Evaluating the Prediction of Wind Power Ramping Events in the Belgian Offshore Zone

Evaluations are presented for the prediction of wind power ramping events in the Belgian Offshore Zone. Two models from the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium are verified: the operational ALARO-4km and its version with Wind Farm Parameterization (WFP). Power predictions are produced using power curves and machine learning (ML). As standard metrics such as MAE are insufficient for evaluating ramps, the proposed framework incorporates time and power buffers, enabling a flexible assessment that tolerates minor errors. Results indicate that WFP models enhance ramping prediction skill, while ML provides more balanced forecasts by reducing both misses and false alarms. A Ramp Alignment Score is also introduced to quantify temporal errors by forecast lead time, confirming that WFP models yield smaller average timing errors. Moreover, the framework reveals that severe precipitation is a strong indicator of large, predictable ramps, whereas lighter precipitation is associated with greater forecast errors.

A comparison of stretched-grid and limited-area modelling for data-driven regional weather forecasting

Regional machine learning weather prediction (MLWP) models based on graph neural networks have recently demonstrated remarkable predictive accuracy, outperforming numerical weather prediction models at lower computational costs. In particular, limited-area model (LAM) and stretched-grid model (SGM) approaches have emerged for generating high-resolution regional forecasts, based on initial conditions from a regional (re)analysis. While LAM uses lateral boundaries from an external global model, SGM incorporates a global domain at lower resolution. This study aims to understand how the differences in model design impact relative performance and potential applications. Specifically, the strengths and weaknesses of these two approaches are identified for generating deterministic regional forecasts over Europe. Using the Anemoi framework, models of both types are built by minimally adapting a shared architecture and trained using global and regional reanalyses in a near-identical setup. Several inference experiments have been conducted to explore their relative performance and highlight key differences. Results show that both LAM and SGM are competitive deterministic MLWP models with generally accurate and comparable forecasting performance over the regional domain. Various differences were identified in the performance of the models across applications. LAM is able to successfully exploit high-quality boundary forcings to make predictions within the regional domain and is suitable in contexts where global data is difficult to acquire. SGM is fully self-contained for easier operationalisation, can take advantage of more training data and significantly surpasses LAM in terms of (temporal) generalisability. Our paper can serve as a starting point for meteorological institutes to guide their choice between LAM and SGM in developing an operational data-driven forecasting system.

Self-attentive Transformer for Fast and Accurate Postprocessing of Temperature and Wind Speed Forecasts

Current postprocessing techniques often require separate models for each lead time and disregard possible inter-ensemble relationships by either correcting each member separately or by employing distributional approaches. In this work, we tackle these shortcomings with an innovative, fast and accurate Transformer which postprocesses each ensemble member individually while allowing information exchange across variables, spatial dimensions and lead times by means of multi-headed self-attention. Weather forecasts are postprocessed over 20 lead times simultaneously while including up to fifteen meteorological predictors. We use the EUPPBench dataset for training which contains ensemble predictions from the European Center for Medium-range Weather Forecasts' integrated forecasting system alongside corresponding observations. The work presented here is the first to postprocess the ten and one hundred-meter wind speed forecasts within this benchmark dataset, while also correcting two-meter temperature. Our approach significantly improves the original forecasts, as measured by the CRPS, with 16.5\% for two-meter temperature, 10\% for ten-meter wind speed and 9\% for one hundred-meter wind speed, outperforming a classical member-by-member approach employed as a competitive benchmark. Furthermore, being up to six times faster, it fulfills the demand for rapid operational weather forecasts in various downstream applications, including renewable energy forecasting.

Recent progress and review of issues related to Physics Dynamics Coupling in geophysical models

Geophysical models of the atmosphere and ocean invariably involve parameterizations. These represent two distinct areas: Subgrid processes that the model cannot resolve, and diabatic sources in the equations, due to radiation for example. Hence, coupling between these physics parameterizations and the resolved fluid dynamics and also between the dynamics of the air and water, is necessary. In this paper weather and climate models are used to illustrate the problems. Nevertheless the same applies to other geophysical models. This coupling is an important aspect of geophysical models. However, often model development is strictly segregated into either physics or dynamics. As a consequence, this area has many unanswered questions. Recent developments in the design of dynamical cores, extended process physics and predicted future changes of the computational infrastructure are increasing complexity. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art of the physics-dynamics coupling in geophysical models, surveys the analysis techniques, and illustrates open questions in this field. This paper focuses on two objectives: To illustrate the phenomenology of the coupling problem with references to examples in the literature and to show how the problem can be analysed. Proposals are made on how to advance the understanding and upcoming challenges with emerging modeling strategies. This paper is of interest to model developers who aim to improve the models and have to make choices on and test new implementations, to users who have to understand choices presented to them and finally users of outputs, who have to distinguish physical features from numerical problems in the model data.

The structure of N=3 multiplets in AdS_4 and the complete Osp(3|4) X SU(3) spectrum of M-theory on AdS_4 X N^{010}

In this paper, relying on previous results of one of us on harmonic analysis, we derive the complete spectrum of Osp(3|4) X SU(3) multiplets that one obtains compactifying D=11 supergravity on the unique homogeneous space N^{0,1,0} that has a tri-sasakian structure, namely leads to N=3 supersymmetry both in the four-dimensional bulk and on the three-dimensional boundary. As in previously analyzed cases the knowledge of the Kaluza Klein spectrum, together with general information on the geometric structure of the compact manifold is an essential ingredient to guess and construct the corresponding superconformal field theory. This is work in progress. As a bonus of our analysis we derive and present the explicit structure of all unitary irreducible representations of the superalgebra Osp(3|4) with maximal spin content s_{max}>=2.

The complete N=3 Kaluza Klein spectrum of 11D supergravity on AdS_4 x N^{010}

We derive the invariant operators of the zero-form, the one-form, the two-form and the spinor from which the mass spectrum of Kaluza Klein of eleven-dimensional supergravity on AdS_4 x N^{010} can be derived by means of harmonic analysis. We calculate their eigenvalues for all representations of SU(3)xSO(3). We show that the information contained in these operators is sufficient to reconstruct the complete N=3 supersymmetry content of the compactified theory. We find the N=3 massless graviton multiplet, the Betti multiplet and the SU(3) Killing vector multiplet.

M-theory on AdS_4xM^{111}: the complete Osp(2|4)xSU(3)xSU(2) spectrum from harmonic analysis

We reconsider the Kaluza Klein compactifications of D=11 supergravity on AdS_4x(G/H)_7 manifolds that were classified in the eighties, in the modern perspective of AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence. We focus on one of the three N=2 cases: (G/H)_7=M^{111}=SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1)/SU(2)xU(1)'xU(1)''. Relying on the systematic use of the harmonic analysis techniques developed in the eighties by one of us (P. Fre') with R. D'Auria, we derive the complete spectrum of long, short and massless Osp(2|4)xSU(3)xSU(2) unitary irreducible representations obtained in this compactification. Our result also provides a general scheme for the other N=2 compactifications. Furthermore, it is a necessary comparison term in the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence: the complete AdS/CFT match of the spectra that we obtain will provide a much more stringent proof of the AdS/CFT correspondence than in the S^7 case, since the structure of the superconformal field theory on the M2-brane world volume must be such as to reproduce, at the level of composite operators, the flavor group representations, the conformal dimensions and the hypercharges that we obtain in the present article. The investigation of the match is left to future publications. Here we provide an exhaustive construction of the Kaluza Klein side of our spectroscopy.

The Osp(8|4) singleton action from the supermembrane

Our goal is to study the supermembrane on an $AdS_4 \times \cal M_7$ background, where $\cal M_7$ is a 7--dimensional Einstein manifold with $N$ Killing spinors. This is a direct way to derive the $Osp(N|4)$ singleton field theory with all the additional properties inherited from the geometry of the internal manifold. As a first example we consider the maximally supersymmetric $Osp(8|4)$ singleton corresponding to the choice $\cal M_7 = S^7$. We find the explicit form of the action of the membrane coupled to this background geometry and show its invariance under non--linearly realised superconformal transformations. To do this we introduce a supergroup generalisation of the solvable Lie algebra parametrisation of non--compact coset spaces. We also derive the action of quantum fluctuations around the classical configuration, showing that this is precisely the singleton action. We find that the singleton is simply realised as a free field theory living on flat Minkowski space.
