about their mathematical foundations. As genetic-type particle filters (a.k.a. sequential Monte Carlo), this ensemble-type methodology can also be interpreted as mean-field particle approximations of the Kalman-Bucy filtering equation. In contrast with conventional mean-field type interacting particle methods equipped with a globally Lipschitz interacting drift-type function, Ensemble Kalman filters depend on a nonlinear and quadratic-type interaction function defined in terms of the sample covariance of the particles. Most of the literature in applied mathematics and computer science on these sophisticated interacting particle methods amounts to designing different classes of useable observer-type particle methods. These methods are based on a variety of inconsistent but judicious ensemble auxiliary transformations or include additional inflation/localisationtype algorithmic innovations, in order to avoid the inherent time-degeneracy of an insufficient particle ensemble size when solving a filtering problem with an unstable signal. To the best of our knowledge, the first and the only rigorous mathematical analysis of these sophisticated discrete generation particle filters is developed in the pioneering articles by Le Gland-Monbet-Tran and by Mandel-Cobb-Beezley, which were published in the early 2010s. Nevertheless, besides the fact that these studies prove the asymptotic consistency of the Ensemble Kalman filter, they provide exceedingly pessimistic meanerror estimates that grow exponentially fast with respect to the time horizon, even for linear Gaussian filtering problems with stable one dimensional signals. In the present article we develop a novel self-contained and complete stochastic perturbation analysis of the fluctuations, the stability, and the long-time performance of these discrete generation ensemble Kalman particle filters, including time-uniform and non-asymptotic mean-error estimates that apply to possibly unstable signals. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first results of this type in the literature on discrete generation particle filters, including the class of genetic-type particle filters and discrete generation ensemble Kalman filters. The stochastic Riccati difference equations considered in this work are also of interest in their own right, as a prototype of a new class of stochastic rational difference equation.

Quantum harmonic oscillators and Feynman-Kac path integrals for linear diffusive particles

We propose a new solvable class of multidimensional quantum harmonic oscillators for a linear diffusive particle and a quadratic energy absorbing well associated with a semi-definite positive matrix force. Under natural and easily checked controllability conditions, the ground state and the zero-point energy are explicitly computed in terms of a positive fixed point of a continuous time algebraic Riccati matrix equation. We also present an explicit solution of normalized and time dependent Feynman-Kac measures in terms of a time varying linear dynamical system coupled with a differential Riccati matrix equation. A refined non asymptotic analysis of the stability of these models is developed based on a recently developed Floquet-type representation of time varying exponential semigroups of Riccati matrices. We provide explicit and non asymptotic estimates of the exponential decays to equilibrium of Feynman-Kac semigroups in terms of Wasserstein distances or Boltzmann-relative entropy. For reversible models we develop a series of functional inequalities including de Bruijn identity, Fisher's information decays, log-Sobolev inequalities, and entropy contraction estimates. In this context, we also provide a complete and explicit description of all the spectrum and the excited states of the Hamiltonian, yielding what seems to be the first result of this type for this class of models. We illustrate these formulae with the traditional harmonic oscillator associated with real time Brownian particles and Mehler's formula. The analysis developed in this article can also be extended to solve time dependent Schrodinger equations equipped with time varying linear diffusions and quadratic potential functions.

Backward It{ô}-Ventzell and stochastic interpolation formulae

We present a novel backward It{ô}-Ventzell formula and an extension of the Aleeksev-Gröbner interpolating formula to stochastic flows. We also present some natural spectral conditions that yield direct and simple proofs of time uniform estimates of the difference between the two stochastic flows when their drift and diffusion functions are not the same, yielding what seems to be the first results of this type for this class of anticipative models. We illustrate the impact of these results in the context of diffusion perturbation theory, interacting diffusions and discrete time approximations

A duality formula and a particle Gibbs sampler for continuous time Feynman-Kac measures on path spaces

Continuous time Feynman-Kac measures on path spaces are central in applied probability, partial differential equation theory, as well as in quantum physics. This article presents a new duality formula between normalized Feynman-Kac distribution and their mean field particle interpretations. Among others, this formula allows us to design a reversible particle Gibbs-Glauber sampler for continuous time Feynman-Kac integration on path spaces. This result extends the particle Gibbs samplers introduced by Andrieu-Doucet-Holenstein [2] in the context of discrete generation models to continuous time Feynman-Kac models and their interacting jump particle interpretations. We also provide new propagation of chaos estimates for continuous time genealogical tree based particle models with respect to the time horizon and the size of the systems. These results allow to obtain sharp quantitative estimates of the convergence rate to equilibrium of particle Gibbs-Glauber samplers. To the best of our knowledge these results are the first of this kind for continuous time Feynman-Kac measures.
