A rotational hyperbolic theory for surface homeomorphisms

We develop a rotational hyperbolic theory for surface homeomorphisms. We use the equivalence relation on ergodic measures that have nontrivial rotational behaviour defined in [arXiv:2312.06249] to define a rotational counterpart of homoclinic classes. These allows to produce a network of horseshoes representing the whole rotational behaviour f the homeomorphism. We also study the counterpart of heteroclinic connections and give 5 different characterizations of such connections. The main technical tool is the forcing theory of Le Calvez and Tal [arXiv:1503.09127], [arXiv:1803.04557], and in particular a result of creation of periodic points that can also be seen as a statement of homotopically bounded deviations [arXiv:2511.14222]. This theoretical article is followed by a paper focused of some applications of it to the case of homeomorphisms with big rotation set [arXiv:2511.15220].

Surface homeomorphisms with big rotation set

This article consists in applications of [arXiv:2511.14232] in the case of homemomorphisms of higher genus surfaces whose homological rotation set is big enough -- a class of dynamics that is open. We first prove a structure theorem for the rotation set of such homeomorphisms: it is a finite union of convex sets, we get an optimal bound for the number of such pieces. This bound can be improved in the case of transitive (in this case the rotation set is convex) and non-wandering dynamics (and for such homeomorphisms we get the existence of a family of invariant essential open sets). We also get boundedness of deviations for homeomorphisms with big rotation set and some consequences of it, including a answer to Boyland's conjecture in our framework.

Bounded deviations in higher genus I: closed geodesics

This is the first article of a series of two where we study the problem of bounded deviations for homeomorphisms of closed surfaces of genus $\ge 2$. This first part studies bounded deviations with respect to closed geodesics. As a byproduct of our proofs, we also get a criterion of existence of periodic orbits in terms of big deviation with respect to some closed geodesic. The combination with the second part [arXiv:2511.14226] generalises to the higher genus case most of the bounded deviations results already known for the torus.

Bounded deviations in higher genus II: minimal laminations

This article follows and completes [arXiv:2511.14222], where we study the problem of bounded deviations for homeomorphisms of closed surfaces of genus $\ge 2$. This second part deals with bounded deviations relative to geodesic minimal laminations that are not reduced to a closed geodesic. The combination of both articles generalises to the higher genus case most of the bounded deviations results already known for the torus.

Geodesic tracking and the shape of ergodic rotation sets

We prove a structure theorem for ergodic homological rotation sets of homeomorphisms isotopic to the identity on a closed orientable hyperbolic surface: this set is made of a finite number of pieces that are either one-dimensional or almost convex. The latter ones give birth to horseshoes; in the case of a zero-entropy homeomorphism we show that there exists a geodesic lamination containing the directions in which generic orbits with respect to ergodic invariant probabilities turn around the surface under iterations of the homeomorphism. The proof is based on the idea of $\textit{geodesic tracking}$ of orbits that are typical for some invariant measure by geodesics on the surface, that allows to get links between the dynamics of such points and the one of the geodesic flow on some invariant subset of the unit tangent bundle of the surface.

Hyperbolic isometries of the fine curve graph of higher genus surfaces

We prove that for a homeomorphism f that is isotopic to the identity on a closed hyperbolic surface, the following are equivalent: * f acts hyperbolically on the fine curve graph; * f is isotopic to a pseudo-Anosov map relative to a finite f-invariant set; * the ergodic homological rotation set of f has nonempty interior.

Area preserving homeomorphisms of surfaces with rational rotational direction

Let $S$ be a closed surface of genus $g\geq 2$, furnished with a Borel probability measure $λ$ with total support. We show that if $f$ is a $λ$-preserving homeomorphism isotopic to the identity such that the rotation vector $\mathrm{rot}_f(λ)\in H_1(S,\mathbb R)$ is a multiple of an element of $H_1(S,\mathbb Z)$, then $f$ has infinitely many periodic orbits. Moreover, these periodic orbits can be supposed to have their rotation vectors arbitrarily close to the rotation vector of any fixed ergodic Borel probability measure.

Cramér distance and discretizations of circle expanding maps II: simulations

This paper presents some numerical experiments in relation with the theoretical study of the ergodic short-term behaviour of discretizations of expanding maps done in arXiv:2206.07991 [math.DS]. Our aim is to identify the phenomena driving the evolution of the Cramér distance between the $t$-th iterate of Lebesgue measure by the dynamics $f$ and the $t$-th iterate of the uniform measure on the grid of order $N$ by the discretization on this grid. Based on numerical simulations we propose some conjectures on the effects of numerical truncation from the ergodic viewpoint.

Cramér distance and discretizations of circle expanding maps I: theory

This paper is aimed to study the ergodic short-term behaviour of discretizations of circle expanding maps. More precisely, we prove some asymptotics of the distance between the $t$-th iterate of Lebesgue measure by the dynamics $f$ and the $t$-th iterate of the uniform measure on the grid of order $N$ by the discretization on this grid, when $t$ is fixed and the order $N$ goes to infinity. This is done under some explicit genericity hypotheses on the dynamics, and the distance between measures is measured by the mean of \emph{Cramér} distance. The proof is based on a study of the corresponding linearized problem, where the problem is translated into terms of equirepartition on tori of dimension exponential in $t$. A numerical study associated to this work is presented in arXiv:2206.08000 [math.DS].

Homotopic rotation sets for higher genus surfaces

This paper states a definition of homotopic rotation set for higher genus surface homeomorphisms, as well as a collection of results that justify this definition. We first prove elementary results: we prove that this rotation set is star-shaped, we discuss the realisation of rotation vectors by orbits or periodic orbits and we prove the creation of new rotation vectors for some configurations. Then we use the theory developped by Le Calvez and Tal in [LCT18a] to obtain two deeper results:-- If the homotopical rotation set contains the direction of a closed geodesic which has a self-intersection, then there exists a rotational horseshoe and hence infinitely many periodic orbits in many directions.-- If the homotopical rotation set contains the directions of two closed geodesics that meet, there exists infinitely many periodic orbits in many directions.

Historic behaviour vs. physical measures for irrational flows with multiple stopping points

We study Birkhoff averages along trajectories of smooth reparameterizations of irrational linear flows of the two torus with two stopping points, say $\mathbf p$ and $\mathbf q$, of quadratic order. The limiting behaviour of such averages is independent of the starting point in a set of full Haar-Lebesgue measure and depends in an intricate way on the Diophantine properties of both the slope $α$ of the linear flow as well as the relative position of $\mathbf p$ and $\mathbf q$. In particular, if $α$ is Diophantine, then Birkhoff limits diverge almost everywhere (historic behaviour) and if $α$ is sufficiently Liouville, then there exists some $\mathbf p$ and $\mathbf q$ such that the Birkhoff averages converge almost everywhere (unique physical measure).

Dirac physical measures on saddle-type fixed points

In this article we study some statistical aspects of surface diffeomorphisms. We first show that for a $C^1$ generic diffeomorphism, a Dirac invariant measure whose \emph{statistical basin of attraction} is dense in some open set and has positive Lebesgue measure, must be supported in the orbit of a sink. We then construct an example of a $C^1$-diffeomorphism having a Dirac invariant measure, supported on a hyperbolic fixed point of saddle type, whose statistical basin of attraction is a nowhere dense set with positive Lebesgue measure. Our technique can be applied also to construct a $C^1$ diffeomorphism whose set of points with historic behaviour has positive measure and is nowhere dense.

Degree of recurrence of generic diffeomorphisms

We study spatial discretizations of dynamical systems: is it possible to recover some dynamical features of a system from numerical simulations? Here, we tackle this issue for the simplest algorithm possible: we compute long segments of orbits with a fixed number of digits. We show that for every $r\ge 1$, the dynamics of the discretizations of a $C^r$ generic conservative diffeomorphism of the torus is very different from that observed in the $C^0$ regularity. The proof of our results involves in particular a local-global formula for discretizations, as well as a study of the corresponding linear case, which uses ideas from the theory of quasicrystals.

Stability of the rotation set of area-preserving toral homeomorphisms

We show that if the rotation set of a homeomorphism of the torus is stable under small perturbations of the dynamics, then it is a convex polygon with rational vertices. We also show that such homeomorphisms are $C^0$-generic and have bounded rotational deviations (even for pseudo-orbits). The results hold both in the area-preserving setting and in the general setting. When the rotation set is stable, we give explicit estimates on the type of rationals that may appear as vertices of rotation sets in terms of the stability constants.

On the genericity of the shadowing property for conservative homeomorphisms

We prove the genericity of the shadowing and periodic shadowing properties for both conservative and dissipative homeomorphisms on a compact connected manifold. Our proof is valid for topological manifolds and still holds in the dissipative case. As a consequence of this result, we establish the genericity of the specification property, the average shadowing property and the asymptotic average shadowing property in the conservative case.

A Minkowski theorem for Meyer sets

In this paper, we generalize Minkowski's theorem. This theorem is usually stated for a centrally symmetric convex body and a lattice both included in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In some situations, one may replace the lattice by a more general set for which a notion of density exists. In this paper, we prove a Minkowski theorem for Meyer sets, which bounds from below the frequency of differences appearing in the Meyer set and belonging to a centrally symmetric convex body. In the later part of the paper, we develop quite natural applications of this theorem to Diophantine approximation and to discretization of linear maps.

Spatial discretizations of generic dynamical systems

How is it possible to read the dynamical properties (ie when the time goes to infinity) of a system on numerical simulations? To try to answer this question, we study in this manuscript a model reflecting what happens when the orbits of a discrete time system $f$ (for example an homeomorphism) are computed numerically . The computer working in finite numerical precision, it will replace $f$ by a spacial discretization of $f$, denoted by $f_N$ (where the order $N$ of discretization stands for the numerical accuracy). In particular, we will be interested in the dynamical behaviour of the finite maps $f_N$ for a generic system $f$ and $N$ going to infinity, where generic will be taken in the sense of Baire (mainly among sets of homeomorphisms or $C^1$-diffeomorphisms). The first part of this manuscript is devoted to the study of the dynamics of the discretizations $f_N$, when $f$ is a generic conservative/dissipative homeomorphism of a compact manifold. We show that it would be mistaken to try to recover the dynamics of $f$ from that of a single discretization $f_N$ : its dynamics strongly depends on the order $N$. To detect some dynamical features of $f$, we have to consider all the discretizations $f_N$ when $N$ goes through $\mathbf N$. The second part deals with the linear case, which plays an important role in the study of $C^1$-generic diffeomorphisms, discussed in the third part of this manuscript. Under these assumptions, we obtain results similar to those established in the first part, though weaker and harder to prove.
